rom the time the world began there have been stories of love and romance, but of

course, also heartache, betrayal and sacrifice. If we look at the tales told throughout history,

mythology and literature, “love” has always been a complicated affair. Many have heard the story of Adam and Eve in the

Garden of Eden, for many, the first “couple” to inhabit the earth, who were cast out of paradise to live in sin for disobedience. Then remember Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy about two young star-crossed lovers who fell in love at first sight and took their own lives rather than live without each other; although a very romantic notion, it also rings of obsession and pain. The story of Antony and Cleopatra is also about love surviving against all odds, but again, it ends in sorrow.

Literature often tells stories of love blossoming between two people, one of whom is already betrothed or married, “the love triangle” which leads to disastrous consequences. Perhaps Karma plays its part here, if you believe in such notions.

In Roman mythology, Cupid is the God of desire and affection, but is portrayed as fickle and mischievous, shooting people with his golden arrow to make them fall in love, often with heartrending results. Even Venus, the Goddess of Love, is famous for her bouts of jealous rage.

Then we have the modern day, famous relationship of Prince Charles and Diana, which ended in tragedy, and that of Brad and Angelina Jolie, “a love triangle” affair.

These stories can be likened to real life, so it is no surprise that relationships struggle, and with over 50 percent of marriages around the world ending in divorce, one wonders if there really is such a thing as true love.

Nowadays, the Western world is obsessed with the notion of romantic love, often finding no real meaning in life until sourcing “the one”. Then, perhaps, settling for second best out of disillusionment.

However, all is not lost, lessons can be learned from traditional Eastern traditions of tolerance, acceptance and forgiveness, of love being used as a tool for spiritual growth, the importance of all types of love, not just romantic ones, including that of family and friends, of the world itself, love towards all beings, and what many often forget, learning to love yourself, and celebrating it… Yes! You are an amazing woman, now believe it! Love, in its truest form, really does make the world go round.

All you need is love… or is that just a myth we tell ourselves? At the end of the day, no matter how rubbish, stressful or tiring that day is,

sometimes a hug or a kiss from someone makes it that whole lot better.

Yes, this month is Valentine’s Season — for some it is represents that dreaded day when you feel obliged to buy your other half a bunch of roses, or that Hallmark card that everyone else in Bahrain is probably receiving… for others however, it could be that one day you have been saving up for — that one day you have been waiting for to prove how much that special someone really means to you.

I, however, am a Valentine’s cynic. Every year “the most romantic day of the year” has got receptively worse, and I have a strange feeling this pattern will continue throughout the duration of my life. Don’t get me wrong though, I know a large volume of people who LoVE this day, and in Bahrain there are plenty of options where you can go to celebrate it. Valentine’s means that all the restaurants in Bahrain are pulling out all the stops to make the day extra special; whether you want to book into Boudoir at Kempinski, indulge at Dessange, or indulge in the delights of Paul’s treats — just make sure that you have a great evening.

This february is another example of how events and parties are starting to take

off in Bahrain in 2012. We had the Airshow last month, which was a HUGE success (perhaps not for our poor eardrums!) but what’s lined up for the next few weeks? The BKS Photography Club have lined up a new competition called Beautiful Bahrain; the DHL Bahrain Netball league are raising money for a fantastic cause and Coral Bay are hosting some cracking parties: all worth getting involved with.

And — it is never too late to make a change. for once in my life, I have managed to stick to mine for a WHoLE MoNTH! I have kicked the smokers’ habit, remained T-total and my Paleo challenge has gone so well that I have decided to adopt it full-time! Well done me!

TOP TIPSBeing a lady in red oozes style and sexiness, and you can be assured that you will make a statement and turn heads, if you can pull off this bold look. Buy the best quality outfit you can afford, making sure the cut flatters your figure and the shade compliments your skin tone. Wear red lipstick, choosing a shade that matches the colour of your outfit.

If you don’t feel comfortable wearing a dress, go for an elegant trouser suit, which will still cause a stir. You can match your red outfit with a sizzling hot bag and heels. If you haven’t got the confidence to go red in full, choose black with red accessories. These two shades make an eye-catching combination.

Art & Culture

CelebratingA dynamic woman with many talents, Marwa Rashid Al Khalifa is an artist taking part in the Bahrain Annual Fine Art Exhibition, entitled ‘Woman’. Mobeena Inam sits down with her to discuss her inspirational work.

Women

26 Ohlala! I February 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

“Most women agree that they are sensitive and like to be ‘handled with care’.”

Page 29: Ohlala! Bahrain February 2012

27

ynamic, diverse, eloquent, elegant, articulate and artistic

are all words, which can describe Marwa Rashid Al Khalifa, a

Bahraini female artist. This young mother of three finds time to be

involved in the family business, do volunteer work and be an accomplished artist.

Marwa serves as the Vice Chair of the Raja School Board, an institution she attended as a young girl. She went on to do Communication Studies at Emerson College, Boston (USA), after which she returned home to Bahrain and worked in Advertising. She is one of the artists participating in the currently ongoing Thirty-eighth Bahrain Annual Fine Art Exhibition at the Bahrain National Museum. The theme for this exhibition is WOMAN and Marwa submitted three pieces of work from which one was selected for display. Her passion for working with mixed media led her to create this piece from a wooden cargo box she collected from a cargo depot. She gave it a high gloss finish to represent glamour and femininity in women and humorously compares it to “a hundred layers of lip gloss”.

