AfghanistanVine leaf effect on the speed of blood

School: Shah Hussain Hotak Afghan High schoolSupervisor: Suleyman InanStudents: Ahsanullah Naqeebullah, Qudratullah Haji Mohammed Omar

ProjectIn biology “Inheritance” unit of the hereditary diseases hemophilia disease process issues for patients with hemophilia after we woke up the idea of what we can do. After the project idea emerged from various sources, we’ve made the necessary research. In our research, in this regard of this issue vine plant (grape plant) which we have seen would be useful. How we can see this idea for this effect? So then we started to run this idea for this effect. Ko-caeli University Medical Faculty of the Central Lab employees has received information about this topic. And this topic is stopping blood with the help of vine leaf (grape leaf).

AfghanistanSwamp air cooler or evaporative air cooler

School: Shah Hussain Hotak Afghan High schoolSupervisor: Suleyman InanStudents: Rashud Ahmad Abdulzahir, Abdulsami Haji Abdullah, Noorullah Agha Haji Inayatullah

ProjectThe reason to make the swamp air cooler is that it either uses less energy while on the other hand it operates quite naturally without anykind of complication. To start with, evaporative coolers add humidity to the air, while air conditioners remove humidity. They don’t use any refrigerants (like Freon) so they aren’t potentially damaging to the atmosphere. Evaporative coolers provide a constant supply of fresh air, while an air conditioner operates best in a closed environment and re-circulates the same air over and over.

AfghanistanNatural washing water

School: Shah Hussain Hotak Afghan High schoolSupervisor: Suleyman InanStudents: Abdulwaras Haji Inayatullah, Zebihullah Haji Azizullah

ProjectOur project is about to achieve natural washing water from the coal ash of the oak tree. Our objective is to protect the water from the harms of the remained chemical meterial and to benefit economically. We took some firewood of the oak tree and placed it in a container and ignit it to burn. After burning, it changes into coal and after waiting some time the coal converts to ash. After that we mixed the water and the ashes and we waited some time. The water on the top is clean.

ProjectMetals having chemical and electrochemical reactions with their sur-roundings can go bad and become unusable, It’s called corrosion. Many metals, especially iron, undergo corrosion when exposed to air and water. 1/10 of all metallic materials produced every year becomes unusable and it’s not possible to recycle them. Loss caused by corrosion costs billions of dollars every year. This study presents the results of corrosion resistance of ground blast furnace slag (GBFC), chrome slag (CS) and corn stems ash (CSA).

AlbaniaAn environmental-friendly construction

aggregate

School: Turgut Özal Private High SchoolSupervisor: Nebi Ilker SevimStudents: Ori Hoxha, Egi Meti

ProjectCement has been the major substance in preparing mortar to be used in building practice since the beginning of 20th century. Until then mor-tars used were sand-lime mortars. Although it is not as practical as the modern mortar which contains cement, it must be accepted that it is more environment-friendly because the production of cement in facto-ries causes a huge amount of air pollution. This project demonstrates how also CaCO3 can contribute to CO2 reduction by optimalisation of

clinker performance.

AlbaniaChildren and air pollution

School: Turgut Özal Private High SchoolSupervisor: Nebi Ilker SevimStudent: Olsi Brashani

ProjectThis project deals with the effects of air pollution on chil-dren’s health. The preliminary idea was to detect the rates of air pollution just above the ground level. All these led in the intent of my research, that, however air pollutants are distrib-uted in the whole environment, the greatest amount is accu-mulated near the ground surface. The conclusive idea is that being environmentally unprotect-ed, children have a greater tendency to suffer from asthma or probably other respiratory illnesses. The best way to prevent this is to nestle the babies in your arms, so by increasing their distance with the ground surface where pollutants are pre-dominant, you can decrease their possibility to have respira-tory problems. Children are more affected than adults.

School: Dede Korkut High SchoolSupervisor: Mesut KizilStudents: Emil Ahmadli, Jeyhun Keleshov

ProjectThermoacoustic cooling is one of the search fields related to thermoacoustics. In a thermoacoustic fridge temperature dif-ferences can be obtained by means of sound power. A model prepared to see temperature differences on stock surface which was the most important part of the thermoacoustic system. The purpose of the model was to see thermoacoustic power lead to temperature differences.

