• After 12-straight games on the road to start 2016, Ole Miss returns home for a 16-game homestand beginning this weekend with the Ole Miss Classic.• The Rebels open tournament play Friday against Northern Iowa at 4 p.m., and close the day against Stephen. F. Austin at 6:30 p.m. Ole Miss will play UTSA on Saturday, with the final two opponents/times TBD pending results.• In the next three weeks, Ole Miss will play more than half of its home slate with two home tournaments (Ole Miss Classic, Red & Blue Classic) and the start of SEC play against Missouri (March 11-13).• The Rebels rank fourth in the SEC in hits (102), third in ABs (315), and third in stolen bases (25). The Rebel pitching staff is fourth in opposing batting average (.175), while the defense’s .973 fielding % is fourth overall.• Two true freshman currently lead all Ole Miss hitters in shortstop Hailey Lunderman and utility player Ashton Lampton. Lunderman’s .462 average and team-leading 18 hits paces the club, while Lampton’s 11 RBI and .800 slugging is first among all Rebels.• Ole Miss is 14-5 in home openers, outscoring its opponents 107-50 in those contests.• Through just 12 games, every player on the 24-person roster -- including all 11 newcomers -- has played in at least one game. SCOUTING REPORT• Northern Iowa enters the weekend 8-3 coming off tournament play in Tempe, Arizona last weekend. The Panthers went 4-1 on the weekend, picking up wins over Montana (7-1), Michigan State (13-9, 10-4) and Memphis (5-2). As a team the Panthers are hitting .313 on the year, led by Chelsea Ross’ .357 clip with two long balls and a team high 13 RBI. Samantha Olson is hitting .462 on the year with just 13 at-bats. Ross is also the team’s leading pitcher at 2-0 on the year with a 2.75 ERA in six starts. She’s allowed 11 earned runs and struck out 25 hitters in 25 innings. As a team UNI has a 3.13 ERA, with Alyssa Buchanan 4-1 on the year in four starts and a 1.96 ERA.• Stephen F. Austin takes a 3-7 record into the Ole Miss Classic, coming off play at the Citrus Classic last week end in Orlando. The Lumberjacks’ only three wins on the year have come against Prairie View A&M, Grambling State and ULM. As a team SFA hits just .208, led by Lindsay Campbell’s .310 clip. Brittany Lewis leads the club in RBI with eight. Three different Lumberjacks’ pitchers have split the starts thus far, with Hannah Welch owning the best ERA at 3.29 with a 0-1 record in 13.2 IP. Callee Guffey is 1-1 on the year with a 3.86 ERA in three starts, while Makayla Sikes is 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA.• The UTSA Roadrunners sit at .500 on the year heading into the weekend, coming off its home tournament in San Antonio last weekend. The Roadrunners’ wins thus far have been over San Diego State, Canisius, North Dakota and Virginia. As a team UTSA is hitting .249 led by Alyssa Cummings’ .273 clip. Bailee Baldwin leads the club in RBI with seven, while as a team the Roadrunners have hit nine home runs on the young season. Chelsea Parker has started half the games in the circle for UTSA with a 2.57 ERA and 3-2 record.

LONG TRIPS AWAIT THE REBSOf course, with a 4,000-mile trip to Hawaii, it’s easily the longest trip for any team, despite the flight there (and destination) that makes it seem not so bad. But for the Rebels, it’s not just the long trip across the country to Hawaii. Add in four other trips (by bus) that exceed at least six hours and the travel schedule becomes extensive.

In all, Ole Miss will travel approximately 7,243 miles one way for its 2016 games away from home. Add the trips back to Oxford and it’s nearly 15,000 miles roundtrip for 27 road games.

New Faces On StaffHead coach Mike Smith, in his second year at the helm of the program, had a busy offseason putting together his coaching staff heading into 2016. Now on staff are two new faces, and one familiar face in a different role.

