FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31 DECEMBER 2014

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

In my first President's Report I had the pleasure of reporting on OMRC's third HM

Queen's Prize winner (2004: Henry Jeens) and in this my last Report, I am absolutely

thrilled to be able to congratulate his elder brother Richard on his success in 2014, as

our 4th OM winner. Clearly dates ending in 4 are good for us, as David Richards won the

Sovereign’s Prize in 1984!

As announced last year, I will be standing down as President at the 2015 AGM. It has

been a pleasure and an honour to serve as your President for the last 11 years – it has

also been great fun. I feel privileged to be only the 5th President in the 88 years of the

Club, following the illustrious names of Few, Vezey, Johnson and de Launay.

A few thanks: no club of our sort can operate without a hard core of activists, and I have

been blessed with many in that time; in particular I would like to play tribute to Tony de

Launay, my predecessor whose wise words of wisdom have guided me throughout, and

notably for his diligence in compiling and circulating our Annual Report; to Patrick Pelly

and Habib Rahman as efficient and hardworking Hon Secretaries and Treasurers as you

could ever encounter; and to our Captains David Richards, Donald Anderson and Patrick

Pelly. All the members of the Committee have come to the fore when asked and I would

like to thank all those involved in organising and providing the fare at our Annual Dinner.

Lastly I thank you, the members, for your support and encouragement.

Relationships with the School VIII remain strong. As I write, the College has been

successful in a number of full bore matches at Bisley this summer, including a

comprehensive defeat of the OMs in May. We wish Peter Finn, Martin Watkins and the

VIII every success in the Ashburton this year.

A final thank you goes to all my team mates who attended the Veterans and Annual

Dinner last year to celebrate our fortieth anniversary of our 1974 Ashburton. That year

we finished third in the Ashburton, our only loss throughout the whole year. Nine of the

eleven members of that team were able to attend – an amazing percentage after so

many years. We toasted absent friends, Richard France (Vice-Captain) and Coach

Johnnie Johnson, both sadly departed. For the record those present from my year were

Anthony Hamilton, Andrew Howes, Charles Holt, James Hardy, John Hayward, Habib

Rahman and myself (all VIII), Toby Green (IX man) and David Richards (cadet pair).

I consider that your Club remains in good health, run by a group of conscientious and

hardworking stewards, with a good and sound financial operating basis, but we could

always do with more active members participating at our events and with capturing

more College recruits and bringing them in to the sport.

For the future I commend to you Bill Richards, well-known, experienced and highly

respected in shooting circles, and who formerly served as Hon Secretary and Treasurer

of the Club, and who will be proposed by the Committee to be my successor.

CLUB NOTICES

VETERANS MATCH, THURSDAY 9 JULY, 2015

Match starts at– 5.15pm, 500 yard firing point, Century Range

Target allocations will be posted at the Long Counter in the NRA main offices, on the

range office notice board, at the pedestrian entrance to Century range 500 yards firing

point, and on the tables in front of the Ashburton Forecast scoreboard (range 14

between the 500 and 600 yards f-p). All members are welcomed and encouraged to

attend and shoot: the Captain wishes to enter five teams, so 25 shooters are needed!

All OMRC shooters must sign our club attendance register at this match: this is

to comply with our Home Office approved club record keeping responsibilities.

Please bring your competency card to show to the Captain (see also page 7).

Any member of OMRC who does not have a certificate of safety and competence will

shoot on a coached one to one basis. Please advise the Hon. Sec. as soon as

possible if you are intending to shoot. The Captain will be issuing a reminder

separately nearer to the date.

NOTICE OF ANNUAL DINNER AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 9 July 2015

The Annual General Meeting of the Old Marlburian Rifle Club will take place on Thursday

10 July 2014 at the British Commonwealth Rifle Club, National Shooting Centre Bisley,

Brookwood, Nr Woking, Surrey as soon as is convenient after the annual dinner.

2014 Annual Dinner

Following the Veterans match we hosted 36 at our Annual Dinner at the British

Commonwealth Rifle Club at Bisley. Our guest of honour was MC past President and

current Chairman Steven Bishop (PR 1969-73). Peter Finn and Martin Watkins from the

College along with 5 pupils who were shooting all or parts of the Imperial Meeting were

also present. The fare was once again kindly provided by David Richards with help from

Penny Brooks, and the drinks and wines by Dominic de Vere.

One of the themes of the Dinner was the 40th reunion of the President’s 1974 shooting

team at Bisley – the first of the VIIIs coached by Johnnie (REW) Johnson that started a

remarkable sequence of 20 or so years never out of the top 10 in the Ashburton Shield.

