A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center,

Back in 1981, something terrible happened to me: my voice changed. The sweetest countertenor voice you’ve ever heard turned, overnight, into a bass-baritone bleat with the narrowest of ranges and extremely questionable pitch control. Having wowed the Junior High crowds in romantic leads for my entire career, I was suddenly relegated to character roles. Horrors! So I made a drastic decision: I would retire from the stage.

But not before one last hurrah. As reported by the Fairfield Citizen-News – the weekly paper of record in my hometown – my swansong was a starring turn in Guys and Dolls as Nathan Detroit. I don’t remember much about the experience (other than my father and stepmother’s thunderous applause), but I sometimes hear the faintest echo of my bass-baritone growling out the lines, “Sue me, sue me/shoot bullets through me, I love you!” (And of course, I also hear Erin Cutney’s squeaky soprano responding, “When you wind up in jail/don’t come to me to bail you out!“)

I share this story here because I suspect you or someone in your family have a similar story to share about the time you were in Guys and Dolls, or painted sets for Guys and Dolls, or saw your grandkids in Guys and Dolls, or designed the costumes for your kids’ production of Guys and Dolls. Parents sing “I Love You, a Bushel and a Peck” to their kids, while lovers of a certain age may have courted to Jean Simmons’ rendition (with Marlon Brando!) of “I’ve Never Been in Love Before.” I chose this most classic of music-theater comedies for our holiday slot because it’s the kind of musical that gets handed down from generation to generation.

Guys and Dolls marks my third holiday season with you, and I’m moved every year by the number of families who make celebrating with us an annual tradition. Even if you’re not a holy roller (or an inveterate gambler), enjoying live theater with the people you love is a perfect way to share the spirit of the season, and passing on your love of theater to the next generation ensures they’ll do the same in the years to come.

Our classic series continues in 2016 with two fantastic shows on the Mainstage: Dial ‘M’ for Murder in April and Evita in June; and for your next family theater adventure, bring the kids to Pirates of Penzance next summer. I hope you’ll join us for those, as well as the great contemporary plays we’re producing in between. But before then, please drop me a line at [email protected] and let me know your Guys and Dolls story… and of course, may your holidays be peaceful and full of family joy!

We have been active theatre patrons since we moved to the Washington, DC area in the early 1970s. Our first experience with Olney Theatre Center goes back some 30-35 years when we saw shows in the summer with some of our favorite actors from other theatres in the Washington, DC area. What we remember from those shows on the Historic Stage is the special experience of watching productions come alive, which still leaves us with fond memories today when we see shows in that venue.

We became regular subscribers after the new Mainstage and Lab theatres were added. About two years ago, we significantly expanded our involvement with

Olney Theatre Center. We were among the first patrons to sponsor an actor and we have continued this wonderful activity by sponsoring directors, choreographers, and playwrights. Sponsorship is just one of the ways for Olney Theatre Center to deepen the experience for both the patron and the recipient, and whenever possible, we take the person we are sponsoring out to dinner. A little over a year ago, Cliff joined the Board of Directors, which has been even more rewarding. Finally, we have also taken the lead effort this year in beautifying the Olney Theatre Center grounds. We have a passion for gardening and find it gratifying to see the borders come alive with color. Our flowers and dahlias liven up the lobbies, offices, and ladies’ restrooms, and we love sharing the fruits of our labors with the theatre.

Olney Theatre Center has been part of our life for many years. Throughout all these years, the mission of the theatre has been to produce quality productions that both entertain us and make us think. Under the exceptional leadership of Jason Loewith and Debbie Ellinghaus, these long-standing traits have reached new and unparalleled heights (proven this past year with the numerous Helen Hayes awards). Abe Burrows (Book Writer) After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before be-coming a successful radio script writer and writer/performer of musical parody numbers. His first Broadway libretto was Guys and Dolls, co-written with Jo Swerling, with a score by Frank Loesser. Among the musicals for which he provided librettos are Make A Wish, Can-Can and Silk Stockings (both with scores by Cole Porter), Say, Darling, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (which he also directed; score by Frank Loesser). His non-musical plays include Cactus Flower (wrote and directed) and Forty Carats (directed).

Frank Loesser (Composer and Lyricist) One of America’s great composer/lyricists, Frank Loesser began his songwriting career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a songwriting contract in Hollywood, where he spent the next eleven years working with such composers as Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs from that period include “Two Sleepy People,” “Jingle Jangle Jingle” and “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You.” The first song for which Loesser wrote both words and music was “Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition,” written during his World War II service. His Hollywood work after the war included the hit songs “Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year,” “A Slow Boat To China,” and the 1949 Oscar-winning song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” In 1948, Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley’s Aunt. The new musical, which starred ray Bolger, was called Where’s Charley? and was a hit. This led to Loesser’s next show, the hugely influential and successful Guys and Dolls in 1950, also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956 Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show, The Most Happy Fella, adapted from Sidney Howard’s play, They Knew What They Wanted. This impressive score contains over 30 musical numbers and makes extensive use of operatic techniques and forms, including recitative, arias, duets, trios and choral numbers. In 1960, he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow. In 1961, Loesser wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. His last show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during out-of-town try-outs.

