Trophy Fish Printing

The More Elegant TaxidermyJapaneseJapanese fish printing developed centuries ago as a way to record prized fish catches before photography was invented. Today, artist Sandy Reyes practices the same techniques to create a beautiful fish trophy print. Original prints on linen are available for purchase in many different species, or she will make a custom print from the fish you catch. Finally, a fish trophy you won’t mind staring back at you!

It’s back to school for the Fall issue, but

surprise!...we are taking you back to the

beach. Our Luxury Living home is a high-

rise condo at Los Corales in the Shores

neighborhood of South Padre Island. Right

on the beach, the condo is elegantly designed

and decorated with a comfortable modern

look and a lot of white, off-white, and sand

tones. Modern art and the beautiful water

from the picture window view of the Gulf of

Mexico add the color. Fall is wonderful on

the beach, calm seas and light breezes add to

the interior tranquility and softness of this

luxury home.

Finally, a little mention for our “Gallery

Guide” and the artists and frame shops

you’ll find there. We feature three

exceptional framing stores in our Valley, all

catering to loyal customers and each offering

Winter conjures up lots of images of

snuggling, huddling, and cuddling. It may

also bring thoughts of ski vacations in

Colorado where drinking hot toddies in the

lodge in front of a massive stone fireplace

with burning wood logs is a favorite pastime.

Cuddling in front of a warm fireplace is

something all of us will be able to enjoy,

thanks to our winter “Product Showcase”

article. We bring you hanging fireplaces,

free standing fireplaces, gas and electric

fireplaces, fireplaces that are an efficient and

clean heat source, fireplaces your friends will

toast in front of and fireplaces your family

will love to gather around.

Think about all the countertop surfaces

throughout your home. That adds up to a

lot of space! With a plethora of materials

to choose from, and an unending choice of

color, countertops should be a major concern

outstanding craftsmanship and custom

framing.

“Decorating With” features Rugs and

Carpets. Not the stuffy old 70’s concept

of wall to wall carpet, in all the same

color, that literally smothered your whole

home, including the stairs. Not the carpet

that slowly pulled off the metal tack strips

allowing for the occasional bare footed

scream as a heel or toe landed in the wrong

place. Instead, today’s options for Rugs

and Carpets can almost be considered art:

functional art filled with pattern, color, and

fiber choices ranging from silk to leather. So

treat your floors and your feet to some soft

luxury and add another dimension to your

interior décor.

when it comes to the overall design and

planning of your space. Natural granites

come in every color of the rainbow, from

green river rock with bold pattern, to muted

metallic with bits of gold and delicately

veined with bronze ribbons. Then there

are the man-made “super” materials such

as silestone. Bright, vivid, uniform color can

make a bold statement. There are

even glass countertops and translucent

quartz surfaces.

Our Fabulous Spaces, Public Places feature is

bringing you where no luxury magazine has

gone before…to the offices of a McAllen air

conditioning company. We figured we would

conclude our journey here because you are

probably overheating from too much time

next to the fireplace. Banda Lucas Design

Group from Brownsville has designed luxury

FEDERALSTYLEA Valley home gets the Federal treatment, a style influenced by European and Greek design, but is uniquely American. WRITTEN BY: KATHERINE SCALES, INTERIOR DESIGNER

12 olé decor FALL 2011

Page 15: Ole Decor - Fall 2011

The nicest complement any professional

decorator can receive is to have a

previous client call for their next project

or refer you to others. A Valley client I had worked

with previously had referred me to other clients,

but when she called me to help remodel her latest

home, I was honored. It was a joy to reacquaint

myself with her by working together on this

new project.

The home is decorated in a stately Federal style-

-think Thomas Jefferson and imagine the oval

office. The Federal style developed after the civil

war and, although it is influenced by European and

Greek design, it is uniquely American. Furniture

makers identified with this style are Hepplewhite

and Sheraton. The furniture style is characterized

by graceful straight lines and modest decoration.

Furniture legs are generally slender, giving it the

appearance of lightness, and its simple lines the

look of restrained elegance.

Although there are major pieces of furniture in

the Federal style, my client has developed her own

unique style. Personal style is generally the result

of personal experience and preference. Having a

desire to create a personal style for your home is

the first step. Utilizing the creative and technical

skills of professionals helps the client further define

or refine their vision. As you look at the photos

of this beautiful home, you will discover how the

efforts of the owners, the remodeling contractor,

and an interior designer bring together an eclectic

mix of furniture and accessories to define the

unique American style of the homeowners.

