WELCOME TO HIS PEOPLE ROSEBANKWelcome to our church – we invite you to be at home with us. We are passionate lovers of God and lovers of people in Joburg. Our hearts burn with a passion for Holy Spirit transformation and our vision is to see lives, communities and society transformed through discipleship in the Word, the Presence and Power of God.

We live in exciting times and need to seek God’s face for how each of us can bring biblical and Godly transformation into the areas of life where we work or have influence. God has called us to be salt and light in our society and it’s time that we rise up and be true to this calling.

Our main article is based on our upcoming sermon series, Phakama − Arise & Build, where we take a closer look at how we can practically make a huge difference in our nation.

It is also exciting to share a testimony of multi-cultural, multi-generational discipleship happening in the church. As these are two of our core values, stories like these are a great inspiration.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” − Romans 15:13.

With love, Roger, Nicola and the leadership team.

“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” − 1 Peter 2:4-5

As believers we are the living stones that form the church, so we first and foremost invest in

our people and give generously to our campus ministries and smaller congregations. However, every now and again, we are delighted to invest into the building where we meet!

As such, we have embarked on our foyer revamp, creating a space that is modern, open and that will be a perfect space for fellowship, events, weddings and so forth. The new coffee shop will also be perfect for getting together with friends over a good cuppa!

You might have also noticed our new street sign and signs inside the property. Now people driving past can’t miss us anymore! What a privilege it has been to upgrade our facilities and we praise the Lord for His provision.

“There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.”

These words by Nelson Mandela capture the sense of the journey that South Africa has been on over the last 20 years. We have experienced freedom from Apartheid but the journey to see a free and just South African society where each person can step into

their God-given calling continues. If we look around us, we see a society that is broken – we see high unemployment, poverty, crime, injustice, inequality and fear for the future. We battle rising inflation, an education system that is not ideal, a political system that is dysfunctional and people that are hurting. Many have experienced the valley of the shadow of death.

What are we as Christians to do about this? Are we meant to cross our arms, shake our heads and wait for heaven? Or are we meant to do something in the here and now to transform our nation?

PHAKAMA ARISE & BUILD

| 5 |

In our sermon series, Phakama – Arise & Build, we will be unpacking how we can practically impact these different spheres of society.

We live in exciting times and need to seek God’s face for how each of us can bring biblical and Godly transformation into the worlds where we spend our working lives. God has called us to be salt and light in our society. It is time that we rise up and be true to this calling, trusting God for wisdom, strength and favour to bring His way and will into our nation.

CRYING OUT TO GOD FOR OUR NATIONGod calls us to step up and be stewards of our callings and to become voices and hands to bring about true freedom in our nation. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 we read, “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” God calls us to seek His face for this nation. In the book of Nehemiah, the cup-bearer to the King, Nehemiah, looked upon Jerusalem and saw that his community was broken. He cried out to God for wisdom and favour and God opened the door for Nehemiah to go to Jerusalem and to start to rebuild the walls of that once great city.

RISE UP AND BUILDIn Nehemiah 2:18 we read that Nehemiah told the people of Jerusalem, “of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, ‘Let us rise up and build’. So they strengthened their hands for the good work.” We are called to rise up in this nation and to build, trusting God that He will strengthen our arms for this good work. God gave Nehemiah a key strategy to rebuild the city of Jerusalem – each family was to build the walls close to their homes. God has placed each of us in a specific area of our society – education, politics, media, law, medicine etc. We need to build His Kingdom within each area, bringing light, life, hope and His strategy for each sphere of society.

We recently met up with Siviwe Notshe and Werner Rautenbach after hearing about the special time they recently spent together in foundational discipleship.

What made you approach Siviwe for foundational discipleship?

Werner: I recently renewed my relationship with God and had some questions about the basics.

Did the multi-cultural and multi-generational dynamic with Werner change your usual approach to foundational discipleship?

Siviwe: No, with every person I have taken through foundations my approach is the same threefold approach. Everyone wants to be heard, understood and respected, therefore listening well and asking leading questions is a key approach. Everyone has fallen short of God’s glory and everyone sees in part, therefore sharing the truth with clarity is key. Everyone longs to discover the truth, thus pointing them to Scriptures and the Cross of Jesus continually is key.

How did your experience with Siviwe differ from your expectation?

Werner: The conversations with Pastor Siviwe was far above what I expected. I expected to hear what I already knew, or thought I knew. Yes, we talked about stuff like baptism in water and in the Holy Spirit, but we also talked about real pressing issues in my life and how this affects my relationship with God.

What was the most memorable moment during this time?

Werner: I gained a much better perspective from the Bible’s point of view, especially about the need to get baptised in water and how the baptism in the Holy Spirit works.

Siviwe: Passionately talking about baptisms and seeing Werner being baptised a week later.

What did you take away from this experience?

Werner: Probably the fact that salvation cannot be bought, but that God will reward His children for listening to Him.

Siviwe: Culture and tradition can sometimes be our greatest barriers to spiritual freedom. The Word of God must always inform, confirm and shape our traditions and culture.

Any other comments or thoughts you would like to share?

Werner: I gained knowledge about some biblical truths that I never knew about.

Siviwe: Most of us hunger for spiritual freedom, but we don’t know how to get there. The truth is that we cannot get there by ourselves. Being in a Christ-centred community is vital to taking that next step toward spiritual freedom.

Only the Gospel truly bridges the cultural and generational divides found in society. As the Lord works in our lives to grow us as one, let us be a shining light to

the world, a beacon of the hope the Gospel brings.

Being in ministry, a wife and a mother is a juggling performance where every single ball is so precious that I can’t afford to take my eyes off them. Everything is constantly demanding my attention, passion, love and time. I am stretched and challenged daily.

My daughter is two and has embraced that wonderful era called the terrible two’s. She is a loud ball of hyperactivity, discovering new things at every turn. She is such an explorer and nothing stands in the way of her adventurous spirit. My husband and I have been married for three years and to be honest, nothing quite prepares you for life with someone else. Sharing life with someone who is so similar to you and yet so different from you all at once, is hard, funny, frustrating and amazing.

Being in ministry is almost a combination of being a mom and wife. It has seasons that come

with different challenges and adventures. In my ministry life, I get to see and experience God’s love for His people and His bride every day. A lot of people ask me how I balance all these roles. The answer is simple: Jesus. A relationship with Jesus gives me all the strength, love, stability, humility, creativity, accountability and grace I need to be who I need to be.

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Phil 4:13
