Wander through the region and you will discover the untouched villages tucked beside rivers with little cafes to replenish your supplies, vintage stores with unlikely finds, and historic pubs to sample exceptional local produce and hospitality.

The little-known gold rush era villages scattered through the region are jewels in the landscape. Their former supply stores are now lost and found treasures, like exquisite finely curated museums with vintage, antique and collectible finds.

From Inglewood, to Bridgewater, Tarnagulla and Eddington you will find these stores, with collections of beautifully illustrated books, kitchenalia, vintage recipes books and postcards to friends long gone. Historic handcrafted furniture, copperware, metalwork and utilitarian creations — precious remnants from these once prosperous towns — have been gathered by those with an eye. In stores offering second-hand wares you will uncover classic vinyl LPs, vintage clothing and curios from other times.

The region protects some of the finest wilderness and significant parklands in Victoria. From ancient forests with trees over 1,000 years old, to the shimmering grassy plains of Terrick Terrick National Park and the wildflower shrouded granite hilltops and caves of Kooyoora State Park and Pyramid Hill. Over 200 species of native flora and 100 bird species nestle in their nooks, with many rare and endangered birds and plants calling these hills and valleys home.

It is in Loddon that you can camp under the gnarled and majestic trees, catch a glimpse of the Plains-wanderer, one of our most endangered birds in the State’s largest area of native grassland, and walk or cycle through forest that opens to vast spaces or alongside tree lined rivers. The country’s first TrailRider (all terrain wheelchair) is available free of charge from the Loddon Visitor Information Centre for use in the Loddon Shire and allows visitors with limited mobility to explore this beautiful environment. Untouched wilderness

Known for its network of significant lakes and wetlands that feed some of the largest rivers in Victoria, here you can swim in a secluded waterhole on the Loddon River, dangle your feet by the banks, witness the aquatic and migratory birds that flock to the area and glimpse a family of turtles basking in the sun. Picnic or swim by the natural infinity pool in Bridgewater, canoe down the wide rivers and small waterways in the region or enjoy the red gum lined lakes of Laanecoorie Weir or Lake Boort. At Newbridge or Laanecoorie you can fish, or enjoy a pub lunch at Newbridge’s historic pub.

If you are after something a little racier join the skiiers on the crystalline waters near Bridgewater, Laanecoorie Weir or Little Lake Boort.

The pockets and valleys of Loddon hold some of the world’s richest alluvial fields, with 80% of the world’s largest nuggets discovered in the towns of Wedderburn, Inglewood, Rheola, Kingower and Tarnagulla over the past 160 years. Prospectors were originally seduced in the early 1850s, with the 71kg Welcome Stranger discovered in 1869. Today large finds are still made by professionals and amateurs alike. (We suggest a quiet chat with one of the locals to hear stories of the latest finds, and where you too can get lucky!)

The lands of Loddon allow for true sustainable living – whether it is picking up vintage pieces to furnish your home, or collecting produce from the nearby fields (such as the world’s finest breads, meats, olives and olive oil, tomatoes, fruit and even salt). It is on these plains too that eucalyptus oil was first produced, and can be purchased today to complete your larder.

In Bridgewater is the 100-year-old Laucke mill that produces what is considered the world’s finest bread making flour. Using wheat from the local farms, the flour is used by Australia’s finest artisan bakers … and exclusively by the local Bridgewater Bakery.

In Inglewood, introduce yourself to James at Meat on Brooke. James is one of only two butchers in Australia who uses a

traditional dry aged beef method. His locally sourced, chemical free meat is akin to tasting an apple straight from the tree.

Travel further north to the farms and meet Peter and Marlies of Salute Oliva in Boort and Marilyn and Ian of Simply Tomatoes in Yando, or see a large range of Loddon’s local produce at Meat on Brooke in Inglewood or the Loddon Visitor Information Centre in Wedderburn.

The road follows the old 1850s Cobb & Co track to some of Victoria’s treasures. First stop is Durham Ox on the Serpentine Creek. More of a cross road than a town, here is a quiet fishing spot, an exquisite place to canoe amongst the red gums and undisturbed birdlife.

This road will lead you to Boort, the oasis of the north or "Kakadu of the south". The open expanse of lakes in this area surround this pretty town on a hill, with a beautiful caravan park sitting along one edge of Little Lake Boort.

Here you can explore one of the most significant landscapes in Victoria, the Aboriginal scarred trees, where in these lakes and rivers over 400 Aboriginal scarred trees remain.Seemingly frozen in time, the trees retain markings where canoes, shelters and carrying vessels were once removed. Discover this area for yourself or take a journey with Gulpilill’s Australia to learn of this exceptional heritage and unique ecological environment on our doorstep.

