AustralianmaritimeengineeringcompanyOMCInternational(OMC),therecognisedworldleaderinreal-timeUnderKeelClearanceManagement(UKCM),iscelebratingitsmilestone30thanniversarywithamovetolargerMelbourneheadquarters.</p><p>FounderandExecutiveDirectorDrTerryOBrienAMsaidOMChasmovedfromHarperSttonearby126TrenerryCrescent,Abbotsfordtohouseitsgrowingworkforceofmorethan50employees,aswellastoallowforpostgraduatestudentsandshortstaycollaborativevisitswithglobalmaritimepartners.Wearehiringmorestafftomeetagrowingdomesticandinternationalworkload,aresponsetoanincreasingrecognitionofourDUKCe-Navtechnologyastheindustrystandardforsafeandefficientreal-timemanagementofUKC,hesaid.</p><p>OMCscustomisedDUKCsystemsareoperationalinsomeofthelargestbulk,containerandmulti-cargoportsintheworld,includingthePilbaraironoreportsinnorthWesternAustralia(beneficiariesincludeBHPBilliton,RioTintoandFortescueMetalsGroup)andinsomeoftheworldsmostimportantwaterways,includingTorresStraitandCanadasStLawrenceRiverfromMontrealtoQuebecCity.</p><p>DUKCinnovatorDrOBrienpioneeredhisfirstsystemduringsixyearsofdevelopmentandtestingbeforeitbecameoperationalatthecoalexportportofHayPoint,QueenslandinMarch1993.ItwasthefirstdynamicUKCsystemimplementedanywhereintheworldandmonitoredtheUKCuntil12hourspriortotheshipsdeparturefromtheberth.Itdeliveredeconomicbenefitsofmorethan30cmextradraftcomparedtotheexistingStaticUKCruleformostsailings.Duringthefollowingyearsoffurtherincrementalsystemrefinements,theincreasedmaximumdraftallowedmorecargotobeloadedinfavourableswellandtideconditions.</p><p>Inmanycases,DUKCenableslargeshipstosailupto1mdeeperthanpermittedbytraditionalandnecessarilyconservativeStaticrules,andnotonlytoloadmorecargosafelybutalsotosailwithwidertidalwindows,DrOBriensaid.TheconceptofsailingwithlesswaterunderthekeelwasandstillisaconcernforsomeRegulatorsbutDUKCisalwayssaferthanStaticUKCrulesbecauseOMCsreal-timetechnologyconsidersallthedynamicvariables-aswellasshipsize-intheUKCdecisionmaking.</p><p>SailingincreasinglylargershipsclosertotheseabeddemandsimpeccableattentiontodetailandDrOBrienstressedthatOMCsextensiveexperienceinscreeningallinputdatainawidevarietyofportsettingsandenvironmentsaroundtheworldprovidescertaintyinthisfirststepincustomisingasystemforanewportorwaterway.HesaidOMChasimplementedametoceanprocessingandQualityAssuranceframeworkbasedontheinternationalguidelinesQualityAssuranceofRealTimeOceanographicData.</p><p>OMCsDUKCoffersareliableandcomprehensivesolutionformaintainingasafeUKCwhilesailingthroughdepthrestrictedchannels,whichisfullyvalidatedbyitsuniquetrackrecordofsafesailing-over24years-withnotouchbottomincident.ThisAustraliantechnology,developedinhouse,hascontributed</p><p>MEDIA </p></li><li><p>significantlytothesafetyandefficiencyofshippingbulkandcontainercargo,earnedthousandsofexportdollarswhileremainingunmatchedbyanyotheremergingcompetitor.</p><p>NoothermaritimeorganisationofferssuchaspecificfocusontheverticaldimensionofUKCmanagement.UnderthecontinuedleadershipofDrOBrienandhissonPeter,whomanagesthecompanysday-to-dayoperationsasCEO,theOMCteamcontinuestodevelopandsupportnewfunctionalitiesforDUKCtechnologywhichisoperationalin22portsandwaterwaysaroundtheworld.Thelatestreleaseisweb-</p><p>basedDUKCSeries5whichisnowoperationalin11oftheseportsandwaterways.DrOBriensaidthatin</p><p>additiontotodaysupgradeatHayPoint(fittinglythefirstDUKCport)andlastweekscommissioningofanupgradeforGeraldton,Series5hasbeenrolledouttoRioTintosCapeLambertandDampierportslastyear;toNapier,Newcastle,ArriumSpencerGulf,WhyallaandGeelongin2015,FremantleandMontreal-StLawrenceRiverin2014,PortHedlandin2013andTorresStrait(AMSA)in2011.Theweb-basedSeries5SystemusesAIStoprovidecontinuousreal-timemonitoringofUKCbetweenberthandfairway.Ittakesintoaccountallthedynamicvariables,suchastides,wavesandcurrents,affectingthenetamountofwaterunderthekeelateachpointonthetransitandmostimportantlyallowsspeedchangesthroughoutthetransittominimisesquat.OMCprovidescriticalmonitoringandsupportofitsDUKCshipsonthewater24/7,365daysayear.