Difference Between Present Perfect And Present Perfect Continuous

Present perfect continuous

This verbal form is used when it is interesting to highlight the action itself rather than the result; it was not clear if the action has been completed (the action started in the past and it is still happening or it have ends).

Present perfect

The present perfect tense is used

for actions in the past if their exact times are

not known or not important. The emphasis is

on the fact that they happened before

the time of speaking.

Difference

There is often very little difference between the present perfect and the present perfect continuous. In many cases, both are equally acceptable.

I've lived here for 10 years and she has been living here for 12 years.

They've been working here for a long time and Andy has worked here for even longer.

In contrast with the present perfect which emphasizes the result of a completed action, the present perfect continuous tense  focuses on the duration or the activity itself.

I have written two letters today. (result)

I've been writing this letter all week. (duration or activity)

Another difference between these two tenses is that the present perfect might refer to an habitual action over an incomplete period of time:

She has always worked hard.

While the present perfect continuous can be used for habitual, repeated actions over an incomplete period time:

She has been getting up at 6 a.m. for the last two weeks.