AzerbaijanThe removal of silver from electroplating wastewater

School: Dede Korkut High SchoolSupervisor: Mesut KizilStudents: Elvin Hajiyev, Aykhan Ibrahimov

ProjectSilver is among the most widely used metals in metal industries. Because of high cost of silver supplies in enterprises metals coated with a thin layer of silver are used. Galvanic technology represents an important place in metal industry. Production activities increasing day by day and the development of industry, the increasing use of galvanic technology in-dustry supplies in metal plating factories has provided discharge of some metals in question into the environment with waste water. In this study the recovery of silver taken from the recycled waste water of metal plating factory and solutions prepared in a lab was examined.

AzerbaijanAluminium -Air Battery

School: Lenkeran Private High SchoolSupervisor: Perviz IsmayilovStudents: Rafet Mikayilov, Celil Mehdiyev

ProjectAluminum can react with water because it is active metal. But there is the oxide layer around aluminum and the reaction does not occur.Aluminum react with acids and strong bases to form hydrogen gas, because aluminum is an amphoteric metal. It is very ex-pensive to get hydrogen gas by this way. But aluminum cannot react with water, which is very cheap matter and we can find it everywhere because of oxide layer. We destroy the oxide layer by making aluminum amalgam and the reaction starts. Aluminum will give electron by reaction with water. These electrons will gain by oxygen in cathode and the oxygen will be reduced. And we will get electrochemical potential. In the same time, Al(OH)3 will be formed by the reaction of aluminum with water.

BrazilEcological Station - Application of Moringa

oleifera seed as an organic coagulant

School: Fundação Escola Técnica Liberato Salzano Vieira da CunhaSupervisor: Luis Eduardo SelbachStudent: Marina Selbach

ProjectProblems related to environment have been subject of the main discus-sions around the world, mainly those related to water. Water treatment stations are essential to communities in order to get drinking water of desirable quality. However, many stations use chemical coagulants that result in harmful residues to environment at the end of the process. The purpose of this project is creating a treatment station which will use the Moringa oleifera seeds as an organic coagulant – Ecological Water Treatment Station.

BrazilIntelligent Helmet II

School: Fundação Escola Técnica Liberato Salzano Vieira Da CunhaSupervisor: Ramon HansStudent: Thiago Alcides Jacobi

ProjectThis study was designed, keeping in mind a large number of motorcyclists who were not using the safety helmet and died of head injury. In 28% of cases of death, the motorcyclists were not using the helmet, or did the misuse. This large number of deaths could be minimized with proper use of the helmet, as the main cause of death was head injury. It is noticed that the national secu-rity scenario is worrying and it is aggravated when it involves reckless drivers and pilots. This project aims to design and construct an electronic device or method that encourage and require all motorcyclists to use the safety helmet, and therefore greater security.

BrazilEvaluation of the effectiveness of extracts of Ruta graveolens & Peumus boldus Molina in the combat to the population of Pediculus capitis

School: Escola de Educação Básica e Profissional Dona Sinhá NevesSupervisor: Vandeir PassosStudent: Caroline Daniele Silva

ProjectThe Pediculus capitis, scientific name of the louse-give-head, is the cause of the disease known as pediculose, could still cause other disease, such as: epidemic typhoid fever, leuke-mia, irritability, aggressiveness, sleepiness of the day, dis-turbance alimentary, low school income, stress and cephalic dermatite. As much the louse as his/her nit they can be found adhered to the fibers of the fabrics of the clothes. After bibli-ographical research, we defined that Arruda (Ruta graveolens) and Boldo (Peumus boldus Molina) would be the vegetables used to remove the extracts, that associated to craft soaps and glycerin soap, would have their applied solutions on the louse and his/her nit to test their effectiveness and to monitor the time elapsed for the death of both.