Jo Swerling (Book) Born in Bardichov, russia, Swerling was a refugee of the czarist regime who grew up in New York City’s Lower East Side where he sold newspapers to help support his family. He worked as a newspaper and magazine writer in the early 1920s, then launched a playwriting career that included Street Cinderella, a comedy for the Marx Brothers. He also wrote their first movie, the unreleased silent comedy Humor Risk in 1921. He scored a major success with the book and lyrics for the 1927 musical revue The New Yorkers and the 1929 play The Kibitzer, which he co-wrote with actor Edward G. robinson. Swerling was brought to Hollywood by Columbia Pictures chief Harry Cohn to work on the screenplay for the Frank Capra picture, Ladies of Leisure, the first of several collaborations with the director. His dozens of screenplays in the 1930s and 40s include Platinum Blonde, Behind the Mask, Once to Every Woman, The Pride of the Yankees (Academy Award nomination), Lifeboat, Leave Her to Heaven and It’s a Wonderful Life. He also provided some uncredited writing for the Gone With the Wind screenplay.

Gardiner. Mr. Conway designed Teller and Posner’s production of MacBeth at Folger Theatre in Washington, DC. He was nominated for the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Set Design twelve times and won three times, most recently for Stunning, directed by Anne Kaufman at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and Tiny Tim’s Christmas Carol at Adventure Theatre-MTC.

Jeffrey Dorfman (Sound Designer) is a freelance sound designer based in Washington, DC. He has studied theater at SUNY Buffalo and University of Maryland, College Park. Rosemary Pardee (Costume Designer) is delighted to be returning home to Olney Theatre Center where she was the resident costume designer from 1987 until 1999. A member of United Scenic Artists, Ms. Pardee’s career has spanned over 40 years and more than 500 productions, and has included artistic associations with dozens of theatre and film companies. In the Washington, DC region, her work has been seen at Arena Stage, The National Theatre, Folger Theatre, round House Theatre, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, the Smithsonian Institution, and The Kennedy Center, where she was a member of the artistic team for the award-winning Sondheim Celebration. A nine-time nominee and recipient of the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Costume Design, Ms. Pardee has served on the Washington Theatre Society’s Board of Directors and was recently recognized as one of the outstanding women in American Theatre by Stage Directions Magazine.

Jason Loewith (Artistic Director) recently directed Olney Theatre Center’s critically acclaimed production of Carousel. Previous Olney Theatre Center productions include the NNPN rolling World Premiere of Steven Dietz’s Rancho Mirage as well as last season’s Avenue Q and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying [2015 Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Musical]. Jason won Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, and Jeff Awards for Best New Musical for Adding Machine: A Musical, which he co-wrote with composer Joshua Schmidt (off-Broadway, 2008). His latest musical is Big Nate: The Musical which premiered in 2013 at Adventure Theatre-MTC, co-written with Olney’s Associate Artistic Director Christopher Youstra. recent regional work as a director includes the world premiere of Broke (Alliance Theatre, Atlanta), Time Stands Still (Everyman, Baltimore), Crime and Punishment, and Working It Out (Center Stage, Baltimore), Adding Machine: A Musical (Studio Theatre, DC), and a dozen plays for Chicago’s Next Theatre Company, where he served as Artistic Director from 2002-08. Those credits include the Chicago area premieres of Dying City, Defiance, The Long Christmas Ride Home, and Fabulation. He conceived and directed the world premiere of The American Dream Songbook, and produced Chicago premieres by Caryl Churchill, Suzan-Lori Parks, Carson Kreitzer, Sam Shepard, Dael Orlandersmith, and many more. He is a three-time grantee from the NEA for Artistic Excellence, a recipient of support from the rockefeller MAP Fund and MacArthur’s International Connections Fund, and a TCG New Generations Future Leaders grant. Jason joined Olney as Artistic Director in 2013 after serving four years as Executive Director of the National New Play Network. Jason is the proud recipient of a 2015 Montgomery County Executive’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities, and serves on the board of Governors for Theatre Washington.

Debbie Ellinghaus (Managing Director) joined Olney Theatre Center in August 2014. Prior to her appointment at OTC, she was Director of Development for the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she closed significant gifts that helped to advance student scholarship and academic programming. From 2005-11, Ms. Ellinghaus was the Senior Associate Director of Development at Yale School of Drama/Yale repertory Theatre in New Haven, CT. At Yale, she was part of a university-wide campaign that raised more than $3.8 billion and included transformational gifts for Yale rep from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the robina Foundation, which established the Binger Center for New Theatre. Additionally, she raised funds for scholarships, theatrical productions, and facilities. In her role at Yale, Ms. Ellinghaus provided mentorship to MFA candidates, many of whom are now leading major theaters across the country. Previously, Ms. Ellinghaus was Director of Development at off-Broadway’s Jean Cocteau repertory Theatre. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, and is a graduate of New Actors Workshop, a professional theater training conservatory founded by Mike Nichols, George Morrison and Paul Sills. Ms. Ellinghaus currently chairs the Downtown Arts and Culture Commission in Columbia, MD, an organization that works closely with Merriweather Post Pavilion to preserve its cultural significance in Maryland.

