The math is pretty impressive. So, too, usually are the results. The annual Cadillac News Track and Field Invitational

Meet has featured a U.S. Olympian, several NCAA Di-vision I runners and a large number of MHSAA statechampions.

All of that from 11 schools in Wexford, Missaukee andOsceola counties.

The Olympian, of course, is Cadillac’s Paul McMullenwho competed in the 1996 Atlanta Games. The NCAADivision I athletes range from Cadillac’s Katie (Erdman)Waits, Alisha (Cole) Reichenbach, Kaitlyn Patterson andRiley Norman to Pine River’s Rachel (Whitley) Mod-

derman and Lia (Jones) Palomino to Reed City’s SamiMichell.

This year’s version is the 44th annual, making it thelongest-running newspaper-sponsored honor roll meetin northern Michigan. It will be held again on MemorialDay, May 30, at Cadillac’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

While there are no “superstars” on the horizon for 2016,things could be wide open to set some individual andprogram bests on Memorial Day — if the weather cooper-ates.

On the girls’ side, two names to watch are Mesick se-nior Sierra King and Cadillac junior Liz Pyles.

Looking for a relaxing evening of golf without theprohibitive cost? Disc golf might be right up your al-ley.

Played like regular golf, except for the use of Fris-bee-type discs instead of a ball and clubs, the sporthas gained massive popularity in the U.S. and nor th-ern Michigan.

Three different courses in Wexford County offer arange of difficulty and terrain challenges for boththe beginner and experienced player.

Courses at Kenwood Park and Diggins Hill are freefor anyone to use.

Kenwood Park features 24 holes set on a flat coursefilled with trees that act as natural obstacles.

The Diggins Hill course features 18 holes on a ter-rain with elevation shifts and plenty of trees.

The Wild Haven Disc Golf Resort, located a few

miles south of Manton, features some of the mostchallenging holes in the area.

Owner Michael Wildner said the course is morewide open and contains shots from varying eleva-tions and tee distances. He said wind also is more ofa factor on his course.

The course is open for anyone to use, but Wildnerasked that players pay a small amount in order forhim to maintain the grounds and add improvements.

Payments can be dropped in a tube on site, similar

to how forest campground fees are paid. The Kenwood Park course is located off North Bou-

levard, in Cadillac. The Diggins Hill course is locatedoff East River Street, in Cadillac. Wild Haven DiscGolf Resort is located on East 18 1/2 Road, which isoff U.S. 131. The course has a sign that reads “YetiTech,” which is visible from the road.

If a shing license is the only thing you need to revisityour favorite shing hole, the Michigan Department ofNatural Resources hopes to lure you to the water on FreeFishing Weekend.

This summer’s free shing weekend is June 11 and 12.For two days, the state waives all shing license fees forboth residents and out-of-state visitors. Keep in mindthat free shing is not a free-for-all, however: all shingregulations still apply. As it has in the past, the Carl T.Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center will offer a shingprogram over the weekend. The center is located at 6087

for trophies with winners determined by the number ofsh caught and not the size of sh.

He also said the center makes its stock of shing polesavailable for would-be shermen to drop a line in thenearby canal connecting lakes Cadillac and Mitchell, with anglers receiving help choosing bait, putting it onthe hook and identifying their catch.

“You don’t even need equipment,” he said. “We haveultra light Ugly Sticks we let people use so we are notgoing to be handing you a cheap rod and reel. It is goodequipment.”

While the gear, as well as bait, will be available on freeshing weekend, Shaw said it also is available free ofcharge every other day of the summer. The only differ-ence is you will need a license to sh.

Shaw added the hope is that people will want to contin-ue to sh after they have fun during the free weekend.

“It is a good opportunity for people to get outside. Thewhole thing (free shing weekend) is to allow people totry out shing without having to purchase a license inhopes that they have so much fun they will buy one andgo again,” Shaw said.