BrazilChemical characterization of vegetable extract

used in transmission vectors

School: Colégio Estadual Liceu De MaracanaúSupervisor: Maria das Gracas Franca SalesStudent: Joao Batista De Castro David Junior

ProjectNowadays, dengue virus diseases spreads caus-ing major epidemics and bringing damage to the world population. Control methods of Aedes ae-gypti become ineffective in the face of resistance developed by the insects, and pesticides pollute the environment if used improperly. Therefore we need to identify alternative methods, ef-fective and biodegradable, insect-larvicides to combat this plague. My main objective is to develop a method of control of A. aegypti that surpasses conventional methods in three main aspects: effectiveness, cost and environmental.

Czech RepublicWind power efficiency

School: Meridian International SchoolSupervisor: Kasim GulStudents: Mehmet Enes Inam, Pavel Stirba

ProjectEnergy efficiency is one of the most benefi-cial area for researchers. Our idea is to apply a method to increase the Efficiency of Air related systems by considering the molecular collisions. We studied on Windmill power output efficiency as an area of application for our main idea. In-stead of increasing the collision time and allow-ing more energy to be absorbed, there should be a way to create a repulsive force between the air molecules and the surfaces, thus may create a repulsion force more effectively. This method could be applied to all jet engine systems and other energy producing machines.

School: R. Shahin friendship liceumSupervisor: Cihan MertStudent: Mariam Kekenadze

ProjectThe Black Sea coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world. However galvanic and metallurgical industries annu-ally release into the sea great quantities of valuable and scarce substances which could be recovered from this sewage for their industrial recycling. By the application of reagent-free, eco-pure electrodialysis method to the salt solutions (NaCl, Na2SO4) ar-tesian and sea water we show the feasibility of the composite technology development for the manufacture of a number of products and the sea water rectification from galvanic/cellulose industry sewage.

GeorgiaAutotransplantation of spleen’s tissue after splenectomy

School: Private Demirel CollegeSupervisor: Cihan MertStudents: Giorgi Kolbaia, Ilia Kevlishivili

ProjectDoctors often have to cut off the whole spleen (also called a splenectomy) just a part of spleen from a patient because of closed traumas in stomach area. But both of these methods cause a problem sometimes. To resolve this problem, a spe-cific method of operation was worked out. When the spleen is cut off, healthy parts of it are saved and auto-transplanted in an artificial pocket of epiploon.

GeorgiaThe roles of the antioxidants and melanin against free radicals

School: Private Demirel CollegeSupervisor: Cihan MertStudents: Tornike Otiashvili, Ekaterine Munjishvili

ProjectOur project is about hair, its functions and how we can help it to func-tion well. Therefore this project is about melanin. However, melanin is not only in hair, but also it is everywhere in our skin. The main thing is that there are a lot of diseases coming from a huge amount of free radicals. In order to protect hair from free radicals mela-nin is significant, so in our project we will discuss about some diseases and the main role of melanin in curing such diseases. As a result of our researches we concluded that if we could find the antioxidant of those free radicals which injure neuromelanin being the main reason of Par-kinson, we can easily cure it. In coming researches it can be discovered.

GhanaSay ‘no’ to chemicals: eco friendly pesticides in the control of nematodes

School: Galaxy International SchoolSupervisor: Gokhan ZenginStudents: Adjowa Adjeleh Hawa Addo-Yobo, Kyei Elizabeth Duku

ProjectChemical insecticides like furadan etc. are harmful to soil organisms, water bodies, and farmers. Chemicals leave residues in the soil which are washed into streams, rivers etc. through canals. Environmentally safe, human and soil-organism-friendly method of pest control should be found. Thus, the use of citronella and lemon grass to control nema-todes in carrot. Our conclusion is that citronella and lemon grass are effective in the control of nematodes in the soil. Citronella is more effective at control-ling soil organism than lemon grass. However, T5 (citronella + furadan) is the best treatment.

GhanaWave power

ProjectWaves are a result of the effects of wind on the ocean and seas. Waves can be good resource of renewable alternative energy. The ocean con-verts the gravitational forces from the celestial bodies into mechanical energy. This kinetic energy can be transformed following similar rotor/turbine principles used to extract energy from dams. The energy contained within waves around the world is huge : in some places values of 70 MW/km of wave front are experi-enced. In the theory it could then be said that generation stations could be built which would capture all this energy and supply all or most of our needs.

