Oldcastle®ArchitecturalProducts,SustainableDesign,andLEED®v4Introduction:EvaluatingGreenBuildingGreenbuildingisfirmlyestablishedinthecommercialnewconstructionmarket,anddemandforgreenbuildingmaterialscontinuestogrow.TheU.S.GreenBuildingCouncil(USGBC®)hasLEED®-certifiedover4billionsquarefeetofbuildingspacethroughouttheworld.1Numerousfederalgovernmentagenciesandstategovernmentshaveenactedgreenbuildinginitiatives.Inmanycases,theseinitiativesmovebeyondvoluntarymeasurestogreenbuildingcoderequirementsorrequirementsforLEED-certificationofpublicandinsomecases,private,newconstruction.TheLEED®BuildingDesignandConstruction:NewConstructionandMajorRenovationgreenbuildingprogram(LEED)[Ref.4],developedbytheUSGBC,isperhapsthemostwidelyusedgreenbuildingprogramintheU.S.Itisavoluntaryprogramthatallowsdesignerstopickandchoosewhichofthevariouscreditstheywanttopursue.LEEDratingsystemsexistfornotonlynewcommercialconstruction,butalsoforeverythingfromschoolstodatacenters,aswellasforcommercialinteriors,buildingoperationsandmaintenance,neighborhooddevelopmentandhomes.Whilethespecificsofeachratingsystemvary,allshareanorganizationthatconsidersthebuildingsite,locationandtransportation,waterefficiency,energyandatmosphere,materialsandresources,andindoorenvironmentalquality.SeeFigure1.

TheLEED®CanadaforNewConstruction2009ratingsystem[Ref.3]isbasedontheU.S.version,LEED2009.SomeofthemostnotabledifferencesforbuildingproductsarethatLEED®Canadaincludesacreditforutilizingdurablematerials(RegionalPrioritycreditDurableBuilding),recognizesdifferencesinmethodoftransportforbuildingproducts(MaterialsandResourcescreditRegionalMaterials),andallowsforaspecificrecycledcontentcalculationforproductsutilizingcementreplacements(supplementarycementingmaterials)(MaterialsandResourcesRecycledContent).GoingforwardCanadawillnotdevelopaseparateratingsystembutwilluseLEEDv4,anditisexpectedthatthesedistinctionswilllikelybelost.ThoughLEEDmaybethebestknowngreenbuildingprogram,itisnottheonlyone.TheASHRAE189.1StandardfortheDesignofHigh-PerformanceGreenBuildingsExceptLow-RiseResidentialBuildings(ASHRAE189.1)[Ref.7]isonealternativetotheLEEDratingsystem.ASHRAE189.1issimilartoLEEDwithafewkeydifferences,theprimarybeingthatASHRAE189.1iswritteninmandatory,code-enforceablelanguage.ASHRAE189.1isintendedasaminimumgreenbuildingstandard.UnlikeLEED,designersusingASHRAE189.1haveveryfewchoicesregardingtheprovisionsofthestandard.MostoftheprovisionsofASHRAE189.1arerequired.Asaresult,ASHRAE189.1canbeadoptedbyalocaljurisdictioneitherdirectlyorasacompliancepathwithintheInternationalGreenConstructionCode(IgCCTM)[Ref.2]. TheIgCCisanoverlaygreenbuildingcodewritteninmandatorylanguageforadoptioninconjunctionwiththeInternationalBuildingCode.The2015andprioreditionsoftheIgCCweredevelopedbytheInternationalCodeCouncilandwerelooselybasedontheLEEDratingsystem.FutureeditionsoftheIgCCwillhavetechnicalcontentbasedsolelyontheASHRAE189.1standard.TheIgCCcontainsmandatoryrequirementsbutallowsforsomejurisdictionalchoiceinselectingtheprovisionstobepartofthecode.Inadditiontothegreenbuildingprogramsmentionedabove,thereareotherlesswidelyusedprograms.TheGreenBuildingAssessmentProtocolforCommercialBuildings©(ANSI/GBI01-2010)[Ref.1]isaconsensusstandarddevelopedbytheGreenBuildingInitiative(GBI)thatisusedasthebasisfortheGreenGlobesonlinebuildingandmanagementenvironmentalaudit.Thisprogramallowsforeitherself-assessmentorthird-partyverificationofabuilding’sdesignandconstruction.TheNationalGreenBuildingStandardTM(NAHB/ICC700-2008)[Ref.5]coversresidentialconstructionandwasdevelopedbytheNationalAssociationofHomeBuilders(NAHB)andtheInternationalCodeCouncil.Therearealsostateandlocalgreenbuildingcodeswhicharebeyondthescopeofthiswhitepaper.TheSITESv2RatingSystem[Ref.6],ownedbyGreenBusinessCertificationInc.,isagreenratingprogramfocusedonsustainablelanddesignanddevelopment.Itisapplicabletositesthatmayormaynotincludebuildings.ItisorganizedmuchlikeLEEDandcontainscreditsintheareasofpre-designandplanning,water,soilandvegetation,materialselection,humanhealthandwell-being,construction,operationsandmaintenance,andeducationandperformancemonitoring.MostcreditsinSITESdonotimpactthebuildingitself.ConcretemasonryhardscapesproductscancontributetowardmanycreditswithinSITES,butfurtherdiscussionofSITESisbeyondthescopeofthiswhitepaper.

