Art and ModernismMonika Meler, Associate Professor Art and Graphic Design

2/6, 7 and 8Influenced by the Industrial Revolution, modernism in art was a period characterized by rapid change, technology, and experimentation. Dr. Meler will examine how modernism unfolded in art, and explain the major movements and artists working during this vast, exciting time.

Discussing Thurgood and the Depiction of Race in TheatreCathie McClellan, Associate Professor and Chair of Theatre Arts

2/13, 14 and 15Audience members will engage in a conversation about the portrayal of race on stage. As a point of reference for the talk, Professor McClellan, will use the play, Thurgood, which was written by George Stevens and premiered in 2006 with James Earl Jones as the main character, and then on Broadway in 2008, with Laurence Fishburne in the title role. Thurgood will be performed at Pacific’s Long Theatre on Saturday, February 18 at 2pm. Contact Long Theatre for more info and ticket prices.

2/20, 21 and 22 Neurogenesis, i.e., building new brain cells is possible at any age. Research shows that the proper kind of brain and body exercises have profound effects on the way we age. Physical exercise is not only important for our body’s health it also helps our brain stay sharp. Dr. Oza will present the latest research along with exercises for brain and body fitness.

2/27, 28 and 3/1 We take for granted the realistic sounds that accompany the action in our favorite films, but it takes an entire army of sound specialists to create the soundscapes that help us imagine a space ship, a prehistoric monster or a pulse-pounding fight to the finish. Starting with the original King Kong and coming up through Indiana Jones to the 21st century sound wizardry of Pixar’s Wall-E, we’ll take a look and listen at how sounds are created and designed to bring audience members inside the action, adventure and emotions that help make the film going experience one of the most enjoyable forms of entertainment.

3/27, 28 and 29The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is the crossroads linking California’s largest rivers, the west coast’s largest estuary, San Francisco Bay, and one of the world’s largest and most complex water management systems. Always a dynamic landscape, over the last 150 years the Delta’s mosaic of tidal and freshwater marshes, riparian woodlands and seasonal ponds has been transformed by levees, land reclamation, dredging, dams, water diversions, agriculture and urbanization into a huge network of interconnected river channels, sloughs, canals and islands. We’ll explore the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta through a pictorial journey.

4/10, 11 and 12Mike Wurtz will use artistic images from John Muir’s journals, letters, drawings, and manuscripts that are curated at Pacific to share some of the naturalist’s gripping near-death adventures – such as the time he experienced an earthquake in Yosemite Valley. We will also examine how Muir used his masterful observational skills to study, promote, and protect our natural places.

In 2012, Liz began writing a novel about French resistance activities in Carpentras, a town in the northern Provence of France. The book, The Bitterest Wine, started out as a casual curiosity about incidents she saw mentioned on various World War II monuments in and around Carpentras and grew into a 500 page novel intertwined with vignettes about famous writers such as Albert Camus, Samuel Beckett and Andre Malraux. Liz will lead a conversation on how she came to write this historical fiction novel, how she conducted her interviews and research, and what she learned about events leading up to the liberation of southern France in August 1944. Guests are invited to a book signing reception following the talk.

Muir Transcription Project, Volunteers NeededThe University Library’s Holt-Atherton Archives and Special Collections is seeking volunteers to assist in transcribing John Muir digitized journals. Get inside the head of this great naturalist and help make Muir's thoughts more available to researchers and the public. Volunteers can transcribe an entire journal or even just a single page. Transcribing even one or two pages increases the discoverability for historians, Muir enthusiasts, students, or anyone searching the internet. Registered OLLI Members are welcome to participate. The benefits of practicing Qigong are improved overall health, improved flexibility, and improved oxygen intake from the breathing that is a part of the exercises. The exercises are based on Yang Tai Chi Chuan and are easy to learn. Eighty percent of the class session is performed seated. The meditation, stretches, and one part of the Qigong are performed while seated. There is a fifteen minute session of standing Qigong. Students say they are more relaxed, energized and have an overall feeling of wellness after the class sessions.

Thu 2/16 1-2:30pm Cheese CentralDutch for “rice table,” rijsttafel (“ryst-tah-fell”) is a by-product of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia, which, if we count the days of the Dutch East India Company, stretched for more than three centuries, formally concluding in 1949. When the Dutch returned home, they brought with them the practice of serving many small Indonesian dishes, revolving around rice. Not spicy, and without out using any unusual ingredients, our modern-day rijsttafel is the same exact idea, and we will present a simple, stream-lined Rijsttafel party to liven up the dreary late winter days! Mokelumne River Fish Hatchery Self-Guided TourXXXXX $10 Registration required

Just downstream of Camanche Reservoir, Mokelumne River Hatchery raises Chinook salmon and steelhead for release to the Mokelumne River. Follow the fish trail to see all the hatchery highlights: the Mokelumne River, the fish ladder, the hatchery building, and the raceways. Fish food is available for visitors to feed the salmon and steelhead in the raceways. During the spring, visitors can watch tagging season in process. Ride shares will be coordinated through OLLI office.

Downtown Walking TourXXXX $5 Registration required

Enjoy a 1 ½ hour architectural walking tour of downtown Stockton with your host and guide, Professor and Co-Chair of Art and Graphic Design Daniel Kasser. Tour will include stops and conversation at some of Stockton’s most significant downtown landmarks – Federal Building, Medico-Dental Building, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, S.H. Kress Building, Cort Tower and California Building, Sperry Building, Tretheway, Tudor Apartments, Weber School, and Church of Christ Scientist. Tour will begin at the Federal Building, 401 N San Joaquin Street. All are welcome to attend a no-host lunch downtown sites following the tour.

Additionally, the university is the curator of a significant art collection donated by the Powell family. Until 1977, groundwater was the sole source of domestic water until a surface water supply was established for the Stockton Metropolitan area with nearby reservoirs supplying about 60 percent of the area’s water. With a need to protect existing groundwater sources, increase water reliability and provide for future planned growth, the City embarked on the Delta Water Supply Project. Learn more about this project and process on this guided tour.

Hear the history of Elkhorn Slough, a sanctuary for marine wildlife from an informative tour guide. Afterwards, enjoy a no host lunch at the famous Phil’s Fish Market and Eatery. In the afternoon, visit the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Reserve Visitor’s Center to hear more about the sloughs’ history and view habitats of the wildlife that live in this beautiful inlet.
