Welcome
One of the principal reasons why EIC Connect Middle East has gone from strength to strength is that it is mutually beneficial for everyone involved.
Our exhibitors showcase the best that the UK energy industry has to offer, with exposure to key decision makers from the region who understand how the UK supply chain’s expertise and innovation can help them to provide safe, reliable and cost efficient energy solutions.
UK companies learn about the opportunities available in the Middle East and how to make the most of them, as well as having unrivalled access to the region’s major players, who in turn have the chance to engage face-to-face with potential future partners.
The UAE and the UK have a long and successful history of working together, dating back as far as the 1930s when British companies BP and Shell, both of whom we are delighted to have with us here today, started the important work of developing the Emirates’ huge oil and gas reserves.
As the Emirates has developed into one of the most efficient and reliable providers of energy to the world, so the relationship between the UAE and the UK has continued to flourish. In May 2008, the UK and the UAE signed a MoU to cooperate on the development of nuclear energy in Abu Dhabi.
Nuclear energy is a sector which we are giving our attention to at this year’s event. It is a great privilege to have with us the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, who will provide an update on the Barakah project, the UAE’s first nuclear power station, and explain how UK companies can support this project. This is a great opportunity for the supply
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to EIC Connect Middle East 2016 in the opulent surroundings of the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. Last year we received such an overwhelmingly positive response to this bi-annual event that we decided to run it again in 2016.
chain to synergise its efforts across the hydrocarbon and nuclear sectors, increasing cost efficiencies and profitability.
Also with us today is Philip Parham, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the UAE. Philip’s role is to foster the ongoing engagement between the two countries. He is well placed to provide our delegates with an overview on doing business in the Middle East.
Collaboration is also key to shaping the Connect Middle East programme. Representatives from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, Shell, BP, various multinational contractors and EIC members form the EIC Connect Advisory Board, which is instrumental to ensuring a successful event.
Despite global market conditions, the Middle East remains resilient and has a positive investor climate. Our project tracking database, EICDataStream, shows 659 active and future projects in the region, with 181 of them being in the power, nuclear and renewables sectors. As the regional demand for energy continues to grow, the Middle East market is showing both strength and depth. EIC Connect Middle East has been designed to enable our delegates to make the most of the opportunities available in this region which is very much open for business.
I wish you all a successful day in which existing relationships are reinforced and new and significant ones are made between operators, local partners and the UK supply chain.

Foreword
The Energy Industries Council has shown commitment to the region and to British companies operating across the entire energy supply chain. This Connect event will provide a platform for dialogue and ensure that participants gain insights into current and forthcoming opportunities.
As the region continues to operate in an era of low oil prices, there is a greater need for informed, responsive and flexible supply chains. By collaborating and sharing knowledge we can together make the savings and decisions which are required to operate effectively in these market conditions.
I am pleased to introduce and welcome you to EIC Connect Middle East 2016.
EIC Connect is now in its fifth year and continues to go from strength to strength. This year’s edition promises to be the best yet.
The UK and the UAE have worked together for decades to explore and extract oil and gas onshore and offshore. This year we have added nuclear power to the Connect agenda. The many of you who work across both the nuclear and hydrocarbon supply chains now have the opportunity to create further local economies of scale by serving the two sectors within the region.
I am grateful that the EIC, with support from ADNOC and from a strong industry advisory group has worked together once again to bring this event to Abu Dhabi. I know that it will be full of interest and value.
I look forward to meeting you all.
Philip Parham Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates

The EIC Connect Middle East conference programme is designed to make SMEs aware of what the current key issues are across the energy industry, such as, since the oil price decline, where are the major companies spending their money? Are there new technologies that are influencing spending patterns? What are the key drivers for adjustment across the industry? Is there an appetite for sharing expertise from the oil and gas community with the rising renewables sector? How do various contracting models impact SMEs?
Each session will provide an overview of key factors and challenges which will assist SMEs in adapting to the economic climate and gaining a competitive edge in this challenging market.

Time for oil and gas vendors to adapt to change?
Energy demand in the UAE alone is growing at an annual rate of approximately 9%, three times the global average, making the need to develop a reliable supply of electricity critical to the future growth of the nation.
While oil and gas remains the energy sector expected to meet this demand across the Middle East region, there are a number of emerging areas where UK companies have both the capabilities and technology already developed to capitalise on the available opportunities.
This conference session will give a clear illustration of the scale of the emerging opportunities with a particular focus on nuclear power, as well as highlighting the projects that will dominate the energy landscape in the years to come.
Panellists
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) is working to deliver safe, clean and efficient nuclear energy to the United Arab Emirates – energy that is needed to support the UAE’s social and economic growth.
ENEC aims to deliver electricity to the UAE grid in 2017. By 2020, it is projected that nuclear energy will produce nearly a quarter of the nation’s electricity needs.
Underscoring ENEC’s commitment to powering the UAE is safety – its most important priority. ENEC values above all the safety of its employees, communities and the environment.
ENEC will update the audience on the Barakah project. All four units are now under construction and ENEC is keen to update vendors on the next development phases of each of the units, how to register as a supplier and the future opportunities for UK companies to get involved.
Andrew ChampCommercial Director
Andrew has over 25 years’ experience in project development and asset investment within the energy and infrastructure sectors.
He has a successful track record of developing non-resource financed projects and leading multi-million pound negotiations, project due-diligence, and delivering results.
In his role as Commercial Director at ENEC, he is responsible for the future investment/development strategy, national electricity sector engagement, supply chain, power plant siting and enabling infrastructure for the UAE nuclear new build programme.

Current and future market conditions update
While we recognise that the falling oil prices bring with them a level of uncertainty in the UK, the Middle East remains one of the places across the world that is projecting growth in the coming year. What’s more, with a need to support production of 3 million barrels a day the industry remains a lucrative one.
In this conference session we will explore the opportunities that exist for those companies that are prepared to innovate and/or collaborate in order to move forward in this low oil price world.
Panellists