Taking historical styles and re-imagining them was

at the heart of Federal style. Checkerboard floors

could often be found in entryways. In this home,

the idea of the checkerboard is created by a grid of

wood planking inset with timeless Crema Marfil

marble tiles. It is the strongest visual element in the

room due to the contrasting dark wood and beige

tile. The grid is set at a 45 degree angle which

draws the eye into the room. The grid is repeated

in the coffered ceiling, although it is set at a right

angle to the walls, creating a visually

interesting contrast.

The oval dining table and chairs create a secondary

focal point in the room. Ovals were a standard in

Federal design, as I mentioned before. Although

a contemporary design, the dining set features

elements of Federal style in the carved heart shaped

chair backs, the shape of the arms and the turned

legs. The lovely sideboard is a truer example of

Federal design, with its slender turned legs. The

voluminous negative space the legs create, makes

the sideboard look like it is almost floating.

Color plays an important role in creating cohesion

in the room. The wood elements are very close

in hue and tone. The walls and ceiling are beige,

giving the room visual height. Although the floor

tiles are beige, the contrasting dark wood grounds

the room. Although Federal color schemes varied

from North to South, they typically included cream,

white, pink, coral, medium blue and black. The

coral silk drapes emphasize and pick up color from

the painting on the wall, the floral patterned chair

fabric, the Mary Rose Young rose patterned dishes

and the centerpiece. Sparkling decorative accents

such as a crystal tear drop chandelier, goblets, a

large footed bowl, a shining silver coffee and tea

service and champagne bucket add a touch of

glamour. Just a touch of black in the picture frame

and the Victorian plant stand complete the

perfect picture.

For the remodel project, the client wanted to

make some structural changes to the house. Their

contractor, Dwain Lewis and I had worked together

on various projects over the years. His objective is

to make home additions look like they have always

been a part of the existing structure.

We decided to move a wall out a few feet onto the

covered patio. This turned a nice size breakfast

room into a cozy sitting area. It is truly the heart of

the home. Several other changes were made as the

project progressed. We realized that some spaces

required more natural light. We enlarged a window

in the front bedroom, added a window over the free

standing claw foot bathtub in the master bath and

a windowed door in the master bathroom’s vanity

area. We also removed a wall between a storage

closet and pantry and made a combined home

office/butler’s pantry.

The reorganization of space required a

reorganization of the furnishings in the house.

Furnishings from the existing house were

commandeered for the new spaces. They were

carefully measured for fit. A long sofa I sold them

years earlier was cut down to fit into the client’s

study. It, along with the formal sofa, and five

chairs were reupholstered. These were all well-

made quality furniture so reupholstering was a

given. I always try to work with what my client

has, but we did add a few pieces.

My client and I are both “Valley Girls,” a fact

we both appreciate. The Valley has wonderful

resources for creating beautiful homes.

Consequently, most of the embellishments in her

home are from the Valley. The crystal chandelier

in the formal sitting area came from the old Russell

Plantation. Once I had it cleaned up and rewired,

it was beautiful. We selected original artwork by

local artists, as well as other original handmade

pieces such as a mesquite draftsman’s desk.

While shopping for new pieces in area stores, my

client would inevitably call me to get my input

when she saw something exciting at Designer’s

Showroom or Oh Kays. My job was to be sure

they fit into the space. Some of these stores carry

designer collections, and my client has built her

own collections over the years, combining classical

pieces with unique contemporary designs. The

black and white checkered pitcher by MacKenzie-

Childs in the kitchen photo is an example of

that mix of re-imagined Federal design. Another

example are the columns on the dresser in the

master bedroom. By using some of her existing

pieces, a few new pieces, and a few “found”

treasures, we ended up with a wonderful eclectic,

uncontrived space.

My client’s husband loves to work in the yard. He

put his talents to work by building a one-of-a-

kind arbor outside of the master vanity door with

antique lumber. He additionally made his mark on

the project by helping us select the new surfacing

for the beautiful Hamlin spa and pool and all

the pavers in the pool area and front walk from

Tropical Patios. He picked out the patio furniture.

