Car buying: How men and women compare

LOS ANGELES — In the latest not-so-surprising discovery, a study has found that women are the ones who like Minis and Kias while men lean toward Porsches and trucks.

The conclusion was based on an analysis by TrueCar.com of gender difference in car buy-ing.

“The study shows that women car buyers are more cost conscious and purchased fuel-efficient vehicles, while male buy-ers were completely the opposite, purchasing vehicles that were either

big and brawny, like a large truck, or chose a high-priced, high-per-formance vehicle,” said Jesse Toprak, a TrueCar analyst.

The brand with the highest percentage of retail sales to women in 2010 was Mini, at 47.9 percent, followed by Kia, 46.8 percent, and Honda, 46 percent.

The 10 models with the highest percentage of female buyers and at least 1,000 retail sales last year were the Volk-swagen New Beetle, Kia Spectra, Nissan Rogue, Volkswagen Eos, Hyun-dai Entourage, Volvo S40, Jeep Compass,

Honda CR-V, Nissan Sentra and Hyundai Tucson.

Men were the pri-mary buyers of super-expensive, small-volume and exotic cars. Men accounted for 93.6 per-cent of Ferrari buyers and more than 90 per-cent of Lotus and Lam-borghini buyers.

The 10 models with the highest percentage of male buyers and at least 1,000 retail sales last year were the Porsche 911, GMC Sierra, Chev-rolet Corvette, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-Series, BMW M3, Ford Ranger, Toyota Tundra, Dodge Ram and Audi S5.

Microsoft, Toyota to build cloud-based telematics system for new vehicles

LOS ANGELES — Microsoft Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. have announced they’re teaming to build a cloud-based telematics sys-tem that would handle GPS, energy management and multimedia applications in Toyota cars.

The system will be built on Microsoft’s Win-dows Azure cloud-comput-ing platform and will be available in select Toyota cars beginning in 2012, said Celeste Migliore, a Toyota spokeswoman.

“We’ll start out with our Toyota hybrid and plug-in vehicles in 2012, but we are keeping all of our options open,” Migliore said. “The system could make its way

to other vehicles and lines; we’ll have to see.”

Toyota also makes vehi-cles under the Lexus and Scion brands.

As part of Microsoft and Toyota’s partnership in developing the new tele-matics system, the compa-nies will invest a total of about $12 million in Toy-ota Media Service Co., a Toyota-owned subsidiary that handles the automak-er’s digital information ser-vices. Microsoft and Toyota did not offer a breakdown of how that investment would be split between the two companies.

The goal of the project is to build a “complete global cloud platform by 2015 that will provide affordable and advanced telematics servic-es to Toyota automotive cus-

tomers around the world,” Microsoft and Toyota said in a joint statement.

The system will also have smart-grid features that Toyota is testing in Japan that will allow cars to inter-act with homes and other mobile devices so that users can control and plan their energy consumption.

Microsoft has had some recent success with telem-atics systems, such as its Microsoft Sync system in Ford vehicles that allows users to make phone calls, get directions and tap into data from smartphones and computers.

Steve Ballmer, Micro-soft’s chief executive, said in the statement that the new system’s development “further validates the pow-er of the cloud.”

Chrysler vehicles to be sold in Latin America as Fiats

DETROIT — Chrysler is planning to sell Chrysler models under the Fiat brand name in Latin Amer-ica to meet the spirit of the agreement the company made with the U.S. Trea-sury and clear a hurdle that would allow Fiat SpA to increase its ownership stake in the company.

The agreement with Treasury requires the company to reach fran-chise agreements cover-ing at least 90 percent of Fiat’s automobile dealers in Latin America that allow them to sell Chrysler cars and trucks.

“That’s the wording, but the spirit was for us to expand our reach and our

growth within the market-place, and there are differ-ent ways of achieving that,” said Mike Manley, presi-dent and CEO of the Jeep brand, Chrysler’s largest international brand. “As we’ve looked at the situa-tion, I think we have found the best way of achieving that.”

Manley declined to say how soon an agreement with Treasury could be reached but said the com-pany is close to reaching a resolution.

Clearing the 90 per-cent franchising hurdle would bring Fiat another step closer to being able to increase its ownership of Chrysler from 25 percent to 30 percent.