At that point in the season, pan sh are usually on theirbeds and can be easily caught. Weather in June is usually

good and typically warm so many people are ready to getoutside and have some fun.

If a person needs a copy of shing regulations for thisseason they are available online at www.michigan.gov/dnr, at any DNR ofce or the Carl T. Johnson Hunting andFishing Center.

SOUNDS OF JEEPS & PRAYERKICK OFF SUMMER SEASON

    24 ON THE GO - Cadillac News www.cadillacnews.com | Friday, April 22, 2016

It’s an unlikely combination, butresidents and visitors alike havecome to expect Jeeps and prayer tokick off the summer season in North-ern Michigan.

The Mesick Jeep Blessing startedoff as a gathering of a handful ofJeep enthusiasts who would take tothe trails outside Mesick following ashort prayer.

It has transformed into an annualevent that draws hundreds of Jeepsand other off-road vehicles, as well asthousands of spectators.

Deb and Gordy Stafford started theblessing 15 years ago.

“Whoever thought it would get thisbig?” Deb said. “But it’s always been

about the blessing. To get people to-gether with like-minded interests andpromote a safe year of off-roading.”

As part of the blessing, severalobstacle courses are set up for thosewho are interested in riding. The costto enter a vehicle into an obstacle

course is $20. Your vehicle doesnot have to be a Jeep to enter into acourse.

Courses returning this year will bestocker, intermediate, Chad Ville, and

mud bog.Chad Carmichael, pastor of MoreyCommunity Church, prays over thecrowd of Jeep riders eager to take onthe courses.

“We bless ‘em, then we break ’em,”Carmichael said.

Carmichael has rode trails onDrummond Island, Twisted TrailsOff Road Park and Rocks and Val-leys Off-Road Park. The obstacleshe encounters along the trails in his1975 Ford Bronco inspire many of the

obstacles built for the annual event,he said.

Cost to attend the event as a specta-tor is $5 per person 16 years old andup. Cost for those under 16 is free.

The event will be held on the Satur-day before Mother’s Day, April 30.

The Interlochen 2016 Summer Arts Festival is perhapsone of the hidden gems of Michigan.

“It’s the largest arts festival in Northern Michigan andit’s one of the most comprehensive arts festivals in thecountry,” said Christopher Gruits, executive director ofInterlochen Presents. “A lot of people don’t even realizehow big it is.”

This year for the 52nd season of the festival, Huey Lew-is and the News, Martina McBride, Tears for Fears andeven Jay Leno will be featured.

Performances this year start on Thursday, June 23.This will be a concert by the Steve Miller Band at 8 p.m.

in the Kresge Auditorium. Jay Leno and Martina Mc-Bride will be performing at the same location with Lenoperforming on Friday, July 29, at 8 p.m. and McBride onFriday, Aug. 12, at 8 p.m.

Music, of course, isn’t all that’s offered at the festival. There will also be a performance of Shakespeare’s “Ro-meo and Juliet” in an open theater.

“We really have every type of arts presentation here,”said Gruits. “We have everything from writers to visualarts gallery to modern dance or Shakespeare.”

One of the unique performances Gruits talked aboutwas called “LUMA: Art in Darkness.”

LUMA, as Gruits explained, “uses darkness as a canvasand light as a paintbrush and performance tool.”

The show is conducted in a completely dark theater anduses a beautifully inter-woven ow of light, dancers andmusic to create a colorful and mesmerizing performance. This particular show by LUMA features Melissa Staro-szik, Canada’s rhythmic gymnastics champion along

with seven other dancers. While the Interlochen Summer Arts Festival certainly

brings in some big names from the world of arts, thisyear the festival is focusing on showcasing some of theupcoming artists with the “Young Americans Festival,”which, as Gruits explained, is a “festival within a festi-val.”

Interlochen Summer Arts Festivalwill showcase rising and current stars in the arts

Huey Lewis and the News will visit Interlochen this summer during the annual Arts Festival on July 19.