He created a beautiful garden for his pet birds

and turtles.

When I get a call from someone looking for a

designer, they usually ask “what is my style?” I do

not impose my taste on my clients. My job is to

find out their taste, lifestyle, and needs and guide

them to the final product. It was a joy and pleasure

to work with this client again and make this house

their home. With her wonderful eye and heart it is

full of “joy of place,” which is my objective in all

my projects.

The idea to furnish this luxury

condominium property was conceived

during a chance encounter one Sunday

at the island’s Farmer’s Market. Property owner

and developer of The Shores, Dennis Franke, and

the owner of Designer’s Showroom, Julie Edelstein,

reached a mutually beneficial agreement. Julie

would use her resources to furnish and stage his

Los Corales property which was for sale. Dennis

would give credit to Designer’s Showroom and

Cactus Flower for their work. The goal for both

parties was to allow prospective buyers to envision

themselves enjoying the home.

Los Corales is truly a stunning property. Sitting at

the very northern edge of island developments, the

condominiums feature amazing views of both the

Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre.

Paez Development has created a luxury oasis

with well appointed interiors and, for the most

part, well thought out floor plans. Unit #801 is

on the north corner of the north building and the

views are breathtaking and panoramic. With this

kind of backdrop, designing the interior becomes

a responsibility to avoid distracting from these

magnificent vistas.

To begin the creation of Los Corales 801, Julie

Edelstein organized a design team. Two staff

designers in her Brownsville Designer’s Showroom

store, Martha Rapp and Colleen Hajrula selected

furnishings. She asked Cactus Flower’s Patricia

Hester and myself to oversee space planning and

any adjustments needed to make the space work

better. We were also given the task of creating

custom furnishings for the housekeeper’s quarters.

Martha and Colleen chose the style direction for

this project.

They wisely chose to stay with the building’s

architecture and modern style. They started with

the entrance to the condo using a simple small

console that fits the space perfectly and topped

it with a bronze sculpture and beautiful abstract

art piece. The circular pattern in the art is a great

counterbalance for the straight and spare lines of

the console. Cactus Flower added a spotlight and

the whole niche comes to life welcoming visitors

and hinting at what is to come.

Entering the social area, one’s attention is at first

completely and utterly impacted by the view. A

wall of windows presents a breathtaking panorama

from eight stories up that is impossible to ignore.

The north window in the living room provides

another amazing scene of sand dunes and waves

unimpeded by development as far as the eye can

see. Only when one has recovered from the impact

of the natural beauty right outside does the rest of

the space come into focus. This is as it should be

with the furnishings not the focal point but instead

a compliment to the stunning view.

The social area is one large space showcasing an

entirely open kitchen and large living and dining

areas. In the living area, Martha’s and Colleen’s

plan includes two large sofas properly scaled to

the space, a cocktail table, and two tub chairs.

The straight lined sofas are quality modern pieces

built by the manufacturer to last and the cream

leather upholstery is both practical and supports

the modern theme. The tub chairs are upholstered

in fabric adding an interesting texture while the

round shape contrasts linear designs of the sofas. In

addition, the tub chairs conveniently swivel to face

either the beach or the sofas for conversation. The

cocktail table is straight lined with a modern mix of

glass and dark wood and is correctly sized to pull

all the seating together into a conversation group.

Next, the designers chose a thoroughly modern and

also contemporary Italian dining table with leather

chairs. The glass table leaves pull out from the ends

of the table in what is to me a technical marvel!

With leaves extended, the table seats ten with

space to spare. Modern design is exemplified in its

straight lines as well as the mix of glass, metal and

leather. Uncomplicated and practical, sculptural

and just plain beautiful!

In modern style, accents are the place to add color,

movement, form, and texture – but not clutter. The

designers chose two large abstract art pieces and

were careful to match the scale of the pieces with

the space in which they were hung. These pieces

add a pop of color and movement and provide

focal points secondary to the beach. Using only

two grand paintings creates drama and supports

simplicity while eliminating the cluttered feel

several smaller grouped pieces might generate. On

the dining table another modern element can be

seen with the use of botanical forms repeated in

the three sleek vases; each holding a single large

tropical leaf – so easy yet so dramatic. Other

accent pieces recognize the beach location of this

home. Two column lamps completely encrusted in

shells provide soft lighting and give vertical height

to the space. A large coral bowl is a dramatic accent

for the kitchen counter. In the corner of the living

area, a contemporary tall botanical helps balance

the sofas and gives height as well. An art glass

bowl, two vases, and another small botanical on

the cocktail table were carefully chosen. Because

there are only a few decorative pieces, each choice

is important.