Chrysler’s 2009 bankrupt-cy restructuring, Fiat also was required to record $1.5 billion cumulative reve-nue from Chrysler prod-ucts sold outside North America after Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy on June 10, 2009. Chrysler achieved that with non-North American revenue of $2.5 billion from its bank-ruptcy exit until the end of 2009.

Fiat increased its own-ership of Chrysler from 20 percent to 25 percent in January after Fiat invest-ed money to produce Fiat’s Fully Integrated Robotized Engine in Dundee, Mich. That engine powers the Fiat 500 minicar, which is assembled at Chrysler’s Toluca, Mexico, plant.

DETROIT — With gas prices rising and instabil-ity in the Middle East, the thought of an electric car in the garage might be getting more appealing.

Before you jump for the new technology, though, make sure your garage is ready to be a refueling sta-tion.

Depending on which car you buy and how old your home is, it could cost a couple thousand dollars to prep the garage so you can charge a car quickly enough to take off for work in the morning with a full battery.

Start with the age of the home. Older houses may not have enough juice to handle an electric car. Fifty years ago, who would have

thought we’d be plugging in cars at night?

So the garage may have to be rewired. According to experts, you need at least a 12-amp circuit to charge a car in a reasonable amount of time. You also need a cir-cuit in the garage with little or nothing else on it. Any-thing else drawing power from the same circuit can slow the charging.

Even if you have a dedi-cated circuit in the garage, it still may not work for you. Most garages in the Unit-ed States. have standard 120-volt outlets. But a dedi-cated 240-volt outlet, simi-lar to the kind that powers an electric dryer, can cut the charging time in half. That’s important, depend-ing on the electric car you buy.

Two mass-market electric

cars, the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf, have dif-ferent power systems and different charging needs. The Leaf is all electric and can go up to 100 miles on a single charge. But it needs more juice than the Volt to refill the batteries. It takes eight hours to recharge a Leaf even with a 240-volt circuit, double that at 120 volts.

The Volt can only go about 40 miles on battery power, but it has a small gas motor on board that can keep the car going when the battery runs out. With its smaller battery pack, it can be recharged in 10 hours even on 120 volts, five hours or less at 240.

GM estimates that recharging the Volt will add no more than about $1.50 per day to your electric

bill, based on the national average electricity cost of 11 cents per kilowatt hour.

AeroVironment, the com-pany that makes charg-ing stations for Nissan, rec-ommends outfitting your garage with a special 240-volt station. The basic sta-tion begins charging when you plug the car in; a smart station can start charging later in the evening when the load on the power com-pany grid is lower.

Either way, you’ll need an electrician who knows about car charging to fig-ure out your needs and hook the 240-volt station to a dedicated 40-amp cir-cuit, said Kristen Helsel, vice president of electric vehicle solutions for Aero-Vironment.

Charging stations also are available from other manufacturers. Helsel said it will cost about $2,000 to buy the dock and stan-dard installation services by an electrician when done through AeroVironment and a Nissan dealership.

The Volt, however, may not need anything. If you have a dedicated circuit in your garage, General Motors, which makes the car, recommends charging the car first on 120 volts before spending the cash on a 240-volt charging sta-tion.

“Most cars are parked more than 10 hours,” said Britta Gross, GM’s direc-tor of electrical infrastruc-ture. “If I were a consumer, I would always try 120 first, and if you’re not satisfied, then you can consider the 240-volt upgrade.”

The Volt charger from GM costs $495, and it costs about $1,500 to install, although it could be more depending on how much work is needed at the house, Gross said.

Gross said she’s working to change building codes so that all garages have 240-volt outlets to charge cars, but she conceded that will take years. Many auto industry analysts say it will be years before electric

cars are in a lot of garag-es because cars powered by internal combustion engines will continue to get more efficient.

A 120-volt outlet wouldn’t work for James Brazell, 84, of Asheville, N.C., one of the first people in the Unit-ed States to buy a Volt. He makes several short trips per day, and on some days, when he attends class at the University of North Caro-lina Asheville, he will drive 51 miles, more than the Volt’s electric range.

At first, he used the stan-dard outlet in the garage of his home at a retirement community, but he ended up using a half-gallon of gasoline in four days. Then the charger he ordered from GM arrived at a cost of $530, including shipping. An electrician in his com-munity installed it for an estimated $300.

