Each year during the fall and early winter, huge numbers of duck hunters
make their way to famed Lake Okeechobee. With the lake at a relatively high water level this year there are ducks everywhere. The Monkey Box and Moon-shine Bay area of Okeechobee are always heavily hunted. Both areas however are difficult to ac-cess and in remote areas of the lake, providing excellent duck hunting opportunities. This year however there are large flocks of ducks spread throughout the entire lake.
Right here in our back yard the duck population is booming, with Florida Mallards, Teal, Ful-vous duck, Ringnecks and Wid-geon abounding. With only one week remaining in the season the ducks have been well educated. We are seeing the game birds mixed in among the thousands of coots, gallinule and moor hens, basically hiding themselves in a crowd. Each morning during the very first moments of light duck hunters start harvesting ducks, and as the morning progresses the shooting slows, then mid-morning when the fishermen start to leave one fishing spot for their next honey hole the shoot-ing starts again as the boats mov-ing about stir the ducks up once
again. There is a safety measure involved with anglers and fisher-men in such close proximity. Great care must be taken by both parties to insure everyone’s safety.
I am at a loss for words to describe the great fishing on our lake. Speck anglers are catching limits day af-ter day. Straight out the mouth of the Kissimmee River there is an armada of boats taking limits of fat specks on both minnows and jigs. Other anglers are catching specks in the Kissimmee grass lines that border the lake. However you go about it, it’s a great time to catch speck.
Bass fishing is tremendous as well, the mild days and nights has kept our water temperatures in the mid 70’s, triggering the bass to feed. Artificial baits are accounting for large numbers of bass, while the large females are falling prey to wild shiners. Please exercise cau-tion and common sense when handling bass of all sizes. Rough handling of fish such as digging a hook out of a deeply swallowed bait leads to greater fish mortality. Cut your line and leave the hook in the fish. I can’t tell you how many times we have caught bass with another hook in their mouth and often times it will come out quite easily or the fish will manage to get it out.
