Automakers rolling out smaller modelsLOS ANGELES — The

small-car wars are on with a vengeance.

New models from Ford and General Motors will challenge decades of Japa-nese dominance this year.

Meanwhile, fast-grow-ing Hyundai ratchets up the pressure with the styl-ish and advanced Elantra compact and the upcoming Accent subcompact.

And buoyed by its partner-ship with small-car special-

ist Fiat, Chrysler promises to join the 40-mpg club with a replacement for the Dodge Caliber late this year.

“Small-car sales have ris-en every year since 2004 except 2009 and 2010, when the recession affected every-thing,” said Ford’s vehicle development chief, Derrick Kuzak. “We’re convinced there’s an ongoing march to higher small-car sales in the United States.”

The newcomers target the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, America’s No. 1 and

No. 2 selling small cars in 2010, and benchmarks for value and reliability.

“The age of the Toyo-ta Corolla and the under-whelming Civic concept Hon-da unveiled at the Detroit auto show open the door to growth by Ford, Chevrolet and Hyundai,” said inde-pendent marketing con-sultant Gordon Wangers of Las Vegas Lakes, Nev. “The Civic and Corolla have seldom been vulnerable, but they both are now. Hyundai, Ford and Chevrolet can take

advantage.”

could reshape the American auto market this year.

Longtime leaders like the Honda Civic and Toy-ota Corolla face unprece-dented challenges. Peren-nial laggards Chevrolet, Ford and Hyundai have vastly improved new com-pacts. More competition is coming.

The new-product blitz amounts to a multibillion-dollar bet on an untested hypothesis. Thousands of jobs from Michigan and Ohio to Mexico depend on the veracity of automakers’ belief that Americans are about to buy more small cars and pay more for them.

Last year, U.S. sales of small cars gained just 0.3 percent, while the overall market climbed 11 per-cent.

Yet in the automakers’ favor, betting on higher gas prices has always been a

good long-term play.Weighing against a boom

in small-car sales are Amer-icans’ preference for larger vehicles and the steadily ris-ing fuel economy of midsize cars and crossover SUVs.

“If Americans have a choice of a high-mpg mid-size versus a compact, they will always pick the bigger car,” said Jim Hall, manag-ing director of consultant 2953 Analytics.

Small cars for AmericaThe new compacts hitting

the road have more features and better fuel economy.

Chevrolet offers a version of its roomy Cruze compact

the EPA rated at a best-in-class 42 m.p.g. on the high-way. The stingiest versions of the Ford Focus and Fies-ta both promise 40 m.p.g. Hyundai counters with the sleek Elantra, which hits 40 m.p.g.

The change began at GM and Ford several years ago. The automakers tapped their global engineering expertise to develop bet-ter small cars for Ameri-ca. Their previous attempts were half-hearted at best.

“We had small cars, but we they weren’t competi-tive,” said Bill Perkins, presi-dent of Perkins Automotive Group, which includes Tay-

lor Chevrolet and Merollis Chevrolet. “GM restyled, reengineered and re-priced, and they added electron-ic features young buyers want.

“We’ve got the right car at the right time at the right price,” he said of the Cruze. “For the first time, we’re not afraid to compete with the Civic head to head.”

Cars of a new generationSome researchers say

they believe Generation Y, the millennials whose peak earning years were post-poned by the credit crash, learned a lesson about fru-gality from the borrow-big ‘00s.

The 68 million millenni-als have the power to create and collapse whole vehicle segments, just as the baby boomers created the mini-van and SUV booms and marginalized the station wagon, Ford analyst Erich Merkle predicts. “The small-car segment will continue to grow throughout this

decade. Affordability and utility matter more to mil-lennials than size.”

Their high fuel economy notwithstanding, the new compacts are bigger and roomier than the cars that preceded them.

“The Cruze, Focus and Elantra have gotten bigger over time,” said Stephanie Brinley, analyst with EMC Strategic Communications of Troy, Mich. “They’re clos-er to the mainstream U.S. vehicle than ever before. The traditional ceiling on how many people will buy compacts may no longer apply.”

What could go wrong?New subcompacts such as

the Fiesta, Sonic and Accent are closer to the old defini-tion of a compact car. That — and the fact that some compacts offer higher fuel economy — may limit their sales potential.

“I don’t think we know the size of the market for subcompacts,” said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst with

Edmunds.com.The fuel economy of mid-

size cars and crossover SUVs also is increasing rapidly enough that they may chal-lenge the new compacts. As they approach 40 mpg and more, the financial incen-tive to switch to a small car dwindles.

