The OLIGER MB lineage has no proven relationship to the principal OLIGER M family in this composite history, but a correlation is quite possible. Considerable effort, time and money have been put into this pursuit; so I would be remiss to overlook including it. -- Loren M. MB JOHN OLIGER There is good reason to believe this man was the father of children listed on the following pages -- there is a remote possibility he was not. His position in this history is conjectured from the fact he 1) was listed very near the locations of the following early Oligers in the 1850 U.S. Population Census of Indiana, 2) had the same unusual last name, 3) was shown as having come from France, and 4) was obviously of an earlier generation than they were. That same census in 1860 listed the surname as Oleyare that may be a corruption of the French pronunciation "Ola-sha". He did not appear in the 1870 census in that Indiana region. He was born in France in 1787 and married Anna Marie ? (1mb), born in 1790. He apparently bought land in Ripley County, IN 8/9/1851 and again 8/25/1857. In the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Cincinnati, OH there was an Anna M. Oliger (2mb) shown living with a George Trimbar (3mb) family. George was born in Germany in 1806. Anna was shown as John's wife in Indiana and was probably closely related to George (his sister, sister-in-law, or mother-in-law). MB1 KATHERINE OLIGER b. in 1817 in Lorraine, France d. 1/16/1892 in Greensburg, IN m. 8/20/1835 in Holy Trinity Church in Cincinnati, OH to Johannes Burst (aka John Burst) (4mb), born in 1810 in Baden, Germany and died 3/24/1892 in Decatur County, IN. Katherine and Johannes were buried, along with their granddaughter, Lillie Koelsch MB111, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church cemetery in Greensburg, IN. His gravestone lists his year of birth as 1812. Her stone lists her name as “K. Burst” and year of birth as 1818. He probably went to Cincinnati, OH after a brief stop in Pittsburgh, PA ca. 1832. His brother, Casimer Basilius Burst (6mb), most likely came from France about that same time.

OLIGER – page 2 He was a laborer and moved to Ripley County, IN ca. 1849. Family legend says she was a lady-in-waiting in the French court where she met John, an illegitimate son of a Hapsburg who was given a commission in the Prussian Army in lieu of Hapsburg family recognition. He was said to look just like a Hapsburg and to have been stationed as a palace guard when he met Katherine. They fell in love and escaped to the United States, perhaps under assumed names. Legend also says the queen gave her a pin and gold earrings as a wedding present, but they were traded many years later by a young Burst son and lost. (Research by Carlos Dannacher MB18211 of church records in Cincinnati, OH indicates the validity of these legends is highly questionable.) She apparently was petite and had a dark complexion. They may have returned to Cincinnati, OH for a short time ca. 1859 and then moved back to Greensburg, IN to live with their daughter, Teresa Dannacher (maiden name Teresa Burst) MB18 and her husband, Carlos Dannacher (181mb), who owned a hotel there. His father was Anton Burst (448mb), a mayor, born in Gamshurst, Baden, Germany (where he, his wife, mother and father were also born and died) in 7/1788. He married Hedwig Volz (194mb), born 2/16/1786 and died 9/16/1831. His grandfather was Xavier Burst (449mb), a farmer born 11/19/1758 and died 7/9/1822 who married Katherine Bechtel (maiden name Katherine Lücke) (252mb), born 11/16/1751 and died 1/13/1829 (both in Gamshurst, Germany). Johannes probably had the following brothers:

1) Wilhelm Burst (7mb), born in Gamshurst, Baden, Germany 5/25/1825 and died 9/26/1911. He is believed to have immigrated to Ripley County, IN in 5/1847. His wife was Magdalena Hunt (8mb), born in Alsace-Lorraine, France 7/19/1823 and died 8/8/1891. Their children were:

a) Ignasius Burst (9mb), born in Baden, Germany in 1848; b) Joseph Burst (10mb), born in Indiana in 1853; c) Nicholas Burst (11mb), born in Indiana in 1856; and d) Sebastian Burst (16mb), born in Indiana 11/25/1859 and died in 1945. He married Emma Schmitt

(17mb), died in 1901. Sebastian and Emma’s children were:

(1) Joseph Burst (18mb), died at age 47 years; (2) John Burst (19mb), died at 15 months; (3) Mary Burst (20mb), married John Jonas (21mb); (4) William Burst (22mb), died at age 60 years; (5) Frank Burst (23mb); (6) Eleanor Burst (24mb), born in 1900 and married Elmer J. Wallpe (25mb);

