Dear Parishioners,

“Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter”

The scene from this weekend’s Gospel is a powerful one. Jesus walks on the water amid a storm and the terrified apostles see him from their boat. Peter attempts to walk towards the Lord and falters. Jesus reaches out to him to save him.

The Gospel reassures us that the Lord is always stretching his arm out to catch us when we stumble or fall. The Lord is so willing to forgive, to begin anew.

We live at a time when many live in the fear of Covid. We live in a culture that is so unforgiving. We all know people who are so quick to judge and dismiss another. It is not like that in the Kingdom of God! Jesus is the One who loves us and calls us to leave behind our self-righteousness, our resentments, our pride. We don’t always have to be “right”; we don’t always have to be “better” or more “holy”. The Lord loves us and joins us on our journey of faith!

There is a lot happening on campus as we prepare to continue the reopening process. As you know, it is a series of small steps. Necessary for the safety of all!

We are preparing to reopen the school and it is challenging. We will be ready! Religious Education will begin with e-learning. Information will be coming out soon. Youth Ministry will need to wait a bit longer. We are awaiting guidance for the gradual reopening of the parish. Thank you for your patience. Many groups and organizations are anxious to meet. The restrictions will have an impact on parish programming for the Fall. We will try and accommodate as many requests considering the Archdiocesan protocols.

I am pleased to announce that Fr. Patrick Kizza will serve as Director of Evangelization. This includes the RCIA program. He will be the priest chaplain to the Men’s CHRP team and priest chaplain to the Religious Education Board. He will also serve as priest chaplain to the Scripture Study program.

Fr. Larry Basbas will serve as Director of Liturgy and priest chaplain to the Women’s CHRP team. He will also serve as priest chaplain to SPRED. I am taking the year off, only kidding!

We had our first weekend of First Communion and Confirmation celebrations for the candidates in Religious Education. The celebrations were beautiful, and it was so great to see our students and their families. We will celebrate these sacraments at 16 more liturgies in the coming weeks so that everyone receives either their First Communion or Confirmation.

On Sunday, August 23, from 10:00am to 11:30am we will celebrate “Drive by Back to School blessings” in the parking lot. This will be a back to school experience for the history books. If you would like a special blessing for your returning grammar school, high school or college students drive by the Parish center for a blessing!

During the previous Lenten season, our almsgiving project was NPH, Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos. We had a great week with the children from their home in El Salvador. We raised over $8000.00. Thank You for your generous support. NPH transforms the lives of vulnerable children in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our parishioner, Chuck Allworth is the Midwest Director.

Happy Birthday Greetings to Todd Cowen, Mary Maginot, and Fr. Jim Barrett. Happy Wedding Anniversary to Bill and Marie Yacullo and Steve and Mary Ann Travnik. Congratulations to Dottie Easton and Joe Masterson on their wedding this weekend.

May your week be blessed!

Thoughts on the

Sunday ScripturesTHE PRESENCE OF GODAfter the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

seek, share, rejoice - special intention prayer project...

Centennial News & Events

Special Intention Prayer ProjectThe CRHP Continuation Committee is committed to recognizing OLPH’s 100th anniversary and to supporting our community during this challenging time. Our 100th Anniversary service project was to collect and pray for special intentions from OLPH parishioners.

Prayers were submitted via email from parishioners. The project was started on Monday, June 22 and we collected prayer intentions for about four weeks. Nearly 60 prayer intentions were submitted.

On Tuesday, July 28th the CRHP Continuation Team (CCT) met in Hellerman Garden to recognize the 100th Anniversary of OLPH with a very special prayer service. On Tuesday evening, the CCT met and prayed the rosary with each intention receiving a dedicated prayer. The evening was a powerful experience and each member of the CCT felt honored to represent those who requested the prayers.”

We now have Mass in the Playdium!Introducing Sunday 9:30 am in the Playdium!

Chairs in the Playdium are set up six feet apart for proper social distancing. However, families will be allowed to sit together.

Check the Sign-Up Genius in the Daily Eblast or call the Parish Office at 847-729-1525, for assistance.

Catholic Charities Evening Suppers Need Your Support to ContinueCatholic Charities continues to feed the needy on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. In lieu of a sit-down dinner, guests are provided a To Go meal. OLPH has committed to fund seven of these events in 2020, each running $500. Please help us feed the 100 or more that stand in line for this much needed food support.

We have three more dates to cover this year, 8/27, 10/15 and 11/5. We have been coming up short and sharing volunteers have been stepping in to cover these events. Next year we will commit to only the number of dates which are financially covered. Please help us in funding these next three dates for 2020 and donating for future dates in 2021. Contact Kathy Quinn, [email protected] to make a contribution for this year or next.

Laptop Needed

One of Sr. Paulanne’s clients is in need of a fairly up to date laptop (not more than a few years old) so that she will be able to work. Please contact Betty Collins, [email protected], if you have a unit to donate.

Clothing and Housewares Donations

The Sharing Room remains closed due to Covid. In the past, clothing donations we received were carefully sorted and most donated items were sent to agencies which serve the needy. Higher-end items and items with tags were sent to the Glenview Community Church Resale Shop. This resale shop then gave Sr. Paulanne 50% of the proceeds from OLPH items they were able to sell. Items not sold were donated to Salvation Army. This resale shop sent the balance of their funds to charities which they support; all proceeds effectively benefitting charity.

While the Sharing Room remains closed, consider donating your new or very gently used, in trend, clean items to the Glenview Community Church Resale Shop, New to You, located at 1000 Elm St. They will be open and accepting donations on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until noon, outdoors during the month of August.

Please mark your donations OLPH, so that Sr. Paulanne will receive 50% of proceeds for her work with the needy. Wear a mask and observe social distancing during donation drop off or shopping.