Former MLB coach, Ruben Felix, the Rebels’ volunteer assistant and camp coordinator for the 2015 season, was promoted to full-time assistant coach in the summer of 2015. Taryne Mowatt, a two-time national champion and two-time ESPY award winner, joined the staff last summer as the team’s pitching coach. Smith also added former Georgia Bulldog Katie Rietkovich as the program’s new volunteer assistant and camp coordinator.

Career Records To Watch ForEntering the 2016 campaign, various Rebels are nearing record marks in eight different offensive categories and four pitching categories. A complete list of records can be found on pages 36-40, with records of note are below. • Junior Miranda Strother is third all-time in career batting average, currently at .328; she also ranks fourth in slugging percentage (.510) and fifth in on-base percentage (.401).• Senior Melina Preciado currently has five triples in her career, three shy of tying the all-time record.• Senior Madi Osias enters the season with 17 career home runs, one shy of tying for fifth place; she also needs just 10 RBI to break into the top-10 career RBI list. In the circle, her 21 wins are 10th most, two away from ninth and six away from sixth; her 84 career appearances also rank eighth, 17 away from the top-five.• Senior Haley Culley is just eight runs away (77) from breaking into the top-10 runs scored list; she’s also ninth in stolen bases with 24.• Sophomore Elantra Cox has 34 stolen bases after just one year of competition, seventh all-time.

Rebels Host Two Home Tournaments In 2016Ole Miss hosts two home tournaments for the first time since the 2003 campaign and third time overall with the Ole Miss Classic (Feb. 26-28) and Red & Blue Classic (March 4-6). The Rebels will welcome UTSA, Stephen F. Austin and Northern Iowa to Oxford for the first home games of 2016, before hosting Penn State, Belmont and UMASS a week later in the Red & Blue Classic.

The Rebels also hosted back-to-back home tournaments in 2003 with the Rebel/Easton Invitational (Nicholls State, Jacksonville State) and the Ole Miss Snowfall Classic (Central Connecticut, Northern Illinois, Drake, Evans-ville). In 2001, Ole Miss hosted the Ole Miss Softball Classic (UT-Martin, Nicholls State) and the Rebel/Easton Invitational (Evansville, Southwest Missouri State, Samford).

11 New Players On RosterNearly half of the players on the 2016 roster are new to the squad, including five transfers and six true freshmen. Head coach Mike Smith took in two players from his former school, Dakota Matiko and Bry Castro. Kennedy Cline, a freshman outfielder, is in her first year after originally signing with Smith at McNeese State. Smith also added junior college all-American Raven Campos, Shelton State (Ala.) transfer Alyssa Clayton, as well as Salt Lake CC transfer Elisha Jahnke.

Pitcher Krista Jacobs (Magnolia, Texas), catcher Sarah Van Schaik (Petal, Miss.), infielder Hailey Lunderman (Philadelphia, Miss.), outfielder Kylan Becker (Miami, Fla.) and utility player Ashton Lampton (Decatur, Miss.) will all be suiting up in a college uniform for the first time in 2016.

A Story Of Friendship For Two Cali Girls Playing Softball In MississippiSeniors Madi Osias (Tustin, California) and Natalie Martinez (Chino Hills, California) spent last summer unlike most college students. The duo -- also known as the Mississippi Mermaids -- took advantage of a unique op-portunity to study abroad.

Martinez took a course in traveling photography, while Osias studied international marketing. Each of the classes took up three weeks of their six total overseas, and included sight-seeing stops in Florence, Italy; Santorini, Greece; Barelona and Ibiza, Spain; Paris and London. Martinez will graduate in May with a B.A. in Journalism and a minor in art, while Osias will earn her B.B.A. in Managerial Finance in May.

Ole Miss Picked 12th In SEC Preseason PollIn a vote of the Southeastern Conference’s 13 head coaches, the Ole Miss Softball team was picked to finish 12th in the preseason poll.