In April of 1951, Columbia University announced the annual Pulitzer Prizes to honor and grant monetary awards to outstanding American journalists and artists. Guys and Dolls, having opened on Broadway to rave reviews in December of 1950, was on the short list for consideration for the Drama Prize. The musical was considered a funny and heartwarming triumph of musical theater; New York Times theater critic Brooks Atkinson called it “a work of art. It is spontaneous and has form, style, and spirit.”1

Unfortunately for the creative team, Guys and Dolls debuted during the heyday of Joseph McCarthy’s tenure in the U.S. Senate in Washington. His establishment of the House Un-American Activities Committee had resulted in investiga-tions and trials of American citizens who were suspected of being “red,” “Communist,” or affiliated with known Communist sympathizers. McCarthy and his delegates singled out anyone who displayed “deviant” behavior, labelling their actions “un-American” in an attempt to associate them with the Communist party. Many of HUAC’s victims with “questionable” political alignments worked and socialized in Hollywood, including screenwriter and Guys and Dolls book writer Abe Burrows. In March 1951, Burrows was asked to testify about his activities in Hollywood in 1943 socializing alongside members of the Communist party. Although he swore that he never joined the party, the investigation was controversial enough that the Trustees of Columbia University vetoed the Pulitzer jury’s decision to award the prize to Guys and Dolls.2 There was no Pulitzer Prize for Drama awarded in April 1951.

Guys and Dolls has persisted as a piece of American culture for 65 years, Pulitzer Prize or not. Creators of this musical gifted us with multiple American standards, a beloved classic film starring legendary performers Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, and the first school play for dozens of young performers. Musical theater was revolutionized in the 1950s with shows like Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, and Gypsy. The story, songs, and dances were not only entirely integrated together in a cohesive mode, but the characters were relatable and the songs were reminiscent of the popular selections on the radio; it was entertainment for the common American man and woman. Burrows’ contribution to the genre has outlived the impact of his highly publicized “un-American” activities in Hollywood.

Our ideals about being an American have shifted dramatically since 1951, as have our way of labelling what is considered “American” and what is not. This musical is with us in hundreds of high schools, middle schools, and community theaters around the country every year. A production makes its way back to New York City every fifteen years or so. Covers of these songs are some of the most-loved pieces of Americana. We are reminded of these outlandish characters and their journey through Damon runyon’s Manhattan when we hear a singer belt “If I Were a Bell” or a roulette player references “Luck Be a Lady!” This musical evokes nostalgia for a New York City that never truly existed but remains very real to us over half a century later as we re-discover it again and again.

Although Luck Be A Lady was sung in the Guys and Dolls film by Marlon Brando, it may be better remembered as a signature song for Frank Sinatra (who played Nathan Detroit). It appeared on several of his albums and was again released in 1994 as a duet with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders on Duets II.

Adelaide’s Lament is often spotlighted as one of the greatest musical theatre songs of all time. In 2002, Mandy Moore sang this song on national television as part of “Broadway’s Best From Bravo” in 2002.

FrANK LOeSSerAND THE ENDURING LEGACY OF

GUYS AND DOLLS

Many composers toil over songs and scores that grace the Broadway footlights, but surprisingly few see their work reach beyond the audience after their show’s finale. Frank Loesser’s score of Guys and Dolls has withstood the test of time and become embedded in American consciousness and culture. Here are a few examples of the indelible songs from the show and how they have been performed outside of it.

Trumpeter Miles Davis featured If I Were A Bell on his 1956 jazz album, Relaxin’ with The Miles Davis Quintet, and it became a permanent addition to most of his performances. Other notable covers include recordings by Petula Clark, Dinah Shore, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington.

Bushel and a Peck was on the Billboard charts for eighteen weeks before Guys and Dolls even opened on Broadway. It was originally performed on stage and in the movie by Vivian Blaine and was covered by Perry Como and Betty Hutton, Doris Day, Johnny Desmond, and The Andrews Sisters.

In July of 2015, Elissa Nadworny, a digital journalist for NPR, published an article which compiled data from the Dramatist archives, analyzing the most popular high school dramatic productions since 1938. Guys and Dolls has been a staple in the high school theatre canon since musicals became popular selec-tions in the 1960s. Since 2010, musicals with ties to familiar childhood movies (Beauty and the Beast, The Wizard of Oz) and pop and rock scores (Seussical: The Musical, Grease) have dominated high school stages and overhauled the common players from decades before, but Guys and Dolls remains in the top ten.

Remember, a song is like a freight train moving across a stage. Every boxcar has a word on it. Those people have to hear everything and understand it - fast, because in a minute the car will be gone and they’ll never see it again. Make them listen and then lay it in their laps. – Frank Loesser