• Catechist meetings and training via zoom will begin late August.

• Protecting God’s Children training dates will be released for all catechists – new and established – all Virtus training will be online this year.

Below are a few items that you may expect to happen in September:

• Parking Lot Meet and Greets by grade for RE books, backpacks etc. pick-ups will begin

• Religious Education Classes will begin the week of Sunday, September 27: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday and Saturdays.

Technology UpdateTransitioning from pre-recorded to livestreamed Mass

We have transitioned from pre-recorded Masses to livestreamed Masses. This transition has resulted in changes in the way we present the Mass online and that has lead to some issues for parishioners in their ability to find the Masses online.

Prior to the limited Reopening in June, we pre-recorded the online Masses. They could be viewed from the “Featured Mass” playlist on our YouTube Channel at any time after 6:30 am. The following day the Mass (and the Homily) would be transferred to the “Archived Mass” and “Archived Homily” playlists respectively.

Now that we are livestreaming Mass, the way to view Mass is a little bit different. We livestream one Mass per day. The livestream starts about 15 minutes before Mass time. The 8:30 am weekday Masses normally go live around 8:15 am. The Sunday 9:30 Mass goes live around 9:15. The link to the livestream is sent out in every eblast and it is on the homepage of our website. After the Mass has ended and as soon as we are able, we make the Mass available on the “Featured Mass” playlist. Then, as before, it is available for viewing the next day and thereafter from the “Archived Mass” playlist.

Each Saturday at 5:00 pm throughout the rest of the summer, we will celebrate a "Drive-in" Mass. Parishioners who register via Sign-Up Genius can attend Mass in their car and listen to the service on their car radio. Communion will be delivered to each car by our priest and deacons as they walk throughout the parking lot. The radio audio broadcast is available to those cars in attendance. The Saturday Drive-In Mass is not livestreamed. The only way to experience it is to attend.

We appreciate your understanding, patience, and support, as we are striving for continuous improvement in the ways we utilize technology to bring the Mass to you. Our goal is to maintain and, in fact, grow our spiritual community even during these times of the pandemic.

Thank you. OLPH Digital Ministry

The 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time

NEW for Sunday Mass:

Virtual Worship Aides! We are now providing parishioners with virtual worship aides.

These will be easy to use guides that are formated exactly like a printed worship aide. You will be able to turn the pages and follow along throughout the Mass. Most importantly, they will enable you to participate in the ceremony. You can view the worship aide from your phone whether you are in attendance in church on Sunday or watching the livestream from home.

The link to the worship aide will be provided in the weekend eblasts and on the homepage of our olphglenview.org website.

Thank you so much to Margie André for creating the worship aide with guidance from Russell Stern.

Thank you also to Jim Geldermann for his expertise in researching and recommending this technology.

Sign-Up Genius

The Sign Up Genius link for all Masses is being sent out in our Daily Eblasts.

For those who do not have access to a computer, contact the Parish Office, at 847-729-1525, for assistance.

The Holy Rosary is back!A group of parishioners have begun meeting casually in Mary's Garden after 8:30 Mass to pray the Rosary.

Please join us at 9:05 am for 25 minutes of peace, fresh air and the benefits of communal prayer--socially distanced of course with safety in mind. You may want to bring a hat, folding chair, umbrella, etc.

seek, share, rejoice - givecentral...

We need your support now more than ever!As you know, Sunday collections are vital to the health and sustainability of OLPH. We are always so thankful for the generosity of our parishioners. During this difficult time, we ask that you continue to support our church. With more and more restrictions in our ability to gather together or even leave our homes, it has become imperative that parishioners begin to utilize our GiveCentral online giving portal. We do understand that, up until now, some of us have been reluctant to switch from writing checks to using an online method. We seriously ask you at this time to try GiveCentral.

Accessing our GiveCentral Portal OnlineOn our website and in most of our eblasts you will see the Give Central Logo depicted here.

This logo will always be a live link to our OLPH GiveCentral homepage. Whenever you see this logo on our website or in an eblast, you will be able to click on it and it will take you directly to our portal.

Accessing our GiveCentral Portal from Your PhoneTo access our OLPH GiveCentral homepage from your phone, point your phone camera app at the qr code below. You will simply and easily be able to donate to our Sunday collection directly from your phone.

Or dial our text-to-engage number 570-354-6574 and then text the word "Sunday" to make your gift.

Our GiveCentral Home PageThe image below is a screen shot of our OLPH GiveCentral homepage. To make your regular Sunday donation, click on the "Sunday Giving" icon which has the image of our church on it.

Need assistance? We want to make this process as simple as we can for everyone.Have any questions about setting up your online donations through GiveCentral? Don't worry, we can help! Just contact our Office Manager Laura Kearney and she will assist you. Laura can be reached directly at (847) 729-2936 or at [email protected]

To summarize, we understand that making the change from writing a paper check to making a donation through an online portal may be outside of your comfort level. However, please understand how important it is for the vitality of our church that you give it a try.If for any reason you still are not comfortable making the switch, we ask that you continue to support our Church in the best way you are able.Thank you and God bless you all as we work together to get through this national health crisis.

ONLINE BIBLE STUDY WITH MUNDELEIN SEMINARY

Join Father John Kartje for a four-week online Bible study on the topic of “Living on the Edge of Chaos: Finding Hope in the Face of Fear”.

This Bible study course uses audio meditations recorded by Father Kartje with accompanying Bible passages and spiritual exercises for further conversation and reflection. Father Kartje will explore biblical examples drawn from the historical books and the prophets, Wisdom literature, the Gospels, and other New Testament texts to illustrate how the sweep of salvation history often follows a journey from order, through chaos, to a new reality shaped by the Kingdom of God.

Father Kartje will also lead a live Q&A for study participants on August 8.
