A New Holiday TraditionWe all have our holiday music traditions, and they come in every form— popular, classical, jazz, gospel—so this year WGBH is celebrating them in one spectacular television holiday concert, with a very special guest.
’Tis the Night with Ben Folds & Friends (page 10) is a multi-genre and multi-generational celebration led by the versatile singer-songwriter Ben Folds. You may know him as the front man for the alternative rock band Ben Folds Five or as a judge on The Sing Off, but he is also a composer, artistic
adviser to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center and a cham-pion of arts education. Not to mention an avid supporter of public media.
“ I’m thrilled to be work-ing with WGBH and all of the artists,” Ben says. “Public media plays a necessary role
in our society, inspiring and entertaining while at the same time fostering many of the important conversations we need to be having.”
Ben serves as host and featured performer for exciting riffs on holiday favorites, recorded in our WGBH Studios in Brighton. His impressive credentials combined with his audience appeal set the stage for a one-of-a-kind holiday experience. “Ben’s versatility has allowed us to open up the holiday playlist,” says WGBH General Manager for Television Liz Cheng. “With the Handel and Haydn Society performing music from Messiah and tap-dancing sensation Caleb Teicher channeling holiday films of old, the performances will be both familiar and thrilling.”
The show includes a duet with Ben and the dynamic H+H violinist Aisslinn Nosky (on cover). The Boston Children’s Chorus, the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum and singers from the New England Conservatory will also be there to join in the festivities. Inspired by a Facebook Live sing-along with the Handel and Haydn Society organized by our classical music station WCRB, this annual concert has become a holiday tradition and a showcase for the diversity of the Boston music scene.
“Holiday music knows no boundaries, and that allows us to bring differ-ent styles and genres together in a beautifully harmonic mosaic,” says WCRB Station Manager Anthony Rudel. “Just the notion of the more than two- centuries-old Handel and Haydn Society performing alongside an artist with the musicianship of Ben Folds is extraordinarily exciting. This show redefines how music can celebrate and elevate.”
It’s this kind of original production, sharing and celebrating cultural traditions and showcasing the vibrant music, dance and voices of local and national performers, that you’ll find only on public media. We’re grateful for your support to make this possible.
Wishing you a happy holiday season and a peaceful new year.

See how these modern-day pilgrims triumph over their doubts and fears while they attempt to walk across an entire country.Walking the Camino: Six Ways to SantiagoTue, 12/18 at 9pm

On to the Holy LandRetrace Mark Twain’s footsteps as a cub reporter on a bold adventure sailing around the Mediterranean and throughout Europe in 1867, with Jerusalem and the Holy Land as his ultimate destinations. Narrated by Martin Sheen, this documentary reveals Twain’s deep rooted and complex relation-ship with religion. See how his exploits on this landmark journey establish Twain as the voice of America—funny, sarcastic and powerfully opinionated.Mark Twain’s Journey to Jerusalem: DreamlandFri, 12/28 at 9pm

WGBH Hosts Series of Debates to Keep Massachusetts Voters Informed Throughout the 2018 election season, WGBH News hosted a series of success-ful and widely watched debates, giving voters across the state the chance to get to know the candidates and the issues on their November ballots.
Starting in August, the team at WGBH News hosted longtime incumbent Bill Galvin and challenger Josh Zakim in a Democratic primary debate for the office of Massachusetts secretary of state. That same week, US Rep. Michael Capuano and Boston City Councilor-at-Large Ayanna Pressley, vying for Capuano’s seat representing the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District, went head to head on Greater Boston in a Democratic primary debate. Pressley went on to win the primary, setting herself on the path to become the first black woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress. The week con-cluded with a Democratic gubernatorial debate on Greater Boston between primary candidates Robert Massie and Jay Gonzalez (right), who advanced to challenge Gov. Charlie Baker (left) in the statewide election.
In October, WGBH News aired a special debate, hosted by Boston Public Radio’s Jim Braude and Margery Eagan, between Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey and Republican challenger Jay McMahon, marking the candi-dates’ first-ever meeting. Days later, Greater Boston chalked
up another first when Democratic incumbent Deborah Goldberg met Republican State Rep. Keiko Orrall for the first time in a televised debate for the office of state treasurer.

The governor’s race rose to a fever pitch in mid-October when Baker and Gonzalez faced off in an hourlong televised debate, hosted by Braude and Eagan, which streamed live on WGBH 2, WGBY in Springfield, 89.7 WGBH Radio and on the WGBH News website. The two sparred over a number of issues, including the recent Massachusetts State Police scandals, the opioid crisis, public transportation and their stances on GOP candidate Geoff Diehl, who was running against US Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Leading up to Election Day, WGBH News wrapped up its slate of candi-date showdowns, the first between Galvin and Republican challenger Anthony Amore in the only secretary of state debate. WGBH News also host-ed a debate between incumbent Karyn Polito and Quentin Palfrey, a former adviser to President Obama, in the race for lieutenant governor.
“In today’s environment, public media remains a trusted source of news and information,” said Phil Redo, general manager for WGBH News. “We are committed to continuing to offer a forum for civil civic discussion.”
Eric in the EveningSpirit and SoulJazz legend Duke Ellington composed thousands of musical scores during his career, but he considered his Three Sacred Concerts among his most important work. The concerts —recorded in 1965, 1968 and1973—were performed in houses of worship and included a tap dancer, guest vocalists and several choirs. Host Eric Jackson dedicates an entire show to Ellington’s spiritual compositions, guaranteed to strike the right chord for the holidays.Sun, 12/23 at 9pm

Longtime supporters of WCAI proba-bly have one of the handmade mugs that are among the most popular gifts during every pledge drive. Each mug is a unique work of art. But where do they come from?
Cape artist Tessa Morgan personally creates each mug in her studio, one at a time. She learned her pottery skills as a teenager when her parents arranged for an experi-enced potter down the street to take
her on as a student. “She stayed at my side as I practiced centering and pull-ing up the clay, patiently commenting as I worked,” Morgan said.
During the last two years of high school, Morgan spent all her free time working on her pottery at an arts center near her school. By the end of her senior year, she was selling her work to parents of friends through word of mouth. Morgan majored in ceramics at Connecticut College. In 1993, she received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art as an illustration major.
Wanting to pursue her love of storytelling with pictures, Morgan had an idea to take her pottery to another creative level. “I had always loved to draw, and carving designs into pots was second nature to me,” she said. So she wrapped the graphic look of a woodblock print around everyday objects, creating her own signature style.
When WCAI approached Morgan in 2004 about making mugs for the station, she said she wasn’t sure she was up to the task, worrying that the mugs would not match. “Little did I know that making mugs for WCAI would improve my skills as a potter and the quality of my work exponentially.” Now Morgan creates a new WCAI mug design every two years, changing both the shape and the color.
A member of the Society of Cape Cod Craftsmen and Cape Cod Potters, Morgan has been a featured artist in Yankee magazine and other publica-tions. Her work has been included in numerous shows at The Cape Museum of Art, and her projects include a large tile installation at the Falmouth Public Library.
Still, some of her favorite pieces of art are the mugs she creates for WCAI listeners. “My collaboration with WCAI has been incredibly rewarding for me and hopefully for them as well.”
