Ohio Star Quilt Block Uses 3 different fabrics in a 6 inch (9 inch, 12 inch) block Cut Fabric A – Main focal fabric 5 squares – 2 ½ inches (3 ½ inches, 4 ½ inches) 1 squares 4 inches (5 inches, 6 inches) Fabric B – Inner star points 1 square 4 inches (5 inches, 6 inches) Fabric C – Outer star points 2 squares 4 inches (5 inches, 6 inches) Start by making 4 half square triangles, 2 using a Fabric A and Fabric B 2 inch square combination and 2 using a Fabric B and Fabric C 2 inch square combination.

Ohio  Star  Quilt  Block    

   Uses  3  different  fabrics  in  a  6  inch  (9  inch,  12  inch)  block    Cut    Fabric  A  –  Main  focal  fabric    

5  squares  –  2  ½  inches  (3  ½  inches,  4  ½  inches)  1  squares  -­‐  4  inches  (5  inches,  6  inches)  

 Fabric  B  –  Inner  star  points       1  square  -­‐  4  inches  (5  inches,  6  inches)    Fabric  C  –  Outer  star  points       2  squares  -­‐  4  inches  (5  inches,  6  inches)    Start  by  making  4  half  square  triangles,  2  using  a  Fabric  A  and  Fabric  B  2  inch  square  combination  and  2  using  a  Fabric  B  and  Fabric  C  2  inch  square  combination.

Place  the  fabrics  with  the  printed  sides  touching  each  other  (right  sides  together).

Take  your  ruler  and  draw  a  line  from  one  corner  to  the  opposite  corner  along  the  diagonal.    

   Using  the  line  marked,  draw  another  line  ¼  inch  away  from  it.    Repeat  on  the  opposite  side  of  the  line.    You  now  have  three  lines.

   At  the  machine,  sew  along  both  outside  lines.  

Now  carefully  cut  along  the  middle  drawn  line,  this  will  ensure  you  have  ¼  inch  seam.

   Once  you  have  both  pieces  done,  take  your  blocks  to  the  ironing  board  and  press  the  seam  toward  the  darker  fabric  side.

   Cut  the  4  half  square  triangles  diagonally  across  both  fabrics.    

   Line  up  the  half  square  triangles  so  that  each  resulting  square  has  1  Fabric  A/Fabric  B  triangle  and  1  Fabric  B/Fabric  C  triangle  and  the  Fabric  B  pieces  are  opposite  each  other.

   Sew  them  together  for  4  squares.    Press  open.    

   Trim  the  4  blocks  2  ½  inches  (3  ½  inches,  4  ½  inches).    Line  up  the  diagonal  line  on  the  ruler  with  the  diagonal  line  on  the  quilt  block  and  the  1  ¼  inch  (1  ¾  inch,  2  ¼  inch)  grid  markings  touching  the  center  point  of  the  block.

   Cut  off  the  left  hand  side  and  top  of  extending  fabric.    

   Rotate  the  block  half  way  and  again  line  up  the  ruler  so  that  the  diagonal  marking  on  the  ruler  matches  the  diagonal  on  the  block,  the  1  ¼  inch  (1  ¾  inch,  2  ¼  inch)  mark  touches  the  center  of  the  block  and  the  first  2  edges  sit  on  the  2  ½  inch  (3  ½  inch,  4  ½  inch)  lines.

   Cut  away  fabric  extending  beyond  the  ruler.    

   Line  up  the  9  blocks  with  Fabric  A  in  the  center  and  on  the  4  corners  and  the  quarter  square  triangles,  hour  glass  shapes,  at  the  top,  bottom  and  both  sides  with  Fabric  A  on  the  outer  edges.    Sew  the  3  blocks  in  the  top  row  together,  the  3  blocks  in  the  center  row  together,  and  the  3  blocks  in  the  bottom  row  together.    Press  the  seams  toward  all  of  the  solid  Fabric  A  squares.

   Sew  the  three  rows  together  and  press  open.    This  is  the  Ohio  Star  Quilt  Block.
