In the early 1920s, the school was housed in the proud
brick structure of Old Main and the institution’s name
was changed to Mankato State Teachers College,
where two- and three-year degrees were awarded for
teaching elementary and junior high school. As the
years progressed, so too did the range of programs
and the caliber of instruction. Enrollment increased. The
College realized the need to expand.
In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, this meant a campus
on both ends of a hill – the original site at the base
and new facilities on an upper campus. The College
became a university in 1975, with more than 12,000
students enrolled.
The Mankato Normal School opened its doors in 1868, just a few
years after Mankato itself was founded.

First a normal school. Then a teacher’s college.
Then a state college and a university. And now,
beginning in fall 2007, an institution that grants
doctorate degrees. It’s the next step in Minnesota
State Mankato’s unending push to deliver
education beyond what students expect – the kind
of learning that transforms students’ lives, allows
them to realize dreams and makes them a force in
changing our world for the better.
Four years later, the shift from lower to upper campus was complete and the
entire University was housed on the rolling hilltop where it is today – overlooking
the Minnesota River Valley and serving as the educational home to 14,000
students, 1,400 faculty and staff and nearly 100,000 alumni through classes
on campus, in satellite locations throughout southern Minnesota and the Twin
Cities metropolitan area, and online.
