Sodium sulphite is a chemical used to consume oxygen present in a boiler. Any oxygen is “tied” to the sulphite. In order to ensure we have no oxygen in the boiler, we always must have an excess of sulphite.

1) How does oxygen enter the boiler?

2) Inspect the section of pipe that has oxygen corrosion. What do you observe? What is the failure look like?

3) Mechanical deaeration is another way that oxygen can be controlled in a boiler. Explain the general principles of a deaerator.

4) The flask was rinsed with the solution to be tested. Why rinse with the solution instead of tap water?