SustainableDesignWhileeachofthegreenbuildingratingprogramsisslightlydifferentincontentandapproach,thereisgeneralagreementontheimportanceofevaluating:

• energyefficiency• waterefficiency• landuse(sites)• materialsandresources(resourceefficiency)• pollution(globalimpact)• indoorenvironmentalquality(healthandwellbeing)• transportation• operationsandmaintenance

Greenbuildingisnothowever,necessarilythesameassustainabledesign.Sustainabledesignreferstothedesignandconstructionofbuildingsinawaythatmeetstheneedsoftodaywithoutcompromisingtheneedsofthefuture.Withgreenbuildingthefocusisoftenlimitedtoenvironmentalimpacts,buttruesustainabledesignconsiderstheeconomicandsocialaspectsofthedesigninadditiontotheenvironmentalimpactsandlookstobalancethis“triplebottomline.”Sustainablebuildingdesignisaholisticlookattheentirebuildingprocess.Asaresult,thisreportalsoincludesotheraspectsofsustainabledesignthatmaynotbeincludedincurrentgreenbuildingratingprogramssuchas:

• environmentallypreferableproducts• durability• lifecyclecost• safetyandsecurity• acousticcomfort• visualcomfort(aesthetics)• efficientuseofmaterials• avoidanceofwaste

Oldcastle®ArchitecturalMasonry&HardscapesProductsThisreportcoversOldcastle®Architecturalconcretemasonryandhardscapes"nationalproductoffering"includinglinesmarketedundertheEchelon™andBelgard®brands–Trenwyth®masonryblock,Quik-Brik®,ArtisanMasonryStoneVeneers®,PerformanceUpgradeOptionsandSystems,Amerimix®baggedgoodsandBelgard®hardscapes.Thisreportfocusesonproductsusedinsustainablecommercialbuildingdesigns.Thoughmanyofthesustainablestrategieslistedinthisreportmayalsobeappropriateforresidentialconstruction,theresidentialmarkethasseveraluniqueaspectsthatareonlycoveredbrieflyhere.InsightsintothesuitabilityofEchelonmasonryproductsandBelgardhardscapesproductsforsustainabledesignstrategiesarebasedoninformationprovidedbyOldcastleArchitectural,andinformationobtainedonline.