School: Sma Pribadi Bilingual Bording SchoolSupervisor: Ravza UludagStudents: Fira Rustania, Gita Andini

ProjectThe technology development, particularly in industries sector, has caused great impact towards our nation’s economic growth but also towards our environment. Water pollution is the topic that we will discuss in this project. The level of pol-lution at water can reduce by some treat-ment that is called purification. There are many kind of purification process, one of them is purification using plants as puri-fier, and we are also know it as fitoreme-diation. The plants have ability to absorb a metal that dissolved on water so that the metal level on the water can be de-creased.

IndonesiaProducing environment friendly edible film for food wrapper from jack fruit seed

School: Sma Pribadi Bilingual Bording SchoolSupervisor: Ravza UludagStudents: Cut Nyak Savira, Aisyah Minzikrina Masbar

ProjectPackaging for food product is extremely important in term of pre-serving the quality of the food and various dairy products because of its role in preserving humidity, gas and scent and other vari-ous elements from the products to the environment and vice versa. So far in Indonesia, packaging is still very dependant to the use of plastics, which made of petroleum such as polystyrene and polyeth-ylene. Plastics made of petroleum is not bio-degradable, which later, the waste material will pollute the environment. Therefore, there is an urgency to find alternatives that have similar important feature as plastics that has the ability to degrade biologically (biodegradable), which is also edible. Jackfruit seed can be processed into an edible film that is also environment friendly.

KazakhstanExtraction of noble metals from sulphide

ores by the sulphite – bisulphite – tiosulphate solutions

School: Pavlodar Kazakh High School for gifted girlsSupervisor: Ibrahim TuncerStudents: Akerke Amangeldina

ProjectTo relieve our world from harmful and toxic cyanide solu-tions, from the process of the interaction of sodium sulphite with the sulphur containing product – the waste product from the oil-gas raw material of the Tengiz deposit has been investigated. It has been stated that pretreating of the Tengiz sulphur with the 0,3% sodium hydroxide solution positively influences the reaction velocity. The accelerating role of the sodium hydroxide solution can be interpreted as the ability of the hydroxide ions to activate the sulphur atoms resulting in the formation of the intermediate compounds – polysul-phide that catalyst of the sodium and ammonium tiosulphate formation.

MacedoniaBioethanol from bananas and peaches for

environmentally friendly world’s future

School: Private Yahya Kemal College - ButelSupervisor: Aksu SametStudents: Martina Siljanovska, Maja Veljanova

ProjectAs the world’s energy resources are reducing constantly, it is very important for us to find new alternative energy resources. From the several existent types of energy we decided to examine all the as-pects, so that we could choose the energy that would show the best economic factors as well as the most important issue- the bio-fuel that would be the most eco-friendly. (Moreover, by converting the directly fermentable sugars of bananas and peaches we managed to derive the bio-fuel we expected, alcohol from organic matter, to be precise, at the same time using fruit which is misshapen and rotten- not fresh to eat).

MacedoniaA revolutionary new biodegradable

School: Private Yahya Kemal CollegeSupervisor: Emel SherifStudents: Stefan Kuzmanovski, Nikolce Kolev

ProjectThe purpose of this project is to present a new type of a bioplastic, a plastic that is not derived from petroleum and a plastic that is biode-gradable at the same time. The advantage is that this plastic will not take up space on the landfills forever because we can compost the bioplastic (natural degradation in record times). With this we solve the problem of having way to much waste and not having anywhere to put it and also in the process we don’t destroy precious agriculture areas, which we have less and less as time passes.

MacedoniaReduction of the environmental impact of iron ore waste and cyanide effluents and their usage as fertilizer

School: Private Yahya Kemal CollegeSupervisor: Emel SherifStudent: Anita Najdova

ProjectThe iron sludge waste that is generated by some industries as a byprod-uct is identified as a hazardous solid waste under the Hazardous Wastes Management & Handling. The use and disposal of cyanide solutions used to dissolve and extract gold from ore is another environmental concern. This project discusses new strategies for the disposal of iron sludge and cyanide effluents, particularly the “converting into fertilizer” strategy and the “use in soil” strategy. In the first case we find the effective, easy and cheap method to decontaminate and reduce the potential environ- mental impact of iron ore wastes-iron sludge and cyanide effluents by converting them into nitrogen rich and iron rich fertilizers. In the second part of our project we examine if the products of these wastes are used in soils to which extend will they affect the quality of plant products.