Florida, the two-time defending National Champion, was chosen to win the 2016 SEC title. LSU, Auburn, Alabama and Tennessee rounded out the top five in the preseason poll. Points for the poll were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 basis. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. SEC SlateThe Rebels’ 2016 conference slate includes 7-of-8 weekend series versus teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament, including home weekends against Women’s College World Series Champion Florida, and WCWS participant Tennessee.

Ole Miss opens SEC play at home with NCAA Super Regional team Missouri (March 11-13), before traveling to Super Regional squad Kentucky (March 18-20). The league grind continues two weeks later with a road series at NCAA Regional team Mississippi State, before returning home to host the national champion Florida Gators April 8-10.

The Rebels are right back on the road, April 15-17, at NCAA Regional club South Carolina, before playing its only league series against a non-NCAA team in Arkansas (April 22-24). A trip to NCAA Super Regional team Georgia closes the league road schedule, before the Rebels host WCWS team Tennessee May 6-8 to conclude the regular season.

No Easy Road For Rebels In 2016Nearly half of the Rebels’ games in 2016 will be contests against teams who played in the NCAA Tournament a season ago. With seven of the eight SEC weekend series’ versus NCAA Tournament teams, combined with two more non-conference matchups versus postseason teams, Ole Miss will play 23 games against nine different NCAA qualifying teams.

Seven of Ole Miss’ 2016 opponents appeared in the NFCA Top-25 Preseason Poll, including defending WCWS Champion and No. 1 Florida, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 12 Georgia, No. 15 Missouri and No. 18 Kentucky. Mississippi State and UAB also received votes.

Senior Alyssa Invergo On Career Path To Optometry Senior second baseman Alyssa Invergo, who sat out the 2013 season due to injury, will finish her college softball career in 2016 despite having played just two full seasons. A junior on the field, Invergo’s senior sta-tus in the classroom means she will forgo her last eligibility year to begin Optomery school in Memphis, Tenn.

2015 Rebels Set Offensive Marks; Majority of Production Returning In ‘16Positive results were apparent quick in just one season under head coach Mike Smith. In addition to the 30-win season, the Rebels put up a record-breaking season offensively, and were just a double shy from completely rewriting the record books.• Ole Miss scored 303 runs, shattering the previous mark of 250 runs in 2010.• The 2015 Rebels tallied 444 total hits, also shattering the previous mark of 396 in 2014.• The Rebels tallied a team batting average of .309, besting the old record of .291 set in 2010.• Ole Miss’ 67 doubles -- breaking the previous mark of 62 in 1997 -- was one shy of a total rewrite of the record books.• The Rebels hit a school record 13 triples in 2015, besting the previous mark of 11 triples set in 2010.• Ole Miss hit 48 home runs in 2015, also setting a new mark for home runs in program history (37 - 2007).• The Rebels drove in 272 runs as a team, breaking the previous record of 218 in 2010.• Ole Miss totaled nearly 100 more total bases in 2015 than its previous season record of 596, with 676 in ‘16.• The 168 walks were the most in a season, breaking the 2014 record of 150.• The Rebels stole 90 bases successfully after only attempting 60 steals in 2014. Nine Rebels Make Their Debut In HawaiiEntering the 2016 season, 11 of the 24 players on the Rebels’ roster were new to the team. Two weeks ago in Hawaii, nine of them made their Ole Miss debut. Four of the nine made their collegiate debuts, while five others played in an Ole Miss uniform for the first time after transferring from other schools across the country.

Freshmen Hailey Lunderman and Kylan Becker both started all five games for the Rebels at shortstop and in the outfield, respectively. Transfer Dakota Matiko drew three starts at third base, while freshman catcher Sarah Van Schaik started three contests. JUCO transfer Raven Campos appeared in four games and delivered the walk-off 2-run home run in the 10-2, run-rule victory over St. Mary’s, while McNeese State transfer Bry Castro drew two starts and played in four games.