“Fuel economy is a mov-ing target,” said John Sou-sanis, analyst with Wards Auto. “It’s going up in all segments. You don’t have to buy a really small car to get good mileage.”

More than gas mileageFuel economy alone is

unlikely to be enough to shift Americans toward smaller cars.

That’s why Ford, Chevro-let and Hyundai equipped their new models with more features and comfort.

“We have to change peo-ple’s minds about our small cars,” Ford’s Kuzak said. “We have to make them exciting to look at, with better tech-nology and higher quality than the competition.”

China auto imports nearly double in 2010SHANGHAI — China’s

imports of foreign cars nearly doubled last year, with Japanese and Ger-man models most in favor among buyers looking to upgrade their vehicles, an industry association said Tuesday.

The quasi-official China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said car imports jumped 93 per-cent last year from 2009 to 813,600 vehicles. By value, imports doubled to $30.64 billion, while Chi-na’s vehicle exports rose 40 percent from a year earlier to a record $51.8 billion.

An explosion in demand and sluggish sales in the recession-stricken West helped China overtake the U.S. as the largest car

market by sales of new vehicles in 2009. Last year, sales of passenger cars, excluding large bus-es, jumped by a third to 13.7 million vehicles.

While domestic-made models of foreign joint ven-tures dominate the mar-ket, demand for higher-quality imports remains strong.

Imports of SUVs led the market at 351,400 vehi-cles, up 69 percent from 2009, while imports of sedans more than dou-bled to 343,700, the report said. Imports also more than doubled, to 89,900.

Despite a spate of safety-related recalls by Japanese manufactur-ers, imports from Japan accounted for the largest share, followed by Ger-many, South Korea and the United States.

China’s auto exports are mainly buses, trucks and knockdown kits for assembly overseas, sold by domestic manufacturers to developing countries.

So far, exports of made-in-China vehicles, espe-cially by foreign joint ven-tures, have been limited, partly due to the struggle to keep up with surging local demand. Last year they accounted for less than 3 percent of the 18.3 million vehicles produced in China, far behind South Korea, Thailand, India and Brazil.

Passenger car sales slowed in January as tax breaks for energy-efficient cars lapsed and cities began tightening curbs on vehicle use to help combat traffic con-gestion and smog, accord-ing to the Shanghai-based

China Passenger Car Association.

It reported Monday that sales of passenger cars fell 10.3 percent in January from the month before to

965,238 vehicles. On an annual basis, sales rose 12.6 percent.

Weaker demand inside China would likely spur efforts to export more to

other fast-growing mar-kets, though rising costs for labor and materials already are already erod-ing its price competitive-ness.

Q&A: Try cleaning valve before buying a new oneQ: I have a 2007

Dodge Grand Caravan with the “check engine” light on. I checked it with a code reader and got a P0404 code: “Exhaust Gas Recircu-lation Circuit Range/Performance.” A new EGR valve costs $80. Is there any way to clean or fix it and turn off the light?

A: Notice that the

code does not say “faulty EGR valve.” The P0404 code indi-cates the powertrain control module is not seeing the EGR sensor performance or posi-tion that it expects to see. This could mean a clogged EGR tube, a faulty EGR sensor or harness or a prob-

lem with the electron-ic EGR valve itself. There is no specified service for these com-ponents, but you could remove the valve and tube to inspect for car-bon buildup that may be blocking the f low of recirculated exhaust gases.

If the problem is corrected, the check-engine light may turn itself off after a num-ber of key cycles with-out seeing the fault. Otherwise, you would need to use a scan tool to reset the system. Some auto-parts stores offer code reading and reset service at no cost.

Q: I’m losing heat

from my 2000 Dodge Durango. The heat gradually decreas-

es until there is noth-ing but cold air. When the car idles, the air gets cool and then warms up when I increase the rpm. I took it to a mechan-ic and explained the problem. The shop flushed the heater core, replaced the timing cover and installed a new 195-degree ther-mostat. The heater core and water pump were replaced within the past two years. I am still not satisfied with the heat. What is the next step?

A: Does the vehicle

lose or consume any coolant? A cylinder head gasket or intake manifold gasket leak may allow the coolant level to drop enough to introduce air into

the system. This could stall the f low of cool-ant, causing heating f luctuations. A chemi-cal test for the pres-ence of exhaust hydro-carbons in the coolant might confirm a head gasket issue.

An often-overlooked potential cause is a faulty radiator pres-sure cap. If the cap fails to hold pressure — typically between 12 and 16 pounds per square inch — coolant can be pushed out of the radiator and into the recovery tank and not be drawn back into the system. Again, this may allow air in the system, slowing cool-ant f low to the heater core.