While the social areas are nearly pure modern style,

the bedrooms incorporate both contemporary and

transitional styles. But these rooms are still treated

in the modern way … i.e. simple, uncluttered. The

master bedroom had one challenge in that there

was no unbroken wall on which to place the bed.

Since beds are by far the largest piece of furniture in

most bedrooms, they claim the focus for the room.

Colleen and Martha wanted to use a fabulous

king bed by Caracole but the entrance door to

the bedroom was not working with the design.

In a simple solution, Cactus Flower relocated the

bedroom door creating an unencumbered wall to

feature the bed. Now the bed could be placed with

the matching night tables on either side. Before,

there would have only been room for one night

table. Although, I would call the bed contemporary

with its current style and curvy carved headboard

inserts defining the upholstery work, it certainly

compliments modern style as well. Simple

bedding in white with chocolate accents, fabulous

contemporary lamps and a comfortable chair add

finishing elements to an inviting and luxurious

master suite.

Los Corales 801 was sold within three weeks of

completion of the furnished interior. The new

owners kept most of the furnishings only making

changes to accommodate their particular family

needs. They opted for a sectional in the living area

from the same fine leather manufacturer and to

replace the king bed in bedroom three with two

queen beds in a modern style from designer Tommy

Bahama. A project well done yields great results

all around! The new owners will enjoy quality

furnishings in a premier property for many years

to come.

IN MODERN STYLE, ACCENTS ARE THE PLACE TO ADD COLOR, MOVEMENT, FORM, AND TEXTURE – BUT NOT CLUTTER.

The original Reese-Wilmond Hotel was

built in the 1920’s and operated as such

until the 1970’s when it was turned over

to the Harlingen Housing Authority and received a

significant addition.

Originally designed by the San Antonio architect

Harvey P. Smith, the current building is an ‘H’

in plan with the eastern ‘U’ comprising the

original building and the two wings done in the

70’s defining the western courtyard. This new

mixed-use development named ‘The Reese,’ was

undertaken by people who not only live and

conduct their business in Harlingen, but are

dedicated to improving it: Ms. Jo Rae Wagner

along with her son Todd Aune, his wife Katie, and

Todd’s twin brother Steve.

The developers chose the Harlingen-based

Architectural firm of Megamorphosis to breathe

new life into the neglected building. The Harlingen

theme continued through the selection of General

Contractor SpawGlass and many subcontractors

who hail from Harlingen as well. Since the

completion of the first phase of construction, there

has been enormous interest on the development

side, and this will no doubt be the ‘big bang’

catalyst downtown has needed for so long.

Early in the design process it was apparent that

it would not be feasible to undo all the less

sympathetic alterations, but a strong desire to

recapture much of the original design remained.

The renovation budget was judiciously meted

out on important upgrades like impact-rated

windows, high-insulating roof system, and high

efficiency mechanical and plumbing systems, as

well as architectural strategies to create Place and

Character. In addition to recapturing the original

sophistication, it was important to break up the

current north and south façades to reduce the

massive scale. To achieve this, several interventions

were required.

The original building retained its brick veneer and

received a new decorative laser-cut steel canopy

evoking the original wood roof rafter-tails, this

provided much needed detail for the ‘cap.’ The

fifth floor received a new cream-colored stucco

finish as a modern interpretation of the original

‘open’ top floor. The 70’s ‘blocks’ are defined as

additions by painting them red and retaining their

square fenestration. By visually separating the

two, the designers hoped to recapture some of the

integrity of the original design: by all accounts a

‘step up’ from the institutional look of the addition.

The connecting space between the two eras has

an organic mural to mark the separation while

unify the differing material palettes. Finally, the

steel mesh rooftop screen disguises mechanical

equipment and serves as another modern

interpretation of the original rooftop signage

(which read ‘Air Conditioned - Fireproof’).

At night, roof mounted up-lights transform the steel

mesh into a shimmering scrim backdrop for the

new ‘Reese’ signage.