</p><p>EfficiencygainsforusersofDUKCSeries5</p><p>WhilemaintainingsafetyisalwaysOMCsfirstconcern,therecentadvancesinitsSeries5systemshavecontributedtosignificanteconomicgainsforitsusers.Forexample,DPCM(DynamicPortCapacityModel)isanoptionalstand-aloneextracapabilitytoDUKCSeries5andhelpsmaximiseportthroughputandchannelcapacity.TheDPCMhasbeenappliedatPortHedlandtheworldslargestbulkexportportandhelpedincreasemodelledportthroughputbyabout80mtpaforaminimalinvestment.Alsorecently,inajointeffortwithPilbaraPortsAuthority(PPA),OMCsSeries5systemrecentlyhelpedenablethelargesteverironoreshipment270,006tonnesontheFortescueMetalsGrouploadedshipHLTUBARAO-toleavePortHedlandatarecordsailingdraftof19.95metres.</p><p>OMCcontinuestoworkcloselywithPPAtooptimiseclearancedepthsandmakethemostofthehighestpartofthetidetosendoutasmanyofthebiggerironorecarriersaspossible,DrOBriensaid.Oneofourmostsignificantjointachievementswasin2015whenarecordeightshipssailedforthefirsttimeontheonetideunderDUKCadvicefromPortHedland,whichhasalargetidalrangeandlongtransittime.Meanwhile,atthesmallerregionalbulkportofGeelong,theVictorianRegionalChannelsAuthorityadoptedDUKCin2015asawayofadmittinglargershipswithmorecargo,withoutrequiringanychangestothechannelinfrastructure.Intherightcircumstances,shipsmaybeallowedupto12metresdraftandthatmeansacargoupliftof1350to3000tonnespership.Foroneoftheportsshippers,VivaEnergy,eachextra10cminshipdraftresultsinasavingofabout$1millionayear.InFebruary,DUKCtechnologyplayedakeyroleinhelpinganothershipperGrainCorpsetnewtonnagerecordsforitsGeelongoperations,thusimprovingtheglobalcompetivenessofVictoriangrains.UnderDUKCadvicetheNordPolluxsailedwithmorethan61,900tonnes(biggestsingleshipmentofcanolafullyloadedinGeelong),theTomahawkdepartedcarryingalmost61,800tonnes(biggestsingleshipmentofwheatfullyloadedinGeelong)andtheTwinkleIslandsailedwithabout62,500tonnesofbarley(largestshipmentofthegrainfullyloadedinGeelong).</p></li><li><p>GreaterawarenessofDUKCasariskmitigationtoolWhilerecognisingthehugeeconomicbenefitsofDUKCtechnology,DrOBriensaidmanyportsandsafetyauthoritieswereincreasinglyseeingthehugesafetyadvantagesofinstallingcustomisedsystemsasariskmitigationtool.ThiscapabilitywasthemainreasonwhyPortofMelbourneCorporation(PoMC)implementedourtechnologyafteralongthoroughprocessofindependentvalidationandtrialling,hesaid.ThisproofofthecapabilityofourtechnologytoaccuratelymanagetheUKCoflargeshipstransitingthesometimestreacherousentrancetoPortPhillipBay,oneoftheworldsmostchallengingwatersforshipnavigation,increasedawarenessofitsafetyadvantage.WhatmustberememberedherewithOMCsfocusontheverticaldimensionofUKCisthat,whileitisachallengetomodeltheshipasittransitsthewaterwayinreal-time,ithasthepotentialtoofferoftensignificanteconomicandenvironmentalbenefitswhilemitigatingtheriskofagrounding.GreaterawarenessofDUKCasaconjunctivedredgingdesigntoolDrOBriensaidOMCstechnologyalsominimisesdredgingbyliterallytakingshipsdeeperonacomputerscreen.Overtheyears,DUKCsmethodologyhasbeensuccessfullyusedtodesigntheverticaldimensionsofanewchannel,ortodeepenanexistingchannel,soastominimisechanneldredgingquantitiesandassociatedenvironmentaleffects.WhenaDUKCsystemisalreadyinstalledinaport,DUKCcanincreaseportcapacitywithlesscapitaldredgingbecausethissoftwarecanbeusedconjunctivelywithdredgingtocreatethechanneldepthprofilewhichmatchestheUKCrequirementsthroughoutthetransitsothattheamountofmaterialdredgedismatchedtothedepthsrequiredfortheshipstransiting.WhileitistruethatthemostoptimaldredgingdesignispossibleonlywhenaDUKCoperationalsystemhasbeeninstalled,thiscostisvalueaddingandisamortisedintothesavingsindredgingcostsandintooperationalefficiencygains,hesaid.InthePortofTaranaki,NewZealand,OMCreducedtheportsplanneddredgingcostsbyapproximately50%throughtheintroductionofDUKC.Overtheyears,OMChaswondredgingoptimisationstudiesforanumberofportsincludingDarwin,AnketellPoint,CapeLambert,OakajeeandPortHedland.DrOBriensaidOMCdoesongoingworkwithPPAandRioTintoontargetingthedredgingrequiredtooptimiseproductivity.