welcome

Saint Joseph Parish is a Catholic community of Christians in Avon Lake, Ohio who have come

together under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to give witness to Jesus Christ. We are an active community of 1,800 families located on the beautiful waters of Lake Erie. Just as Jesus welcomes every person with open

arms, we at Saint Joseph do the same. We have regular outreach, teen, youth and senior groups. Saint Joseph

Parish encourages stewardship as a way of life through growth in faith, justice, love, and service to others. We welcome new members, people searching for a

church, and visitors!

Our mission is to celebrate the Eucharist, to proclaim the Good News, to encourage stewardship as a way of life, to form missionary disciples, and to grow in faith,

justice, love and service to others.

We Are One Family in Christ who encounters Jesus, accompanies one another, forms community, and is

sent forth to live the Gospel.

Fr. Ron’s Corner…. What good news we hear about Jesus in today’s gospel! "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me." (Matthew 11:3) The One who performs these “signs” is the Messiah. Do we believe it? Do we proclaim it! It is because Jesus is the Messiah that we celebrate His birth at Christmas. Advent is the time we prepare. Are we spiritually ready? Thanks for proclaiming the good news to the poor, through our Advent Giving Tree Gift Giving! The packages are beautiful and gifts inside are heartwarming. Your care for those in need is amazing! One of our part-time staff members, Jim Armour, will begin a new job in January. He will be working for the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustin , as the Catholic Mission Director at St. Vincent Charity Hospital System. Jim began as a volunteer helping me organize our first Alpha four years ago. Afterwards, I invited him to assist me with a part-time position as our Mission Effectiveness Director. Jim was a huge help to me while I was ministering at both St. Joseph and Holy Spirit Parishes in Avon Lake. When my role as a two year Administrator ended at Holy Spirit, Jim took on the responsibility of organizing behind the scenes, our adult faith formation programs along with other administrative tasks which allowed me to provide for the sacramental needs of our very vibrant Parish. While Jim worked 24 hours a week, he has made a big impact on the Parish in the short time that he has been here. We send Jim to his new job with our thanks and God’s Blessings! We will be decorating the church for Christmas after the 4th Sunday of Advent. If you can help from 6pm to 9pm on Sunday 12/22 or Monday morning from 9am to Noon on 12/23, I would be grateful. We will be handing out Parish Calendars this Christmas season as well as our annual Parish gift, a book. This year the book is called “Rediscover the Saints” by Matthew Kelly, and I deeply encourage you to read and reflect on this material. Inside of the cover you will find a resource sheet to use as a tool as well as a bookmark. This will be the introductory book for our Parish Lenten Mission beginning in March. Confessions Sunday night: Please join us for Confessions on Sunday, evening from 7-9pm at Holy Spirit Parish on Lear Road. Holy Spirit, St. Raphael, and Saint Joseph Parishes will all celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the Advent Season. The service will begin with a prayer service and will continue with individual confession times. Six confessors will be available. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. We hope to see you there! I love being your pastor!Fr. Ron

Gr. 8A; Joe Kowalski & Jim Coyne: Students discussed the gifts they received from Jesus and the service they are to give using these gifts. All students mentioned their gifts and ways they can use them to spread Jesus's message and help others. We have singers and athletes, carpenters and great grades, and several other ways to help neighbors and also friends. We have so much talent to share!

Family Activity Sunday: Fifty PSR and Day School families gathered last Sunday to make live Advent Wreaths to begin their celebration fo Advent. The wreaths were beautiful and are a wonderful way to celebrate the Season of Advent as a family!

Junior Choir will entertain the residents of Towne Center on Tuesday evening. This is an annual event which the residents and children all enjoy. They will carol in Parkway, the Avenue, and Main Street Care Center from 4:30-6:30pm on Tuesday evening. We are grateful to these young people and to their families. Junior Choir will sing for the 4pm Mass on Christmas Eve.

You May Have Noticed…… There are new Children’s December Bulletins in the Gathering Area on the Welcome Table! Please consider taking one of these home and moving through each week of Advent as a family. These activities are helpful for children and parents, in that they remind us what the Advent and Christmas season are really about. These children’s bulletins will help teach children the importance of the season of Advent. They are interactive and fun for the whole family to enjoy!

our parish school

Saint Joseph Parish Preschool provides children with a foundation of faith to nurture their spiritual and academic growth. The program is designed to help foster a sequence of learning habits including the fundamentals of reading, writing and number readiness. Each Monday during Advent, our Pre-K 4 and Pre-K 5 year old students join for prayer around the Advent wreath in church. They have been busy creating their very own wreaths as they learn about this holy season. Visit www.stjosephparishchool.org for more information or call the school office at 440-653-5622 to arrange a tour or visit!

