Creation – The First Day

• The 1st day of creation is discussed by God in Genesis Chapter 1, verses 1 thru 4.

• We will discuss each verse individually

Creation – The First Day

• About 14.5 billion years ago, the universe as we know it began to form.

• The earth formed about 4 and a half billion years ago

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

Creation – The First Day

• Many Christians are critical of the Big Bang theory. However, study of the universe shows that it originated from a central point, and has been expanding from it ever since

Click to proceed

• The Big Bang theory is not contrary to the Creation account of Genesis. God spoke, and “Bang”, there it was…14.5 billion years ago.

Creation – The First Day

• “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved

upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2

Genesis is written from the point of view of a observer, watching the creation. Note that the location of the observer is on the face of the earth. This is critical to a correct understanding of God’s creation

Page 6: Old Earth Ministries Homeschool Series Creation The First Day

Creation – The First Day• When the earth formed 4.5 billion

years ago, it was a jumbled mass of raw materials. God shaped it into the earth

• An observer on earth’s surface would not be able to see the sun, as the vast clouds of matter in the atmosphere would block all light from reaching the surface. This is why it is referred to as “dark”, and this is why the sun “appears” to be created later, on Day Four.

Creation – The First Day

• “And God said, ‘Let there be light;’ and there was

light.” Genesis 1:3

Click to proceed

• Light first becomes apparent on the surface of the earth. No longer was “darkness upon the face of the deep” as stated in verse 2

• Due to the mass of material in the atmosphere, the sun was still not visible

Creation – The First Day

• “And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness” Genesis 1:4

Click to proceed

• Even though the sun was not visible, the earth’s rotation caused there to be distinct periods of light and darkness on the surface of the earth

Creation – The First Day

• “And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.”

Genesis 1:5

Click to proceed

• God named the two distinct periods of time

• Only God knows how long the first day of creation was. It apparently started 14.5 billion years ago, and it could have ended anywhere from 4.5 to 3.5 billion years ago.

• The first day of creation was probably about 10 to 11 billion years long

Page 10: Old Earth Ministries Homeschool Series Creation The First Day

Creation – The First Day• God uses the “morning and

evening” phrase to characterize the first day of creation as having a beginning and an ending.

• Many Christians believe in a literal translation of “day”, meaning a twenty-four hour day

• According to Strong’s Concordance, the Hebrew word used for ‘day,’ yôwm, can be interpreted as 24 hours, or as a longer period of time, or ‘age’

Page 11: Old Earth Ministries Homeschool Series Creation The First Day

Creation – The First Day

• It is important to understand that we cannot limit God to a 24-hour day. We cannot “time God” and tell Him how long creation was

Click to proceed

“…that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”

II Peter 3:8

• God is eternal, and as such, time has no meaning for Him. II Peter 3:8 makes it clear that a thousand years to God is like a day, and a day like a thousand years.

Page 12: Old Earth Ministries Homeschool Series Creation The First Day

Creation – The First Day• Christians who limit God to

creating the world in six 24-hour days must ignore the evidence from God’s creation

– Starlight has travelled millions of light-years to reach earth

– Radiometric dating shows rocks to be billions of years old

Click to proceed

• There are countless other examples from God’s very own creation, which testify to the fact that it is very old. It is impossible for God’s creation to be only 6,000 years old, as many Christians claim it is

• There is no need to fear the truth of God’s creation

Page 13: Old Earth Ministries Homeschool Series Creation The First Day

Creation – The First Day

• There is no problem in believing in an Inerrant Word of God, and believing in God’s creation being billions of years old

This concludes this module on the 1st Day of Creation
