RABBI DR. GIDEON M. GOLDENHOLZThe experience of the Exodus was so

rich that its meaning could never becontained in one interpretation. It takesall the generations talking and addingto even approach a complete under-standing of the Exodus.

That's why the Haggada says earlyon: Everyone who adds on to thetelling of the exodus from Egypt deserves praise.

Our people and our faith were bornmore than three thousand years ago, as we prepared to cross theSea of Reeds. Even now, the memory of the narrow escape fromPharaoh's chasing army is dramatic, a reminder that our existenceas Jews can never be taken for granted.

Esther and Mordechai in Persia, Mattathias and Judah Mac-cabee against the Seleucids, and in our own day, the establishmentof the State of Israel and the rescue of Jews from the Soviet Union,Ethiopia, and other lands; at times of danger, Jews have always believed that the Exodus could happen again.

Each of us has a "Pharaoh" force that tries to trap us in place. Each of us needs to find a "Moshe" or a "Miryam" voice inside tohelp us cross the sea, toward a promised land of healing, innerstrength, and reconciliation.

The biblical story has inspired people throughout the Westernworld: the American founders against the British, abolitionismand the civil rights movement after them. People of many cultureshave been inspired by the text in their struggles against dictatorsand poverty.

We never stop needing to talk about the Exodus. Our identityas Jews, as individuals and as world citizens is bound up with thethemes, the characters, and the journey from Egypt toward thePromised Land. In the bustle of Pesach shopping, cleaning, andtravel, find some time to think about the Exodus. Each of usshould try to add questions and insights to enrich the story.

PRESIDENTLarry Marks

I, first, want to say thank you to thenominating committee made up of pastand present leadership for giving methe honor of serving as your presidentfor the next two years. On behalf of thecongregation, I would like to thank ourpast presidents and leadership for thefantastic job guiding our synagoguethrough some difficult times and leav-ing us with a firm foundation uponwhich we can further build a thrivinginstitution.

For those of you who do not know me or whom I haven’t met,my wife and I have been members of Temple Sinai for going onthirteen years and are blessed to have two wonderful daughters,Kayla and Liana. By way of personal background, I was born inMiami and raised in North Miami where I lived until I left to goto college. I was fortunate to have been educated at the HebrewAcademy in Miami Beach and regularly attended Temple BethMoshe in North Miami until I went away to college. I was blessedwith amazing parents and two older brothers which comprised avery strong Jewish oriented family and from which I derive mylove of family and responsibility to serve the community. As pre-teens, my father (a very fine musician in his own right) involved allof us in music performance to the point where he formed us intoa professional group (The Mark III Combo) who performedweekly throughout south Florida, culminating in several USO-type tours of Israel. I continued my musical “career” performingwith the Miami Beach Philharmonic and as principal trumpet inthe Carmen Nappo Youth Symphony.

After high school, I left south Florida to pursue my undergrad-uate degree in Economics at Tulane University and then Dentaland Prosthodontics specialty degrees at Tufts University in Boston. After serving on faculty at Tufts, I moved back “home” to southFlorida to be closer to my family. I have been practicing GeneralDentistry and Prosthodontics in Fort Lauderdale for more thantwenty years and for the past eight years, have had a second officein Hollywood. Presently, I am blessed to count my parents asmembers of Temple Sinai and am thrilled to see them kvell whenKayla, Liana and our niece, Jenna participate and lead services.

As I look at our synagogue from a different perspective now, Irealize how fortunate we really are. We have a beautiful sanctuaryand ballroom in which to pray and socialize. Our professional staff, led by Rabbi Goldenholz is well respected throughout the com-munity and with our newish Executive Director, Harry Silverman, the business side of things will continue to improve. Cheryl, Mar-cie, Dolores and Lisa continue to be a welcoming ray of sunshineto all who enter the office ready to help at a moments notice, andour school leadership of Donna Anton and Karen Kaye, have uspositioned as the envy of synagogues for miles around . I would beremiss if I did not recognize the army of dedicated volunteers, who see to it that people are welcomed, that our minyanim arewell attended and well fed, and our children are well taken care of.

Lastly, I am blessed to have a talented, energetic team of peoplethat make up the new executive board and board of governors withwhom I will work to insure our present while examining new di-rections to take us into the future.

4 Temple Sinai of Hollywood

The past few weeks have been verybusy at Temple Sinai. We had an out-standing Purim weekend. Our Purimnight service featured a costume parade,Megilla reading with music and enter-tainment by Big Shimmie and theShmatters, and all of our staff and layleadership in great costumes. It was re-ally a fun evening.

Sunday morning, Purim day, beganwith the morning minyan and Megillareading followed by our annual congrega-tional meeting and election of officers. I

want to offer my personal thanks to the officers and board memberswho served so faithfully these past two years. I would like to especiallythank Marty Gerber, Bill Passer, Steve Schachter, Barry Greenberger, and Bernie Feldman, whose terms have ended. While they will nolonger be on our board, I’m sure they will continue to be actively in-volved in our temple.

