About Us

The purpose of One by One Leadership Foundation of Southwest Florida is to mobilize communi-

ties to bring reconciliation, healing, forgiveness, and hope to the least, last, and lost. Beginning with

a focus in Immokalee, we facilitate and implement projects that unite the Church and connect its

resources with those of other sectors. We renew the lives of those who live in the margins, one child,

one family, one neighborhood at a time.

The One by One Leadership Foundation of Southwest Florida was originally incorporated in 1978

as Immokalee Neighborhood Services to serve the needs of the poor. Today under the structure of

the One by One Leadership Foundation of Southwest Florida we have expanded services and bring

churches together with business, government, and other community leaders to address the needs

that affect people who are poor or vulnerable.

Beginning in 2005 the One by One Leadership Foundation of Southwest Florida started to serve as

a catalyst for bringing Christian leaders together to work and seek Gods best for our areaconnect-

ing leaders and congregations that have been divided by denomination, ethnicity, geography and

economic status. When the church is divided and not connected, the many resources of the church

are not powerfully engaged in our communitys renewal.

We believed then, and believe now, that when the resources of congregations, neighborhoods, busi-

ness, philanthropy, government, and others are effectively linked, many peoples lives and whole

communities can change in remarkable ways.

VisionThe One by One Leadership Foundation of Southwest Florida is establishing and stafng several ongoing

forums to connect thousands of Christian leaders in the work of the kingdom. We are helping to organize

and start multiple initiatives that link the resources of Christian ministries with other sectors. These initia-

tives will in turn help thousands of prisoners, students, families, and volunteers have a better life. The

One by One Leadership Foundation of Southwest Florida also is helping organize joint initiatives that will

strengthen the work of smaller ministries and community groups in Immokalee.

ValuesThe One by One Leadership Foundation of Southwest Florida is committed to a set of values, which will

guide our work and are rooted in Jesus Kingdom mandate to serve and renew:

We value our city. We are committed to both people and place. We seek the physical, social, and

spiritual renewal of both. We believe that Immokalee and all Southwest Florida can be a place of rela-

tionship, opportunity, and grace for all.

We value the poor and vulnerable. We see Gods unrelenting concern for the poor, widowed, migrant,

sick, prisoner, homeless, and oppressed. We work in partnership to build opportunities and a better life

for those who live at the margins.

We value leadership. Southwest Floridas diverse leadership needs to be engaged. We value a Biblical

view of leadership that seeks the welfare of others, uses everyones gifts, heals divisions, and accom-

plishes the task.

We value the church. The whole church in a city has tremendous resources to bring. We seek to unite

the church and to connect its resources with those of other sectors to renew our communities.

We value empowerment. Our work should not patronize, but free and empower.

We value reconciliation. This work requires listening, respect, the tearing down of barriers, and united

work for the welfare of the community.

Youth Leadership Development

Youth Soccer ProgramWhen school is out, the youth of Immokalee have a need to engage in productive activities such as sports

and academic development. By facilitating partnerships with the Boy Scouts, Kiwanis Clubs and the Soccer

Pit, One by One served as a catalyst to establish expanded sports and leadership development activities for

youth. Today:

200 Youth served

10 teams will compete in Naples Youth Soccer tournament

Last year, 60 youth were served; 5 teams competed in Naples Youth Soccer tournament; 5 teams com-

peted in National tournament in Orlando; 1 team played in National championship game

Silver Ring ThingThe young people of America and South Florida are in trouble. They are the heirs of the sexual revolution

that began in the sixties; a revolution that changed the face of this nation and is felt throughout the world.

Statistics concerning teen pregnancy rates, welfare roles, abortions and sexually transmitted diseases

reveal the disastrous impact that teen promiscuity has on the nation. That is why for the last three years One

by One has sponsored an outreach to youth using the internationally recognized high-tech presentation of

the Silver Ring Thing abstinence education.

Immokalee Young LifeOne of the rst outreaches of One by One was to help promote Young Life youth programs in Immokalee.

Twenty youth were sponsored to go to Christian summer camps. Six of those have committed to go into the

ministry. Today:

The program is serving 60 youth weekly

Offers camping opportunities to all churches in Immokalee

Hired a part time Immokalee-based leader to implement regularly scheduled activities for youth

Additional Initiatives Assist in Mentoring 40 Youth at Immokalee High School

Work with 37 Ave Maria Student Volunteers to facilitate their engagement in Immokalee.