The original first floor openings were enlarged to

their original sizes and the eastern courtyard has

been ‘re-opened’ to First Street. This small gesture

of subtracting the existing courtyard wall and

increased glazing has a larger motive: to reconnect

the building to the community by offering an

open welcoming face to the street and sidewalk.

The warm flicker of gas lighting continues from

the Courtyard to the building interior. Further

definition comes from concrete pavers and ornate

metal furniture that echoes the organic pattern of

the fencing.

The courtyard was painstakingly integrated to

the entire development by repeating materials

and visual elements like stacked-stone veneer

and painted steel scroll-work. The Courtyard is

surprisingly comfortable nearly every day and is a

great place to enjoy a drink, a meal, or even

live music.

Additional Phase One development included the

design and construction of a high-end Italian

restaurant named after Ms. Wagner’s Sicilian

ancestors (Colletti’s) on the south end of the first

floor. Colletti’s interior is open to the original

structure and building systems, all of which are

subdued with a dark ceiling paint. Deep textural

materials like dry-stack stone, integral color

concrete, and patterned concrete-tile are offset by

modern computer-cut scrollwork light-boxes that

glow warm vibrant orange and red.

The scroll motif of Colletti’s is repeated with

wrought Iron scrolled arches which help to define

the different dining areas. Venetian Plaster walls

and gas lantern lighting contribute to the warm

authentic atmosphere of the dining and bar areas.

While the dining area is characterized by elements

that bridge new and old, the restrooms are

decidedly contemporary. Patterned porcelain tile,

sleek fixtures, and frameless frosted glass doors

ensure that every aspect of Colletti’s is an event

to remember.

Grass painting is receiving a fair amount of press

lately because of the poor housing market. Many

areas of the country that have a large number of

foreclosures are seeing an increase in businesses

offering grass painting in an effort to improve the

curb appeal of vacant properties.

What is grass paint made of?

Technically, the product that is sprayed onto the

lawn is a non-toxic green dye that simply changes

the color of the grass back to green. Grass paint

is purchased as a concentrate and then you can

vary the shade of green by changing the ratio of

dye to water used in the grass painting process.

Professional sports teams and golf courses have

been using grass paint for decades but only recently

has grass painting been used on residential yards

and lawns of commercial properties.

What are the advantages of lawn paint?

Lawn paint has many advantages. Green grass

paint is a great way to quickly improve the curb

appeal of a property by giving the property a lush

green lawn as opposed to an ugly brown lawn. The

lawn dye is harmless to the lawn, pets, and people

and dries in less than an hour. The grass paint also

lasts up to 12 weeks or until mowed off, and best

of all, it does not wash off and requires

no watering.

Grass paint - The best solution for brown grass?

This method of beautifying a yard or commercial

property lawn is quickly catching on. There are

many reasons for the demand for having grass

painted green. The most obvious is the current

condition of the real estate market. From longer

averages of time before a property is sold to vacant

and abandoned properties in addition to tighter

water restrictions in some communities, the list of

reasons is long and continues to grow.

Improving a dried up and/or brown lawn by

reseeding or purchasing sod is a laborious task,

time-consuming (the actual time involved to place

the seeds or sod), and expensive (materials and

watering costs) venture. The quickest and simplest

way to liven up the grass and to improve a lawn’s

appearance is to paint it with green dye. While the

green dye will not last forever, it can buy someone

a yard full of green grass for up to 12 weeks.

Provided that one does not cut the grass during

that time period, that is three whole months!

That is often the time needed for a Builder, Agent,

Homeowner or reluctant lien holder to sell

a property.

I am walking through the narrow alleys of the

Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. I see tables laden

with spices. Their colors hint at what they

are: cinnamon, saffron, cumin, rosebuds. There

are a multitude of sights, sounds, and tastes in

the crowded market: Turkish Delight, a sweet

gelatinous confection with pistachio nuts, turquoise

jewelry, silver, diamonds, and ceramics, to name

only a few. A man standing in a doorway beckons

me in. I enter into a small store that is stacked to

the ceiling with folded textiles. He invites me to sit

down on a bench. He offers me a glass of tea that

he plucks from a copper tray. As I savor my tea,

he lays a package upon the floor. He unfolds it,

revealing a Turkish kilim with a colorful geometric

design. This is a magical moment that initiates a

lifelong appreciation for handwoven rugs.