Now he plugs the car in after short trips. “Pretty much I top it up every time I bring it into the garage,” he said.

Some factors require water pump replacementQuestion: I recently

had a major service done on my car and was told I needed to replace my water pump. Since then, I’ve heard from friends that the usual reason for replacing this part is cool-ant leakage, which was not a problem. I like this repair shop, but have a lin-gering doubt they might have been a bit demand-ing of my wallet.

Could you please explain a bit about water pumps and your opinion on what might have justified mine being replaced? — Alfred Gonzalez, Sunnyvale, Calif.

Answer: Water pumps have been used on virtu-ally all liquid-cooled auto-motive engines since the Model T Ford. They are mounted to the front of the engine, are belt-driven, and contain an impeller, which circulates coolant through the engine, radia-tor and related parts via centrifugal force. Pump output varies with engine speed and can reach a high of 6,000 gallons per hour.

Within the pump, a per-manently lubricated and sealed bearing supports the impeller shaft, and a spring-loaded ceram-ic seal prevents coolant leakage. Older and some

current engines drive the water pump with one of the accessory drive belts, while a growing number of engines drive the pump via the timing (camshaft drive) belt. This saves valuable under-hood space, but makes pump access more challenging.

With diligent cooling sys-tem service (clean, noncor-rosive coolant) and a prop-erly tensioned drive belt, a water pump might last the life of the vehicle. In the real world, however, a 75,000- to 100,000-mile lifespan is more realistic. The most common causes of pump failure are seal leak-age, bearing failure and impeller or housing erosion.

Seal failure can result from a worn/loose bearing, dirty/degraded coolant, driving the vehicle with a very low coolant level, and, of course, old age.

A faulty bearing usually is caused by excessive belt tension, and leads to pul-ley wobble and a distinc-tive growling sound. A bad bearing soon will damage the seal, and vice versa, eventually causing serious trouble. A worn or erod-ed impeller, which is rare, can cause engine overheat-ing because of insufficient coolant flow.

Did your major service include renewing the tim-ing belt? If so, this might explain why replacement of

the pump was recommend-ed. During a timing-belt replacement, disassem-bly makes the normally difficult-to-access water pump ripe for the picking. Also, if the pump should ever seize, it will likely damage/destroy the tim-ing belt, which can result in a messy and expensive valve/piston collision.

For these reasons, many shops recommend replacing the water pump along with the timing belt, regardless of its apparent condition. It’s also possi-ble the replacement rec-ommendation was made because of now-noticeable pulley looseness or visi-ble staining around the

pump’s vent hole, an indi-cation of impending great-er seal leakage.

One indicator of a great repair shop is its bedside manner. Yours missed a chance to impress you with its experience and diligence by not better explaining the services performed on your vehi-cle. Instead of wonder-ing about its credibil-ity, you might have told friends how sharp your shop was.

Toyota sells 1 millionth Prius hybrid in USDETROIT — The Toy-

ota Prius hybrid, once viewed as a science experiment for environ-mentalists, has become a mainstream vehicle in the United States, with the company selling more than a million of the cars nationwide.

Toyota announced Wednesday that it had passed the million sales milestone, helped by brisk sales recently as U.S. gasoline prices con-tinued to rise toward $4 per gallon.

The Prius, which is powered by both a gas-oline engine and an electric motor, gets an estimated 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 on the highway. Aside from electric vehicles, it

is the most fuel-efficient car in the U.S., accord-ing to the Environmen-tal Protection Agency.

“Prius paved the way for hybrids,” Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and gen-eral manager in the U.S., said in a state-ment.

Toyota began selling the Prius 11 years ago when gas prices were low. At first it was a car for the environmentally conscious, but as pric-es spiked during the decade, its popularity increased. In the first quarter of this year, Toyota already has sold nearly 43,000, which is 52 percent more than at the same time last year, according to Autodata Corp. In 2010, the com-

pany sold more than 140,000 Priuses.

Prius sales worldwide topped 2 million last year, and Toyota said its total global hybrid vehicle sales passed the 3 million mark in last month.

“Prius has become synonymous with the word hybrid, and as we see fuel prices starting to rise again, it has accounted for more than 60 percent of hybrid passenger car sales so far this year,” Carter said.