The words ‘Glass’, ‘Handle with Care’, ‘Up’ and ‘Fragile’ were all already imprinted on the box. “They reminded me of the various aspects of a woman. Also, for me, they resonated the essence of the Hadeeth in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised to handle a woman with gentle care lest she breaks under pressure.” The message Marwa wants to convey is that women are sensitive and emotional but very strong at the same time. “This strength is represented by the wooden media I have used. Also, the word ‘Up’ imprinted on the box represents a woman’s confidence, strength and the presence she holds when in company.”

Initially, Marwa was not sure how women would respond to the message conveyed in this piece of work, but she has been getting extensive positive feedback from female audiences at the exhibition.

Most women agree that they are sensitive and like to be ‘handled with care’.

Marwa believes Bahraini women play a critical role in the contemporary social world. “Bahraini society allows women to flourish to their maximum potential. It’s really up to the woman what she wants to achieve,” she proudly declares from her own experience. “Our women also contribute at a global level,” she goes on to say, and illustrates the example of Sheikha Haya, a lawyer with her own law firm who has also been involved in the UN, as well as being Bahrain’s ambassador to France earlier on. Such accomplished Bahraini women challenge stereotypical notions largely created by the international media that often portrays very negative stereotypes of Arab women. Marwa believes that, “We — Bahraini women — can dispel the myths through knowledge and confidence.”

From a childhood hobby, Art became Marwa’s passion and she studied it at International Baccalaureate level, working specifically with mixed media. She visits many art exhibitions and finds inspiration in various art forms. “I’m keen to attend the David Hockney exhibition in London this month. He paints huge landscapes, which inspire me. I’d also love to go to an Art Biennale — that’s my next venture,” she declares passionately.

Marwa loves incorporating paper in her art to create diverse textures. A board member of the Mother & Child Welfare Society, she describes their Recycling Palm Paper project, which involves Bahraini women creating paper from date palm leaves. “I’d like to modernise this project by creating embossed stationery and give it international exposure,” she says.

In addition to mixed media, Marwa is a keen photographer. Her last project involved photographing Muharraq in the twenty-first century and the exhibition was held at Bin Mattar House in December 2011.

Her advice to budding artists is to, “Pursue your passion despite the challenges, keep up your skills and don’t ever let them stagnate. Enjoy your work and don’t be afraid to explore new mediums.”

“We — Bahraini women — can

dispel the myths through knowledge and

confidence.”

It’s no exaggeration to say Claudia Hardt, Director of Public Relations for The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa is an extraordinary woman. Her achievements are vast. hilst at the helm of promoting a prestigious,

international hotel brand, every minute of every day has an appointed

task, yet Claudia Hardt is always willing to share a moment with anyone who

crosses her path. With such a warm, endearing personality and radiant smile, it’s clear that Claudia

is ideally appointed in the role of Director of Public Relations. In 2008 she was awarded the title of ‘Marketing/PR person of the Year’ by Hotelier Middle East. Despite having a few alternative career options upon leaving high school in her native country, Germany, her instincts led her to pursue her passion for the Hospitality industry, and she happily admits she has never regretted a day since she made that decision.

You were previously working at the Ritz Carlton in Bahrain. What brings you back to the island?Claudia Hardt. I was offered the great opportunity to take on new projects for the company, which brought me back to Bahrain. We have many exciting developments coming up this year here at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa, which I am proud of being part of it. It's a pleasure being back and taking on new tasks having the chance from a PR perspective to contribute meaningfully. What does your new role involve?C.H. My role involves all press, communications and public relations efforts of the hotel, for the local, regional, and of course, for the international market. Travelling plays an important part as well and to represent the brand and the hotel at trade shows or international public relations meetings. I will also have the opportunity to interact with other Ritz-Carlton hotels within the region. Being a team player it's key to support wherever requested in order to maximise brand awareness.

30 Ohlala! I February 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

What career path did you have in mind when starting out?C.H. I was raised within a family who took pleasure in travel and who enjoyed culinary experiences, therefore I developed a taste for both at an early age. During my A levels, I already had a clear idea that I wanted to work either in the hospitality industry or as an architect. I also had a passion for writing. In my teens I was Managing Editor of the school magazine which won an award to visit the publishing hub of Hamburg and experienced a two day trip there, which included spending time at one of Germany's most respected business magazines, ‘Der Spiegel’ and also at 'DPA' the German news Agency. It was a great experience. I also wrote articles on events for a specialist sports magazine.

How did you qualify to specialise in your field?C.H. I began my career straight from high school by serving an apprenticeship at a 5-star resort in Bavaria, where I gained experience in each sector of the industry. I also studied part time and qualified as a certified PR Consultant awarded by the German Academy of Public Relations in Frankfurt. After qualifying I was employed as the Banqueting Manager, whereby I assisted the Hotel Manager coordinating events and banqueting; wedding arrangements became my speciality at that time.

What kind of work experience did you gain after?C.H. I was offered a great opportunity to work aboard a major 5-star plus, European Cruise liner as a Purser, carrying out a series of administrative responsibilities. Within a team of seven I had a rotating role as cashier, information officer, official dispatch, immigration/visa duties and even IT amongst other things. Such a position allowed me to travel worldwide; to areas such as Kenya, Singapore, Panama, Venezuela and so many more. Upon completing my time on the Cruise liner, my plan was to work in Spain, which I did for a period of time before applying to enrol at the popular Heidelberg Hotel School, where I graduated with a degree in Hotel Business Management. It is usual in the hospitality industry in Germany to take an apprenticeship and work for four years before applying to a College of Higher Education. Whilst there, I was appointed as Press Person to run the Hotel magazine. I took every opportunity to engage in as many social events as I could which allowed me to meet many people within the industry. Whatever experience I was offered I took it. I involved myself in all social aspects and I produced the school Year Book. I graduated in 1999 and I’m pleased to say they still use me as a role model for the Heidelberg School.