MacedoniaFrom Waste To Energy - Coffee Just Keeps Getting Better

School: Private Yahya Kemal College - ButelSupervisor: Aksu SametStudents: Dimitrina Siljanoska, Anastasija Siljanoska

ProjectIn order to provide a solution for the upcoming worldwide fuel crisis in the future, new methods for production of biofuels are being rapidly developed. More importantly, there is an unstopping demand for new sources that would allow cheap and effective production of these fuels. As an alternative, we propose using spent coffee grounds, an unusable waste material daily “produced” in almost every home on the planet. Coffee beans have the same oil amount as other crops that have been used for production of biodiesel up until now, yet they produce a more stable and long-lasting fuel than the most of them.

MexicoCulture medium cooling device

ProjectOne of the most important systems in the study and identification of microorganisms is the observation of the growth of artificial food sub-stances prepared in the laboratory. The food substance in which micro-organisms grow is called the Cultural Medium. During the preparation in the first cooling stage, usually inconveniences present themselves, such as: the partial cooling of the medium, and sometimes the forma-tion of bubbles and lumps which cause discharge in the petri plates. Therefore our goal is to design a receptacle that functions as a use-ful tool in the preparation of culture media and that facilitates a better cooling of the medium during the preparation process, avoiding con-tamination risks before and after the opening of the plates, allowing for the possibility to perform bacteriological studies with the best preci-sion, speed and confidence in the results.

RomaniaThe solution to fight bio-ecologicaly against cockroaches: food for us, poison for them!

School: Dimitrie Bolintineanu High SchoolSupervisor: Valeria Purcarea-CiulacuStudents: Emilia Nicoleta Ion, Dragos Gherghescu

ProjectThe cockroaches can be met everywhere around us. They travel all the time in garbage, dirty places, from where they contaminate with pathogen germs that later they place on dishes, food, in this way transmitting severe diseases for the human. To fight back these phenomena the discovery of a new unpolluting and biodecayable insecticide substance is needed. The innovation of this environmental project is that we man-age to extract from plants some botanical bioinsecticides with lethal effect for blatidae disease transmitters and discomfort producers but without toxic and pollution effect over the man and the environment.

RomaniaIntelligent electric vehicle power regeneration

School: International Computer High School of BucharestSupervisor: Gogoncea DanStudent: Amariei Cornel

ProjectIf you connect two electric motors, and spin by hand one of them (no electric source or power generator needed), what will happen? The other one will also spin, because of induction. Basically, according to this theory, every electric motor can very easily become an electric generator, some of them even being able to generate, at specific speeds, up to 80% of the energy required to make it spin (when powered from a battery). Now imagine the same concept in an electric car. Power can now be regenerated from many things, such as breaking and cruising, even from using only a part of the motors while the others serve as generators. This can improve the energy use by almost 50%.

School: The Young Scientists of SlovakiaSupervisor: Jan SiposStudent: Jaroslav Ferenc

ProjectThis project presents a solution for soils poluted by heavy metals. I´m interested in this topic, because soils in my region contain raised amounts of them. This comes from nickel production tailings which forms a huge heap. Although, the waste is gradually being removed, contaminated soil stays. This is a problem as the soil is now being used for wheet plantig for flour production and animal feeding, so heavy metals take part in a human food chain. Solution, proposed by this work is sanitation of contaminated soil using oil plants.

School: Association for Youth Science and TechnologySupervisor: Daniela AdamcovaStudent: Aneta Pencakova

ProjectCarnivorous plants are strongly connected with environment which has a lack of organic compounds. I would like to confirm or disprove this fact by the measurement of nitrates concen-tration. My observation was focused on monitoring of water chemical properties influence in different areas and its possible influence on the size and growth of plants. The results showed that chemical properties of water (nitrates, pH) most probably do not have any influence on size of leaves rosettes, because the size of plants with the same properties of water was dif-ferent.

