Places and people where
TRADITIONS
kindle our passion to
CREATE anew In all periods of transition, there are old assumptions and ways of existence that recede to a new spirit of the times; a spirit that emanate the needs of the people and the gaps they see in the world around them.
Often, this new spirit will emerge in a new generation of people and ignite a love for all things new; dismissing the things of yesteryear. Yet, there can still be found those who choose not to limit their future, in disregarding their past. There are places and people who use their traditions to kindle the passion to create anew. English writer and author Tom Hodgkinson once penned:
Urban-Country
Spirit
1.800.504.2995
www.VisitDarkeCounty.org
“... every age is the construction of an ‘olden days’, when people were happy and things were easier.
Harking back to an imagined ideal past is not mere escapist nostalgia. It is, on the contrary, a method of moving forward, of deciding on our priorities in life.
And the past is a far better place to look for ideas on how to live than the future, because the future is pure fantasy and the past actually did happen.”
Tucked along the Indiana border of West-Central Ohio, you’ll find such a place and people. Darke County, Ohio.
It’s a place that delights in keeping alive the merriment of old town festivals and artisanal craftsmanship tendered in style and fashion anew. Its people fuse creativity and innovation with nostalgia and history;
creating a renaissance of cultural experiences brimming with rich, authentic local flavor. Downtowns once dormant now center stage, inviting locals and visitors alike to window shop, browse, and connect with family and friends for a social smorgasbord of conversation, enjoyment and fun. This is Darke County, Ohio. Our spirit is urban country.

Darke County can please any outdoor enthusiast, naturalist or adventurer of today.
With 1,000 acres of parks and preserves, and the recent celebration of
40th years of conservation and preservation, the Darke County Parks
can please any outdoor enthusiast, naturalist or adventurer of today.
Families and friends come from miles around to enjoy the nature,
wildlife and beautiful landscapes. Peripheral parks such as Winterrowd
Wetlands, Worth Family Preserve, Eidson Woods Preserve and
Routzong Preserve are the county’s gems in the rough.
Each year, the Park District becomes the backdrop for some of the
county’s most popular annual events. The Maple Syrup Day and
Waffle Breakfast are held the first full Saturday in March, and Prairie
Days is held over the last full weekend in September. Together, these
events bring in more than 5,000 visitors. Each event offers an intrinsic
experience of fun and food; and an atmosphere and nature all its own.
Darke County is now home to a seven-mile lineal trail; a paved path
for hikers, runners, walkers, cross-country snow skiers and horseback
riders to enjoy. The ambitious goal for Tecumseh Trail is set to include 18
miles of trail running from Union City, Indiana to Bradford, Ohio dubbed
“The Darke to Miami County Connector.” The ten-year project, would
connect Darke County to an extensive system of bike trails covering
a large portion of the state of Ohio, making the trail a pleasure to
experience for resident and visitor alike.
Not to be outdone, the City of Greenville and the Versailles community
have their own extensive green space and park areas. In spring,
summer and fall, it is common to see families and individuals filling the
area parks from end to end with games, barbecuing and relaxation.
