Letrsquos celebrate the rebranding of YOUR business or eventthis year Hop on the party horn and call us today 214-339-7867

efore we jump into our 2013 stuff a word of thanks to all of you for making DFWRUNS an important part of your 2012 We certainly

wouldnrsquot be here without youOf course we are very excited about supporting

your active lifestyle in 2013 As a new year is born we like everyone else have decided upon a few resolutions of our own improvements not just to our business but our lives

As I look back at 2012 and ahead to 2013 what amazes me the most might just be the business we have outside of the DFW Metroplex Many of you know the story of how DFWRUNS began how we started was focused primarily on the marketing and promotional aspects of running events in the DFW area Hence the name DFWRUNS But like any small business and its long-term plan for success things have begun to change

Since 2008 DFWRUNS has quickly grown in two directions The first is geographic and this was especially evident when Jack Black Skin Care Products took us to Knoxville for their first activation around the Rev3 Triathlon series Suddenly the ldquoDFWrdquo in our name didnrsquot make sense nor did ldquoRunsrdquo as we were at a triathlon

Our second change came when we served as race director for the Arbor Day Run prompting us to add event management to our list of service offerings We were no longer simply a marketing and promotional agency but an event management company as well

Over the past four years we have often found ourselves explaining this story to potential customers Heck you have probably heard it a bunch of times too We like to say that the ldquoDFWrdquo in our name is like

the airport code mdash we can be anywhere in a matter of hours As well look at the word ldquoRUNSrdquo in our name yoursquoll find the baseline for any active lifestyle event

And like all healthy New Yearrsquos resolutions we believe that taking small steps and setting achievable goals is the most effective way to make changes that stand the test of time

Having said all that in 2013 you will slowly see the DFWRUNS brand transition to On Your Left Marketing amp Events If you were really paying attention (like many of you did counting 12rsquos last month) you might have noticed that this change started in 2012 when we trademarked the name for this publication

What does this change mean for you As a DFWRUNS customer very little You will still receive amazing service and creative promotion around your active lifestyle event or brand The only changes you may encounter are further penetration into markets that you are trying to reach (hint hint) new email addresses and voicemail messages

If yoursquore a participant in one of our customersrsquo amazing events you might not notice any changes at all as we always put our customersrsquo brand first

For both our customers and participants I invite you to ldquolikerdquo our new facebook at www facebookcomOYLMarketing As well please bookmark the URL at wwwOYLMarketingcom

Slowly we will develop content for these pages and transition the company brand but this resolution will take some time to complete

Best wishes to everyone in 2013 and I hope you have a happy healthy and prosperous new year Before you know it 2014 will be On Your Left

FIND A PCP MAKE A RESOLUTION AND USE THE FORCE

eady to race into the new year I think one of my six-year-old patients is ready As he scrambled up on the exam table so I could look in his ears I

asked him if he was making any New Yearrsquos resolutions He asked me ldquoWhatrsquos a res-lootionrdquo

I told him it was a commitment or a promise to do something to make the world a better or healthier place ldquoFor example some people commit to eating healthier helping others or sharing more special times togetherrdquo I explained

He replied ldquoOh I get it Itrsquoll be my res-lootion to teach my baby brother how to play Star Warsrdquo

Reenacting the destruction of the Death Star may not be on top of our adult list of resolutions but what should be How about resolving to get in shape run a marathon destroy evil with good and to finally find a family doctor who understands that you donrsquot have to be sick to get better How do you choose a family doctor and why do you need one

Having a primary care physician (PCP) is important for many reasons Family physicians pediatricians and internal medicine physicians (or internists) are all considered PCPs The main functions of a PCP are to provide preventative healthcare to diagnose and treat common medical illnesses and to teach healthy lifestyles so you can live your best and longest lifendashhopefully to a healthy 100 A PCP will also make referrals for specialty care when necessary

Now that you know a short list of things your new doc can do how do you choose a PCP You can either allow your insurance company to randomly choose for you or you can choose your own from a list your insurance carrier provides Recommendations from friends and family can also be helpful The first question to ask a physicianrsquos office is ldquoIs the doc is taking appointments for new patientsrdquo The second question is ldquoDo you (still) take my insurancerdquo If you get two ldquoYesesrdquo the Force is with you so far

When choosing a PCP make sure heshe graduated from an accredited medical school and residency and that heshe is board certified (Donrsquot get me wrong there are plenty of board-eligible providers out there who are excellent caring and compassionate but some others are not board certified for a reasonCatch my drift)

Not to get all Zen on you but next you need to know what you want out of your doctor Do you prefer a male or female doc Do they need to be a Baylor grad or will any accredited medical school be okay with you Do you want a young physician who might be on the cutting edge of technology and fast with hand-held digital media or do you prefer an older generation who will have more experience Is it important to you to have a PCP who has a certain specialty area of interest such as sports medicine womenrsquos health or alternative medicine Would you like a provider who focuses on disease treatment or on disease prevention

When choosing a PCP consider the office hours and location the friendliness of the office staff and how long it takes for someone to give you a call back if you have to leave a message How easy is it to get your questions answered and to communicate with your doctorndashwill you get a call back from the staff or do they have email If you get admitted to the hospital which hospital is your doctor affiliated with and who will care for you if heaven forbid you are admitted Find out what other patients or staff members have to say about the doctor too

