CELL BLOCK 7

You asked for them, and your MusicDirector heard you and obeyed. So do yourheel and toe exercises. If you aren’t outthere dancing, you’ll be sitting there tappingyour toes. And do your wrist exercises, asyou will be doing a heap of hand clapping.I checked, and it is okay to clap after thesolos. And believe me when I say that youwill want to applaud these musicians.

Bring your parasol if you have one. Youcan be sure of 1 or 2 parasol parade num-bers. If you are a mouldy fig, (I have no ideawhere that expression came from; some-body google it.) you already know the CB7plays authentic Dixieland Jazz.. But all youreally need to know is that you will enjoythe heck out of their music.

You will leave asking when you canhear them again. (See page 10 for a hint.)

Hello fellowclubbers.

Without the ven-ue tribulations andinconveniences of a large concert hall orthe high cost and cramped quarters char-acteristic of a "night club": we werefeted to the performances of two world-class musicians supported by highlycompetent side men. And all in this cozyand inexpensive room. As a bonus wegot to hear two really accomplished setsof pipes. No minimum, no parking fee and youcertainly cannot complain about the covercharge. Wonderful Sunday afternoon was it not?

You loyal attendees must be tired of hear-ing about low fellow-member attendance. Weare as well. Your board @ the most recentmeeting decided to ad-more, place some addi-tional ads that is. Where? In UOP and DeltaCollege publications. Suggestions to go alongwith the measures under way will be wel-comed, I assure you. And the two ads runningin Sacto and Motown will live or die basedupon their ratings, i.e. do they attract aficiona-dos. Member@Large Kerry Lockwood clever-ly printed up 3 x 81/2 cards, very attractivelydesigned graphically, to which are attachedone-time admittance cards. These will bestacked for pick-up at locations where our adsare running. Kudos and mucho gracias Kerry. The only remaining measure to increase audi-ence would entail a window-less van, a wheel-man and a couple of armed snatch-and-drive-here guys.

Our Editor/Publisher, Billie Ricker will bereceptive to any Donate-tee who would providea good home for her up-right piano. More aboutthat further along in this newsletter. Separately, she might line up a payless gig at her new digsfor any of our musicians who can afford towork for nothing. (If you will indulge my

sarcasm, that iswhat we do anywayconsidering the go-ing rates of com-

pensation.)Your club affairs are in order thanks

to our talented and conscientious arrayof board members. We are on track tosign in April the contract with the Elks, for our 35th year. A reminder: Food anddrink service now is consigned to thepool-side lounge bar. Kindly continue to

patronize that venue, keeping in mind thathome-sourced beverages, (excluding water)and food, are not to be brought on the premis-es. (Recall my comments of last month's re-port.)

In closing I want to share with you a heart-warming anecdote which came to my attentionat our March business meeting. One of ourboard members, who is of Italian descent andfluent in the language, recently returned froma visit to Venice with her daughter, where sheexperienced a minor tooth problem and soughtout a Dentista. On the wall was a listing ofvarious procedures with their respective fees, not uncommon in major tourist destinations. All fees were in Lira, but the fee for oneprocedure, Canale Itinerario, was denominat-ed: $66 US, as well. Our board member, puz-zled by the nomenclature and curious about thesingular dollar equivalency, inquired. The Ital-ian dentist explained that he is an ardent fan ofAmerican jazz and wanted to express his ap-preciation thereof by offering that constantlow fee to any American tourist, regardless ofthe current exchange rate. "But the procedure.I don't recognize it." Responding with an imp-ish grin, "Well we are in Venice after all; andyou MUST be familiar with that great tune byBobby Troupe; ROUTE CANAL 66"! Truestory. Now how gratifying for all Americanos.

We had the usual greatitems provided by Larry Tyrellfrom Trader Joe’s. In addition,Kristy Reed donated herband’s current CD and EllieBuhlert a “very recently” com-pleted boa.

Ellie’s ticket was the first drawn and shetook a bottle of wine, not the boa! BobBreckenridge won a bottle of wine and abottle of beer. Another wine went to HelenLawson and an ale to Judy Griffith.

in educational en-deavors between is-sues of the Delta Rag,I am including a tip I

learned that could prove to be very impor-tant.

You can tell a lot about how a womanfeels by looking at her hands. For instance,if she is holding a gun, she is probablyangry.

Now that’s enough levity. Here is newsthat is not funny at all. Marlena Tygettpulled a muscle in her hip that is so painfulthat the doctor advises her not to walk, oreven drive a car! She is the one who bringssunshine to us all when we are in need of it.She sends those cards from the club to us tobrighten our day, so if you have her ad-dress, why not send her a card.

I am so sorry to say that we have lostanother of our wonderful musicians. DickHungerford passed away March 14 at theage of 92. He was a Charter Member of ourclub, and rarely missed a session if he wasable to be here. He was a popular clarinet-ist, who had a band in the 80’s and latelyled the Geezers Jazz Band. We send ourdeepest sympathy to Pat, who is the onewho kept him smiling for these many years.

Didn’t I tell youMarch is a wonderfulmonth? It was a won-derful March jazz dayfor me, thanks to my jazz friends who keepme busy counting my blessings.

