Key facts
• Oliver Cromwell was born on the 25th April 1599 and he died on the
3rd September 1658
• Oliver Cromwell was an English military and political leader
• He became a member of parliament for Huntingdon in the
Parliament of 1628-1629
• Civil War broke out between Charles I and Parliament in 1642

• Oliver Cromwell helped to overthrow King Charles II
• Although Cromwell did not have a lot of military experience – he
created and led a superb force of cavalry, “the Ironsides”

• He convinced parliament to establish a professional army – “The
New Model Army” in 1645
• He allowed Jewish people to stay in England for the first time in
almost 400 years

• In 1647, he banned Christmas and other religious holidays
• He died in 1658 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, London
• A collection of his books, paintings and medals are on display in
the Museum of London