You can often set up a ldquomeet and greetrdquo appointment to meet your physician (without even having a problem or concern) Bring in your list of questions to your first visit You want to make sure you and your new PCP are a good match Ask your questions and see how the doc responds If the doc seems uncomfortable or makes you feel uncomfortable is answering his cell phone in the middle of your visit seems distracted or doesnrsquot even sit down during your visit it may not be the doc for you Look for nonverbal clues to gauge the docrsquos interest in you Is there good eye contact Does he introduce himself shake your hand and call you by your name Does she lean forward and engage in the visit Find out how involved you will be in making decisions for your care A good doc will perform a thorough physical then tell you what she sees as she is looking and listening A good physician will also explain any tests he wants to do and then explain all of the results as well Your family physician should not be intimidating or defensive and should enjoy hisher patients We took an oath to help you to teach you and to encourage you to make the best decisions for your well-being We are part of your personal Jedi Council and use the Force for good

hanksgiving is always an occasion for food family and friends It was no different this past year as my wife

Lisa and I shuttled down to San Antonio for a feast of epic proportions with her family

But as is custom with such scrumptious delicious occasions I was left feeling as though I had eaten half the state of Texas I know I know Irsquom a skinny lanky dude so I donrsquot have any room to talk Still I poked prodded cajoled and bribed convinced my wife her sister and her brother George to join me for a brisk run down the world-famous San Antonio RiverWalk and Mission Trails

For those of you who havenrsquot visited either suffice to say that San Antonio has done a first-class job accommodating both to runners walkers and cyclists

The Mission Trails take you on a sixteen-mile tour of 18th century Spanish-Colonial Texas Along the way there are five mission churches you can visit Each church was established and settled by Spanish colonists mdash specifically Franciscan monks mdash during the 18th century The trail begins at Mision Espada and ends at a place many of you know as the Alamo originally Mision San Antonio de Valero

The RiverWalk is a small but beautiful five-mile strip of walkway that follows the San Antonio River through downtown Yoursquove got shops hotels restaurants bars nightclubs ndash you name it theyrsquove got it

Friday the four of us were treated to a gorgeous day and much needed exercise after stuffing ourselves with stuffing and somehow overcoming the lingering food coma effects I ran while George followed on his bike My wife and her sister carved their own runningwalking path as well

The experience was so good we had to have another So George and I went again on Saturday With George biking and me running we set out and visited two missions ndash Concepcion and San Jose

In all we logged about 12 miles round trip for both days Just enough to make room in the tummy for dessert

JAUNT JUNKIEBy Seth Gonzales

T

n Christmas Eve I fought a lady for the last two bundles of asparagus

Howrsquos that for Christmas spirit My promise to arrive at my mother-in-laws house with a green vegetable contribution to her Christmas feast had me in the grocery store just hours before closing A mere polite gesture which ultimately forced New Yearrsquos resolution number one Stop Procrastinating

By 1140am on Christmas Eve every single green bean was already stuffed in someone elsersquos drippy casserole sprinkled with Frenchrsquos onions and tucked neatly under its foil blankie for the night But not mine I shuffled through the third grocery store past the last produce shelf minus all green beans before finally spotting a bin labeled ldquoAsparagusrdquo

Two bundles of green stalks stood alone just below the gaze of the approaching contender Her petite little frame moved toward them and her scrawny arm

stretched out with unnatural length as she opened her claws All my speedwork at the track paid off in one mad dart as I scooped up the baby spears and met her stunned gape just 3 inches from my nose She looked down at the glorious acquisition in my hands but I kept my eyes fixed on hers I could hear her little plastic produce baggie rustling She looked at me and held the empty sac up to my face and thatrsquos when her will appeared much larger than her build

She not-so-politely said ldquoExcuse merdquo before telling me these were her asparagus I not-so-politely used the words ldquoIrsquom sorryrdquo as I made it quite obvious that they were not I tried to walk away but our confrontation apparently caught the attention of the store manager who very politely asked if there was anything he could do to help Soon the entire reason this other womanrsquos family would be without B-vitamins at her dinner table and why mine

would be deprived of the all-American traditional Campbellrsquos mushroom soup concoction was because that store manager had failed to efficiently stocked his inventory

What does all this have to do with running The point here is more than being awesome enough to sprint to the asparagus and clutch it like a relay baton The true matter I was inspired to address is the increased number of complaints filed by consumers during those last busy holiday weeks each year After I calmed down and was able to think clearly (post apple pie and red wine the following night) I reflected on

my last-minute grocery incident It got me thinking about the stress of shoppers who waited in long lines which

Holiday Shoppers Can Be MeanBut Runners Always Have Something Nice to Say

0

spread over to the store clerks frustrated over multiple complaints throughout elongated shifts The post office was blamed for late packages airline stewards were blamed for the weather and my landscaper even had a customer demand the change out of a holiday bulb on their rooftop because there were one too many green ones