TaiwanTechnical revival of traditional blue dyeing through zeolite catalysis and electrolysis

School: National Tainan Senior High SchoolSupervisor: Ming-Sheng TengStudent: Chung-Kai Hung

ProjectEver since the Qing Dynasty, the method of dyeing cloth with Indigo, a natural plant extract, has been practiced in Taiwan, producing large amounts of beautifully dyed blue traditional clothing. Yet Traditional Blue Dying, being wasteful, time-consuming, and polluting, was lost in the heat of industrialization, having been replaced by chemical processes, which were fast, cheap, but very harmful to the environment. Thus in the modern era we saw the need to make Traditional Blue Dyeing faster, cheaper, more eco-friendly, and more competitive in modern market, contributing not only to the environment but also to cultural conservation.

organic plant growth

School: SamanyoluSupervisor: Bulent IsikStudents: Samed Sahin, Ibrahim Yildirim

ProjectThe environment is a fragile organism; living things must have a healthy environment in order to grow and produce, unhealthy envi-ronment results in unhealthy living organisms that cannot grow nor produce. Technology has improved daily life making jobs easier, using batteries as the power source. Modernization however, has it’s danger’s, some having the potential to kill. Our project demonstrates the effect of these same (waste) batteries on plants, gives definitive proof of the necessity for a more responsible application and disposal of batteries.

USAA bright detective: can vibrio fischeri

detect bio-available water pollutants in the watershed of stony creek?

School: Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter SchoolSupervisor: Jane AndrakaStudent: Jack Andraka

ProjectThis project uses the bioluminescent organism Vibrio fischeri to detect bio-available water pollutants in the Stony Creek watershed. Biolumi-nescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. The light is produced through a chemical reaction between the sub-strate luciferin and the enzyme luciferase. Differences in the amount of light produced can therefore be correlated to the organism’s me-tabolism. The reduction of light emitted is proportional to the toxicity of the aquatic sample. The hypothesis formed was that Vibrio fischeri could detect the water pollution because they would cause a decrease in light intensity, which could be measured to find the bioavailability of the water pollutants in the sample.

USAElectrochemical remediation of AMD - A

solution to acid mine polution?

School: North County High SchoolSupervisor: Karen GrunerStudent: Luke Andraka

ProjectThis project studies the possibility of mitigating the adverse en-vironmental effects of acid mine drainage (AMD) by using elec-trochemical treatment to raise the pH, harvest dissolved metals and produce hydrogen as an energy source. It was hypothesized that by using electrolysis the free hydrogen ions could be re-moved from the AMD and collected as hydrogen gas to be used as an energy source while reducing the acidity. Raising the pH would also precipitate metals out of solution, removing them from being an environmental pollutant. Using a two-chamber electrolysis cell with a removable ion exchange membrane, tests were performed to compare the change in pH and conductivity when the AMD was placed in the anode, the cathode, or both cell chambers. Hydrogen gas production was also measured.

School: Jesuit High SchoolSupervisor: Ananda VardhanaStudent: Aishwarya Vardhana

ProjectConsuming energy derived from fossil fuels and nuclear power plants, also known as conventional energy, is harmful to the Earth, but it is challenging for a large power consumer to switch from conventional to renewable energy. The objective of this project is to create, using a linear programming based mathematical model, a method for large companies to consume more renewable energy for a minimal extra cost. The mathematical model is developed based on input. This is input is five years of data collection from a semi-conductor company and various power-generating companies.

USAThe feasability of creating fuel bricks from methane digested pulp

ProjectTillamook has an economy that bases itself on two major indus-tries; logging and dairy farming. Disposal of bovine fecal waste is a constant problem for local farmers. A methane digester con-verts this to methane gas to produce electricity. The byproduct of this process is a sterile liquid and a sterile pulp. The sterile pulp can be compressed into fuel bricks for burning in a wood stove. I tested both the meth-ane digested pulp against sawdust bricks to compare density, ash content, and heat output. The result showed that the methane digested pulp brisk had a comparable heat output to the sawdust brick though the pulp brick had a slightly higher ash content.

