    OMCscustomisedDUKCsystemsareoperationalinsomeofthelargestbulk,containerandmulti-cargoportsintheworld,includingthePilbaraironoreportsinnorthWesternAustralia(beneficiariesincludeBHPBilliton,RioTintoandFortescueMetalsGroup)andinsomeoftheworldsmostimportantwaterways,includingTorresStraitandCanadasStLawrenceRiverfromMontrealtoQuebecCity.

    DUKCinnovatorDrOBrienpioneeredhisfirstsystemduringsixyearsofdevelopmentandtestingbeforeitbecameoperationalatthecoalexportportofHayPoint,QueenslandinMarch1993.ItwasthefirstdynamicUKCsystemimplementedanywhereintheworldandmonitoredtheUKCuntil12hourspriortotheshipsdeparturefromtheberth.Itdeliveredeconomicbenefitsofmorethan30cmextradraftcomparedtotheexistingStaticUKCruleformostsailings.Duringthefollowingyearsoffurtherincrementalsystemrefinements,theincreasedmaximumdraftallowedmorecargotobeloadedinfavourableswellandtideconditions.

    Inmanycases,DUKCenableslargeshipstosailupto1mdeeperthanpermittedbytraditionalandnecessarilyconservativeStaticrules,andnotonlytoloadmorecargosafelybutalsotosailwithwidertidalwindows,DrOBriensaid.TheconceptofsailingwithlesswaterunderthekeelwasandstillisaconcernforsomeRegulatorsbutDUKCisalwayssaferthanStaticUKCrulesbecauseOMCsreal-timetechnologyconsidersallthedynamicvariables-aswellasshipsize-intheUKCdecisionmaking.

    SailingincreasinglylargershipsclosertotheseabeddemandsimpeccableattentiontodetailandDrOBrienstressedthatOMCsextensiveexperienceinscreeningallinputdatainawidevarietyofportsettingsandenvironmentsaroundtheworldprovidescertaintyinthisfirststepincustomisingasystemforanewportorwaterway.HesaidOMChasimplementedametoceanprocessingandQualityAssuranceframeworkbasedontheinternationalguidelinesQualityAssuranceofRealTimeOceanographicData.

    additiontotodaysupgradeatHayPoint(fittinglythefirstDUKCport)andlastweekscommissioningofanupgradeforGeraldton,Series5hasbeenrolledouttoRioTintosCapeLambertandDampierportslastyear;toNapier,Newcastle,ArriumSpencerGulf,WhyallaandGeelongin2015,FremantleandMontreal-StLawrenceRiverin2014,PortHedlandin2013andTorresStrait(AMSA)in2011.Theweb-basedSeries5SystemusesAIStoprovidecontinuousreal-timemonitoringofUKCbetweenberthandfairway.Ittakesintoaccountallthedynamicvariables,suchastides,wavesandcurrents,affectingthenetamountofwaterunderthekeelateachpointonthetransitandmostimportantlyallowsspeedchangesthroughoutthetransittominimisesquat.OMCprovidescriticalmonitoringandsupportofitsDUKCshipsonthewater24/7,365daysayear.

    EfficiencygainsforusersofDUKCSeries5

    WhilemaintainingsafetyisalwaysOMCsfirstconcern,therecentadvancesinitsSeries5systemshavecontributedtosignificanteconomicgainsforitsusers.Forexample,DPCM(DynamicPortCapacityModel)isanoptionalstand-aloneextracapabilitytoDUKCSeries5andhelpsmaximiseportthroughputandchannelcapacity.TheDPCMhasbeenappliedatPortHedlandtheworldslargestbulkexportportandhelpedincreasemodelledportthroughputbyabout80mtpaforaminimalinvestment.Alsorecently,inajointeffortwithPilbaraPortsAuthority(PPA),OMCsSeries5systemrecentlyhelpedenablethelargesteverironoreshipment270,006tonnesontheFortescueMetalsGrouploadedshipHLTUBARAO-toleavePortHedlandatarecordsailingdraftof19.95metres.

    OMCcontinuestoworkcloselywithPPAtooptimiseclearancedepthsandmakethemostofthehighestpartofthetidetosendoutasmanyofthebiggerironorecarriersaspossible,DrOBriensaid.Oneofourmostsignificantjointachievementswasin2015whenarecordeightshipssailedforthefirsttimeontheonetideunderDUKCadvicefromPortHedland,whichhasalargetidalrangeandlongtransittime.Meanwhile,atthesmallerregionalbulkportofGeelong,theVictorianRegionalChannelsAuthorityadoptedDUKCin2015asawayofadmittinglargershipswithmorecargo,withoutrequiringanychangestothechannelinfrastructure.Intherightcircumstances,shipsmaybeallowedupto12metresdraftandthatmeansacargoupliftof1350to3000tonnespership.Foroneoftheportsshippers,VivaEnergy,eachextra10cminshipdraftresultsinasavingofabout$1millionayear.InFebruary,DUKCtechnologyplayedakeyroleinhelpinganothershipperGrainCorpsetnewtonnagerecordsforitsGeelongoperations,thusimprovingtheglobalcompetivenessofVictoriangrains.UnderDUKCadvicetheNordPolluxsailedwithmorethan61,900tonnes(biggestsingleshipmentofcanolafullyloadedinGeelong),theTomahawkdepartedcarryingalmost61,800tonnes(biggestsingleshipmentofwheatfullyloadedinGeelong)andtheTwinkleIslandsailedwithabout62,500tonnesofbarley(largestshipmentofthegrainfullyloadedinGeelong).