True freshman Ashton Lampton played in all five games, delivering the game-winning RBI single in extra innings over Hawaii in the Paradise Classic Championship. Sophomore transfer Elisha Jahnke was strong in her first Division I out-ing with two strikeouts, as was JUCO transfer Alyssa Clayton, who earned all-tournament honors after going 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 12.1 IP.

Rebels Win Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic ChampionshipAfter going 2-0 in the first two games of the year, Hawaii handed the Rebels their first loss, 3-0, in game three of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic. But, Ole Miss surged back in day three, run-ruling St. Mary’s, 10-2, before going on defeat host Hawaii, 6-5, in come-from-behind fashion in extra innings.

Martinez Named Paradise Classic MVP; Clayton, Lunderman, Schneider Named All-TourneySenior DP Natalie Martinez earned Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic MVP honors after hitting .500 in Ha-waii with two doubles and seven RBI. She slugged at a clip of .643 to lead the Rebels to the tournament championship.

JUCO transfer Alyssa Clayton also earned all-tournament honors after throwing a three-hitter in her Division I debut, before going on to finish the event 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 12.1 innings. Sophomore Alex Schneider earned a place on the all-tournament team after hitting .400 with five RBI, and the home run that sent the championship game to extra innings vs. Hawaii. Freshman Hailey Lunderman had a stellar defensive week at shortstop, and also led the team in hits with eight in her collegiate debut.

Grand Slam? No Problem For Strother Through One Game In 2016It didn’t take long for the Rebels to hit their first grand slam of the season, as junior Miranda Strother delivered in game one vs. UMKC. After the Rebels loaded the bases to begin the frame, Strother drilled a ball to straighaway center, helping her squad to a season-opening, 5-4 victory over the Kangaroos.

Rebels Off To Best 10-Game Start In School HistoryOle Miss has gone 4-1 in each of its two tournaments to open the season (Paradise Classic/Troy Classic), and went 8-2 through 10 games, the best start in program history. The Rebels’ best 10-game start prior to 2016 was a 7-3 mark set in 1999 and again in 2002.

Ole Miss returns home for three-straight weekends at the Ole Miss Softball Complex looking to build on the 9-3 mark entering home tournament play.

Clayton On Cruise Control In First D-I SeasonJunior college transfer Alyssa Clayton has been everything the Rebels needed and more through the first two weekends of play. In six appearances (all starts), the Section, Alabama native is 3-1 on the young season with a 2.08 ERA in 33.2 innings. She’s allowed just 23 hits, 10 runs and struck out 17 hitters.

In Wednesday’s first game against Southern Miss, Clayton carried a perfect game into the sixth inning. She still kept the no-hitter in tact after issuing a 2-out walk, but a double on the ensuing bat drove home a run breaking the scoreless tie. The Golden Eagles went on to get another hit and score once more, handing Clayton the unfortunate loss despite pitching a gem for a majority of the contest.

She’s twice went the distance with just three hits allowed; first against St. Mary’s (2/12) in her Ole Miss debut, before going the distance in the Rebels’ run-rule victory over Eastern Illinois (2/21). She also didn’t allow a single run in both of those outings and allowed a combined three runs in two of the other starts.

Head Coach Mike SmithWhen Mike Smith was named the fifth head coach of the Ole Miss softball program on May 29, 2014, he brought with him a wealth of experience across all levels of collegiate softball and a desire to make the Rebels a competitive program immediately.

Smith came up aces in his first season at the helm of the program, tying the school record for wins in a season and putting an offense on the field that rewrote the record books. The Rebels set every offensive record for a season, including batting average, runs scored, RBI, home runs, triples, walks, steals and both on base percentage and slugging percentage. Ole Miss also tied the school record for doubles in his first season.

Under his direction in year one, the Rebels advanced to the SEC Tournament for only the fourth time in school history and the first time since the 2008 season. The 30-wins tied the mark for wins in a year set in 2005 and gave Smith a winning record in his first year. Ole Miss also doubled its win total in Southeastern Conference play, tallying six wins which equaled the total number of conference wins in the previous two seasons combined.