Identied and supported 75 children of prisoners; donated shoes and Christmas gifts

Provided summer activities for At Risk youth including linkage to college scholarships

75 Youth attended pre-season football game in Miami in 2007, and 120 attended in 2008

Sponsored 14 youth to attend Student Leadership University

Youth Leadership Development

KidsGames/Kids Against Hunger:Kids Games is an exciting sports, faith based, and value-centered event involving churches,

businesses, and community groups throughout the world. Hundreds of youth in Southwest

Florida participated in soccer, basketball, ag football and track and eld events as well as other games such

as tug of war and water bucket relays at the rst event in Immokalee. As part of the Kids Games event, com-

munity volunteers packaged 63,000 Kids Against Hunger food items in Immokalee to help in the effort against

hunger in the Immokalee community.

Approximately 150 volunteers and 200 youth attended the 2008 event.

Due to efforts of the volunteers, over 63,000 meals were packaged, boxed and donated to Collier County

charities.

Laptop ProjectMost of the nearly twobillion children in the developing world are inadequately educated, or receive no edu-

cation at all. One in three does not complete the fth grade. One by One Leadership has partnered with One

Laptop Per Child (OLPC) to create educational opportunities for the worlds poorest children by providing each

child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collabora-

tive, joyful, self-empowered learning.

One by One Leadership Foundation requests your support and that of your friends to make a dramatic impact

in the education of 462 Immokalee youth. The goal is simple; provide every 4th grader with their own OLPC

XO laptop computer and their teachers, the training necessary to fully integrate this technology into classroom

and after school programs in order to give rise to activities that have proven to promote high order thinking

skills in youth.

It is clear that the young learners of Immokalee are restricted in their ability to afford access to the internet.

This is a real barrier to developing skills needed for tomorrows workforce. And certainly employment in the

digital media sector for which the MITs media labs XO was originally designed. By providing relatively inexpen-

sive technology for every child we can connect them to the school house and the world at home. It would also

serve as a foundation for literacy development as the laptop will in due course be loaded with age appropriate

books and used to create music and art projects.

The elementary school population in Immokalee is 3,395 students of which 462 are 4th graders educated in

ve schools. Here is how you can help:

Medical MissionsBy all accounts Dr. Villarosa should not be alive today. He was the fourth case and only survivor

of a rare disease that landed him in the hospital for six months. After multiple operations and

the removal of many internal organs it was thought by most professionals that the end was near.

It was then that he took a turn for the better and even though he would have diabetes for the

rest of his life, it was clear that God was not nished with him. His faith eventually led him to

Immokalee, Florida and the establishment of a pediatrics service that can best be described as

a medical mission. When he was faced with possibility of closing his doors, One by One stepped

in to help him keep the practice open and more importantly do so with a design that allowed him

to spend time with his patients. Because 50 % of Immokalee children do not have a pediatrician

these services are very important. That services are provided at rates much lower than govern-

ment services is a plus for all of us.

Progress includes:

Ongoing insurance underwriting and sponsorship for Dr. Villarosas pediatric medical mission

1000 Immokalee children and youth served annually

Youth for Christ met weekly supporting 35-40 children in their moral development

Expansion opportunities evaluated

Distributed 200 shoes to needy families

Physicians Assistant placed in the practice

Hurricane Recovery and HousingFollowing Hurricane Wilmas 130 mile per hour winds and tornado-like storms in the fall of 2005, thirty-seven

percent of the housing stock in Immokalee was deemed sub-standard by the Collier County government. Mold,

leaky roofs and unsafe living conditions were prevalent in trailers and homes.

IHOPETo meet the need for ongoing coordination in Immokalee and the provision of support for the people whose

lives had been impacted by the disaster, One by One supported the position of Director of Community Minis-

tries in Immokalee for eight months. Additionally, One by One helped promote long term funding for the effort,

and thereby enabled I HOPE, Inc to be birthed.

