The Canadian Navy Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) are ice-capable patrol ships that will be employed to assert and enforce sovereignty in Canada’s waters, including the Arctic in the navigable season. The AOPS have an ice strengthened hull designed to IACS Polar Class 5 requirements and are capable operating at 3 knots in 1 m thick ice. The AOPS will also operate off Canada’s East and West coasts to the full extent of Canada’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), therefore, the ships have been designed to have good seakeeping performance as well. The ships have a flight deck and hanger to support the operations of medium lift helicopters including the Canadian Maritime Helicopter CH-148 Cyclone and can launch and recover large multipurpose RHIBs in up to Sea State 6.