In 1974 we finished 3rd in the Ashburton, our only loss throughout the whole year. 9 out

of the 11 members of the team attended – a fantastic turn out. We toasted absent

friends, coach Johnnie and Richard France (the Vice Captain) both sadly departed.

Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 10 July 2014 held at British

Commonwealth Rifle Club, National Shooting Centre, Bisley.

1. Minutes of AGM 2013: ND Anderson proposed acceptance of 2013 AGM minutes and

D de Vere seconded. Approved.

2. Matters arising: President reported on the funding assistance given by the Club to

one of the boys attending this year’s Imperial meeting.

Club ties: last year’s AGM had agreed ties would be redesigned. A Gill suggested the

school leavers could be presented with an OMRC tie. Hon Sec said he’d been quoted

£200 approx for a minimum order of 590 blazer badges. Patron to approach Mundays, St

John’s of Woking.

3. 2013 Accounts: President explained the slight deterioration in the accounts, being in

part engraving, depreciation on the new LH rifle etc. Hon Sec added he was not

concerned by the loss, the Club’s reserves are adequate, especially given the small

annual fee, which is in any case voluntary. Approval proposed by WCP Richards and

seconded by ERT Jeens – approved.

4. Accounts Certifier: the president proposed the reappointment of Danielle Griffin as

the Club’s Accounts certifier, D de Vere seconded: Hon Sec expressed his thanks to

Danielle – the meeting approved her reappointment.

5. Re-Election of Officer’s: the incumbent President, Captain and Hon Secretary all

offered themselves for re-election, with the President asking the Club to consider a

replacement for him at the 2015 AGM. Patron supported the President in his desire to

see the succession considered. ERT Jeens asked whether rotation could be considered as

in other Clubs but the President suggested the OMRC might have insufficient members to

make this viable. ND Anderson proposed, DFP Richards seconded the re-election en bloc

of these officers – approved by the meeting.

6. Re-election of the Executive Committee: CM Brooks, AJCB de Launay, JH

Rahman, PD Pelly, DPF Richards, D de Vere, EC Dickson, A Gill, and RCT Jeens offered

themselves for re-election. ND Anderson proposed that they be re-elected en bloc and

WCP Richards seconded. Approved by the meeting.

7. AOB: M Watkins has approached D de Vere and A Gill for assistance and support with

the boys attending the Imperial meeting. This was welcomed by the meeting.

Captain asked whether the Club should be entering more concurrent competitions. The

meeting felt this was not appropriate.

There being no other business the President called the meeting to a close.

Richard Jeens (GM)– Winner of HM The Queen’s Prize, 2014 Edited from a piece written for NRA Journal, August 2014

Once in a while there is a dynasty that edges its name into the history books. In top

class rifle shooting we have had the Fultons, famous over successive generations. Of

course there have been individuals that have stamped their names on shooting history

for all sorts of reasons, Marjorie Foster, Keith Pilcher, Arthur Clarke and arguably others

who were individual milestones in their own right.

But here, like London buses, three come along together. Henry, Ed and now Richard

Jeens. Henry won the Prize ten years ago: Ed was second last year. On Final Saturday

2014 it was Richard who took the Blue Riband award. And if the bundle so carefully

carried by Richard in the appropriately considerate chair ride to the NRA office was any

indication, perhaps there may be another Jeens for us to watch in the future.

The first stage of the Prize on Wednesday 16 July fell in the middle of some of the

hottest and most humid weather of the year. A moderate left hand breeze kept things

interesting but it did not prevent Ant Ringer (Uppingham Veterans) and Alex Coetzee of

South Africa from each scoring 105 with 19 of their 21 shots in the central ring. Ringer

took the tie shoot for the Bronze Medal and Badge by 25.5 to 25.2. The cut for the

second stage was 102.12, with Richard and seven other OMs qualifying.

The second stage took place on Friday afternoon with some stiff and variable wind from

around 4 o’clock. James Corbett of Australia was at the top with the fine score of

150.24, just edging out Frank Bilton of Leiston Patriotic Rifle Club, the first time that he

had ever scored a maximum 150 (and 23 centrals). It was the right time to do it.

Richard was third on 149.24, very handily placed as it turned out. He was to be joined

in the final by brother Ed, Dominic de Vere and the Richards brothers.

So to the final on Saturday 19 July, and a topsy-turvey affair it was. With only two

scores of 150 carried forward and a spread of four points across the 100 strong field, it

had a little uncertainty from the start. Not only that, the wind was at first from over the

left shoulder and then straight down the range and then back over the shoulder.

‘Interestings’, as that Meerkat might say. By 1000 yards Corbett and Rob Sandlant of

Australia, Richard and Simon Carson (of Ulster) were all in the running, producing a

frenzy of nameplate swapping tantrums on the RAF run leader board.

