MESSAGE FROM THE OSA CHAIR Dear Alumni The year has started off like 2015 ended, with so much going on. We welcomed back our Matrics of 2015 for their 1st Reunion which was an amazing success and to give them a send-off to varsity that they will remember. Talking about Reunions, there will be a Reunion in March in Cape Town and one in the USA later in the year, dates are pending but they are both in the pipeline and as soon as they are confirmed, we will let you know. Also happening soon is our Easter Festival http://events.stithian.com/events/easter2016/ which once again is shaping up to be an exciting time on campus with some great teams arriving at our gates to take part in a number of sports over the Easter weekend. As it is with our great school, we are always growing and with growth comes construction. The school is a mass of people doing great things to our campus and I want to acknowledge one specific Alumnus, Carel Nolte. Seeing the growth of our school and potential being created through the development on campus, him and his family donated a sum of R3 million towards the developments. A gesture of generosity that will help to continue the work on the property, as well as lay future foundations for growth, and I want to thank him for being so generous with this donation. My appeal is that if there is a way you can get involved in shaping the face of the school, that you take the opportunity to give something back to a school that gave you so much. This may be an assumption on my part and if it is incorrect I apologise. With simple opportunities like the “Hundred Club” which will cost you R100 a month or the “Make your Mark Campaign” for badges which cost R350 once off, you have the opportunity to make a significant difference to the future of our school. A further opportunity will be launched later this month, which is a very exciting time for us, partly because it has taken nearly two years to finish. The OSA is now a fully licensed Society Lottery. What this means is we are now able to officially host two major lotteries per year, with some amazing prizes up for grabs. These prizes will be in the form of overseas ‘bucket list’ trips, with limited tickets, to ensure a greater chance of winning. The details will follow soon, but this is something that you are going to want to take advantage of. With only 2000 tickets available per lottery, they will be open to the Alumni first for one week to guarantee the option is reserved for the OSA first. After that week, we open the lottery to the parents and the broader Saints community. My advice would be to get in early. Look out for this and other great things happening at the OSA and the school. I look forward to seeing you at the Easter Festival Shaun Edmeston Chair Old Stithian Association and Old Stithian Trust [email protected]

Old Stithian News : General Jessica Nupen (2003) is on the list of the 100 most Influential Africans in Germany 2015/2016 and was mentioned in an article in the Sunday Times. She is an international Choreographer and choreographed ”Rebellion and Johannesburg” which toured Germany and is part of the Dance Umbrella in February. http://www.africanheritagemagazine.de/?p=2364 Kagiso Rabada's 13-144 earns South Africa consolation Centurion win : "Kagiso Rabada, the youngest South African to take 10 wickets in a Test match, finished with match figures of 13-144 - figures only bet-tered for his country by Makhaya Ntini's 13-132 against West Indies in 2005." http://www.skysports.com/live-scores/cricket/south-africa-v-england/16457 Well done to all the Old Stithian participants at the recent Ironman competition in East London, including David Smith (Headboy 2006), Chris Jacobs (2006), Tinashe Chandauka (Headboy 2007) and Jono Dicks 1998)
Haydn Porteous (2010) won the Joburg Open in January 2016 with a final round of 69 on the East Course earned him his maiden European Tour title on 18 under par, two clear of another young South African star, Zander Lombard, who closed with a 71. Left : Haydn with Jonathan Dixon, Nick Scher and David Schultz.
Alexander Braczkowski (2006), Big Cat Biologist, spoke at the Boys’ College about Leopard Conservation. Alex completed his Masters at the University of Oxford on the sustainability of leopard hunting in Africa. He has researched leopards in Zululand and the Cape and filmed them in Zambia, India and Sri Lanka. He has also worked at the National Geographic Magazine and Television, as an assistant to Steve Winter on a worldwide story about leopards. He is currently a doctoral researcher at the University of Queensland in Australia. Humanity has an obligation to protect that which cannot protect itself and it is clear, that Alex, has made a formidable impact on conservation both in South Africa and abroad. His insatiable passion for the conservation of the leopard is certainly going to make a difference in the future. Hayley Parker (2008) has qualified for the Rio Olympics (equestrian) and has one final event in March in Portugal to decide whether SA will get an eventing ticket to Rio. USA Reunion
After discussions with Shaun Edmeston, Chair of the Old Saints Association, we have agreed to try and make things happen in the USA for Old Stithians this year. There are so many of you dotted around the States and most have expressed good wishes to get involved and get to meet some of the people you knew in the old country.
In this regard, we find that the Database is very poor, there are way more than the few we have on record, and as the USA is so vast, it’s going to be quite a trick to get a good number together. To do this, we would like to identify an event, maybe a weekend, when it would be attractive for all to come together somewhere and celebrate our heritage. Our initial thought was perhaps the Las Vegas 7’s, to watch the Blitzbokke in action, but that is in March this year which is too close to realistically organise in time, so if this is the best event, we will start now to target 2017. Another idea was maybe the US open with Old Stithian, Kevin Anderson sure to be playing, so it could also be a possibility, and maybe a better time of year for many?
So I have 2 requests for you:
1. Please send your updated contact details to [email protected] in order for me to put together an USA database, firstly for this reunion, and secondly so that I can sent it back to the Old Stithian Association for their records. (If you are not comfortable with this, just reply back to Susannah [email protected] and let her know, and we will work around this. I assure you all direction communication is confidential).
2 Please let me have your thoughts as to what type of event, when and for how long. Also, if you would prefer with or without family, so that we can get some ideas together.
I look forward to hearing from a lot of you, and please pass this e-mail around as much as possible, so we can build a USA OSA that is healthy, robust and assistant to all Saints in the USA.
Thanks and Kind Regards,
Lars Greiner (Class of 1988) Mobile: +27 82 658 7518 [email protected]