A kilim is a flat woven rug. It doesn’t have a pile. It

is woven on a loom with a tapestry technique.

A WEAVER’S TECHNIQUE IS SO DISTINCTIVE, THAT THEY MUST WEAVE THE CARPET FROM START TO FINISH.

Page 44: Ole Decor - Fall 2011

This is the same technique used to create the huge

pictorial tapestries hanging in castles and museums

all over Europe. A foundation of threads, called a

warp, is stretched tautly on a frame. The colorful

design threads, called the weft, are then woven

through the warp. To create a pattern, the colors

are woven to a point where one row of the design

ends and the thread is linked (like linking arms with

another person) with a different color. Another

method is to make an about face and continue

the thread’s path in the row above. This leaves a

small hole in the weaving, so these spots must be

staggered throughout the rug.

The interwoven threads create a grid. A good

contemporary reference is computer pixels. Pixels

have to be quite small to create a realistic image

or you get jagged square edges. In woven goods

this is generally known as thread count. The warp

threads have to be finer and closer together, as do

the weft threads, to create very fine curvilinear

designs. As a seemingly never ending display of

rugs avwas unfolded before me in the carpet shop,

I became acquainted with a wide range of quality,

as well as color schemes and designs. My budget

restricted the quality of my selection that day, but I

treasured it for years.

Since my first purchase of a Turkish kilim, I have

graduated to a heavier and finer style, the knotted

pile rug. The town of Hereke, in Turkey, has

workshops that produce some of the finest carpets

in the country. The carpet starts out on an upright

loom with the warps tautly strung, but then a

different technique is employed. The weaver wraps

threads around one or more warp threads and

makes a tight knot. They hold a cutting tool in one

hand to cut the threads to the proper pile length.

Generally, the pile is wool and the warp and

stabilizing weft threads between the rows of pile

are cotton. Like the kilim, the knots per square

inch vary, with the most dense number being the

best quality. There are super finely woven carpets

that have both silk warp and weft. Hereke silk

carpets can have as many as 576 knots per square

centimeter. Hereke carpet designs include patterns

with flowers, birds, the tree of life, and prayer

niches with suspended lamps. I purchased the

design called “Flowers of Seven Mountains.” It has

a dark blue background with multi-colored flowers.

It is impossible not to fall in love with these carpets

when you visit the workshops and actually see

the weavers creating them. A weaver’s technique

is so distinctive, that they must weave the carpet

from start to finish. It can take a year or more to

complete a large rug.

If you are looking for contemporary or custom

designs that can be created in less time there is

another alternative. There is a technique that

produces luxurious wool pile carpets and rugs in

just a matter of days. Hand-tufted carpets and

rugs are made using a hand-operated tool that

punches strands of wool into a canvas that has

been stretched on a frame. The design is drawn

on the canvas and then the pattern is filled in with

the appropriate color wool. Once the rug design

is fully piled, the rug is removed from the frame

and a jute or cotton fabric is glued to the back of

the rug. It is fascinating to watch them finish the

surface of the rugs. They can clip the loops created

in the punching process to create a “velvet pile” or

leave them looped. They also sculpt the carpet by

shaving it.

A similar industrial process called needle tufting is

used to create commercial wall-to-wall carpeting.

The tufting machine is like a giant sewing machine

where 800 to 2,000 needles work together to pull

the yarn through. Most tufting machines are about

12 feet wide. This process provides a relatively

low cost alternative for carpeting wall-to-wall

than hand-made carpets and rugs. Rugs can be

cut down to specific sizes and the edges finished.

Commercial carpets range from single colors to

complex patterns that are screen printed onto them.

Similar standards apply when checking for quality in

a commercially produced carpet.

More strands of fiber per square inch (density), keeps

the pile from being crushed underfoot. You can

ascertain just how dense a carpet is by poking your

finger into the pile. I tested two different types of

carpet in my home. I discovered that one was denser

than the other, but I could see the backing on both.

When I tested my Hereke rug, I couldn’t even get

my finger into the pile. This is one reason they last

for centuries. Another factor is the fiber itself. As

fibers are spun, they are twisted together into a single

thread or yarn. More twist equals more durability.