With Corbett an early finisher at 6 off the race settled into a nail-biter between Jeens,

Sandlant and Carson each creeping up shot after shot with just 3 points dropped. But

the leader’s yellow star remained against Jeens, thanks to his better count of central

bullseyes. In a nail-biting finish each of them held to the bullseye.

Richard, Sandlant and Carson finished on 297 counted out by 44, 33 and 30 centrals

respectively with Corbett fourth after his win last year. Richard, swapping rifle for new-

born son (fast asleep all the while) was chaired off the range by a loud band and some

very considerate bearers. It was a very popular and richly deserved win for the reigning

World Long Range Champion.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Patrick Pelly reports on the Club’s activities in the 2014 season

The year’s events kicked off in March with the Spring Smallbore Match at which a

reduced team of five was completely outclassed by a high scoring College team.

At the Fullbore Match in May a team of seven OMs turned the tables although to be fair

the school were taking the opportunity to familiarise newer members with the Cadet Rifle

and were unable to get everyone through at the longer distance due to marking delays.

The Few Cigarette Case was won by John Hayward with 66.4v and Sam Day was

presented with an OMRC Tankard as highest scorer from the school.

With numbers boosted by the presence of the President’s 1974 Ashburton team-mates

we were able again to field 5 full teams for the Veterans Match in July but despite some

excellent individual scores results were disappointing with highest place going to the ‘B’

Team in 3rd place in their event. Competition to win the Vezey Cup was hotly contested

with four 50’s but in the final analysis Bill Richards narrowly won with an excellent 50.9v.

In the Imperial Meeting we entered the usual 5 concurrent team matches made up of

individual scores in specific competitions. These competitions are hotly contested by a

core group of clubs and it was especially satisfying to win the Rifle Clubs trophy which is

concurrent with Queens 1st stage and to take second place in the Bank of England

(concurrent with the Grand Aggregate). These results show the depth of talented

shooters we have in our ranks and follows last year’s success in the Marlingham.

In September there was a large turnout for the Quadrangular Match with all four

competing clubs present plus three school teams. The OMs secured a comfortable win to

regain the Tankard (last won in 2011) and also a win over the school team.

We fielded a full VIII at the Autumn Smallbore Match in November and despite high

hopes of a revenge win were once again defeated at the hands of the College VIII.

Father & son pair, John & David White, were the well-deserved recipients of the Buxton

Plate, awarded by Bill himself.

It has been especially satisfying this year to see some of our newer members

participating and also some older ones returning. I do hope some of you at least will

continue to do so. Score records for all the year’s matches and Imperial Meeting results

are shown over the following pages.

Smallbore Match v |The College

Gunner Range, 1 March 2014

Five OMs made the trip to Marlborough for the Spring .22 match on the excellent Gunner

Range. Suggestions to shoot the more difficult 10-Bull targets were resisted with

memories of our last thrashing two years ago still fresh in our minds!

The College V were selected in advance from the ten or so boys shooting and Schuy

Neuhauser set the pace with a maximum possible 100 with three others one-off on 99.

Meanwhile top scorer for the Old Boys was James Plunket on 98.

Inevitably the school maintained their winning streak at Smallbore as the full results

below show. Memo to OMs: “Must do better in November!”

School shooting continues in good form and in the safe hands of Peter Finn and coach

Martin Watkins. This is well demonstrated by the fact that both Schuy and Sam are

competing in the English Schools Home Counties Match while Josh and Will are

representing the ‘B’ Team in the same competition. We wish them all good luck.

Fullbore Match v The College

Bisley, Century Range, Sunday 18 May 2014

7 OMs gathered at Century Range Bisley for the Spring Fullbore Match against the School

in bright and sunny weather with a deceptive wind, which not only caused fishtail

conditions but also various cases of sunburn! The OMs were pleased to welcome back

David Verner-Jeffreys who, though currently a keen smallbore shooter, had not shot

fullbore since leaving in the 80s; he was accompanied by his son Robbie who is a keen

target air rifle shot.

Exams and the attendant run up had depleted the College team of its more experienced

members but this was more than made up for in numbers by younger shooters. The

School, under the careful guidance of Peter Finn and Martin Watkins, used the day to

practice with the Cadet rifle in preparation for the Schools meeting. In any case, the OMs

were grateful for the respite and were able to win for a change, and with a comfortable

margin.

Time constraints and the usual issues with slow or questionable marking meant that the

500 yard shoot was unfortunately curtailed. Top scorer for the school was Sam Day with

63.4 which earned him the Tankard, and for the OMs the winner of the Few Cigarette

Case was John Hayward with 66.4.

We wish the College team well in the Schools Meeting in July.