(7) Magdelena Burst (26mb), born in Indiana in 1863; and (8) Theresa Burst (aka Sister Rosina) (27mb), born in Indiana in 1869 and died in 1941. She was a

Franciscan nun. 2) Casimer Basilius Burst (6mb), born in 1821 in Baden, Germany. He was married to Magdalena Koch (28mb), born in 1826 in Baden, Germany and died in 1876. He was a member of St. John's Church in Cincinnati, OH in 1863 and apparently died 7/26/1866. He left Le Havre, France in 6/1846. Casimer and Magdalena’s children were: a) Martha Burst (29mb), born in 1844 in Baden, Germany; b) Theresa Burst (30mb), born in 1848 in Ohio; and c) Catherine Burst (31mb), born in 2/1850 in Ohio and died 8/13/1880 in Cincinnati, OH. She married Bernard Stecher (33mb) and had five children:

(1) William Stecher (34mb); (2) Theresa Stecher (35mb); (3) Gus Stecher (August Stecher ?) (36mb) who never married;

d) Barbara Burst (374mb), born in 1853; e) Nicholas Burst (375mb), born in 1855; f) Mary Burst (376mb), born in 1857; g) Francis Burst (377mb), born in 1860; and h) Anthony Michael Burst (378mb), born in Napoleon, IN 6/23/1862 and married Elizabeth Amborn (13mb). He died in an accident at his brother's (Nicholas Burst MB14) barrel stave in St. Meinrad, IN when a governor blew off an engine, hitting him in the head and apparently taking part of his brain. She moved around Indiana and then settled in Henderson to live with her uncle, Joseph Burst (10mb ?), and worked in a cotton mill there where she met her future husband. He was the son of a wealthy Alabama family who lost everything in the Civil War. Joseph became a sheepherder to raise money to complete his education as a dentist at the University of Chicago and then practiced in Brady, TX until he lost sight in one eye. He subsequently went to Henderson, KY (where he had three brothers) to build and run a general store, and met Harriet there. It is possible her mother was born in Germany in 1797 and that Barbara had a brother, Nicholas Paul (52mb) and sister, Catherine Paul (53mb). Apparently he arrived in Cincinnati, OH directly from France in late 1836 and worked as a laborer at the same place as his brother-in-law, John Burst (4mb). By 1843, these same two men had joined their brother, Andrew Oliger MB4, first in working together in the latter's tavern in Cincinnati (located at the corner of Vine and Northern Row) and then going with him in a wagon train (possibly along with other relatives) to Indiana in 1849. Both Nicolas and Andrew bought land in Ripley County, IN in 1837 at the Jeffersonville, IN land office. Family legend says he and his brother came to the United States to escape the military in Germany (Alsace-Lorraine region of France under German rule?) and that an aunt coming over with them died in passage. In 1832, he (age 19), Anna Marie Oliger (2mb), wife of John Oliger MB, (age 42 years), Catherine Oliger MB1 (age 15 years) and Magdalena Oliger MB2 (age 18 years) came to the United States through the port of Baltimore and apparently went directly to Cincinnati, OH where they probably lived outside the city limits until 1839. It is possible John Oliger MB was already in or near Cincinnati preparing for the family's arrival. He and his brother, Nicholas Oliger MB3, bought land in Ripley County, IN through the Jeffersonville, IN land office by 1837. In 1842 he started a grocery at the corner of Vine and Northern Row in the "Over-the-Rhine District” of Cincinnati, OH. Apparently Johannes Burst (4mb) also worked there, as he moved to that same corner. By 1843 he owned Vine Street Tavern at the grocery location where his brother, Nicholas Oliger MB3, and Johannes's brother, Casimer Burst (6mb), also worked. In 1849 he, his brother Nicholas Oliger MB3 and his brother-in-law Johannes Burst (4mb) (and possibly other relatives) set out by wagon train for Indiana. The passenger list of the Hogarth (which arrived in New Orleans, LA 6/10/1831 from the port of embarkation of Le Havre, France) indicated one H. Olliger (193mb), a female aged 20 years born in France, died in passage. It is possible she was the aunt who allegedly died during the voyage, as per family legend. There were no other known family members aboard that vessel. He was probably buried in Connersville, IN. The marriage was witnessed by Mary’s brother, George Oliger MB42 and Barbara Oliger (MB34 ?) (possibly Barbara Oliger (1ma), wife of Benedict Oliger MA, often known as Babal Oliger from the other non-Knowles family-related Oliger history contained within the composite Knowles/Kauffman histories). Mary was baptized in Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Cincinnati, OH 8/8/1841.