  • GreaterawarenessofDUKCasariskmitigationtoolWhilerecognisingthehugeeconomicbenefitsofDUKCtechnology,DrOBriensaidmanyportsandsafetyauthoritieswereincreasinglyseeingthehugesafetyadvantagesofinstallingcustomisedsystemsasariskmitigationtool.ThiscapabilitywasthemainreasonwhyPortofMelbourneCorporation(PoMC)implementedourtechnologyafteralongthoroughprocessofindependentvalidationandtrialling,hesaid.ThisproofofthecapabilityofourtechnologytoaccuratelymanagetheUKCoflargeshipstransitingthesometimestreacherousentrancetoPortPhillipBay,oneoftheworldsmostchallengingwatersforshipnavigation,increasedawarenessofitsafetyadvantage.WhatmustberememberedherewithOMCsfocusontheverticaldimensionofUKCisthat,whileitisachallengetomodeltheshipasittransitsthewaterwayinreal-time,ithasthepotentialtoofferoftensignificanteconomicandenvironmentalbenefitswhilemitigatingtheriskofagrounding.GreaterawarenessofDUKCasaconjunctivedredgingdesigntoolDrOBriensaidOMCstechnologyalsominimisesdredgingbyliterallytakingshipsdeeperonacomputerscreen.Overtheyears,DUKCsmethodologyhasbeensuccessfullyusedtodesigntheverticaldimensionsofanewchannel,ortodeepenanexistingchannel,soastominimisechanneldredgingquantitiesandassociatedenvironmentaleffects.WhenaDUKCsystemisalreadyinstalledinaport,DUKCcanincreaseportcapacitywithlesscapitaldredgingbecausethissoftwarecanbeusedconjunctivelywithdredgingtocreatethechanneldepthprofilewhichmatchestheUKCrequirementsthroughoutthetransitsothattheamountofmaterialdredgedismatchedtothedepthsrequiredfortheshipstransiting.WhileitistruethatthemostoptimaldredgingdesignispossibleonlywhenaDUKCoperationalsystemhasbeeninstalled,thiscostisvalueaddingandisamortisedintothesavingsindredgingcostsandintooperationalefficiencygains,hesaid.InthePortofTaranaki,NewZealand,OMCreducedtheportsplanneddredgingcostsbyapproximately50%throughtheintroductionofDUKC.Overtheyears,OMChaswondredgingoptimisationstudiesforanumberofportsincludingDarwin,AnketellPoint,CapeLambert,OakajeeandPortHedland.DrOBriensaidOMCdoesongoingworkwithPPAandRioTintoontargetingthedredgingrequiredtooptimiseproductivity.

    HesaidthatakeypartofOMCsmaintenanceandsupportismanagingtheportsbathymetricdataandsiltationissuesandweareworkingregularlywithanumberofourclients,particularlyafterstormsorcyclones,onmanagingchangingbathymetry.ItisastandardapproachofOMCtoprovidesupportservicestoanalyseandupdatewithindaysthebathymetrydatausedbytheDUKCsystemasnewsurveysbecomeavailablethusprovidingquick-turnaroundemergencybathymetricupdates.

    R&Dinitiatives

    DrOBriensaidOMCsR&DDepartmentcontinuestodevelopnewproductsandsolutionsinresponsetouserneed.TheseincludeOMCiHeavewhichmeasuresshipmotionsinextremeweatherconditions.PortsincludingBrisbane,Melbourne,Geraldton,Portland,SanFranciscoandHalifaxhaveusedOMCiHeaveforhighlyaccuraterecordingsofreal-timeshipmotionsinlargeswellswheretraditionalmethodsofmeasuringwaveresponsesbyplacingaDGPSunitonthebowaretooriskyduetotheheavyseas.HavingagooddatabaseofmeasuredwaveresponsemotionsclarifieswhetherornotaUKCproblemexists,DrOBriensaid.Thesecanalsobeusedbyportsforvalidationneedssuchas,forexample,theintroductionoflargecontainerships.

    AsOMCcelebratesits30thanniversarythismonth,itcontinuestoplayitsleadingroleasthedeveloperandoperatorofreal-timeUKCsystems.Inrecognitionofitsinternationalstanding,OMChasbeeninvitedtoparticipateastheExpertContributortonewdevelopmentsinUKCmanagementinformationexchangefore-navigation.OMCisprovidingitstechnologytoleadthecurrentIHOs-100UnderKeelClearanceManagementInformationProjectTeam(UKCMPT)whosebriefistodevelopanIHOS-129basedproductspecificationforUKCMinformationtoenabletheoutputsofUKCMservicestobedisplayedforusers(IHO,2015).ThisProjectTeamcomprisesanumberofIHOMemberStatesincludingSweden,France,Korea,USA,Russia,Finland,UKandTheNetherlandsandischairedbyarepresentativefromtheAustralianMaritimeSafetyAuthority(AMSA)