I also want to offer my congratulations to Larry Marks, our newpresident, and all of the members of the executive board and board ofgovernors on their election. I am looking forward to working withthem and I know that under their leadership and guidance, TempleSinai will have a great year!

Our Purim day ended with a great carnival. We had over 500 peo-ple attending for food, games, pony rides, a petting zoo, bungee jump-ing, rock climbing, giant slides, bounce houses and a wonderful circusperformance by the Rainbow Cirque Troupe. It was truly a delight tosee so many people at Temple Sinai having so much fun. While weexceeded our budgeted income for the carnival (which is always nice),more importantly, hundreds of non-members were here at TempleSinai with lots of young children who had a great time. Anything wedo to insure that Temple Sinai is “out front” in the community will begood for us.

In another area, I am participating, along with some of our lay lead-ership, in the federations’ Create a Jewish Legacy program. This pro-gram is designed to help all of the Broward County synagogues andJewish communal organizations work together to develop their ownlegacy programs. We all know that in the long run our Jewish insti-tutions will not be sustained by dues. In order to survive, Temple Sinaihas to grow its Legacy and Endowment funds. One of the most sig-nificant ways to do this is through wills and bequests. The Create aJewish Legacy program is designed to help us create the marketingmaterials for this and to train us on how to grow this important facetof fund raising. You will be hearing more about this as we progress.

Gayle, Noam and Leor join me in wishing all of our members andfriends a Happy and Kosher Pesah.

Harry

What’s happening at the Kasselman School?

Winter Break Mini CampOver our Winter Break, the children

prepared our gardening area for theplanting during Tu B’Shevat. Beforegathering the children together for ourShabbat celebration, we braided andbaked challah to eat that morning, andwe also made one to take home for ourfamilies.

Tu B’Shevat The holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the New Year of the Trees, opened

many doors of learning. Comparing different kinds of leaves, barks, seeds, etc., from trees, gave way to classifying and counting.Creating still life art with trees was fun. And just giving a tree ahug produced the question…“If I were a seed, I’d grown into a____.” Tu B’Shevat is a reminder to us that it is our responsibilityto care for and love our earth.

PurimBe Happy! It’s Adar! Purim is the perfect children’s holiday. At

school, the children were involved in dressing up in costumes, bak-ing hamantaschen, acting out the story of Esther and Mordecaiand drowning out the name of evil Haman. King Ahasuerus(Rabbi) & Queen Esther (Ms. Sabrina) toured the school to showthe children a real Megillah. The children also participated in aPurim Parade and made Shalach Manot baskets for their familyand friends.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWSKaren Kaye, Director

The school year seems to be rushing by aswe approach the celebration of the holiday ofPesach. At Temple Sinai the religious schoolstudents are enjoying participating in the He-brew school programs. They are actively in-volved with their teachers learning Hebrewprayers, all about the holidays, mitzvot, Jewishcustoms, values and symbols. Their enthusiasmand spontaneity is apparent as I walk aroundthe school checking in on the classes.

On Sunday, March 17th, we will experi-ence and learn all about the holiday of Pesach in a unique, hands-onway. We will create a variety of learning centers for the students. Ateach center students will participate in learning a different aspect ofthe observance of Pesach. Plus, there will be some humor along theway as they get to interview the characters in the Passover story.

Our KISS SHABBATS have been truly amazing this year. Thestudents are participating with lots of Shabbat Ruach. We thank allof our parents for coming to these Shabbat services with their chil-dren. On March 1st we will be enjoying our KISS SHABBAT serv-ice in the youth auditorium with the 2nd, 3rd and 5th grade studentsparticipating. Following our service we will all enjoy a kosher vege-tarian pot luck Shabbat dinner.

Our 5th, 6th and 7th grade students meet with Rabbi Golden-holz every Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until noon, working on Hebrewprayers, Torah and Haftorah blessings and trope. Their progress isoutstanding. These students also enjoyed a tzi-tzit workshop. All ofthe students and adults learned everything about a talit and learnedhow to tie tzi-tzit. We all learned the blessing for putting on a talitand then using fabric markers everyone decorated and individual-ized their talit.

As a wonderful mitvah project our students are participating inthe PENNIES FOR CANCER project to help children withleukemia and lymphoma. They have been collecting spare change todonate to the research that will help children with cancer.

It gives me great pleasure to watch your children progress and seetheir confidence grow as they reach their potential. Their enthusiasmis inspiring and contagious. Thank you parents for supporting ourreligious school endeavors .