What originally led to your arrival in the Gulf ?C.H. After graduating in 1999, I was employed by The Ritz-Carlton Schlosshotel in Berlin. By that time I was certain I wanted to work in the area of Hotel PR and I accepted a great opportunity to work as PR Coordinator within a beautiful historical location, which had been transformed into a Ritz-Carlton hotel. This fuelled my passion for history too, as I love palaces, castles and historical buildings. From the Schlosshotel Berlin I went to Istanbul to assist in the building of a new PR department for the new Ritz-Carlton development there.

After my time in Istanbul, I worked as Director of National and International PR for one year pre-opening and a year after opening at The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin at Potsdamer Platz which was my first assignment to be responsible for Public Relations for a hotel opening - an exciting period in my life.

From there I moved to Hong Kong as Director of Communications for two and a half years. I had so far only travelled to the Middle East for pleasure, but hadn’t thought about working here until an opportunity arose in 2007 to work in Bahrain. I decided to take it and stayed here as Director of PR for four years. I have a particular passion for this part of the world and when another opportunity came along to oversee two properties in Qatar, Sharq Village & Spa and The Ritz-Carlton, Doha, I thought “Why not?”

Are there any major differences between the hospitality industry in the Gulf region and Europe, regarding women in major roles?C.H. From the first moment I stepped into the Gulf region I felt very welcomed. I have faced no gender issues whatsoever concerning my position. In fact, as a woman, I have been given a lot of respect, possibly more respect here than elsewhere. I feel as long as you give respect to others, respect will come back to you. I have a personal interest in the Middle Eastern culture and I have the feeling that I will be able to achieve something good while I am here with so many opportunities on offer. Who or what motivates and inspires you?C.H. The ladies and gentlemen that I am surrounded by each day inspire and motivate me. I love to communicate with people and my job now allows combining my passion for the hotel industry with writing. This PR role allows my passions to come together. I really enjoy learning about different cultures and meeting people from various countries. I regard each of the hotels that I work in as ‘my babies’; they mean a great deal to me and I really enjoy what I do.

How do you relax in your spare time? C.H. When I get the chance of some leisure time, I love to travel. I also enjoy the arts and visiting exhibitions and several of my friends are artists. Plus I have two boating licences; an offshore yacht licence and a power boat licence, so I enjoy boating as a way to relax.

What five words would you use to describe yourself ?C.H. Passionate, loyal, reliable, honest, genial.

Any future aspirations?C.H. I believe my strengths are in PR. I love working with media people. They motivate me. Who knows what’s next? I’m always ready to take on new challenges. For the past twenty years in my professional experience I can say I don’t regret a single day of it. I have learned lessons from it. The best you can expect is to be confident and happy and take the next step.

What advice would you give other women who want to pursue a similar career?C.H. Believe in yourself and never give up, although you may need to be patient. When you truly focus on something the results will come. Passion is the most important thing and having that you will succeed.

Which motto do you adhere to?C.H. Embrace experiences. Live life to the fullest and be grateful for what you have.

Nerina Pallot remains one of the most talented and also most underrated artists currently

writing and performing today. Ben Whittaker met up with the singer/songwriter to discuss

her latest album release, Year of The Wolf.

ast time I spoke to Nerina Pallot

she was preparing for the launch of

her third album and full of positive notes

surrounding her recent marriage to husband,

Andy Chatterley. Two years later and with

her latest release, Year of the Wolf, a lot has changed for this Ivor Novello and Brit Award nominated artist, with one episode in September 2010 proving to be what she says is the most significant development in her life.

“I have a child. A baby boy named Wolfgang!” The title of the album becomes immediately apparent. “He was born in September 2010 and this album was really inspired by him. I was pregnant as I was writing it and I just about finished it before going into labour.”

So was there significance to the name?

“Andy and I were sat watching the movie Amadeus about the life of Mozart, who is one of my favourite classical composers — the day we found out I was pregnant and decided on Wolfgang Amadeus there and then.

“Eighteen months on and I never envisioned how much your life changes — not just from the moment you realise you’re pregnant — but right up to the birth itself and beyond. It’s an instantaneous transition from being responsible for just you, to being suddenly responsible for another life and knowing that from thereon, it will always be the case.

“I got used to him being inside me and as he grew, so did the substance of my album. It was almost as if they developed together!

“I certainly noticed my voice change over the term of the pregnancy. A few weeks after he was born I returned to the studio and suddenly realised that a little more power had returned to my voice.

“It also changed the way I thought about and wrote my songs and there are several tracks such as History Boys and If I Lost You Now accurately reflect this. Having a child makes it very difficult to leave him. I’ve only spent one night away from Wolfie since he was born, and all I kept thinking about was getting back home to him. It makes one of the key components of my career — doing concerts

and gigs — a little harder.”Does that mean she is thinking about scaling down her

output?“Quite the opposite. Wolfie has given me fresh impetus

and a new sense of direction that I have never known before. I feel that now I have more of a reason than ever to focus on my future.”