And finally, a repeated bleeding of the cooling sys-

tem might expel any trapped air and improve heater perfor-mance.

Q: We have a 2004

Prius that we have driven more than 106,000 trouble-free miles, except for replac-ing a water pump at 82,000 miles. Now we have received a recall from Toyota to take our car to our dealer to have the water pump replaced at no charge. The dealer says this is not the same mechan-ical water pump we replaced earlier. Are there really two water pumps in a Prius?

A: Yes. Your hybrid-powered vehicle has both a small gasoline engine and an electri-cal motor drive sys-

tem. Each has its own, separate cooling sys-tem. Apparently, the mechanical water pump for the gasoline engine has already been replaced. Now, Toyota is replacing the electrical “coolant heat storage pump” for the electrical power inverter that converts high-voltage DC cur-rent into AC current to power the motor and generators. This pump cools the power invert-er and is integrated into the powertrain control system.

Q&A: No car can ‘run away’ with its driver in control Q: I drive a 2009 Toy-

ota and have a fear of a runaway vehicle. The dealer has test-driven the vehicle and told me it’s OK. What advice do you have?

A: Check with the dealer to see if your vehicle has been cov-ered in any recalls or technical service bul-letins. More important-ly — and this applies to every car owner and motorist — please remember that a motor vehicle cannot “run away” or continue to accelerate unintention-ally if you simply shift into neutral or turn off the ignition key. Every driver, regardless of what vehicle they drive, should practice these

simple procedures so that their response will be automatic.

Modern motor vehi-cles will not “over-rev” in neutral with the throttle open. The engine limiter will hold the engine at about 4000 rpm by cycling fuel delivery on and off. So shifting into neutral will disengage the vehi-cle’s drive and accelera-tion while maintaining the power steering and power brakes.

But even turning off the ignition while driv-ing will not disable the steering or brakes. You will lose power assist to these systems, mean-ing you’ll need to apply more physical effort to steer/stop the vehicle, but the steering and brakes will continue to operate and allow you to

control the vehicle. And finally, please

remember that you can-not turn the key to the “lock” position unless the transmission shift lever is in park — so you cannot unintention-ally lock the steering by turning the ignition off.

Identify and practice these simple procedures to prepare yourself — just in case.

Q: I own a 1999 Olds-

mobile Eighty-Eight with 62,000 miles on it that I bought new. The last time I had it inspected, the mechanic indicated that the brake lines are rusty and I should think about replacing them. What are your thoughts?

A: Of all the things that could possibly fail

on an automobile and put the occupants at risk, this may well be the single most over-looked potential fail-ure. The steel hydrau-lic brake lines typically run underneath the vehicle, where they are exposed to road debris, salt and sand. Just like the chassis and body of the vehicle, they can rust when exposed to these elements in harsh climates.

Interestingly, steel brake lines may be as vulnerable to corrosion from the inside due to moisture absorbed into the hydraulic brake flu-id. This is why many car makers, mechan-ics and enthusiasts — including me — suggest changing brake fluid every couple of years by bleeding the brake sys-

tem to fully exchange the fluid with fresh, uncontaminated brake fluid.

If you’ve never had the brake fluid changed, or the mechanic can visually show you brake lines with textured, scaly or flaky corrosion, by all means have them replaced. No question the cost of replacement will be far less than the cost and consequences of brake failure while driving.

Q: I have a 2003 Toy-ota Camry with 89,463 miles on it. The auto shop tells me I need to replace the timing belt at 90,000 miles. Is this true? Is there any way I would know whether it is really needed? I am on a fixed income, and this is very expensive.

A: You didn’t identify which engine is in your Camry. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine uses a timing chain that does not need peri-odic replacement. The 3-liter V6 engine does use belt-driven cam-shafts, and Toyota rec-ommends replacement of the belt at 90,000 miles or 72 months. Although this is not an interference engine and would not be damaged by timing-belt failure, you’ll know precisely when it fails because the engine will stop dead in its tracks. n Paul Brand, author of “How

Chrysler hopes to rev up comeback with new 300

D E T R O I T— T h e Chrysler 300, once a hot-selling sedan dis-tinguished by a tall grille and big wheels, is attempting a comeback. It’s an important car in a pivotal year for the com-pany, which must start making money before a public stock sale can happen.

The new 300, revealed at the recent Detroit Auto Show, keeps the basic look of the old: It’s a muscular car with a long hood and short back. But the remade version is sleeker, and Chrysler toned down the gangster-mobile grille and replaced its round headlamps with subtle rectangular ones. Gas mileage went up 8 percent and the interior has softer-looking sur-faces and cool-blue dash-board lighting.