64 FEMA mobile homes are in the process of being set up for local, low-income residents of Immokalee to

have a safe, secure home of their own at a fraction of their value

$1,500,000 coordinated for response to needs

Facilitated and participated in multi-agency collaboration which included Methodists, Baptists, Presbyteri-

ans, Lutherans, United Church of Christ, and Catholics, along with other organizations such as the Community

Foundation of Collier County, Florida Community Bank, United Way, Publix, and private donors

Coordinated and accessed for distribution of emergency supplies after hurricane Wilma

Established and published a Disaster Preparedness Plan that has been used as a model for other relief

agencies around the United States

Established and trained a local C.E.R.T. to work with the local re department as emergency responders

Are the lead agency in the Immokalee Recovery Coordinating Center (IRCC) that works directly with Collier

Countys Emergency Operations Center in times of potential disaster

GIFAOnce I HOPE was established with a local community governing board, One by One Leadership Foundation

partnered with the County, Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta and private donors to address the longstand-

ing neglect of providing a model inll redevelopment of Immokalees most challenging and blighted neighbor-

hoods. The program is called GIFA. The GIFA approach incorporates the following values and operating princi-

ples: Green (environmentally sustainable), Inll housing, faith- based supports and affordable. The county has

selected several residents who are in desperate need and currently living in unhealthy and or unsafe living

conditions. All the families selected are living in residential areas of Immokalee which are in various stages

of decay and either very low income or extremely low income families. In 2008 four will receive new homes,

improving surrounding properties. In 2009 three additional owner-occupied single family homes will

be built under the auspices of I HOPEs DRI funds-Disaster Relief Initiative.

Prisoner ReentryMore than 75% of people in prison do not have a high school education. Offenders continue

with their life of crime because they lack the skills necessary to make right decisions. They also

lack the skills to work and provide for their families. The next generation follows in the path of

their parents. By identifying community coalitions to act as advocates and by providing service

linkages, better outcomes can occur for all of us. The cycle of crime can stop. The problem in

Immokalee is signicant but not insurmountable. When inmates and their children are connected

to the resources and relationships that can make a difference in their lives, safer community

environments can occur and ex-offenders can learn the skills they need to rebuild their lives. This

is happening in Immokalee.

Results of One by One Leaderships Prisoner Reentry Program:

97 obtained employability skills training

One by One is awarded and successfully completes a Weed and Seed contract of $25,000

Prison Fellowship agrees to partner with our efforts to expand outreach in Immokalee

Calvin Lightfoot is sponsored to lead a community training on the issue of Prisoner Reentry. He

returns to do management training with partners and to establish a comprehensive community

collaboration

A Vision for the Future

Where We Are

Today One by Ones Board has established a three year strategic plan and 2008 budget of a million dollars.

We remain strategically opportunistic. But have afrmed program focuses that include: Prisoner Reentry,

Medical Missions, Youth Leadership Development, Housing (including Hurricane Recovery Coordination

efforts and Green Inll Affordable Housing in Immokalee). Several relationships have been formed to help

structure the growth anticipated.

Where we are going

We pray that God will use these next steps of faith to help carry out our calling.

Complementing the major recommendations coming from the Reveal Project of LFA, One by One proposes

to work with other leadership foundations and staff and Board to develop a strong way to communicate our

impact and to invite additional investment. Strategies include:

Participating in a new multi-city LFA initiative. A way to communicate our intended impactin

connecting leaders, changing lives, and transforming a communities over time

Developing statisticson the reach and scope of our work

Packaging the communication of our impact to invite additional investment by adapting material

from LFA

One by One Leadership is beginning to approach investors for the $10 million required

Letter from the Executive Director

Although One by One Leadership Foundation is chartered as a 501(c) (3) corporation based on our educa-

tional and social missions, we have a strategic approach that targets and equips the faith community to better

partner with government and businesses and others of good will to accomplish some of the most challenging

social problems of our time. The mission of One by One Leadership Foundation is to connect leaders from the

areas organizations, churches, government, neighborhood, business, education and social service community

to address the needs that affect people who are poor or vulnerable. Our goal is to change lives and transform

community. In 2005 we reorganized an existing Immokalee based 501 (c) (3) as an afliate of the Leadership

Foundations of America network. As part of that work we have developed a prisoner reentry program, medical

missions in Immokalee, affordable/green home construction, hurricane recovery efforts, youth sports, digital

media laptop computer programming classes, mentoring and health related events promoted by the federal

government that reach approximately 1000 Collier County at risk youth annually. Over all we serve an equal

distribution of genders. Demographically 80% are Hispanic, 10% Haitian, 5% Caucasian and 5% African Ameri-

can. Our focus is in Immokalee. We serve as intermediaries and emissaries to the faith community giving faith

focused options as well as secular choices in the programs we offer.