Produced by Bernard Butler — formerly of Suede — Year of the Wolf has a much more defined and edgy style to it when compared to the out and out pop feel of The Graduate but is filled with some instantly accessible tunes, especially the first single Put Your Hands Up and Turn Me On Again.

Turn Me On Again is all about the courtship; the early stages of the chase. In many ways that’s the best part of the whole dating experience. I always seem to find time

to write about the intimate side of things,” she reflects with a mischievous smile.

Nerina also enjoys a successful career as a writer for other artists and her most recent collaboration with Kylie Minogue on her album Aphrodite, where she co-wrote the title track, is just the latest in a series of works that she hopes to continue.

It is at this point that she also confesses to an ambition that she would like to envisage before she hangs up her guitar, stating, “I would love to write a piano concerto before I make my half-century, although I don’t think that is likely to happen any time soon. Still, it’s something to aim for if I ever decide to take a step back from the pop world.”

With four albums and over a decade in the limelight, she could be considered a veteran in many circles, so I pressed her on her thoughts over how she saw the industry developing.

“There are still a great number of hugely talented young artists out there and I think that will always be the case, with a select group of megastars still jostling for the top spots. However, I think making a long term career is going to be more difficult.”

With Year of The Wolf, Nerina Pallot has produced possibly her most accomplished album to date and Bernard Butler’s influence on the production is clearly evident, as she tells me, “Bernard lives close by and he helped return that element of rock to my music that was perhaps missing on The Graduate. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”

Nerina’s latest single, All Bets Are Off is out on iTunes now and you can catch a look at her new video on her website.

“I never envisioned how much your life changes — not just from the moment you realise you’re

pregnant — but right up to the birth itself

and beyond.”

Fair Skin: Pick a classic red shade without hints of pink.

Medium Skin: Choose a darker red to match the undertones of your skin colour.

high heels:Friend or Enemy?

Page 65: Ohlala! Bahrain February 2012

63

o doubt stepping into a glorious pair of

louboutins, Manolos and Choos gives us an instant

feel good factor. We look and feel fabulous! However,

could it be possible that while our high heels are a marvellous

contribution to our wardrobe, they are in fact a catastrophe for body biomechanics?

C.B. It’s a problem that many of my clients suffer from. In my experience more often than not women suffer from sore knees due to the design of their pelvis. Basically, women have a wider pelvis than men to allow for an easier birthing process. This can place more stress down the outside of the thigh, and lead to tightness and pain at the knee when it moves. The correct name for this condition is ‘Patellofemoral Syndrome’ (PFS) but it’s not as serious as it sounds.

Wearing high heels causes an even bigger tilt to the pelvis as well as a forward shift in the centre of gravity, which places the knees under more stress. Realistically, it’s unlikely most women will stop wearing high heels. Therefore, the focus should be maintaining a proper balance of the muscles in the legs to ensure that they are strong enough to support everyday activities, such as picking up small children and walking around in a pair of four-inch heels.

The kneecap must follow a particular path when we move; if it deviates from this path it causes pain. Sitting down, bending down to pick something up, walking up or down stairs are common causes of pain.

Unless something is structurally wrong with the knee, it could be a simple case of loosening off the outside of the thigh through Massage or Self Myofascial Release (foam rolling). Although initially quite tender, this should ease with practice. Another important factor in correcting this imbalance is static stretching, which should be held for 20 to 30 seconds.

Consistency is key. Attempt to work through any initial discomfort and as the tightness decreases so will the pain. This can be done with a progressive exercise programme that is easy and comfortable. Follow on by working on your inner Quad (front thigh) muscle. Example: Sit on the floor legs out in front of you. Place your first two fingers on your VMO (above and to the inside of your knee cap). Tighten quad muscles and imagine pulling your knee cap upward towards your hip. Hold the contraction for up to 10 seconds and make sure you feel VMO working (aim to contract that muscle first). It’s important to keep the muscle switched on and working to prevent the knee cap from moving all around. Focus on breathing and remind yourself “This will get better.”

For a step-by-step guide visit http://TheInjuredKnee.com, a four part series called “Cure Your Knee Pain in Less Than a Week”, which offers details about this condition and a step-by-step guide on how to alleviate the problem.

Taking advice from a qualified professional, such as a physiotherapist, will help guide you towards recovery. You should stop if your knee starts to feel worse and contact your specialist for advice and to discuss future treatment.

Health Promotion

Astroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the rapid loss of brain functions due to disturbance in the blood

supply to the brain. A stroke can either be due to ischemia, the lack of blood flow normally caused by a blockage, for example a blood clot, or by a hemorrhage — a leakage of the blood. The latter type therefore causes blood to leak into the brain causing it to malfunction. The signs of the malfunctioning can consist of an inability to move one or more limbs on one side of the body, inability to understand or

formulate speech, or an inability to see one side of the visual field.

A CVA can be the result of a variety of factors more commonly associated with smokers, drug users and alcoholics. You are also at more of a risk of suffering a stroke if you are diabetic or if a member of your family has experienced a stroke before. The risk of a stroke is also heightened by more medically related factors — it could be a result of atherosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries) or when fatty cholesterol deposits are found on the artery walls. It could also result from heart disease, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure,

gout and postural hypotension, or if an individual has a history of transient ischemic attacks.

