Dear Parishioners, On June 29 the Church throughout the world celebrates the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul. It is a big feast everywhere, for the Paulist, certainly, but especially in Rome - when the palliums are blessed for the new Archbishops [it's the fancy collar Cardinal Cupich wears over his vestments that indicate he's an Archbishop]. This year, Monday, it is extra/extra special, because our dear friend and current deacon, Deacon Patrick Bergin will be ordained a priest. As we continue to pray for him and all those being ordained priests, and as we prepare to celebrate his Masses of Thanksgiving next weekend, I invited him to share a few words about what this means to him. Fr. Brad The Priest Comes from Among the People I am in last few days leading up to my priestly ordination, and the feeling is surreal! I am both very joyful, and a little terrified at this awesome responsibility. When I was young altar boy at a traditional gothic style church in downstate Illinois, we would line up before Mass in the sacristy to the left of the altar. When the priest gave a nod, I would tug the little silken rope and ring the sacristy bell to signal to the congregation that we were about to process out, and that they should stand. The brass and marble communion rail was a hard boundary between the sanctuary, where only men in robes were allowed, and the people in the pews, who never crossed or ascended into the sanctuary area. After Mass, we would exit straight back into the sacristy, and the priest would depart by his private exit back to the rectory. One of the most beautiful and significant liturgical changes of Vatican II was the removal of this artificial separation, and the idea that the priest, deacons, and all ministers come from among the people, play a particular role in the mass, and then immerse themselves back into the larger community by processing out at the end of Mass. They are not separate from, but simply members of the larger church. As another example of this same principle, during the Rite of Ordination each of us will be called forward by name. The Cardinal will then ask if we have been found worthy of ordination, and one designated priest will answer “after inquiry among the Christian people… I testify that they have been found worthy”. This “inquiry among the Christian people” should not be assumed or taken for granted. When my ordination was originally scheduled to happen at Old St. Mary’s in April, we had planned that a lay member of the parish would actually get up and testify to the ordaining Bishop about whether I should be ordained. I was hopeful that she would say mostly positive things, but even if she shared some areas for growth, that would have been fine. Priests are not to be imposed upon the people of God, but rather should come from among the community with their support and agreement. With all that has happened in these months, the COVID restrictions and the change of venue, it will unfortunately not be possible to have this lay testimony as part of the liturgy. But so many of you have reached out with messages of encourage-ment and affirmation that I do feel that I have your permission and support to proceed. So when we do celebrate Mass together, either in person or via livestream on July 4th and 5th, please know that I see myself as a priest who has come from among you, and with your blessings. In addition to my ordination, I am waiting for a new residence visa, and for Turkish airlines to resume international flights. Then sometime in late July or early August, I hope to head to the Archdiocese of Tabora, Tanzania where I will be serving. I expect to be back in Chicago at least once a year to visit family and hope to have opportunities for fellowship and worship together on those visits. Thank you and God keep you! Deacon Patrick

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles Tuesday: The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church Wednesday: St. Junípero Serra; Canada Day Friday: St. Thomas; First Friday Saturday: Independence Day; First Saturday; Blessed Virgin Mary

CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Making Hope Real: A Live Virtual Retreat Presented by Becky Eldredge and Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House

With the reality of what we are facing in our lives, what others are facing around us, and what our world is facing together, how can we continue to have hope? The Good News is that hope is infused in us by God alone. Hope does not mean being naive or ignorant about what is happening in the world around us. It is not mere optimism. Hope invites us to see it all, as God does, and not get locked into the darkness. In this live virtual retreat, Becky Eldredge, spiritual director and author of Busy Lives & Restless Souls and The Inner Chapel, shows you how to make hope real, even when this season of life feels anything but hopeful. Two dates are available: Tuesday, June 30 evening retreat (6:30-9:30pm) and Wednesday, July 1 morning retreat (9:00am-Noon) presented live via Zoom. The retreat will include three talks, guided prayer reflections, silent prayer time (on your own), and electronic materials to support your prayer. Register at www.jesuitretreat.org.
