Data Overview The impetus for this database came from a gift to the Ostfriesen Genealogical Society of America (OGSA) of card files and loose sheets of paper from Kurt van Loh in June of 2005. For more than 40 years he recorded information about the emigration of Ostfriesians. This transcription is an attempt to record his work on a searchable computer database with the intention of expanding the database including information from members of the OGSA and other resources. The Contributors Lists in the Appendix section lists the names and abbreviations used for the information source references used in the database. The defining criteria for inclusion of Ostfriesian names on this list was the fact of having crossed the ocean (emigrated from Ostfriesland) to begin anew on the North American continent (or in some cases having been born at sea to Ostfriesian parents).
Key Sources This work would not have been possible without Van Loh's card files or the groundwork laid out by Kenneth de Wall and Eddie Dirks in Dale Wilken's "Obituary Index to the Ostfriesische Nachrichten". Other entries have been culled from the Ortssippenbücher (OSB's) of Ostfriesland where there is a listing of the person or family as ausgewandert, or a listing of an American location where people died or settled. Rick Gersema's "Obituary Index to the Ostfriesische Nachrichten." is another invaluable resource, listing obituaries from 1916 forward, as well as Robert Appledorn's extensive work on German Valley, Illinois, and Darren King’s Ortssippenbuch for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Nokomis IL, both of which especially helped in matching spouses and filling in information not available elsewhere. Other valuable sources are:
the 125th anniversary booklet (1872‐1997) for Macon, Nebraska
Centennial book (1882‐1982) for Ireton, Iowa
Centennial Book for Buffalo Center, Iowa
Ancestor Charts contributed by the members of the Ostfriesen Genealogy Society of George, Iowa.
The great work of Robert H. Behrens in his book “We Will Go to a New Land”
“Emden als Auswandererhafen” by Christian Röben and Aiko Schmidt.

Data Considerations Information in the column for date of emigration may be the Verkauf und Auswanderung (Sale and Emigration) date, the date the people sold everything and left the Ostfriesland community. Dates from Wilken's index may be the date of the obituary notice in the paper, not the actual death date. Other dates may be the date a passport was issued‐‐particularly those of the Esens area. In other words, the date of death or emigration may not be 100% exact but within a parameter of time. An attempt has been made to match up names with ship’s names and arrival dates as well as the OSB entries. Question marks indicate material that was difficult to decipher with certainty or a question whether the information is being interpreted or understood correctly exists. An asterisk (*) indicates a reference to be checked in the comment column. The index cards from Kurt van Loh may be some of the only records of emigration information about people from the German side. Many ship records for Bremerhaven were destroyed, and the U.S. National Archives' ships' records do not always list the place of origin of passengers. In some cases, van Loh has indicated the ship upon which the emigrants arrived and the port of entry. The surnames column lists women by their maiden names. Sometimes the entry only lists the maiden name and the married name of a woman but no given name, or it is uncertain if the initial used is hers or her husband's. Both surnames and given names listed are those found in the earliest records, i.e. in the Ortssippenbuch entry. Many names were altered in the United States and the “new” name appears in the column for alternate names. Caution: Be careful using these data. The multitude of similar names can lead to confusion when assigning dates to various names. Also, the information is third or fourth hand information. Sometimes the information given by survivors was incorrect or spellings were changed, misrecorded; or names reflect a spelling change after the emigration. In many cases the variable name‐spellings have been listed together. Names with umlauts have retained the umlaut in most cases unless the information came from an American source which omitted the umlaut. The transcriber of this list would appreciate any corrections or additional information, and apologizes for mis‐transcriptions or misreading of the original entries, notwithstanding the spelling variations due to language and culture. Many of the entries listing Plymouth County IA contributed by Gene Janssen were transcribed from the church records of Christ Lutheran/Grant Township/Plymouth County IA, and because of work on the ISTG web site, names of people on ships’ lists are included in this database where identification is possible. OSB numbers in that column indicate the entry number in the Ortssippenbuch for the community from which the people came. These are not generally included on the original cards but have been added by the transcriber. See the OSB/OFB Abbreviations appendix for a list of the community book references used in this database. Gene Janssen, Transcriber for OGSA

Appendix
Database Contents The database contains the following information: Database Heading Description
ID An internal system reference number, it is subject to change when the database is updated.
Surname Surname of the emigrant. Women did not assume their husband’s name in Ostfriesland so this should be the woman’s birth surname.
FirstName First name of the emigrant. This should be the person’s birth name rather than an Americanized version of the name, ex. Jan versus John.
MiddleName Middle names were not common in Ostfriesland but the father’s patronymic name was frequently used, ex. Jan Harms Surname (the son of Harm Surname).
AKA AKA = Also Known As. This may be an Americanized form of the emigrant’s birth name, ex. Jenny for Jantje.
OSB# Attempts have been made to match emigrants to their records in community OSB or OFB family books to support further family research.
DateofBirth The emigrant’s date of birth based on available evidence. This may have been provided from a variety of sources.
BirthPlace The emigrant’s place of birth based on available evidence. This may have been provided from a variety of sources.
SpouseName Name of the emigrant’s spouse. The marriage may have occurred in Ostfriesland or after emigration.
Source The contributor of the emigrant’s information.
Marriage The emigrant’s marriage date(s). More than one date may be provided or not all dates may be provided in the event of multiple marriages for the emigrant.
MarriageLocation The emigrant’s marriage location(s). More than one date may be provided or not all dates may be provided in the event of multiple marriages for the emigrant.
DeathDate Death date of the emigrant.
DeathLocation Death location of the emigrant.
BurialLocation Burial location of the emigrant.
CemeteryName Cemetery name where the emigrant is buried.
DateOnShip The date on ship will often be the arrival date at the destination port since these records are more available than departure records. It can be the departure date or a family reported date for the emigration. This is often a difficult date to obtain.
DeparturePort The emigrant’s departure port. Multiple ports may be listed in some cases where stops were made. The original port may not be listed if the emigrant changed ships during the voyage.
ArrivalPort The emigrant’s port of arrival.
Residence1 The emigrant’s initial or reported place of residence after emigration. Multiple locations may be reported.
Residence2 A secondary residence location for the emigrant.
MiscNotes Additional information may be recorded for the emigrant. In some cases, it may identify parents, siblings or other information that may facilitate researching the emigrant.

Contributors List
Letters in the Source column in the database indicates the source of the information for that entry. In many cases there are multiple sources listed. KVL, for Kurt van Loh, is usually listed first because that was the original information received for this database.

After the Danish War of 1864, the Austrians and the Prussians as allies disagreed on what to do with the provinces of Schleswig and Holstein, among other points. This led to the war known as the Seven Week's War in which Prussia defeated Austria, thanks to a newly invented weapon, the "needle gun" which was three times more deadly that the old muzzle‐loading type. Prussia also had one of the greatest military strategists of the time, Helmuth von Moltke. The resulting Treaty of Prague (Aug. 23, 1866) granted the province of Venetia (Venice) to Italy for their support of the Prussians; Prussia annexed Schleswig and Holstein and the Austrian‐Habsburg dominance of Europe was effectively curtailed. Because Hannover had sided with Austria, the victorious Prussians also took it as well as Ostfriesland under their sovereignty.
