TRANSCRIPT
Challenge Design a u*lity reel for the Ultra High Pressure (UHP) tubing, abrasive, air and communica*ons lines to wrap onto easily without “kinking” the UHP tubing or diminishing the flow of air and abrasives. The reel must be easily assembled in the field and mobile enough to be handled by one person. Design Criteria • Minimize material and opera*onal space (footprint). • Posi*ve accurate response to movements of the cuHng bridge
during water-‐jet cuHng process. • Springs required to keep u*li*es *ght during forward and
reverse opera*ons. • Large and small drum diameters must correspond to the
number of revolu*ons required for the length of the water-‐jet table and gravita*onal spring.

Coiled Spring Assembly
Three (3) coiled “watch” springs and hub assemblies are embedded internally to put a constant force against the rota*onal force required to “unwrap” the u*li*es from the reel during opera*on.
Gravita6onal Spring
Angular “slot” allows the weighted pulley to roll down the incline, keeping a constant tension on the u*li*es as they wrap and unwrap from the small diameter reel. The “gravita*onal” spring does not have a finite number of cycles!

160X U6li6es Reel
Fabricated u*li*es reel before paint and finishing touches. The reel rotates easily on a spindle shaR with an inner and outer bearing that supports the required load with a minimum of a 3:1 S.F. The large reel was made from aluminum while the “A-‐frame” and “gravita*onal” spring assembly were made from steel to ensure a sturdy founda*on when bolted to the floor.
160X Locking Mechanism
Two (2) safety pins are added to the steel frame to ensure there was no movement of the reel during assembly and maintenance of the unit. The safety pins are secured into the pocket via a spring loaded “detent” ball at the end of the pin. During opera*on, the safety pins are stored along side the steel “A-‐frame” out of the way during rota*on.