SINAI YOUTH GROUP HAPPENINGSNeil Oberstein, Youth AdvisorOur last two youth events were a huge success. Our January event

was titled “Diva Dogs”. Man’s best friend came to Temple Sinai for avisit. These dogs (seven in all) were not just dogs, but actors in theirown right. Several of the dogs have done print and TV commercials. One of the dogs even worked on a TV show. These dogs came to ourevent and showed off their talent. The dogs did tricks on command, took directions on cue, and ran through the agility course better thanan Olympic athlete. The best part of the evening was when the kidstook over as the handlers and they led the dogs through the course.

Our February event was called “Poof! Surprise!” Ronald Hoffmanaka: Schmedrick the Clown came to Sinai and gave us an old fash-ioned variety show. The show included a variety of tricks like cuttingand restoring rope; multiplying sponge balls; and disappearing/reap-pearing objects. Schmedrick’s show also included physical comedy, classic circus skills, and slapstick. The kids got in on the act by par-ticipating throughout the show. Where else can you have free pizza, chips, drinks, and a circus show? Only at Temple Sinai.

SHARE-A-MEALOur Share-a-Meal with the hungry this February 13th served plenty of food but we fell short

for the first time in a long time in our ability to give those we served a toiletry bag along with theirlunch to go. I don’t know whether we are not traveling so much or we are just forgetting to bringto the Temple the necessary items so we can put together a standard kit.

Here is what we need from you in miniature: soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand cream, de-odorants, toothpaste, Kleenex packs, pens, razors, small combs, sewing kits, emery boards, wet onesingles, and anything else you can think of that would be of use hygiene wise.

We need a quantity of at least 60-70 of each item to be able to make enough kits. This past datewe were able to put together only 25 kits, thus could not give out.. So bring your items to the of-fice and label it TOILETRIES FOR THE HUNGRY.

Depending upon the weather please bring any clothing such as t-shirts, shorts, socks that youwould like to donate. You can leave this at the Temple or bring to the next meal making in April.

We thank our very caspable and “together” crew: Audrey Branse, Mark and Lois Nonkin, Joanand Paul Lefkowitz, Hilary Smith and her son Forrest, Fred Hochsztein and daughter A.J., Au-drey and Sam Meline and daughter Debbie Meline, (we miss your kids, Deb),Brad and Cori Meltzer with Jonas and Lila; Diane Snyder, Don Levine, StevePlatt, Barbara and Hy Rosen, Judy and Larry Wiener and Sam Monchek.

It was a small but very efficient group who knew the routine well. You certainly do know how to boil eggs—we thank all who brought or

dropped off. Hungry people LOVE eggs! For those of you who have never helped, try us out. We think you will get

hooked and come back.

NEXT SHARE-A-MEALSunday, April 21, 2013 – 11:30 a.m. – School Cafeteria

Please bring a dozen hard boiled eggs in shell, in carton. We need toiletries you have from a trip or have bought at the dollar store.

Pesach Chametz SaleThe Pesach Season is now upon us. I am sure you are busy

making preparations for the holiday. On the festival, it is forbidden for all Jews to own or use

Chametz. You can donate it to a local food bank, throw it away, burn it or sell it. You can assign me to be your agent to sell ourChametz for the duration of the holiday. The Chametz remainsin a sealed cabinet in your home. You cannot use it because itdoes not belong to you. After Pesach is over, it can be used again. This sale of Chametz has been a traditional preparation for Pesach since the turn of the millennium.

To sell Chametz it is traditional to appoint the Rabbi as youragent in the selling. This year, the Hollywood Police Chief, isguaranteeing the safety of our Chametz during the Festival of

Pesach. Just sign the form giving me power of attorney to sell your Chametz. It is customary to enclose a donation with your authorization. All donations should be made to the Rabbi Dr. Gideon Goldenholz Discretionary Fund. I will use the donations for various charities in Broward County, including The PoliceAthletic League, as well as for our own Temple Sinai Family members who may have needs.

There is another mitzvah connected to Pesach which is also important Maot Hittim, "Money for Wheat"or "The Matza Fund" which is collected to provide matza and food to those who are in need in our commu-nity. If you would like to contribute to this important cause, please send a check to Rabbi Dr. Gideon Goldenholz and indicate it is for the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund.

Finally, the last event before Pesach is the burning of Chametz. After the search for leaven (Chametz) on Sun-day night, we will burn the Chametz at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 25, 2013. Anyone bringing Chametzto burn, we will meet on the synagogue grounds by the BBQ area.

Please sign this form and return it by 10:00 a.m. Monday,March 25, 2013. With best wishes for a Kosher, Healthyand Happy Pesach!Sincerely,Rabbi Dr. Gideon Goldenholz

This form must be returned to the Rabbi's Study no later than 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2013

I hereby give my consent and permission to Rabbi Dr. Gideon Goldenholz to act as my agent to sell all the Chametz in my home, business and/or wherever I may reside, for this Passover, in the year 5773.