By the end of each year when we resolve in various ways ldquoto become a better personrdquo have our complaints overruneth our bucket of warm fuzzies Have the nasty things wersquove said to the single-mom working the phones in the customer service department really improved our way of life (Personally I found that when I am kind to the person on the phone they go even further to give me extra little bonuses and credits causing me to do business with them repeatedly) I know I can prevent future stress by making procrastination a thing of 2012 but I also plan to file more compliments and less complaints in 2013

As it pertains to running and other active lifestyle events this effects YOU As you know on race day streets may need to be blocked or closed finish line music may be loud the smell of sweat may pollute the air or endorphins may flood an entire community park DFWRUNS manages events around the country so we frequently work with numerous city officials Unfortunately agreeing on the optimal race experience can be difficult due to the enormous amount of complaints they receive from citizens and businesses about such alterations in the vicinity of the event site DFWRUNS is committed to designing new and interesting courses as well as engaging with local businesses to generating

benefits for charities and to improving the quality of life for all citizens through the active lifestyle We know that as an active person you understand all the positives but the cities are not always willing to listen This is why we are asking your help in 2013 If you recall we shut down the COMPLAINTS DEPARTMENT last year We invite you to visit our COMPLIMENTS DEPARTMENT and help us be proactive by filling out this form after every race even it if it is not one DFWRUNS markets or manages This year letrsquos make things bigger and badder than your mammarsquos worn-out green-bean casserole

When choosing a PCP consider the office hours and location the friendliness of the office staff and how long it takes for someone to give you a call back if you have to leave a message How easy is it to get your questions answered and to communicate with your doctorndashwill you get a call back from the staff or do they have email If you get admitted to the hospital which hospital is your doctor affiliated with and who will care for you if heaven forbid you are admitted Find out what other patients or staff members have to say about the doctor too

n Christmas Eve I fought a lady for the last two bundles of asparagus

What does all this have to do with running The point here is more than being awesome enough to sprint to the asparagus and clutch it like a relay baton The true matter I was inspired to address is the increased number of complaints filed by consumers during those last busy holiday weeks each year After I calmed down and was able to think clearly (post apple pie and red wine the following night) I reflected on

my last-minute grocery incident It got me thinking about the stress of shoppers who waited in long lines which

spread over to the store clerks frustrated over multiple complaints throughout elongated shifts The post office was blamed for late packages airline stewards were blamed for the weather and my landscaper even had a customer demand the change out of a holiday bulb on their rooftop because there were one too many green ones

When choosing a PCP consider the office hours and location the friendliness of the office staff and how long it takes for someone to give you a call back if you have to leave a message How easy is it to get your questions answered and to communicate with your doctorndashwill you get a call back from the staff or do they have email If you get admitted to the hospital which hospital is your doctor affiliated with and who will care for you if heaven forbid you are admitted Find out what other patients or staff members have to say about the doctor too

hanksgiving is always an occasion for food family and friends It was no different this past year as my wife

By the end of each year when we resolve in various ways ldquoto become a better personrdquo have our complaints overruneth our bucket of warm fuzzies Have the nasty things wersquove said to the single-mom working the phones in the customer service department really improved our way of life (Personally I found that when I am kind to the person on the phone they go even further to give me extra little bonuses and credits causing me to do business with them repeatedly) I know I can prevent future stress by making procrastination a thing of 2012 but I also plan to file more compliments and less complaints in 2013

hanksgiving is always an occasion for food family and friends It was no different this past year as my wife

In all we logged about 12 miles round trip for both days Just enough to make room in the tummy for dessert

n Christmas Eve I fought a lady for the last two bundles of asparagus

When choosing a PCP consider the office hours and location the friendliness of the office staff and how long it takes for someone to give you a call back if you have to leave a message How easy is it to get your questions answered and to communicate with your doctorndashwill you get a call back from the staff or do they have email If you get admitted to the hospital which hospital is your doctor affiliated with and who will care for you if heaven forbid you are admitted Find out what other patients or staff members have to say about the doctor too

n Christmas Eve I fought a lady for the last two bundles of asparagus

What does all this have to do with running The point here is more than being awesome enough to sprint to the asparagus and clutch it like a relay baton The true matter I was inspired to address is the increased number of complaints filed by consumers during those last busy holiday weeks each year After I calmed down and was able to think clearly (post apple pie and red wine the following night) I reflected on

my last-minute grocery incident It got me thinking about the stress of shoppers who waited in long lines which

spread over to the store clerks frustrated over multiple complaints throughout elongated shifts The post office was blamed for late packages airline stewards were blamed for the weather and my landscaper even had a customer demand the change out of a holiday bulb on their rooftop because there were one too many green ones

What does all this have to do with running The point here is more than being awesome enough to sprint to the asparagus and clutch it like a relay baton The true matter I was inspired to address is the increased number of complaints filed by consumers during those last busy holiday weeks each year After I calmed down and was able to think clearly (post apple pie and red wine the following night) I reflected on

hanksgiving is always an occasion for food family and friends It was no different this past year as my wife

In all we logged about 12 miles round trip for both days Just enough to make room in the tummy for dessert

n Christmas Eve I fought a lady for the last two bundles of asparagus
