On The Move A Monthly Publication of the Southside Community Center
Please Stay
Safe On Ice Falling on the ice can be
very, very BAD and we
don’t want it to happen
to you. The Center puts
de-icer on the sidewalks by the building, but
the parking lot can still be very slippery. In the
parking lot, be sure to wear footwear with
traction, walk flat-footed, slowly and perhaps
use a walking stick.
By the way, we really appreciate your
donations of bags of de-icer to keep us
all safe. Thanks!
Black Tie Non-Event Many thanks to everyone who sent
their RSVP for the Black Tie Non-Event
NOT being held New Year’s Eve. It
seems that family tables, champagne
and limousine service are popular items.
No worry! If you didn’t have time to sign up for this non -party during this busy
holiday season, it’s not too late.
You can send your RSVP any time and you will still not need to attend as you
celebrate the new year and the month of January from the comfort of your home.
Just fill out the RSVP card you received in the mail or use the one on the last page
of this newsletter and bring or mail it to the Center with your payment.
The best part is that because we have no expenses for putting on the event, all the
money goes directly to support our educational and recreational programs.
Reminder - Save Your Garage Sale
Donations Till February! No garage sale donations right now, please. We have
absolutely no space to store sale items for several
months. We will let you know in Feb when you can
bring in donations for the May 31-June 1 sale.
Thanks for your help!
2 January 2019
EDITOR’S NOTE January is for slowing down and getting ready for the coming year. The Center is like that
too (except for regular games, classes and activities which continue normally). So this month’s newsletter
is only 12 pages. Some of your usual activities and trips can be found after the calendar.

rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of
depression later in life than those who do not volunteer.“ CNCS Report
A Note from Lisa - Happy New Year! There are so many things to share and not enough space in this edition, so I will try to be
brief. ☺ 2018 marked a huge turning point for the Center thanks to our dedicated members,
volunteers, staff and Board. We exceeded budget expectations in 2018; a strategic plan was
developed for the Center; our policies were updated; new events and fundraisers were
successfully implemented; over $30,000 in donated capital improvements were made to the
Center by our community and business partners; and new board members joined to help us
move forward with our strategic planning. To all, thank you!!
We had successful Santa Breakfasts, thanks to Tom, Dan, Mary, John and the many
volunteers who made it a success. If you haven’t volunteered for this event, consider doing it
in 2019. It is wonderful to see the children’s faces light up when they see Santa and get their
pictures taken — dogs too!
A huge thank you to the apprentice painters who painted the WA Trust room and parts of our
foyer in December. They will be back to paint the ballroom from January 7 – 11. They do this
for free!
Thank you to everyone who enjoyed and played along with our Black-Tie Non-Event by
sending in their donations. It was a lot of fun to read your selections. Based on the great
feedback, we may do it again in 2019!
In December, Judy Cadreau resigned as our volunteer Kitchen Manager. Judy has been a
dedicated volunteer spending many hours every week at the Center, organizing and setting up
for events, rentals and other functions. She has worked tirelessly for the Center. Judy,
THANK YOU for everything you have done for the Center and members.
2019 is going to be a great year for Southside Community Center! So many events, programs
and activities are planned. So hold on to your seat and join us for a great ride this year! I am
excited about the future of our Community Center! Cheers!

Santa Says Thanks
for Help With Christmas December’s three “Breakfasts with Santa” were
a smashing success thanks to many folks who
donated time, energy, clothing and decorations
to make it happen. Several hundred people attended, ate
breakfast and had pictures taken in Santa's sleigh. Seeing the
wonder and joy on the faces of the children was priceless and
made it all worthwhile. Santa thanks all the Christmas elves:
John Lackie for donating Santa hats and necklaces
Carol Gabel for donating Santa hats & making elf clothing
Barbara Haynes and Sheila Goulding were Mrs. Claus
Teal Ladies who set and cleaned tables
The many elves who served breakfast, helped the
photographer, decorated, greeted attendees and
generally contributed holiday cheer
Judy Cadreau for kitchen organization
Everyone who donated bears and gifts for the children
Dan Garcia for the design and construction of Santa’s
sleigh which Dan has lent us for three years
Mary Van Couvering and John Lackie for planning the
event and making it happen
Alexander Scott for donating outdoor Christmas lights and
putting them up in sleet with custodian Jim.

The King and I * Stage to Screen
The Bing Crosby Theater We are sooooooooo lucky. Even though most of us didn’t get
to see this Tony winning Broadway musical at Lincoln
Center, we can see the stage-to-screen version at the Bing
Crosby Theater.
Starring Kelli O'Hara,
who has been called the
"undisputed queen of the
Broadway musical" in the
Sunday Times, and Ken
Watanabe, this production
is a reprise of the 2015
Lincoln Center revival
that won four Tony
awards, including Best
Revival of a Musical,
Best Actress in a Musical,
Best Featured Actress in a
Musical, and Best Costume Design.
Don't miss the unforgettable opportunity to enjoy the
gloriously romantic music of Rogers and Hammerstein in a
revelatory staging of the 1951 classic. Thrill to "Shall we
Dance", "Getting to Know You", "Hello, Young Lovers ",
the poignant "I Have Dreamed" and the optimistic "Whistle a
Happy Tune" as Anna and her King dance into your hearts.
Cost: $18 Mem / $23 Non-mem / Includes ticket, transportation & parking. Time: 1:00 – 6:30 A no-host dinner follows.
“Inspiration usually comes during work rather than before it.” Madeleine L’Engle
Friday, January 4
Gonzaga’s Jundt Art Museum & Lunch Join us for lunch and a visit to Gonzaga’s Jundt Art Museum
to see a special exhibition of Rodin bronzes (sculptor of The
Thinker) before it closes on January 5. The exhibition
includes 25 Rodin bronzes total, including three from the
museum's permanent collection and 22 modeled between
1860 and 1910 from a traveling exhibition organized by the
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.
By the early 20th century, Auguste Rodin was regarded by
many as the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. Rejecting
19th-century academic traditions that dictated what was
“proper” in art, Rodin used sculpture made from hard marble
and bronze to convey the vitality of the human spirit.
The Jundt also has other galleries and displays art from their
permanent collection of almost 5,000 objects. The outdoor
sculpture garden (weather permitting) is also fascinating.
Cost: $10 mem / $15 non-mem. Time: 10:30 am – 3:00 pm.