</p><p>HesaidthatakeypartofOMCsmaintenanceandsupportismanagingtheportsbathymetricdataandsiltationissuesandweareworkingregularlywithanumberofourclients,particularlyafterstormsorcyclones,onmanagingchangingbathymetry.ItisastandardapproachofOMCtoprovidesupportservicestoanalyseandupdatewithindaysthebathymetrydatausedbytheDUKCsystemasnewsurveysbecomeavailablethusprovidingquick-turnaroundemergencybathymetricupdates.</p><p>R&amp;Dinitiatives</p><p>DrOBriensaidOMCsR&amp;DDepartmentcontinuestodevelopnewproductsandsolutionsinresponsetouserneed.TheseincludeOMCiHeavewhichmeasuresshipmotionsinextremeweatherconditions.PortsincludingBrisbane,Melbourne,Geraldton,Portland,SanFranciscoandHalifaxhaveusedOMCiHeaveforhighlyaccuraterecordingsofreal-timeshipmotionsinlargeswellswheretraditionalmethodsofmeasuringwaveresponsesbyplacingaDGPSunitonthebowaretooriskyduetotheheavyseas.HavingagooddatabaseofmeasuredwaveresponsemotionsclarifieswhetherornotaUKCproblemexists,DrOBriensaid.Thesecanalsobeusedbyportsforvalidationneedssuchas,forexample,theintroductionoflargecontainerships.</p></li><li><p>OMCplaysleadingroleinUKCMinformationexchange</p><p>AsOMCcelebratesits30thanniversarythismonth,itcontinuestoplayitsleadingroleasthedeveloperandoperatorofreal-timeUKCsystems.Inrecognitionofitsinternationalstanding,OMChasbeeninvitedtoparticipateastheExpertContributortonewdevelopmentsinUKCmanagementinformationexchangefore-navigation.OMCisprovidingitstechnologytoleadthecurrentIHOs-100UnderKeelClearanceManagementInformationProjectTeam(UKCMPT)whosebriefistodevelopanIHOS-129basedproductspecificationforUKCMinformationtoenabletheoutputsofUKCMservicestobedisplayedforusers(IHO,2015).ThisProjectTeamcomprisesanumberofIHOMemberStatesincludingSweden,France,Korea,USA,Russia,Finland,UKandTheNetherlandsandischairedbyarepresentativefromtheAustralianMaritimeSafetyAuthority(AMSA).Thisworkisexpectedtobecompletedin2018.</p><p>ThisinternationalrecognitionoftheleadingroleofOMCinthedevelopmentofUKCMsystemsbuildsupontheearlierrecognitionbyPIANCininvitingDrOBrientoparticipateastheonlyAustralianrepresentativeoninternationalWorkingGroupsfortheHarbourApproachChannelsDesignguidelines(PIANCReportNo.121publishedin2014)andUseofHydroMeteoInformationforPortAccessandOperation(PIANCReportNo.117publishedin2012.)OMCisalsoanindustrialmemberofIALA,andparticipatesintheworkofitsVTSande-Navigationcommittees.</p><p>Lookingahead,DrOBriensaidthatasothercompaniesstarttoenterthenichebusinessofreal-timeUKCtechnologyandmakeclaimsthattheycandeliverreliableandvalidriskmanagement,itiscrucialthatgovernmentandmaritimesafetyauthoritiesshouldbenchmarkanynewproposalagainsttheonlyprovenUKCmanagementsystemwhichhassignificantlong-termvalidity-thatisalongtrackrecordofsafesailingswithnogroundings.</p><p>OurAustraliantechnologyisworldsbestpracticeformodellingthecriticalverticaldimensionofUKCandtherehavebeenmorethan160,000transitsworldwideusingDUKCadvicewithoutasinglegroundingincidentinthepast24years,DrOBriensaid.ThereisaDUKCassistedshipsailingsomewhereintheworldeveryhourwhichiswellworthcelebrating!</p><p>*On16November2015,OMCsmaritimetechnologywinsthe2015InternationalBulkJournal(IBJ)SafetyinBulkHandling(Marine)Award,announcedatadinnerinAntwerp.</p><p>*IntheQueensBirthdayHonoursListinJune2015,OMCInternationalExecutiveDirectorDrTerryOBrienisappointedaMember(AM)oftheOrderofAustraliaforsignificantservicetomaritimeengineering,tothedevelopmentofinnovativemarinenavigationequipmentandtoeducation.</p><p>*On19November2014,OMCExecutiveDirectorDrTerryOBrienAMisinductedintotheAustralianMaritimeHallofFameformakinganoutstandingcontributiontoAustraliasmaritimeindustryduringanimpressivecareerspanningmorethan50years.</p><p>*On19November2012,atanawardsceremonydinnerinHamburg,OMCwinsthe2012IBJInnovativeTechnologyAwardforshipmotionmeasurementinstrumentOMCiHeave.</p><p>Mediainquiries:LouiseMaher+61394126500</p></li></ul>
