Doc Is BackWe’re returning to the seaside village of Portwenn this month, and we know those are welcome words to the legion of Doc Martin fans. dr. martin ellingham and his brusque bedside manner have been causing trouble for six tumultuous seasons—and gaining such a dedicated following that our programming team of ron Bachman and maria Bruno ruiz made a reliable home for the comedy-drama series on WGBX 44.

“Doc Martin (page 15) is one of those rare series that inspires incredible passion,” says ron, WGBH’s senior director of program-ming. “Our viewers are drawn to Martin Clunes’s performance as the lovable curmudgeon, the warm and talented supporting cast and the beautiful setting (Port isaac, Cornwall, in real life).”

At the beginning of Season 7, martin’s marriage to Louisa hangs in the balance. While you’ll have to tune in to see if he can win his family back, i’m excited to resolve another Doc-related cliffhanger: an eighth and final season of the beloved series is coming in 2018.

“the strong response to Doc Martin paved the way for us to expand our drama offerings on WGBX 44,” says maria, WGBH’s director of programming. “We’ve added series such as Shetland (returning in April), Midsomer Murders and this month The Doctor Blake Mysteries (page 14).” Look for dr. Lucian Blake, a crime-solving World War ii veteran, in a new season that begins right before Doc Martin on march 23.

the doctors are in, and so too is the vicar. reverend sidney Chambers (James norton) and inspector Geordie Keating (robson Green) are back for a new season as the improbable crime-fighting duo at the center of Grantchester on Masterpiece Mystery! (page 16). The Wall Street Journal says this “glorious” mystery series set in the 1950s offers “respite from the world around us now even as it reveals how little ever changes about the human heart.”

enjoy these compelling dramas along with our diverse lineup of award-winning news, public affairs, history, science and children’s programs. it’s no mystery…your generous annual support makes them all possible.

Harry’s Fallthe fourth and final season of Mr. Selfridge opens in 1928. Harry selfridge, played by Jeremy Piven, is at the pinnacle of his power and public celebrity—a retail giant at the heart of the roaring twenties in London. But his turbulent, troubled life puts the empire and social status he worked so hard to create in peril. Katherine Kelly returns as the alluring

socialite, Lady mae. “everything we’ve seen and been working towards on this journey is coming through in this season and coming to a close,” Piven says. “What makes British drama the best is that it doesn’t burn, it steps, it takes its time telling the story, plays with pace and has fun with it.”Masterpiece/Mr. Selfridge, Season 4Sun, 3/27 at 10pm on WGBH 2

Breaking Barriers On August 18, 1929, 20 brave women set out to fly for nine consecutive days across the United states in the First Women’s national Air derby. there was the media darling, the Hollywood starlet, the aviatrix record breakers and the unforgettable foul-mouthed wife of a preacher. together they were flying in the face of anyone who believed women belonged on the ground, and this documentary tells their story, capturing the essence of this dramatic race and showing the impact these pilots had on women, aviation and the country.Breaking Through the Clouds: The First Women’s International Air DerbyFri, 3/4 at 8:30pm

Run and LeadWomen make up over 50 percent of the population and workforce, over 50 percent of college graduates and they have more earning power than men their age before they reach their 30th birthday. Yet most women do not want to run for office and often say they are underqualified to run and serve. the documentary Raising Ms. President looks at why women don’t run, where political ambition starts and provides reasons parents, teachers and voters should support women in leadership roles. Raising Ms. PresidentMon, 3/14 at 8pm

WGBH News Rolls Out New WebsiteWGBH News recently launched its all-new, responsive website: wgbhnews.org. It’s easy to read and navigate on your computer, tablet or smartphone.

“The new platform for wgbhnews.org allows us to showcase three very different mediums simultaneously: radio, television and classic online ‘print,’” says Peter Kadzis, senior editor of

Radio and News for Local Productions. “Producers Chiquita Pascal and Brendan Lynch worked tirelessly for months with developers on the site’s design and functionality. The result: a leap forward for our integrated newsroom and a richer online experience for our audience.” Check it out!

89.7 WGBH’s State House StudioBuilding on its commitment to comprehensive local reporting and substan-tive politics coverage, WGBH News will soon unveil a new, four-mic radio studio at the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill. The studio will be used to cover state government directly from the source, bringing listeners a look at the process, the people and the impact their decisions are having on communities throughout the Commonwealth.

“WGBH is committed to local coverage and deeper reporting of state government and public policy,” General Manager for Radio Phil Redo says. “Our State House reporter, Mike Deehan, has been doing a great job since

Eric in the Evening The InnovatorWhen he died in 2015, The New York Times said saxophonist Ornette Coleman “rewrote the language of jazz,” and described him as “one of the most powerful and con-tentious innovators” in the history of the art form. Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Coleman was inspired early on by Charlie Parker. He produced his first studio recording in 1958 and a year later, he had caught the attention of every important musician in the jazz world. He eventually learned to play the trumpet and violin as his career progressed. Host Eric Jackson features his music on tonight’s program. Sun, 3/13 at 9pm

he joined WGBH News last summer—and now he’ll have the added advantage of better equipment, better acoustics and faster connectivity to our main newsroom. The construction of this new studio has always been in our plans, and we’re very excited about the ways it will enhance our coverage.”