The symptoms of a stroke very much depend on which area of the brain is affected. The most common symptom is weakness or paralysis to one side of the body with partial or complete loss of voluntary movement or sensation in an arm or a leg. There can also be speech problems and the weakening of facial muscles sometimes resulting in drooling. Numbness or tingling is also very common. A stroke involving the base of the brain can affect balance, vision,

A staggering 15 million people worldwide suffer from a stroke every year. Of these, five million cases result in death and another five million are left permanently disabled. Dr Qusai Solaiman Alhaddad, a Specialist Neurologist at Bahrain Specialist hospital, gives us the ins and outs of the life threatening condition.

64 Ohlala! I February 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Surviving a Stroke Dr Qusai Solaiman Alhaddad

swallowing, breathing and even result in unconsciousness.

Diagnosing a CVA involves examining a patient’s medical history and carrying out a medical check up. Tests are carried out in order to search for treatable causes of a stroke and help prevent further brain damage. A CAT scan of the brain is often carried out to highlight the bleeding into the brain. The scan can also rule out some other conditions that often mimic the characteristics of stroke. An echocardiogram (testing the heart’s soundwave) may be done to test for the source of blood clots or a carotid ultrasound can be used to narrow the carotid artery. One of the most important tests is a blood test as certain blood proteins can increase the chance of a stroke. As well as the mentioned tests, rehabilitation and surgical procedures are available if patients require further medical assistance.

Suffering from a stroke does not necessarily mean that life comes to a grinding halt. It is imperative that every individual should reduce, if not delete, the high risk factors in their lives — with such alterations the chances of suffering from a CVA can be significantly reduced.

FOODING

66 Ohlala! I February 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

The way to your loved one’s heart is surely via a fabulous Valentine’s dinner. Even better if it’s created by your own fair hand… with a little help from a Five Star Chef of course. Ohlala! invites you to join Chef Konstantinos Panou, the brand new Chef de Cuisine at Mykonos restaurant, InterContinental Doha, whose new menu based on the concept of ‘good Mood Food’ will add fabulous flavour to your St Valentine’s celebration.

Originating from Athens, Greece, Chef Konstantinos knows a thing or two about fabulous Mediterranean cuisine. At an early age he spent his summer seasons in the Greek countryside enjoying the spoils of his

grandfather’s home-grown vegetables and his grandmother’s cooking. At 18 he joined the Culinary Institute and four years later perfected his culinary skills in various hotels and trendy restaurants around Athens. Forward to 2006, Chef Konstantinos began working at Jumeirah Company’s Pisces Restaurant, which was voted best Mediterranean French Seafood restaurant in

Dubai two years running. After returning back to his roots for a short break working in a traditional Greek trattoria, the Middle East called out again, fortunately for us, we can delight in Chef Konstantinos’ innovative new ideas at Mykonos. “Certain ingredients contribute to our feeling of wellbeing, which is my inspiration behind the Good Mood Food concept,” explains Chef Konstantinos. He believes that fresh, healthy ingredients are a major factor as to how a meal can affect our mood. To elevate the mood of your Valentine, recreate three flavourful dishes from Chef ’s Good Mood Food menu soon to be introduced at Mykonos restaurant.

ExPERIENCE CARNIVAL IN VENICE: ITALY“Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go,” quotes Truman Capote, writer and in his heyday an avid visitor to Venice. In other words, it’s a treat to indulge in, and indulge you will if you head to this fabulous floating city with its maze of canals and wondrous architecture; a wealth of historical landmarks and centuries old cultural drama await you. A subject of countless paintings, films, literature and scandal; it’s a challenge for anyone not to submerge themselves into the magical ambience that surrounds one of the world’s most romantic, artistic and theatrical destinations.

Located in Northern Italy, the enchanting city of Venice is situated along the Adriatic Sea and is made up of over 100 islands linked together by exquisite bridges and incorporates six districts positioned amidst a central lagoon. No surprise then that water travel is the main mode of transport. Arrive at Marco Polo Airport on the mainland and a shuttle bus will take you to the Alilaguna water-bus jetty where you choose which route to travel to San Marco, the hub of popular Venetian attractions.

With a labyrinth of charming alleyways intertwining with canals, walking from one treasured attraction to the next is a pleasant way to appreciate the wealth of Venetian art and rich architecture. Souvenir shops laden with carnival masks, ornaments created from renowned Murano glass, designer outlets and unique boutiques, you’ll discover along the way.

February is carnival season so combine your Valentine celebration with flamboyant, masquerade festivities, which include gala dinners, grand balls and theatrical events. Dress up and party whilst savouring Carnival atmosphere as you snuggle up on a scenic gondola ride along the Grand Canal.

A plethora of unique restaurants nestle within cobbled walkways where an intimate candlelit supper will enhance your Valentine’s theme. Relish iconic landmarks by strolling along the main square, Piazza San Marco. Enjoy magnificent views from Venice’s oldest and most prestigious bridge the ‘Rialto’. If palaces, galleries and museums delight your senses there are countless. The impressive Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the Basilica San Marco perfectly symbolise Venetian culture.

No visit to Venice is complete without stopping off at the illustrious Harry’s Bar, which for decades has been a preferred destination of European Aristocracy and a legendary haunt for artists and celebrities who sip Harry’s signature cocktail ‘The Bellini’. There you can toast Venice, St Valentine, carnival and romance.