As of Thursday, the nationwide average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.71, up 88 cents from a year ago, according to AAA. The price peaked at $4.14 per gallon in July 2008,

a year in which Toyo-ta sold nearly 159,000 Priuses.

Some Toyota dealers have been reporting that Priuses are in now in short supply because of high demand and facto-ry outages in Japan due to the March 11 earth-quake. The quake and tsunami forced Toyota to stop production at most Japanese factories. But the company restarted two plants that make Prius and Lexus mod-els on March 28.

Moody’s Investors Ser-vice warned Wednesday it may downgrade its credit rating for Toyota Motor Corp. due to the financial fallout from suspended car produc-tion from the quake and tsunami.

Home on the road: Boomers trading in houses for RVsImagine being able to

tour the country without ever leaving home. This is not an oxymoron, but an attainable lifestyle made possible in a recreational vehicle.

“There are so many places to go and see,” said Ben Hopkins of Veurinks’ RV Center in Grand Rap-ids, Mich. “It could take you five years just to see the National Parks.”

Imagine being able to follow a favorite sports team around the coun-try, supporting them at away games; following the Oregon Trail or Route 66 to the West Coast, stop-ping at all of the historic sites along the way; tak-ing some time to learn to surf while living on the beach or heading to the Rockies and learn to

ski. NASCAR fans might follow the races around the country, where many tracks offer trackside camping. These are just a few of the adventures one can enjoy while liv-ing in an RV.

Hopkins has noticed a definite increase in the number of people who are choosing to live, rather than just vacation, in their RVs. Baby boomers are selling their house and furnishings and spend-ing their time traveling. “They are hitting the road for eight to 10 years,” he said.

What is it about RV liv-ing that is so appealing? “Freedom,” said Bill Shef-fer, Michigan Association of Recreational Vehicles & Campgrounds.”The free-dom to choose a region of the country to travel to and explore, then the

freedom to move on to another region. Buying a retirement home is a big commitment to a new location, new people and new surroundings. Many full-timers travel for sev-eral years looking for the right place to call home or to call their second home. The RV lifestyle affords them that opportunity.”

It is that freedom to explore and move on that attracted Mike and Dar-lene Kohuts, who traded in their Michigan homes in Pinckney and Clark-ston last year to live in an RV.

“If you don’t like your neighbors or the season, you can always move on or just move to another campsite,” they said.

Las Vegas area, the couple recently spent time help-ing Habitat For Human-ity, operated a Christmas tree lot in California and attended the Rose Bowl Parade. They have also enjoyed visits from family and friends and spent a lot of time sight seeing.

“We are planning on doing this type of lifestyle for a very long time,” they said.

Sheffer believes the opportunity to see all there is to see is another factor that makes RV liv-

ing so appealing.“I believe that many of

the baby boomer genera-tion have had a long-time love affair with exploring our country and visiting the sights we studied in our grade-school geogra-phy and history classes. This generation is not so beholden to the electron-ic age and fast-food life-style.”

One trend Hopkins has noticed is some full-timers are downsizing.

At first, many pur-chase the largest home they can find, perhaps 45 feet long. But, after a

few years, they return to buy a home that is only 32 feet long, which provides better fuel economy and easier maneuverability. Hopkins said the larger homes are ideal for those who stay in one place for three or six months at a time. But those who want to constantly travel are often happier with a smaller vehicle.

Choosing the perfect RVWhile there are

many styles, sizes and types of recreational vehicles, there are two that are most common with those living full time in their RV — the fifth wheel and the Class A motorhome.

“There are good things to be said about both,” said Bruce Rid-ley, a Hamburg Town-ship, Mich., resident who spends six months of the year in his moto-rhome.

Traveling in a moto-rhome, for example, allows everyone to be together during the trip, no matter what they are doing. A pas-senger may fix a snack or use the bathroom without the driver hav-ing to stop. Likewise, pets are allowed to roam throughout the home, without being separated from the driver.

However, unless one wants to set up and pack up the home each time they need to go somewhere, a separate vehicle will need to be towed. And, when it is time for maintenance, or if the motorhome breaks down, owners are temporarily with-out their house.