The room in which the new studio is housed, “Rm 51”, is dedicated to a longtime State House

radio reporter, the late Kevin McNicholas, and will be made available to any media outlet requiring space.

You can hear Deehan’s reporting on 89.7’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and read it online at wgbhnews.org. In addition to being one of only seven Massachusetts media outlets with a full-time State House reporter, WGBH News also produces a weekly politics podcast, The Scrum, featuring Kadzis, Adam Reilly and David Bernstein. Find it on iTunes.

Joyous Celebrations By Anthony rudel 99.5 WCrB station manager

new light on this monumental music. And for some of the day, WCrB’s Brian mcCreath—host of The Bach Hour (sundays, 6am and 12mid-night)—will be there greeting listeners and introducing some of the performances.

meanwhile, at both the Cartoon Festival and Bach Birthday Celebration, WCrB will lead a new social media initiative designed to widen the audience for classical music and engage people in a fun, interesting way. details are still being worked out, but stay tuned—or rather, stay connected—for more

information about this new project from WCrB by following us on twitter and Facebook: @995wcrb; facebook.com/995wcrb.

But there’s more…since Bach’s actual birthday is monday, march 21, our weekend-long celebration will be highlighted by a Sunday Night Special performance of Bach’s rarely heard, but amazingly beautiful St. John Passion. this performance, recorded exclusively by WCrB, features one of our area’s fine ensembles, Boston Baroque, led by one of this city’s most compelling musical minds, martin Pearlman. this special Palm sunday broadcast, hosted by Brian mcCreath, starts at 7pm and will be followed by another rare work, C.P.e. Bach’s St. Markus Passion in a recording led by Helmuth rilling.

march is like every other month: lots to listen to and lots to do. But, whatever you do, keep classical music close, and keep 99.5 WCrB—Classical radio Boston, closer!

Welcome to march—another month of exceptional music from Boston’s only 24/7 classical radio station!

We begin by turning our attention to two events that make Boston the musical hub that it is and make WCrB your connection to the can’t miss performances happening in the city.

On saturday, march 19, WCrB will welcome more than 3,000 people—and we want you to be among them—to symphony Hall for our annual kid-friendly music extravaganza known as the Classical Cartoon Festival. now in its 17th year, this beloved event (10am to 4pm) is joyous fun. not only can you enjoy Warner Brothers cartoons, which incorporate classical music so brilliantly, on a giant screen, but you also can experience performances by music groups from all over our area, featuring musicians of all ages.

WCrB’s Cartoonfest is the perfect way to introduce that little special someone to the world of classical music. the event is inviting, casual

and most of all, fun. so bring friends, bring your children or grandchildren, bring anyone who you think would love classical music and a great time.

On the same day, the First Lutheran Church in the Back Bay will be mounting its day-long Boston Bach Birthday Celebration. it’s a wonderful way to explore the many facets of J.S. Bach’s vast creative output in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. there are performances and conversations that shed

“vern’s enthusiasm was contagious,” she says. “i have heard from many listeners who would tell me ‘i love listening to vern! i don’t know anything about birds, and had never thought that i really cared to learn more, but vern is so entertaining and knowledgeable you get drawn in.’”

We’ll celebrate some of the magical moments vern brought to WCAi’s airwaves by listening to archival tape and talking with those who knew him best. We’ll speak with people like Peter trimble, one of vern’s best friends and an ornithologist for the mass military reservation, who birded with vern for more than 30 years.

“He was one of the best field birders that i’ve ever been out with,” trimble said. “He had eyes that could pick up anything in the distant sky— just a fabulous birder. But he knew so much about birds on the scholarly level as well. He was just a real treasure, and of course he was so happy to introduce people to birds, to lead tours and bird walks.”

We invite listeners to join us for our celebration of vern’s life on march 17, at 9am. Listeners also can call our Listener Line in advance of the show to share an anecdote or comment: 508-548-9600 Ext. 4.

Honoring VernBy sean Corcoran, managing editor of news

On march 17, we take an hour on our daily talk show, The Point, to celebrate the life of long-time WCAi contributor Vernon Laux, on what would have been his 61st birthday.

vern passed away in January from complications related to esophageal cancer. His booming laugh, outsized enthusiasm and the unabashed joy he took in life and in birding touched everyone who knew or heard him.

vern had one of the most recognizable voices

on our airwaves. On his weekly bird reports, he passionately told listeners what was happening in the birding world. And his monthly Bird News program on The Point with host mindy todd was one of the station’s most popular programs, todd says.