What a treat to see Roberta Conradholding court at her usual table, with thealways cheerful Sallie Warner, and JoyBurch in attendance. If you recall, Rober-ta recently fell and broke a hip. Many folksmuch younger than her 92 years find therehab too difficult and take to their beds. Not so, Roberta! That woman is unstoppa-ble, and much to be admired. Not just forthe grit it took to go through the rehab, butfor the warm smile she still wears. I hearshe is moving to O’Connor Woods. A goodidea, as she was home alone when she fell.

Loren Iversen, said his next project isto form a Uke band. He has a Tahitianukulele that he bought in Tahiti. So if hewill send me to Tahiti, I will buy a ukuleleand learn to play it so I can be in his band. How soon do you think that is going tohappen? I’m not laughing too hard, though. What Loren decides to do may well getdone. He had a huge success with the Tule-burg Jazz Band.

I noticed people engrossed in the oldhistorian books. They are fun to look at.Look for them at the table next to whatWilt Fernandez calls the “Executive” ta-ble. (Because Barbara & Geri sit there, and if the secretary and treasurer need helprunning the club, Frank, the president sitsthere also, whenever they don’t have himchained to the piano.)

In case you think I don’t spend my time

MUSIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT

SharpBY BILL SHARP

Jammers: Thoseare the ones whokeep the floorjumpin’ (as well asthe people on its sur-face). We always owe a debt ofgratitude to those who come to fillin the spaces while the Guest Bandtakes a break. (By the way, “Take abreak” in Bluegrass jargon means“take a solo”. .. . where did theyever come up with that?) The Jam-mers were (not in alphabetical or "level-of-sanity" order): Dick Lockwood, Nancy Kre-is, Ray Farley, Steven Lee, Jan Buhlert,Frank Lindskoog, Bob Edson, Loren Ivers-en, Dannie Balser, Bill Sharp, Mark Kramer,Carl Kaiser, Larry - leave-trombone-behind-Tyrell, Carl Warmdahl, Geri Eckert, DaveRadmore, Gene Mondro, Ed Burhans. Also, extra credit to "Jammer" John Cocuzzi, whostuck around after playing in the guest band,to help out on drums.

Looking back at the guest band forMarch — Whatever they were "not called”(they never came up with an official name),it had absolutely no effect on how well theyperformed. They were Platinum. The Co-cuzzis are a perfect combination, like breadand butter, eggs and ham, just to give acouple of over-used colloquialisms to definehow well they fit together. (What do thevegetarians say in place of “eggs andham?”—tofu and celery?) With Jeff Kreison trumpet, his blazing and melodious tonestore up the place. Many kudos for his greatsolos. His drive reminds me of the trumpet-er from Cornet Chop Suey. The drummer,Ian Stanbaugh, was from Modesto.

In April, we’llhave Cell BlockSeven—for the sec-ond of their 4

scheduled appearanc-es They are known for having theclassic trad sound, hammered outwith a front line of two cornets. Thenthere’s those weird two-belled, thing-a-ma-jiggies they play. The tromboneplayer jumps in and plays one ofthem, making it a trio of – of —-well,

just be there to hear the unique sound theyproduce. That sound is one of their “callingcards,” which uniquely defines CB7. Theyhave six other “calling cards,” all musical,(for a total of 7) that they use throughout theafternoon’s entertainment. Make sure to askBob Romans, the leader, just how long theband has been together… it may have some-thing to do with “when Rome was built,"and how Bob got his name.

Friends, “Romans,” and countrymen, keep your parts healthy, especially yourears, to come and listen to the guest band onSunday, April 6th .

Support” but action isneeded right now.You can do some-

thing to help!1. Be sure you attend the Month-ly Sessions.2. Bring a friend, a relative or aneighbor (or two) with you.3. Place a little “Add” in youroutgoing e mails. You can typeit once and then save it for cut

and paste. I suggest something similarto:“I am a member of the Stockton DixielandJazz Society. We meet on the first Sundayafternoon of every month to listen anddance to a live band playing music fromour great American historical past. I amtelling you this because I think you wouldenjoy our sessions. First time people get infree; no door or cover charge. The easiest way to find something lostaround the house is to buy a replacement.

It occurred to melately that nothinghas occurred to melately. Hmmm???

I look forward to seeing youand your friends at our April 2014SJDJS Session. Our March SJDJSSession went very well. The guestband, starring Kristy (Reed) Co-cuzzi and her husband John wasoutstanding. Their music was greatand the dancers and listeners really enjoyedthemselves. As the day came to a close, wefound we would be without a drummer forthe last set. John Cocuzzi graciously agreedto provide his services. What a treat for allof us who played that set with him! Theman is a “Monster” with the sticks. ThankYou John!

The down side to the day? As in recentmonths, the “Soldiers” outnumbered the“Civilians.” (Definition: “Soldiers” – AKAMusicians. “Civilians” – AKA Non-musi-cian audience.) Our kind of music (OKOM)is a big part of American history. While weare doing well in creating and encouragingyoung musicians to play “OKOM,” we arenot doing nearly as well in recruiting newaudiences. Our numbers are visibly shrink-ing. Our Stockton Society is not alone inthis dilemma. We see similar attendanceissues at the Jazz Societies in Modesto andSacramento as well.

The average age of our membership isincreasing. It is imperative that we recruitnew members. We are not yet on “Life