Although an expensive destination to visit, accommodation is available to suit all budgets. www.venice-carnival-italy.com

DESERT ISLAND PARADISE: MALDIVESImagine you and your Valentine castaway on a desert island for days of unbridled romance. A cocktail of sundrenched sandy beaches, sparkling turquoise waters and tranquil palm tree hideaways is what you’ll be awarded if you hot foot it to the ultimate desert island paradise, the Maldives. Set in the heart of the equatorial Indian ocean this archipelago of coral reefs is the setting for an unforgettable romantic retreat for lovers who ‘want to be alone’ basking amidst natural beauty and incredible picture-postcard scenery.

Having arrived by speedboat or seaplane, which is the only mode of transport connecting these lush inhabited and uninhabited isles, you’ll endure little effort to enjoy the stunning backdrop of the best that Mother Nature can offer whatever month of the year you visit, as the climate is visitor friendly all year round.

The aquatic life is second to none with a breathtaking underwater landscape boasting high visibility of the myriad fish species and underwater creatures where divers and snorkelers will find true paradise.

Sweep your Valentine away to one of the many uninhabited desert islands and savour the solitude and the scenery. The appropriately heart shaped Addu Atoll lies in the southernmost area of the country; central Malé the ‘capital’ promotes the modern face of the Maldives, while the Southern Atolls is an up and coming, pristine and less commercial area, which nevertheless boasts three regional airports with links to Malé.

Accommodation ranges across high brand resorts, boutique abodes, guesthouses and ecologically sound hotels. Vacationing in the Maldives is expensive, so be prepared to splash out in more ways than just frolicking in the lagoons. However, while you romance beneath a holhuashi (an island gazebo) you’ll no doubt treasure the experience as priceless. www.visitmaldives.com

TRAVEL TIPS Check visa requirements; a valid entry and stay visa may be required by foreign citizens. Buy comprehensive travel/medical insurance before departing for your holiday. Certain areas of the Maldives are alcohol-free plus some resorts are adult-only. Check electricity voltage; take an adaptor and transformer for appliances. Drink only bottled water not tap water. Currencies: Venice – Euro (€). Maldives –Rufiyaa (MRF). Buenos Aires – Argentine Pesos (ARS).

TANgO IN BuENOS AIRES: ARgENTINALabelled the ‘Paris of South America’ and the birthplace of the most sensual dance, the Tango, Buenos Aires in Argentina is one of the most romantic destinations in which to wine, dine and dance with your Valentine.

As a capital city with a multicultural history, Buenos Aires caters to the vacation needs of all, and Valentines are no exception. Prime tourist attractions are found downtown at Plaza de Mayo in the heart of Buenos Aires and feature iconic landmarks. Enjoy Puerto Madero’s waterfront views and open boulevards plus a wealth of cuisine. Steal a romantic moment on the Puente del Mujer (Woman’s Bridge). Ordinarily, a cemetery is an unlikely spot for a romantic stroll and a photo opportunity, nevertheless the Cementerio de Recoleta is popular with tourists who saunter along this famous burial ground to view impressive statues and tombstones of the elite and famous including the grave of ‘Evita’ Peron.

Alive and kicking is the vibrant cultural heritage, which Buenos Aires showers upon its visitors. A metropolis for shopping, activities and nightlife is all very well, but Tango (also known as the three minute love affair) takes priority. Tango shows are in abundance across the city; alternatively seek out an authentic Milonga (a place or event where Tango is danced) and learn the art of lustful dancing from the locals.

Buenos Aires has a range of accommodation to suit all Valentine budgets and is easily accessible via Ezeiza International airport. www.bue.gov.ar.com

Beautiful styling, generous luxury features and engine power to match — what is there not to love about this car?

hYuNDAI gENESIS 2012Hyundai is not a brand traditionally associated with opulence, but what the Korean carmakers have done with this car is just that. The Genesis has everything that any luxury-loving lady could desire, from the sculpted and fluid exterior to the spacious and quiet cabin. High-quality leather covers the dash, doors, consoles and most other points that you'll come in contact with. Soft and snug seats keep the driver and passengers alike cradled in comfort.

The Genesis comes standard filled with a host of upscale lavish features, such as keyless entry and ignition, rear view camera, car parking sensors, auto-dimming rear view mirror, dual zone automatic climate control, navigation system, Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone system, auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB interface, touch-screen interface, excellent surround sound stereo system, cooling and heating systems on the seats, and more.

Under the bonnet you have a 3.8 litre V6 engine producing a whopping 333 horsepower, which delivers a wonderfully strong and effortless acceleration. And it is fast; from 0-100 kilometres per hour in 6.2 seconds,

which is really good considering that the Genesis is actually quite a large sedan car. Driving is thoroughly enjoyable with smooth handling and the car is very responsive and steady, while still having a sporty feel.

The 2012 Hyundai Genesis has a five-star safety rating. It comes standard with antilock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability controls, active front head restraints, front and rear side airbags and side curtain airbags, as well as smart cruise control to help maintain safe driving distance while the feature is engaged.

There is even more good news for all serious fashionistas out there; it is possible to order a limited edition Prada Hyundai Genesis! Si, si, si, the super fashionable Italian label has collaborated with Hyundai to create an even more opulent car. Now I am just waiting for Prada to produce a Genesis handbag, which would be cute arm candy to carry around…

In the Genesis, Hyundai has created a car in which luxury, comfort, performance and power exist in equilibrium with exceptional value. Simply put, I cannot think of another car that offers so much for so little. Sounds too good to be true? Go and check it out for yourself !