Eucharistic Adoration Please consider signing up for one hour a week in our Sacred Heart Chapel. Starting the habit of weekly prayer time has many rewards. It will change you in many ways, and you will soon wonder how you ever lived without it. Our chapel provides an atmosphere in which you can have quiet conversation with God, read the Bible or other available spiritual reading material, or concentrate on your own favorite prayer and devotions. Advent is a good time of the year to take stock of where we are in our relationship with Jesus, Our Lord. We spend a lot of time in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and forget the “Holiness” of the reason for the season. Please take some time out this Advent season and spend it in front of the Baby Jesus in our Sacred Heart Chapel. Eucharistic Adorers are needed: Tuesdays 10 –11 am, 5 - 6 pm (need 2 people), First Fridays 11 am - 12 Noon, 12 Noon - 1 pm, 5 - 6 pm and First Saturdays 3 - 4 am, and 7—8 am. If you can fill a time slot and become an Adorer, please call Barb or Chuck at 933-8983.

Please remember: You can visit the Sacred Heart Chapel anytime, even when adoration is not scheduled. Just slide open the tabernacle doors and close them when you leave.

St. Elizabeth Center Meals Please consider coming to help us prepare, deliver, and serve meals at the St. Elizabeth Center. St. Elizabeth Center serves food to the homeless, men’s shelter, as well as the whole local community. All of these meals and much more are made possible by your donations in the St. Vincent DePaul, St. Elizabeth Center, Charitable Works envelope. We have a number of ways that you can be involved weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly with preparing, cooking, delivering, and serving meals for the St. Elizabeth Center. If you would like to be involved, please email Sandy DelQuadri at [email protected] for the schedule of meals that we have coming up, as well as where you are willing to help!

Please Remember in Your Prayers Francis Leabu, Pat Holler, Mary Ann Price, Katherine Moner, Perlina Shaffer, Becki Lightle, Maya Rak, Jennifer Werner, Brad Shaft, Brian Crawford, Marian Remar, Tom Boehm, Skylar Gordon. All the ill of the Parish and those with addictions, homeless, in the military, unemployed, lonely or depressed, and caregivers. Go to www.StJosephAvonLake.org/PleaseRememberInYourPrayers for the full list. If you would like for someone to be added to our bulletin prayer list, please call the Parish Office at 440.933.3152.

One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is “burying the dead.” Attending parish funerals is a wonderful way to fulfill that work of mercy. Why not consider making it your practice to pray the funeral Masses here at St. Joseph’s? They

are always posted near the doors of our Church, and, if you’d like to receive an email notification, please email Lorrie at [email protected]

You can hear our Senior Choir at the 11am Mass each weekend, and we also invite you to a special free Christmas concert our choir will share with the Westlake church of Jesus

Christ of the Latter Day Saints. The evening begins at 6:30pm on Sunday, December 15. The choir’s final outside performance will be on Sunday, December 22, from 2-3pm at the Avon

Lake Public Library, where they also performed on December first.

Jesus Calling—Always Accepting New Members! Is Jesus calling you to spend time in prayer? If so, you are welcome to join other women of Saint Joseph Parish on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month beginning at 10 am. We will be reading the meditation of the day from “Jesus Calling,” and reflecting and sharing our thoughts on how it speaks to us. We lift up prayers of thanksgiving and petition including the needs of our Parish and school. We end at 11am with an Our Father and Hail Mary. Women of all ages are encouraged and invited to join us! We hope to see you there!

Are you looking for a new way to serve others? Saint Joseph is looking for a few more adults to help with our Confirmation preparation program. We are in need of a few adults to assist as table leaders by coming to the Confirmation sessions and leading a table of candidates in small-group discussions. There is little/no preparation needed for each session and all you need to do is just be present and foster the discussions in your group. Confirmation sessions occur on Sunday evenings throughout the spring and fall, immediately following the 5pm Mass and ending at 8pm. If you think that this might be a fun, new way for you to serve and help our youth grow in their faith, contact Michael Grecol at [email protected] for more information!

Do you need more Christmas Spirit? Join us on Monday, December 23 at the West Side Catholic Center to serve brunch and join

in a Christmas sing-a-long with the residents to bring some Christmas Cheer to everyone! Signups are available in the Gathering Area as well as online at stjosephavonlake.org/wscc. We need volunteers to help us sing, prepare and serve food. If you are unable to volunteer that day, please consider purchasing and donating some of the food items that are needed to prepare the brunch. The full list of items can be found in the Gathering Area as well as online. We hope to see you there!

Merry Christmas!!!
