Examples• knowledge-base related assignments• collaborative lists• collaborative notes• collaborative documents• present content• teach writing

MDE Example: In OMDE603, students are asked to work in a wiki as a group to create an annotated class glossary of DE terms relevant to the course. Each group of students chooses one term to contribute to the glossary. This is an ongoing activity as students can choose any term that they like as long as it is relevant to the course and has not been contributed in earlier classes. This way we combine past and present collaborative knowledge.

Recommendations

Wikis have been shown to be very effective for these types of learning activities: • knowledge-building "over time" through versions and groups• progressive or open-ended problem-solving • communities of practice such as internships or field experiences• explaining increasingly diverse and contrary ideas as well as

examining the relatedness of ideas from diverse contexts • combining, synthesizing and evaluating definitions and

terminology across disciplines• critically reading and responding in a constructive and public way

to others' work

Advantages (from http://www.sddu.leeds.ac.uk/online_resources/wikis/wiki_tandl.html)

• "Wikis are extremely flexible allowing any site structure to be created.

• Wiki functionality makes them ideal for collaborative writing applications.

• Enables web publishing without knowledge of HTML or use of special web development tools.

• Enables the development of a document to be explored revealing who contributed what and when (ideal for assessing group work!)."

Disadvantages (from http://www.sddu.leeds.ac.uk/online_resources/wikis/wiki_tandl.html)

• "Using a wiki does involve learning about acceptable editing practices (e.g. how to deal with conflicting opinions) and also how to use wiki mark up.

• Most wiki pages are text based as adding images and formatting layout is more difficult.

• Managing a wiki requires a significant time commitment from a staff member as page edits should be closely monitored.

• A wiki has no predefined structure to guide new users and visitors can find navigating a wiki difficult.

• Generally a wiki's content is open to the public and so will not be suitable for sensitive information. This also means any page vandalism is potentially exposed.

• IP ownership and copyright of Wiki pages can be contentious unless clear policies are in place"

Some key factors companies should consider while creating a successful Wiki system• On one hand where the new technologies emerge more and more challenging

everyday, wikis correspond to relatively simple collaborative capabilities available for any organization. Use of Wiki separately constrains the potential for knowledge sharing and collaboration. Instead Wiki should be used as one of the tools to maintain internal communities.

• This will finally unlock the real benefits of collaborative working by addressing key issues like provision of compelling content, change in behavior etc.

Some more key factors to be considered while implementing a wiki in an organization:• The Wikis should be apt and incorporate personal involvement.• Always make the content provider visible• The errors should be marked and altered mechanically by the editors.• Wikis should include meta-content to support and connect users.• All members should contribute valuable content.
