Please remember that modesty, respect and good judgment

in your choice of dressing is very important

when attending mass or other church services.

Dresses, skirts and shorts should be near the knee. Off the

shoulder or low cut dresses or blouses, tank tops, muscle

shirts and tight fitting clothes are a sign of disrespect

to the church.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 1, 2018

Reflecting on this week’s readings, I thought of faith,

touch, healing, justice, and equality. In this Gospel reading there

are two stories of healing brought about by faith and touch. One is

about Jairus’ daughter who is dying. Jairus has faith that if Jesus

touches his daughter she will live. The other story is about a

woman who has been hemorrhaging for twelve years. She has

faith that if she touches Jesus’ clothing she will be healed. In both

cases their faith in the touch of Jesus heals them.

This Gospel reading reminds me of an article I read

called “The Healing Power of Touch”. Recently, while talking

with a friend who had just returned from missionary work in

Africa, I was reminded of this article and how powerful touch can

be. My friend, Sister Kay, a Medical Missionary of Mary, is a

dentist. After clinic hours she was asked to see three gentlemen

who had signed in earlier that day to see the medical doctor.

When their turn came they did not answer the call to see the

physician but waited until everyone left. Then they asked to see

Sister Kay. She examined them and prescribed medication.

Curious, she asked why they didn’t see the physician because

he could have may have prescribed stronger medication. They

answered, “But Sister you touch us.” Sister Kay physically,

emotionally, and spiritually touched those men. Touch is a

powerful instrument of healing. We can also bring healing to

others by touching them with our hearts.

The first reading from the book of Wisdom tells each of

us that we can gain immortality by living just and righteous lives.

Our second reading from Saint Paul’s second letter to the

Corinthians stresses equality. The rich should not get richer as

the poor get poorer. All of us should strive toward equality and

the common good.

Our Catholic faith provides all of us with guidelines on

how to live just and righteous lives. We live in a country founded

on the principles of equality and justice. On July 4th, the United

States celebrates Independence Day, the day the Founding

Fathers bravely signed the Declaration of Independence. In part

the Declaration reads “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that

all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator

with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty

and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

As Catholic citizens of the United States we have a

responsibility to live by the teachings of our Church and work to

maintain the principles upon which our country is founded. God

If your not new to Socorro and are not sure if you are registered,

please come in or call the office. Perhaps your family has grown or

your children have moved away, records

need to be updated. Children ages 18 and over

should register as adults.

Agencies served by the Matthew 25 Ministry need

donations and these may be brought to the church office

during office hours.