Chrysler wants it to attract a broad range of buyers, from those who want a larger car to those who seek high-perfor-mance luxury.

Like the company that builds it, the 300 used to generate millions in prof-its, but has been neglect-ed for years. Introduced in 2004, sales peaked in 2005 at 144,000, but barely topped 37,000 last year. And just like the reborn company, the big car has the odds stacked against it. Although the new car’s gas mileage went up 2 mpg on the highway with a V-6, the big car comes out at a time when experts pre-dict that gas prices could reach $4 per gallon this year.

Chrysler’s top-selling

models are Jeeps, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans. And despite an intense effort to update or replace 16 outdated vehicles in the past year, Chrysler still lags competitors in fuel economy. Its lineup last year got an average of 19.2 mpg, below the expected industry aver-age of 22.5 mpg, and far below industry leader Toyota Motor Corp. at 25.4 mpg.

Even Detroit rivals who once relied on SUVs and trucks as Chrysler does, have shifted small-er. Ford has introduced the Fiesta and new Focus in the past year, both of which can get nearly 40 mpg on the freeway. Chrysler’s small offer-ings, except the Fiat 500 minicar, are in the low 30s.

“If we are looking at $4 plus-gallon gasoline, it’s got to nick their real money makers,” said Joe Phillippi, president of New Jersey-based Auto-Trends Consulting LLC. “They run the risk of los-ing sales to all other com-petitors that have a big stable of high fuel econ-omy vehicles.”

Still, the company is better off than it was in 2009, when it required a $12.5 billion govern-

ment bailout and a quick trip through bankruptcy court to avoid liquidation. The U.S. government installed Fiat CEO Ser-gio Marchionne to man-age the company and he saved millions by sharing engineering, design and technology with Italy’s Fiat. Chrysler also closed plants and slashed the work force from 80,000 in 2007 to the current 52,000.

The resulting cost reduct ions lowered Chrysler’s break-even sales level to 2 million cars and trucks world-wide. But the company sold only 1.5 million vehi-cles last year, meaning it must boost sales by one-third this year just to stem the losses. It will need even higher sales to impress Wall Street with net profits.

Such a huge sales gain in one year is rare in the auto industry. Even South Korea’s Hyundai, which had a banner 2010 in the U.S., could man-age a mere 24-percent increase.

Some signs of prog-ress are already evident. Engineers went through the cars and trucks, elim-inating rattles, firming up suspensions and add-ing insulation to make them quieter. Cheap-look-ing plastic interiors were replaced with soft mate-rials. Seats became more supportive. The upgrades made a huge difference for the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. Sales tripled in December from a year earlier, when Chrysler still sold the old model.

next couple of years, says Bragman.

The new 300 is to get 27 mpg (11.5 kpl) on the highway, not bad for a big car but not an attractive buy when gas is expen-sive.

When the current 300 came out, some called it a “baby Bentley ” because of its likeness to the exclusive British cars. Its grille and big wheels were jarring to some. Others loved the sedan’s 1920s gangster look and it became a sta-tus symbol in suburban neighborhoods and cities. Sales stayed strong for several years but start-ed to slide by 2008, when gas prices jumped and the design began to look dated. Luxury car sales generally drop when gas prices go up.

The starting price is around $28,000, and it’s expected to compete with Detroit sedans like the Cadillac CTS, Buick LaCrosse and Ford Tau-rus. But Chrysler said well-equipped versions with the V-8 Hemi engine can compete with the more expensive BMW 5-Series and Lexus LS 460.

The 300 and other Chrysler vehicles also have been wounded by quality issues. For years the company has relied on bold designs and perfor-mance to attract custom-ers rather than reliabil-ity scores from outside groups such as Consumer Reports magazine.

Last year the Chrysler brand ranked last of 27 brands in the maga-zine’s reliability survey, while Jeep ranked 20th and Dodge was 24th. No Chrysler vehicles scored above average in reliabil-ity.

Marchionne, whose company was given 20 percent ownership of Chrysler, has said that he’d like to repay the gov-ernment loan and return to the stock market with in initial public offering late this year.

The U.S. government owns 10 percent of the company and would sell at least part of its stake to recoup more of the bailout money. A union health care trust fund owns most of the rest at 68 percent, while the Canadian government controls 2 percent.

Phillippi says Chrysler can’t go to Wall Street with an IPO in late 2011 unless it makes money earlier in the year.

“If you can’t post a net profit in a market that’s a million units better this year than it was last year, you’re going to have a really hard time selling your story to the Street,” he said.