Round Square Alumni
Continuing on the theme of Round Square’s 50th Anniversary, what better time, we thought, to reinvigorate the Round Square Alumni programme and see if we can really get it off the ground in a meaningful way. In 2016 they will be developing a programme that will offer new ways for RS Alumni to re-engage, with potential initiatives ranging from social events to a dedicated RSIS project for Round Square Alumni. In the meantime they’ve set a challenge to connect with as many past students of Round Square schools as possible, and capture their stories, memories and experiences of Round Square activities and life at a Round Square school. In the coming months they intend to connect the Alumni story-telling with the research they are doing with Cambridge University’s Faculty of Education, and in order to do this they need critical mass – a significant enough group of past students to make a study possible.
Register now on the Round Square Intranet
As a Round Square alumnus you can register to access our intranet site and connect with other alumni from around the network, to share your Round Square story and stay up-to-date with news and find opportunities to get involved. The intranet will allow you to;
Access to our resource library
Find information about Round Square events
Identify opportunities to continue to support Round Square through the IDEALS
Share your Round Square stories from the past and how you implement learning now in everyday
life
Keep Round Square up to date with your contact details
Contact other Round Square alumni
To register please click the link to complete the web form https://www.roundsquare.org/our-alumni/ Once your registration has been approved by your school representative you will need to complete your Round Square profile page to keep in contact with both Round Square events and other alumni.
What would you like from Round Square?
As we grow our alumni database we would like to offer new opportunities to you all. We would love to hear from you to develop ideas and opportunities into the program. Tell us what you would like to be made available to you and we shall see what we can provide. Current ideas being explored are below; Conferences and workshops 'Meet and greets' across the globe Service projects Volunteering opportunities in your local areas
16
www.oldstithian.com
Tell us your stories! What's your achievement?
With the 50th Anniversary of Round Square being celebrated we would love to hear from you and celebrate your achievements. Since leaving school what have you gone on to achieve? We would like to hear your stories about, the impact Round Square has had on you whilst you were at school through to now in your current work, social and community lives. How did Round Square influence the next chapter in your life? Have you implemented any of your learning into your everyday life? Do you work in an industry that links to the IDEALS? Or are you able to implement them? Have you been able to support any projects in your local community or social networks in further education? Were you a Kurt Hahn winner in previous years? It doesn’t matter how great or small your story we would like to hear it. It allows us to see and understand what impact attending a Round Square school has had on you since leaving. Please include- your name, school and year of leaving. Send us your stories to [email protected] or alternatively on the below link - SHARE YOUR STORY. We would love to promote them to our Alumni network and to staff in current schools to show students what they are capable of achieving. If you have any further questions or would like more involvement please feel free to contact Emma.
Join our Research
Next year we will be partnering with Cambridge University's faulty of Education to conduct research into the impact of Round Square's style of education. Nearer the time we will be asking some of our alumni to take part so please share your story so that we can include you.
World Location
Where are you in the world? For Round Square to be able to host events we need to know where you are located in the world- from there we can plot alumni across the globe. This will also allow us to monitor where certain clusters of alumni are located ie; same country, city or even university or work place. Please send your country, city and your current work or university information through to [email protected].

New ’ Boys’ College Pavilion
The Boys’ Sports Pavilion is nearing completion and looks magnificent: there will be an official ‘launch’
on the evening of 8 March. The Nolte family has generously donated R1m towards the project, bringing
our donor funding total to R1.2m to date. We continue to appeal to donors to contribute to the
completion of the project, with its donor target of R5m to match the school’s contribution. A specific
appeal, ahead of the Easter Sports Festival, is being made to donors of furnishings and kitchen fittings to
the social lounge of the Boys’ Sports Pavilion; and for contributions of plants for landscaping the
surrounds.
New Girls’ College Pavilion
The Girls’ Sports Pavilion building project will begin soon after the Easter Sports Festival. The Nolte
family has generously donated R1m towards the project, giving significant momentum to the funding
campaign for this building – target R5m.
Prospective donors for our two pavilions are invited to contact Carel Nolte on