Evaluatingtheapplicabilitytosustainabledesignstrategiesrequiresanunderstandingoftheuseoftheproductanditsmanufacture.BasedoninformationreceivedfromOldcastleArchitecturalandobtainedonline,thefollowinggeneralizationscanbemade.PrimaryingredientsinallEchelonmasonryandBelgardhardscapesproductsarecement,sandandotheraggregates,andwater.Admixturesmayalsobeincludedtogivetheunitscolor,resistancetowaterpenetration,orotherproperties.Therawingredientsaremixedtogetherandthenformedbymachine.Theyaretypicallycuredinachamberattemperaturesbetween100°Fto140°Fathighhumidity.Insomecasesrecycledmaterialsmaybeusedsuchaspost-consumerglass,slagcement,orrecycledaggregate.ProductsaremanufacturedatfacilitieslocatedthroughouttheU.S.andCanada.Rawmaterialsarelocallysourcedwhereavailable.Similarly,recycledmaterialsusedvaryfromplanttoplantdependinguponlocalavailability.EchelonMasonry,BelgardHardscapesandSustainableDesignPrinciplesTheapplicabilityofaproducttoasustainablebuildingdesignstrategydependsbothonitsuseandoncharacteristicsofitsmanufacture.ThissectiondescribessustainabledesignprinciplesapplicabletoEchelonMasonryandBelgardpaverproducts.InformationrelatedtospecificLEEDandothergreenbuildingprogramcriteriacanbefoundinthesectionsattheendofthisreport.EnergyEfficiencyAnenergyefficientbuildingenvelopeisakeycomponentinsustainablebuildingdesign.Achievinganenergyefficientbuildingenvelopeincludesconsiderationofboththeinsulatingvalueofmaterialsaswellasthethermalmassofmaterials.Thermalmassasfoundinmasonryproductshelpstoreduceindoortemperatureswingsandoftenleadstoreductioninthesizeofmechanicalheatingandcoolingsystems.Thebenefitsofthermalmassaremostaccuratelyreflectedwhenutilizingenergyanalysisprogramsthatanalyzethebuildingovera24hourperiod,365daysayear.AllEchelonMasonryproductsprovidesomemeasureofthermalmass.Thermalmassisdirectlyproportionaltotheweightofthematerial.Thermalmassismosteffectivewhenusedontheinteriorsideoftheinsulationinthebuildingenvelope.Thisincludesload-bearingconcretemasonryaspartofacavitywallsystemaswellasinteriorconcretemasonrywallsandinteriorstoneapplications.Echelonofferstwomasonrysystemsthatcombinethethermalmassbenefitsofconcretemasonrywithintegralinsulation—InsulTech™SystemandEnduraMax™HighPerformanceWallSystem.SeeFigures2and3.InadditionmanyTrenwythconcretemasonryunitsoffertheoptionforfactory-installedexpandedpolystyreneinsulationinthecellsoftheunits.

WallSystem(R-valueof9.2)EnvironmentallyResponsiveSitePlanningEnvironmentallyresponsivesiteplanningincludesconsiderationofsiteselection,sitedisturbance,stormwatermanagement,andeffectofthebuildingonitssurroundings.Permeablepavementsystemsandgridpaversareoftenusedonsustainablebuildingdesignstoreducetheheatislandeffectandreducestormwaterrunoff.Theheatislandeffectisthateffectwherebydarkcoloredsurfacesretainexcessheatcreatingamicroclimate.Thisiswhynighttimetemperaturesinthecountrysideareoftenmuchcoolerthaninthecity.Theheatislandeffectcanbereducedbyshadingofhorizontalsurfaces,byintroducingvegetation,orbyutilizinglight-coloredorreflectivematerialsforthehardscapeonaproject.Belgardcommercialpavers,includingtheModulineSeries™,comeinseveralcolorsthatmeetsolarreflectancecriteriaandcanbeusedinapplicationsrangingfromparkinglotstoplazas.BelgardTurfstoneisagridpaverthatallowsvegetationtogrowthroughit.Permeablepaversareanimportantstrategyinmanagingstormwater.Belgardoffersanumberofpermeablepavingoptions,includingtheAqualineSeries™,designedtomanagestormwater.OtherBelgardpaversmayalsoallowwatertopermeatedependingonthedesignoftheinstallation.Permeablepaversthatalsomeettherequirementsforheatislandmitigationcanbecountedtowardbothstrategies.EnvironmentallyPreferableMaterialsandProductsConsiderationoftheenvironmentalimpactofbuildingmaterialsandproductsisanimportantelementinasustainabledesign,thoughitisonlyoneofseveralcriteriatobeconsideredforproductselection.Materialsshouldbeevaluatedovertheirentirelifecycle,fromrawmaterialextractiontoendofusefullife.Inthiscontextenvironmentallypreferredproductsshouldincorporateoneormoreofthefollowingstrategies:

• Abundanceofrawmaterials• Efficientuseofrawmaterials• Useofbio-basedorrapidlyrenewablematerials

EchelonMasonryandBelgardhardscapesproductsmayincorporateseveralofthesesustainablestrategies.Thesearediscussedintheparagraphsbelowandthesectionsthatfollow.AbundantandEfficientUseofRawMaterials.ManyEchelonmasonryandBelgardproductsusesandwhichisconsideredanabundantrawmaterialasanaggregate.SandisalsoaprimaryingredientinAmerimixmortar,groutandstuccoproducts.CommonaggregatewhichisusedinbothEchelonmasonryandBelgardproductsisalsoanabundantrawmaterial.Themanufacturingprocessfortheseproductshaslittlewaste.Upto98%ofrawmaterialsareusedinthefinalproduct.RecycledMaterialContent.AccordingtotheinformationprovidedontheEchelonMasonrywebsiteinregardstoTrenwyth,thefollowingproductscontainasignificantamountofrecycledcontent:

