We, the people of God, led and inspired by the Holy Spirit, fed by the Word and the Eucharist, strive to share our faith and live our

lives daily as disciples of Christ.

CALLED, GIFTED, SENT FORTH

2nd Sunday of Lent - Year B

The Mountaintop Experience

The Mount of the Transfiguration in today’s gospel, James and John had followed Jesus because they wanted special seats at his right hand and at his left (Mark 10:37). Peter wanted to know what he would get since he had left everything to follow Jesus (Mark 10:28). These were men who believed that the fact that Jesus was the Messiah was going to translate into visible, tangible dividends in this life both for Jesus and for them his followers. If Jesus had not prepared them beforehand by giving them a glimpse into the heavenly glory that was His and theirs at the end of their journey of faith, they would have been devastated by the shock of Jesus’ shameful death as a public criminal. The event of the Transfiguration, prepared Jesus’ apostles who would assume the mantle of leadership after Him for the trauma that was soon to come.

Many of us spend our daily lives in the valley of hardship. We sometimes feel abandoned by God and begin to doubt our faith and its promises. However, if we remain close to Jesus during this

season of Lent like Peter, James and John, one mountaintop experience is all that we need and our doubts and fears will turn into blessed assurance. All because our eyes have seen the glory of the Lord, our own future glory.

“…if God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8:31)

Automatic Payment contributions make it easier for us to plan our activities and to budget for expenses more accurately. Many banks are beginning to discontinue cheques as a form of payment so this is a good opportunity for current and prospective planned givers to consider Automatic Payment.

For those who are already in our planned giving using envelopes, we encourage you to go on Automatic Payment. Our bank account number is BNZ 02 0544 0049224 00 and put your name and PG number as reference.

WISDOM FROM POPE FRANCIS

“Lent is not about the little sacrifices we make, but about discerning where our hearts are directed”

Ash Wednesday 2021

ADW VACANCY: The Archdiocese is seeking applications for the Safeguarding Advisor role. This is a permanent, part time role focusing on Safeguarding in the Archdiocese. Please refer to this month’s edition of Welcom or the ADW website for further information. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER: Friday 5 March 2021 at 10am - Ss Peter and Paul Church centre, 60 Knights Rd. Followed by morning tea and fellowship.

This year the liturgy has been prepared by the women of Vanuatu, and the local gathering is being hosted by the Catholic parish of Te Awa Kairangi. You are warmly invited to come along and join other local Christian church communities in faith and friendship on this day of global unity in prayer. This is always a most enjoyable occasion.

A collection will be taken, and offerings will go to projects in Vanuatu supporting resilience in the face of climate change and extreme weather events, and to Hospital Chaplaincy in New Zealand.

Come along and enjoy the company of the faithful of other local churches.