Fifth wheels are towed with a pickup, so there is always a vehicle at hand and if it breaks, a rental can easily replace it for a short period of time. ome fifth wheels can also tow a small boat and others have space for motorcycles right on board.

However, because it is towing a house, the truck will need to be large and may not offer the best fuel economy.

Here are some addi-tional things to con-sider:

Class A Motorhome

Often referred to as condos on wheels, these motorhomes resemble a bus and offer the most luxurious accommoda-tions. High-end mod-els include the finishes and designs one would expect in a custom-built home. Built on a specially designed motor vehicle chas-sis, they range in size from 21 feet to 45 feet and can tow a vehicle behind them.

When parked, screens cover the front windows, providing privacy, and the driver and passenger chairs turn to become addi-tional seating. Typical-ly, motorhomes have a master suite with addi-tional sleeping accom-modations available by converting sofas or tables. Leather seats, GPS units, back-up cameras and all of the features of a luxury vehicle make driving safe and comfortable.

Motorhomes can come with either gas or diesel engines. Like a car, gas engines are in the front of the vehicle.

Engine mainte-nance is both cheaper and easier than that required on a diesel engine. The cost of the gas motorhome is also less than that of a die-sel.

Diesel engines are housed in the back of the vehicle, mak-ing for a quieter ride. While more expen-sive to maintain, die-sel engines offer more power, particular-ly in the mountains, and have a longer life

Fifth Wheel

A fifth wheel is a unique type of travel trailer, which is pulled with a special hitch that sits inside of the bed of a pickup. The hitch makes the trailer more stable and easier to maneuver than a traditional tow. Some fifth wheels may also tow a small trailer or boat, allowing travel-ers to take more with them, since they can use the truck as their primary vehicle.

Because the space over the hitch is also used, fifth wheels offer spacious, multi-level floor plans. They can range in length from 21 feet to 45 feet, with plenty of options avail-able. Fifth wheels may have multiple bath-rooms and multiple bedrooms.

Toy-haul trailers are fifth wheels with a garage on the back that offers a ramp and space to haul motor-cycles, ATVs or oth-er toys. When the toys are unloaded at a campsite, the space can be converted to a spare bedroom or fam-ily room with the touch of the button. Many of the higher-end mod-els also have a half bath in the garage and water hookups to make cleaning off the mud, salt or sand collected during an adventurous day easy.

For those who love to spend time with nature, outdoor kitchens and out-door entertainment cen-ters make hanging out and entertaining easy. Beach lovers will appre-ciate exterior doors that go directly to the bath-room, so they can use the facilities without tracking sand through the entire home.

Buying an RV

There are many RV manufacturers to buy from — all are Ameri-can companies located in America. According to the Recreation Vehi-cle Industry Association , more than 60 percent of recreational vehicles are made in

Elkhart County, Ind., and another 15 percent are built in Oregon and California.

Each manufactur-er offers several models and each model typically offers multiple floor plans to choose from, along with additional upgrades, providing hundreds of options.

As one would before buying a house, indus-try experts recommend viewing a variety of floor plans at a large dealer or RV show to become famil-iar with the options.

Buying guides and manufacturer websites are also good ways to help

narrow the choices. Frugal Retirement Living (www.frugal-retirement-living.com) recommends creating a personalized checklist to help stay focused dur-ing the buying process. Go RVing (www.gorving.com) suggests renting an RV to make sure it is the right one before purchas-ing. Sheffer agrees.

“Most definitely, rent-ing an RV is a great way to experience the RV and camping lifestyle. I am not talking about just a weekend, but 1,500-mile to 2,000-mile trip over a two- to three-week time period — really devote yourself to the experi-ence,” he said.

Once the decision is made, it is time to talk financing. MARVAC rec-ommends checking credit

history before applying for an RV loan.

“RVs are considered lux-ury purchases, so lenders are especially cautious,” reads a MARVAC press release. “A credit score of 700 will allow for the best financing.”

According to the Rec-reation Vehicle Industry Association, RV loans are typically 10-15 years, with down payments of 10 per-cent to 20 percent.

While taking the jump and living full-time in an RV might not be for every-one, Sheffer said a vaca-tion in an RV is something everyone should try.

“There are a lot of peo-ple who have never expe-rienced RVing or camp-ing and to those I would say try it at least once,” he said.
