H.P. 1253 JOINT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING JUNE 20, 2019 AS WORLD REFUGEE DAY IN

MAINE

WHEREAS, World Refugee Day was launched by the United Nations to honor the bravery, strength and determination of refugees fleeing war and persecution; and WHEREAS, refugees in communities across the welcoming state of Maine resettle in the hope of finding peace and safety for themselves and their families; and WHEREAS, for over 40 years refugee communities from diverse backgrounds with a variety of skills, abilities and experiences have been woven into the fabric of Maine's vibrant cultural tapestry; and WHEREAS, refugee communities have made critical economic contributions to our State; and WHEREAS, refugee-led organizations in Maine work to strengthen communities by engaging with and improving the lives of all residents of Maine; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED: That We, the Members of the One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Legislature now assembled in the First Regular Session, on behalf of the people we represent, take this opportunity to recognize June 20, 2019 as World Refugee Day in Maine and the positive impact and enduring contributions of refugee communities in the State. Joint Resolutions in Memoriam: WHEREAS, the Legislature has learned with deep regret of the death of: (1-27) Joseph Arthur Cobb, of Deer Isle. Mr. Cobb was a veteran of the United States Army. He served from 1998 to 2006, including service in the Iraq War, and worked as an E-4 Petroleum Supply Specialist. Mr. Cobb will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends;

HLS 369 WHEREAS, the Legislature has learned with deep regret of the death of: (1-28) Steven Charles Lane, of Franklin. A teacher, Mr. Lane began his career at Sullivan Grammar School before moving to Mountain View School, where he taught middle school for 41 years, coached various sports for 22 years and mentored several young teachers before retiring in 2015. He was devoted to his second family, the Jehovah's Witnesses. Mr. Lane will be long remembered and sadly missed by his wife of over 46 years, Mary Lou, his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;

Joint Resolution

Joint Resolution in Memoriam: WHEREAS, the Legislature has learned with deep regret of the death of: (4-18) Jack Merrithew, of Searsport. Mr. Merrithew was a Vietnam War veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Seabees. He worked in the paper mill in Bucksport for many years. He was a devout Mason, had a strong appreciation for the Boy Scouts and was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department for more than 15 years and also of Barney Hose, a historical firefighter group. He served the Town of Searsport as a selectman for 15 years, cochaired the town's 175th Anniversary Committee and started the Maritime Heritage Days, now in its 4th year. Mr. Merrithew will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;