February happy Birthday Ms aquariusFebruary will see you feeling at the peak of good spirits as this month (which is traditionally the month of Aquarius) opens a whole host of emotional possibilities. An admirer seeking to attain more than just friendship is waiting in the shadows and may simply be biding their time before the decisive move. You need to think about how you might deal with the situation when matters come to a head. Towards the end of the month you may take a short break away — possibly just to think matters over or simply only for a deserved rest — and during this time you are likely to uncover a surprising secret, which you will find difficult to deal with at first.

aquarius — at a glanceAquarians are extremely open-minded, humanitarian, tolerant, extroverted and experimental. They are also artistic, independent and eccentric; full of brilliant ideas. On the negative side they can be emotionally detached, rebellious and rather unpredictable.

pisCes (February 19 – March 19)February means a change in romantic interests for you. There is a good chance that any existing relationship that has been struggling to continue will finally buckle under the strain, and it may very well see the situation end in tears. Although this event will be painful to come to terms with, the initial loss will give way to a renewed

sense of determination to set your life back on track. Additionally, if you have been contemplating greener fields and different pastures then an unexpected opportunity to break free of your restrictions once and for all could present itself around the 15. Don’t be afraid to follow your instincts since they could well lead you to greater things.

virGo (august 23 — september 22)Soul searching will be something you are engaged quite a lot in over the first few months of 2011 as the reality of your future becomes more apparent. It might seem initially daunting, but in the long run you will no doubt reap the rewards and by the

end of the year, not only will you be a very different person, you’ll also find yourself in a very different place to the one you start the year in. On a different note, a male dressed in blue will make his way into your life around the third bringing a smile to your face, but be careful not to trust everything he says until you have properly analysed the situation. Finally, your stand out month is September in matter of finance.

Taurus (april 20 – May 20)Love is never far from the mind of most Taureans and that isn’t surprising when one considers Venus has such an influence on your sign. This Valentine’s Day is likely to offer up a mixed bag of emotional results, depending on whether you

are already in a longstanding relationship or on the cusp of something new. Things are likely to work better for those in more established partnerships, so if you are embarking on something new then just take it slowly. Work wise you could be offered a new position completely out of the blue and you should give it some serious consideration because there is great potential if you are ready to embrace the challenge.

aries (March 20 – april 19)It’s the month of love, so it is no surprise that you have relationships on your mind this February. For some of you this could be painful as it could bring home the reality of a recent breakup. However, an offer to dinner with an admirer may

provide you with a welcome boost, but beware of misleading a friend into believing you want something more. Your vulnerable state could leave you open as prey to some unscrupulous individuals, so be sure of people’s intentions ahead of any decision. On matters financial, you will receive a welcome boost this month that will set your mind to rest and allow you to focus on other more creative pursuits.

GeMini (May 21 – june 20)Beware this month of allowing your ego to get the better of you and perhaps even causing a major rift in a relationship. You may have good reason to feel proud of yourself because of a good decision at work, but don’t blow your own trumpet too hard as the sound may not suit

everyone’s ears. If you have been concerned over the direction in which a relationship happens to be moving, take the time to sit down with your partner and talk the matter through. Hiding the problems is not going to make them go away. If you want this Valentine’s Day to be a good one then deal with the outstanding issues now rather than later.

CanCer (june 21 – july 22)For the last few weeks you may have been feeling under the weather and the strain of family matters may be wearing heavily upon you. You need to reassess your role and ignore the guilt others are trying to impress upon you. If the

need arises, a break away from your environment — even for a few days — will do you a great deal of good. Take time out with a partner or loved one just to refresh your perspective and put a little investment in the things that really count. Matters financial will see you applying for a loan, perhaps to purchase a new car, but shop around because the first thing you come across will not be the one to go for.

Leo (july 23 – august 22)The seeds of financial success are yours to plant in February with rich rewards set to come in the middle part of the year. A young child is proving particularly loving and may lead you to reflect on your good fortune where family members are concerned. A surprise piece of good news will

reach you around the 17. Concerning a matter which has proven to be a particular worry over recent months. It is the starting point for a consolidation of your efforts to achieve the goals that you seek to attain. You may feel slightly low over a sick relative or friend around the 6 and any support you can give will be warmly appreciated.

virGo (august 23 — september 22)February may see you in some conflict over a relationship, which might not appear to have any future. Be sure not to stay with a partner purely for financial or material reasons. A reunion around the seventh may bring home the true significance of an earlier decision in

connection with such a dilemma. On the work front, this is a good time to seek out a new position or perhaps approach a role that has become somewhat mundane with new vigour. Someone influential is watching your progress and a fresh attitude may bring rich rewards. A relative will sting your pride and hurt you around February 19 but a chance of redemption lies waiting soon after so open yourself to forgiveness.