Smith brought the Rebels a series win over a nationally-ranked foe for the first time since the 2009 season when his team rallied to take both games of a doubleheader against archrival Mississippi State. He then took his team on the road and posted a series sweep in SEC play for the first time since the 2012 season and first road sweep in conference play since the 2005 season at Arkansas.

He also coached outfielder Elantra Cox to Freshman All-SEC honors as she finished the regular season fourth in steals and seventh in the career record books with 30 in her debut campaign.

Smith came to Ole Miss after he led the McNeese State softball program to three-straight 30-plus win seasons in his three years with the Cowgirls.

He led McNeese State to back-to-back Southland Confer-ence regular season championships in 2013 and 2014, its first since 1994, brought 16 years of head coaching experience to Oxford and a career record of 748-224. He was named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2014.

The Cowgirls went 40-17 during the regular season in 2014, a school record for wins in a season, and posted a 3-1 record against Southeastern Conference opponents Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M. The Cowgirls finished the season with an RPI ranking of No. 46 and won the South-land Conference regular season title by 4.5 games with a 20-6 record.

In addition to Smith being named SLC Coach of the Year in 2014, the Cowgirls also had the conference’s player of the year, hitter of the year and pitcher of the year. In all, the Cowgirls had nine players named to either the SLC first, second, third or honorable mention teams.

Under Smith’s tutelage, the Cowgirls had two players named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-South Region team in outfielder Alanna DiVittorio and pitcher Jamie Allred. DiVittorio, the Southland Conference player and hitter of the year, was the first player in program history to earn first team all-region honors. As a senior in 2014, DiVit-torio broke a combined nine school and conference records.

Allred, the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year, earned second team all-region honors. She finished 2014 with a school-record 27 wins, as well as 10 shutouts.

Both players earned first team All-SLC honors this season and were each Capital One Academic All-District selections. DiVittorio was also named to the Capital One Academic All-America team, becoming just the second player in program history to earn the distinction.

In 2013, his second season with McNeese State, Smith had five players named to the All-SLC team and four named to the All-SLC Academic Team. On the field, the Cowgirls tied a then-program record with 38 wins, going 38-13.

In his first season with McNeese State in 2012, Smith led the Cowgirls to a 3-1 win over Arizona State, the defending national champions and preseason No. 1 team in the country at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona. McNeese State went on to go 34-21 that season.

Prior to McNeese State, Smith coached for eight seasons at California Baptist where he won the NAIA National Champi-onship in 2009, and finished in the top-six in the country all eight years, including seven years finishing inside the top-four. The Lancers won their conference championship and advanced to the NAIA World Series all eight years, and won 60 or more games in each of Smith’s final four seasons, concluding with a school-record 66 wins in 2011.

Smith was the interim head coach at UC Riverside prior to his time at California Baptist, and in the four years prior to that he served as head coach at Biola, where he won one league title, had a 50-win season and a 10th-place finish at the NAIA World Series.In 2011, he served as the head coach of the USA team that played in the Prague International Softball Championships.

A graduate of The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, Califor-nia, Smith was a two-time all-district pitcher on the college baseball team and went on to play in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, reaching the Class AA level. He also played for a number of independent league teams from 1994 to 2001.

Smith was a Western Baseball League Pitcher of the Year with the Mission Viejo (Calif.) team in both 1997 and 1998, and in 2000 was the MVP of the WBL championship series with the St. George team.

Smith also served as a pitching coach for the Biola baseball team from 1996-1998, and was a teacher and coach at Heritage Christian School in Anaheim, California, from 1993-96, where he was head coach for baseball and boys and girls basketball teams, an assistant coach in football and an assistant athletic director.

A San Diego native, Smith and his wife, Ellen, have two children, Ashlee and Tyler.