• Astra-Glaze-SW+®glazedmasonryunits• Verastone®recycledgroundfacemasonryunits• Verastone®Plusrecycledfilled&polishedgroundfacemasonryunits• Acousta-Wal®/Astra-Glaze-SW+®sound-absorbingmasonryunits• Acousta-Wal®/Verastone®sound-absorbingmasonryunits

Recycledcontentmaterialsvarywiththelocationofmanufacturerbutmayincludeupto20%–30%byweightpost-consumerrecycledglass,slagcement(groundgranulatedblastfurnaceslag),andcrushedconcreteforaggregate.Belgardhardscapeproductsmayalsocontainrecycledcontentincludingflyashandslagcementdependinguponmanufacturingfacility.RegionalManufacturing.Oldcastleoperatesmanufacturingfacilitiesnationwide,includingmorethan150facilities.Mostaggregateissourcedclosetothemanufacturingplant.Mostplantssourceapproximately80%(byweight)oftheirrawmaterialsfromwithin500milesofthefactory,somewithin100miles,althoughinmostratingsystemsitisthedistancebetweenmaterialextraction,aswellasmanufacturer,andtheprojectsitethatiscalculated.

SustainablePracticesinManufacturing.Oldcastlestrivesforefficiencyinmanufacturing.Recenteffortsincludeinstallationofenergyefficientlightinginplantscompany-wide,reuseandrecyclingofwoodpallets,anduseofpackagingwithrecycledcontent.Recyclable.ThemasonrycomponentsofallEchelonmasonryandBelgardhardscapesproductsarerecyclable.Groundconcretemasonryunitscanbeusedforstructuralfillorasaggregateinnewblock.Salvageable.Belgardpaversareeasilysalvagedandreused.Theirmortar-lessinstallationallowsforeaseofreplacementandreuse.LifeCycleAssessmentandProductDeclarations.Thereareseveralaspectstoconsiderintheenvironmentalevaluationofbuildingmaterials.Lifecycleassessment(LCA)allowsforacompleteexaminationofallaspectsofbuildingmaterialmanufactureanduse.Itincludesallimpactsfromrawmaterialacquisitiontomanufacturingtobuildingmaintenanceandendofbuildinglife.Thisisoftencalled“cradletograve”forbuildingmaterials.Ataminimum,LCAmustincludeimpactsfromrawmaterialacquisition(cradle)tothemanufactureoffinishedproduct(gate).TheresultsofanLCAcanbereportedbyamanufacturer,orcanbeusedtodevelopanEnvironmentalProductDeclaration(EPD).AnEPDisaformalreportingofthelifecycleimpactsofproductsandisdoneaccordingtospecificrules.OldcastleArchitecturalisintheprocessofconductinglifecycleassessmentsontheTrenwythfamilyofproductsaswellastheInsulTechmasonrysystemwiththegoalofpublishinganEPDforthem.ATypeIII,third-partyverifiedEPDforBelgardpaversproducedattheAnchor,AnOldcastleCompany,Easton,PAplantisavailableonlineathttp://info.nsf.org/Certified/Sustain/ProdCert/EPD10050.pdf.DurabilityandLifeCycleCostAnalysisCostsofbuildingmaterialsshouldbeconsideredovertheentirelifespanofthebuilding.Durablematerialslikemasonryproductsgenerallyhaveanadvantageinthatbecauseoftheirlonglifeandlowmaintenance,theirlifecyclecostsareoftenlowascomparedwithproductsthathavealowinitialcostbuthighlifecyclecost.SafetyandSecuritySafetyandsecurityareimportantaspectsofsustainabledesign.Fire-resistantconstructionandresistancetoimpactsandwind-bornedebrispromoteoccupanthealthandsafety.AllOldcastleEchelonmasonryandBelgardhardscapesproductsarenon-combustiblethoughsomeincorporateinsulationorotherancillarycomponentsthatmaynotbe.Masonryisalsoresistanttoimpacts.Inareaswhereextraprotectionisrequired,groutingandreinforcementcanbeaddedtoconcretemasonry.AcousticComfortAcousticcomfortisanotherimportantelementinsustainabledesigns.WallswithhighSoundTransmissionClass(STC)valuesprovidesuperioracousticinsulation.STCvaluesforconcrete

