Hermann Staudinger celebrates his eightieth birthday in March 1961. This i s a n occasion for all chemists, and particularly for those who are working and studying in the field of macrmolecular compounds, to extend to this originator and master of our science their best felicitutions and wishes and to reiterate their admiration for his per- sonal and scientific achievements. Many articles already have been written to appraise his numerous contribu- tions to science. On several prior occasions, special issues of journals have been dedicated to him, and Makromoleku- lare Chemie i s issuing a special volume on his eightieth birthday .
The Editors of the Journal of Polymer Science have therefore chosen a less conventional demonstration of their personal feelings and those of his colleagues and pupils, and have mked a number of polymer chemists and physi- cists to send their signatures in handwriting to be a&ed in facsimile following a drawing of Professor Staudinger (by Mrs. M i m i Mark) and a few short words of congratula- tion.
