Courage:One of the
Seven Sacred Teachings
By The Teacher’s Craft
Courage - The Bear: In the Legend of
the Seven Grandfathers, the bear represents courage
because of how bravely and fiercely she defends her cubs.
She will stand up against any odds for what is most
important - her young.
Does courage mean not being afraid?
No, in fact, for there to be courage
there must be fear. Why is that true?
Courage is fighting through your fears and bravely
doing something even though it frightens you.
When you think of
courage, do you think
of brave soldiers?
Do you think of those
who risk their lives to
save our homes?
Do think you think of
those who proudly
serve to keep us safe.
Courage is found in you!

Courage isn’t only found in those
fighting battles, fires, or crime.
You have used your courage to try new sports.
What sports can
you play now that
you couldn’t five
years ago?
You’ve dared to try new foods.
Name a food that you just started eating over the last
few years or one that you are ready to try.
Risking being wrong, you have confidently
raised your hand to answer a question.
You’ve stood up to defend others.
You’ve had the courage to say no,
even when a friend said yes.

things does involve being
brave and taking risks.
Is it always brave and wise to take risks?
The Truth About Dares
Why do some people dare
others to do certain things?
Would eating a slug like this on a dare be brave or foolish?
Sam and the Slug
That sounds like the title of a funny
children’s picture book, doesn’t it.
Unfortunately, it’s a true story of Sam Ballard, a strong,
healthy young man who took a dare.
Let’s watch this news broadcast to hear what happened.
Sam Ballard's Story (00:54)
Brave or Foolish?
What happened to Sam Ballard was certainly sad, but,
besides not to eat slugs, what lessons can it teach?
It’s important, when faced with a challenge, to think about
the possible consequences and then to decide whether
doing it would be brave or foolish.
● To decide the risk is too great, to give up, to
run away or avoid the challenge.
● To face it fearfully, believing you will fail
or that it will be too much to handle.
● To meet it with courage, confidence
and determination, doing all you can
to succeed and even asking for help if
you really need it.
When a challenge appears, there are three choices:
Courage and Challenges
In a minute, you’re going to watch a video
about a man named Chris Koch who was
born with a special challenge.
As you watch the video I want you to decide
which choice below best describes how
Chris handles the challenges in his life.
A. He gives up, avoids, or runs away from challenges.
A. He faces them fearfully and reluctantly, not really
expecting to succeed.
A. He meets the challenges with courage, determination
and confidence. Chris Koch (5:51)

“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you
run into a wall, don’t turn around and give
up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it,
or work around it.” Michael Jordan
“He who is not courageous enough to take
risks will accomplish nothing in life.”
Muhammad Ali
“Anything’s possible, if
you’ve got enough
nerve.” J.K. Rowling

tells me I can’t do
something, I want to
do it more.”
Taylor Swift