School: Praedinius GymnasiumSupervisor: Heike Kirsten Elisabeth StadermannStudents: Jesse Joost Slim, George Pu-Jie Liao, Oscar Christiaan Veen

ProjectThe most common example of electromagnetic powered ve-hicles, are the Magnetic Levitation trains in Japan and China. We decided to develop something completely different, since building ‘maglev’ trains has been done over and over. Eventu-ally we developed a car that drives by pulling/pushing itself on to/from different magnets under the road surface. The final model is a finetuned version of the prototype and this model has turned out to be a small vehicle/car, about the size of a shoebox, that is driven by the attraction/repulsion of magnets on a track specifically designed for this mechanism.

NetherlandsFartenergy

School: Cygnus GymnasiumSupervisor: José Carlos CaballeroStudents: Floris Jansen, Jan Garritzen, Martin van Harmelen

ProjectWith our project ‘Fartenergy’ we want to reduce the methane output of mankind. Methane (CH4) is 23 times more power-ful than CO2 as a greenhouse gas, so it provides a large part of the global warming effect. When a cow breaks wind, the gas it releases contains a lot of CH4. All 1,5 billion cows on earth cause about 4 to 9% of global warming, which is about the same amount as all manmade vehicles like cars, trucks and planes produce together! We want to collect the methane to produce energy and in this way reduce global warming. We calculated that we can collect about 11 tons of methane per year from a farm with 100 cows.

NetherlandsBe keen, take green

School: Het Drachtster LyceumSupervisor: Evert KokStudents: Frits Versloot, Gerjan de Vries, Sanne van Gammeren

ProjectMost of the time people do not realize how bad plastic actually is for our environment. We broadened our knowledge of the existence of ‘the Great Pacific Garbage Patch’: a pile of plastic litter floating in the Pacific Ocean. The Patch has been very harmful for the environment. The plastic could not be biodegraded by the ocean but it could be de-graded by UV-radiance of the sun. The waste products exist of extreme small parts sink into deeper water. Those small parts will be regarded as plankton by animals that live in the sea and they will eat it. In this way these animals will be poisoned. We also examined by what environmentally friendly material the plas-tic could be replaced. We compared Hemp cloth, cornstarch cloth (biobag®), cotton and plastic by testing these goods to combustibility and defensibility. Hemp cloth showed the best scores. Our conclusion is that Hemp cloth is better than plastic at several levels, but it has a more expensive production process. The Hemp industry will evolve slowly, therefore the price of the production and product will decline due to increasing competition.

NetherlandsEnergy reduction in houses

School: TheresialyceumSupervisor: Bas de WaalStudents: Gijs Ybema, Nick Dekkers, Bryan Johan Juliana, Kevin van der Eerden, Jonathan Veersma

ProjectEnergy will become more and more scarce. Therefore it is important to use energy as effcient as possible. In this research, several ways of saving energy have been investigated. A new way of harvesting en-ergy from the sun is also described. The project as submitted for this competition, is a elaboration of a physics project in highschool. The investigation is a casestudy, while focusing on a real life situa-tion. Literature has been studied, so as to see what is state-of-the-art. That led to the idea of using even more efficient solar panels, which also use ultraviolet radiation. In this investigation, several ways of saving energy on a house level have been looked at. One can think of using solar energy, smart ventilation or using a “green roof”. Both the energy saving, as well as the economical aspect have been looked at. This has led to several options to improve energy efficiency on a house level and even a novel way of harvesting energy from the sun.

School: Cosmicus Montessori LyceumSupervisor: Tuncer AkyaziStudents: Daniel, Michael, Enes

ProjectEnergy is the source of life. Nowadays fossil fuels energy is commonly used, but by using these kinds of energy we are dependent on it but we must find innovative energy sources. We must find sources from which energy can be converted in useful one. In our project we trans-late the energy instead of producing it. Even we don’t realize there is a huge amount of energy. If we can concentrate this heat energy in a certain place, we can use it without producing a new one. In order to understand the amount of energy that is possible to transfer from outside, we can compare atmosphere.with the buildings that we live. Atmosphere has how much energy ever we want. We are going to use just a little amount of this energy to heat our buildings.