CapriCorn (dec 22 – january 19)There is a face in the crowd that has an interested eye on certain Capricorn’s out there and it could point towards relationships and a major change in how your love life may develop in 2012. Of primary importance are your own character and the need for you to assert your authority on the

situations that exist around you. At the moment there is a degree of hesitation and insecurity about you — both flaws that you should seek to eradicate from your make-up if you stand any hope of making a success of matters emotional this year. On other matters, the signs are good for an interview on February fifth, so think positive, believe in yourself and that new job could be yours.

saGiTTarius (nov 22 – dec 21)Sacrifice is a big feature of your reading this month. However, the sacrifice does not come from you, but a partner whose generous spirit opens the way for you to take advantage of a situation you would have otherwise never been able to consider. Don’t be too quick to forget what

has been done for you here as not many would have done the same in similar circumstances. The best way to show your appreciation would be to perhaps be a little more affectionate and loving than usual. On the work front, you might find yourself involved in a minor accident as a practical joke backfires and you end up nursing a bruised ankle. Watch your step on February 21.

sCorpio (october 23 – november 21)Yours is a passionate and very physical sign and as such, you are usually very affected by this time of the year, with Valentine’s Day being something you generally enjoy celebrating. However, this year it could be a case of mixed results in the romance stakes, due to the fact that other issues

have come to the fore that have diverted your attention a little. Chiefly health matters could prove to be more prominent and it may mean a few of you could even be looking at a brief stay in hospital. It’s nothing serious but it just might mean you will need to put the relationship celebrations on hold for a few weeks. Anyone for Valentine’s Day in March?!

LiBra (september 23 – october 22)Relationships are at the top of your agenda in February — both romantically and where certain relatives are involved — as you try to juggle two discontented individuals’ needs. Perhaps the answer is to stop trying to please everyone and instead forcing those concerned to put up or shut

up! The influence of Venus on your sign may point towards you being a little more careful where health is concerned and it could be that illness plays a major factor in why there is so much friction flying about you presently. A gift given out of unrequited love could also cause a dispute around February third, so if you don’t want certain people to know — keep the secret to yourself.

Dahlings. I greet you from Los Angeles. Home of Hollywood. Lights. Celebrities. E! Entertainment. And dogs. So many dogs. My previous visits were manically brief, two days here, three days there.

Never got the chance to really "be" in LA. until now. Ten days in, and I can safely say there's something quite

eerie about this place. I know. Sounds crazy compared to the giant glamazon so forcibly projected across our TV screens. Those who regularly read this column already know, I'm not one to deliver the expected. So here's a more realistic breakdown: People seem to be closer to furry creatures, than other people. There's a lot of unjustified anxiety. Loneliness. Mistrust. Morbid material obsession. Far too many failed relationships and or single folk. A strange sense of misdirection. Talent everywhere, so many of them, so lost. Caught up in dreams that have morphed into nightmares. A Hollywood haven clearly run by few, while everyone else is trying to "make it". With that, comes a lot of sad stories. Especially from waiters — when all you want to do is order some food — which can irritate, a little bit. First class crackheads stood outside of 5-star hotels. Homeless people, sleeping on these star-studded boulevards.

That's the majority perspective for you. For the few and fortunate among us, there are some fabulous shopping options. Not as eclectic as London, but cool all the same. I'm staying in West Hollywood, and Fairfax, Melrose and Robertson are all your best bets for scouring. Another plus in La La Land is the ample space available for really quite scenic walking. Spa services at your indulgence, and just a general lean toward a healthier way of life.

The weather's disobediently cold at the moment — so unlike the "sunny LA" sell. I thank God for Q14, and the life-saving, stunning and super convenient bisht I've been wearing for both comfort and "please keep me warm" purposes. The custom made robe/jacket/abaya/as you wish to call it, has been a bit of a show-stopper, with many asking where, what and how. Its vibrant tribal prints, arabesque flair and impressive detailing hails from Kuwait. Since style seems to be some kind of inborn gift over there, that comes as no surprise.

Restaurant culture plays a massive role in LA lifestyle, which makes obvious sense considering nightlife comes to a strict two-am ending. unfortunately though, the food is not that great. If you're a fan of flavour (you know, actually seasoning what you eat) then do as I did and stick to Katsuya, Koi, Phillipe Chow and a Thai local in West Hollywood which has the best peanut sauce I believe I've ever had. Forget the name. Tweet @iambougi if you really want to know. For the vegan types (not that I'm a vegetarian, but I do defer from meat when possible),

there's Veggie Grill, and Real Food Daily. Both cheap, cheerful and wholesome.

Onto what you're already very familiar with (drums please)... the glamour. Yes honeys. There's been plenty of that too. On arriving it was straight to Beverly Hills' Montage hotel for the Cinema For Peace event in honour of Sean Penn's work in Haiti. Mohammed Al Turki, Saudi film producer, passionate philanthropist and Hollywood newcomer was co-chair of the beautiful gala, which saw guests such as Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Demi Moore, and Kim Kardashian join us to raise over five million dollars for the people of Haiti. Thumbs up, all round.

Then there was the Golden Globes. Personally, I was over the moon over fellow Brit, Idris Elba's win. He's handsome, wouldn't you agree? After parties were all over Hollywood. Preferring a quieter gathering, we went to Bar Marmont, followed by LA's Soho house, which by the way, looks exactly like London's! I mean, down to the reception couch. EXACTLY the same. A few days later saw Sundance. I didn't go (snow and I hate each other) but Monsieur Mohammed's latest project, arbitrage, received raving reviews internationally (yeaaas) — which subsequently led to a ton of celebrations both in utah and back in LA. Indeed, hard work does pay off. Oh and by the way, the movie stars Richard Gere. I think that says enough.

More celebrations came in the form of birthdays too, with the formidable female force that is Estelle, and a series of wonderfully intimate soirees. We liked. Be sure to pick up her highly anticipated new LP, all of Me. In stores on February 28, 2012. We also like. And if you haven't seen the video to her latest (and greatest) single Thank you, I suggest you go onYouTube. Right now.