masonryunitsvarydependingonthesizeoftheunit,unitdensity,andanyfillinthecells.TypicalSTCvaluesrangefrom45foralightweight8inchunittoover60forafully-grouted12inchunit,easilyachievingtheminimumSTCforwallsof45to60requiredbymostratingsystemswithacousticcriteria.Inaddition,EchelonAcousta-Walunitsprovidesoundabsorptionatallfrequencies,evenlowfrequenciesthatcanbehardtocontrol.SuperiorIndoorEnvironmentalQualitySuperiorindoorairqualityencompassesboththereduction/eliminationofpollutantsinabuilding(i.e.tobaccosmoke,chemicalpollutants)aswellasmoisturecontroltohelpprohibitmold.Concretemasonryisinert,isnotafoodsourceforpestsorrodents,doesnotsupportmoldgrowth,doesnotproducevolatileorganiccompounds(VOCs)noranyhazardouschemicalscurrentlydesignatedashavinghighhealthrisks.Quik-Brik,ArtisanMasonryStoneVeneers,andthemasonryunitsusedwiththeEnduraMaxWallSystemaretypicallynotcoatedorsealedandasaresultdonotcontainanyVOCs.Likewise,thestandardfinishonInsulTechisVOC-free.

Trenwyth'sfactory-appliedsealants,Trendcoat®(acrylicbased)andTrendcoat®WB(waterbased),areappliedtoallpolishedgroundfaceandfilledandpolishedfaces.Boththefactory-appliedsealantandthefieldcoatingsealantemiteitherlowVOC'sornoVOC's.ThisappliestothefollowingTrenwythproducts:

EfficientUseofMaterialsOldcastleEchelonmasonryproductsprovidebothstructureandfinishinoneproduct.Thisefficientuseofmaterialseliminatesresourcesassociatedwithotherfinishesaswellasthetimeneededtoinstallotherproducts.TheLEED®v4RatingSystemInfall2013U.S.GreenBuildingCouncilformallylaunchedLEEDv4.ThesuiteofLEEDratingsystemsthatmakeupLEEDv4nowaddressesanevenbroaderarrayofbuildingsthatmakeup21differentmarketsectors.LEEDratingsystemsareorganizedintothebroadcategoriesofbuildingdesignandconstruction(BD+C),interiordesignandconstruction(ID+C),buildingoperationsandmaintenance(O+M),neighborhooddevelopment(ND)andhomes(HOMES).Withineachofthesebroadcategoriesnumeroustypesofconstructionarecovered.OneofthemostwidelyusedratingsystemsisBD+CNewConstruction.Asaresult,thiswhitepaperfocusesonthecreditsfoundinthatratingsystem.

ThenewestversionoftheLeadershipinEnergyandEnvironmentalDesign®,orLEED,ratingsystem,knownasLEEDv4introducedanewapproachforbuildingmaterialsandproducts.LEEDv4introducedthreeentirelynewcreditsintheMaterials&Resourcessectionfocusedonproductdisclosure.ThiswhitepaperexaminesthesenewcreditsandothersinLEEDv4andtheirconnectionwithOldcastleArchitecturalEchelonmasonryandBelgardhardscapeproducts.ChangestoMaterialsandResourcesinLEED®v4ThemostsignificantchangesinLEEDv4occurredintheMaterialsandResourcescategory.InLEED2009theMaterialsandResources(MR)categoryawardedpointsincreditsfocusedontheattributesofrecycledcontent,regionalmaterials,rapidlyrenewablematerials,andcertifiedwood,aswellasreuseofmaterialsandconstructionwastemanagement.LEEDv4takesanentirelydifferentapproach.ThefocusofMRinLEEDv4isonproducttransparency.Sixofthe13possiblepointsrelatetoproductingredientdisclosure,includingenvironmentalproductdeclarations(EPD),supplychainreportingandmaterialingredientreporting.OthersignificantchangesintheMRcategoryincludetheadditionofwholebuildinglifecycleassessmentandtheeliminationofregionalmaterialsasastand-alonecredit.ThecreditsthatformtheMRcategoryinLEEDv4areshowninTable1.Table1:LEEDv4MaterialsandResourcesCategoryCredit LEEDv4 Points Description