Plying two or more of these yarns together also

requires twist and adds another level of strength. Of

the synthetic fibers, nylon is considered to be the

most durable. Wool is also a durable, green, low-

allergenic product that is beautiful. Manufacturers

generally provide details about density and twist to

consumers at the point of sale.

There have been several changes in the design of

American homes in the past twenty years. Wood and

ceramic flooring are replacing wall-to-wall carpets,

and walls are being removed in favor of open living

spaces. Living spaces are now being defined by an

area rug. Being a fan of rugs, I like this change.

My kilims would shift and bunch when they were

laid down on carpet, and I noticed that the heavier

knotted rugs would do the same. They just work

better on hard floors, although small kilims still

get kicked up and slide around on hard floors, thus

requiring a stabilizing underpad.

I have barely scratched the surface when it comes to

all the beautiful hand woven rugs that are produced

throughout the world. A little information is

important when looking for quality rugs and carpets,

so keep these tips in mind on your next visit to your

local rug and carpet store.

Closets are personal places which all of us

want need and desire. Nobody escapes

the hunger for more. The compulsively

organized spend hours arranging, stacking, and

labeling. They sleep better just knowing everything

is in its proper place. Equally driven are the

packrats who can’t throw anything away, yet

never stop collecting. It is not surprising that most

home plans do not have adequate closet space.

You can increase your closet space by modifying

your home plan to accommodate more closet

space or by building additional closets after your

home is built. With an increase of building-supply

stores and home centers, materials and fittings are

closer at hand. In addition, prefabricated doors,

storage systems, and shelf systems make it easy

for home carpenters to tackle jobs that once only

professionals could handle.

KEEPING IT IN

THE CLOSET

Storage Configurations

A few simple fixes can immediately improve the

usefulness of a closet. Any closet that is at least 8

feet high can handle double clothes poles allowing

you to hang two rows of short clothes. There are

no rules that say all clothing must hang at the same

height, or that the hanging items cannot clear the

floor by only an inch. Within the walls of the closet,

your needs should dictate the arrangement of

modular storage areas.

In addition to the traditional shelf-and-pole setup,

you can install baskets, drawers, and tie, belt, and

shoe racks. The possibilities for arranging your

closet’s components are really endless.

There are a variety of shoe racks that are made

to hang from walls or the inside of doors where

contents can be easily seen and found. There are

also comparmentalized shoe holders or shelves for

single pairs of shoes.

Lighting Considerations

No matter what the inside of your closet looks

like, it should be well light. A light is useful in

any closet, but for a closet that is deep enough to

remain in partial darkness, even with its door open,

it is a necessity. Normally a regular 75-watt bulb is

all that is needed for adequate lighting.

The positioning of the lighting is also important.

Its purpose is to illuminate the contents of the

enclosure. Therefore, do not tuck it high up on the

ceiling at the back of a wide shelf that shields it

from most of the room. The light should be placed

on the ceiling, well forward of the shelf edges. If

that is not possible, it can be mounted on the front

of, or even under, the top shelf. The best place for

the switch is on the outside wall of the closet.

Decorative Treatments

Whether or not the interior of a closet is decorative

may not be terribly important to the life-style of the

family that uses it. But the exterior should blend

with the décor of the room where it is located. That

means the top of the closet’s outside walls may

require comparable crown molding that matches

the rest of the room. There should also be a

baseboard decorated the same way. The closet door

may also require comparable treatment.

The hardware, too, should be taken into

consideration. The hinges and knobs, even the

catches, should be chosen with an eye towards how

they will fit in with the rest of the room.

Closet Design Tips

Here are some important tips for closet design:

• Ifyou’relowonspace,reorganize.Many

closets can be reconfigured to have two or more

• Addafull-lengthmirrortoyourcloset.This

is not only practical but lends a grand feel to

the space. Position it so that you can stand far

enough away from the glass to see a full-length

image.

• Ifyouhavethespace,tryaddingsomething

unexpected and luxurious to your closet, like a

sitting area with chairs.

All of these possibilities and many more exist and

must be carefully studied when approaching closet

design. There are situations and variations that are

beyond the scope of this article, but considering

each of the ideas outlined here when you start

designing new or existing closet space will help you

to cover the basics. Combine various functions and

features to solve that difficult closet problem that

exists in your new home.

eventos sociales y reuniones.