For something curious but equally as awe-inspiring, travel to Barraport and take in the work of the Spanner Man who creates giant sculptures out of spanners. In the past ten years, wheelchair-bound John has created over 100 enormous sculptures using over 100,000 of these tools. Further along the road is one of the region's farming success stories, Simply Tomatoes and Aussie Wool Quilts. At this farm gate, Marilyn will invite you to camp, dine and watch the making of her range of high quality wool quilt products.

This town, recognised for its historic and art deco architecture is named after the beautiful granite hill that it sits alongside. A golf course surrounds the hill and a walking track meanders around the base of this view point that was once the meeting place for local aboriginal clans, and a passing point for Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836. A curiosity is the local Historical Society with more than 6,000 items in its repository.

Visitors can stay at the caravan park or the grand 1928 Victoria Hotel in Pyramid Hill, or travel to the exceptional Terrick Terrick National Park. With a low granite outcrop, Terrick Terrick contains one of the most intact areas of indigenous northern plains vegetation in Victoria. Within its boundaries are fields of endangered plants, ancient forests and native animals and birdlife, an area that has seduced travellers for thousands of years.

On 1 September 1860, Burke and Wills, with their calvacade of 26 camels and 28 horses, travelled from Terrick Terrick to Mt Hope. Wills, Becker, and Beckler climbed Mt Hope. Becker sketched Pyramid Hill from Mt Hope. On this granite outcrop 10 kilometres from Pyramid Hill are stands of White Cypress Pine, Eucalptus, Wattle and wildflowers in spring.

SERPENTINE CALIVIL JARKLIN DINGEE

Little known jewels sit amidst these verdant pastures. Serpentine is a small town where you can access the magnificent Serpentine Creek and Pon Pon reserve. Pon Pon, a treasure trove of plants and animals, was an important site for Aboriginal communities with many scarred trees evident in this area. Just south of Serpentine you will see a large, heritage-listed brick woolshed, constructed for John

Ettershank, an engineer and pastoralist, who is credited with the invention of the first mechanical shearing system.

Passing through Dingee you will see the superb 1930s corrugated-iron memorial hall. Close by is a wall of plaques commemorating past residents in the district.

Dairy herds dominate the farm land in this region, including Calivil – an irrigation district with

water sourced from as far away as Lake Eildon. The town, with its local hall and recreation reserve, is framed by the natural shade trees of the Pompapiel Forest.

Jarklin is a farming district with the Four Posts Hotel the meeting place for local residents. Drop in for a drink and meet some of the locals that work the land in this fertile region.


BRIDGEWATER ON LODDON ARNOLD

Bridgewater sits on the wide banks of the Loddon River. Once the crossing point for gold diggers, today it is a key destination for those exploring the region. After fossicking through the historic church’s op shop, or wandering through the antique and collectibles shop, pick up a bottle of wine from Water Wheel Winery and select your picnic lunch from the Bridgewater Bakehouse.

With these supplies, make your way down river to the natural infinity pool, with a swimming platform surrounded by river red gums. In the distance, you will see the 100-year-old Laucke Flour Mill.

You can head down the river on a canoe, or ski on the long stretches of river where the Australian Masters are held every January.

Finish the day sleeping by the Loddon in the riverside caravan and camping park, and continue your stay to walk the many trails, cycle, play golf or just while away the hours.

When you are ready to mosey, travel the scenic route via Arnold to Inglewood.

Most years we produce some odd varieties, such as Petit Verdot, Malbec or Primitivo. The cellar door is just on the eastern edge of Bridgewater surrounded by lawns and bordered by vineyard.

The grand historic buildings of Inglewood stand as testament to the wealth that flooded into this area. Today antiques and collectibles stores are clustered amongst the exquisite buildings and historic shopfronts.

A key stopping point is Meat on Brooke, the notable dry aged butcher and providore of local produce. Further down, on the edge of town is the Blue Eucy museum with a fully operating still. Looking out into the bushland you will see trees where leaves

are still harvested, the same trees used in the 1850s. From the museum shop and café you can also purchase the full range of local eucy products.

Kingower and Rheola are two beautiful old gold rush era villages bordering the Kooyoora State Park. Rheola, once home to 130 stores, retains buildings from these heady days. Gold remains in the region, and fossicking continues to reward. In the 1980s the ‘Hand of Faith’ was found just behind the Kingower school house,

then sold to a Las Vegas casino for US $1 million.

Kooyoora State Park is home to rare box ironbark forest, spectacular granite outcrops and significant Indigenous sites. The hiding cave of bushranger Captain Melville can be explored in the gullies of the granite. One highlight of the region is the winding path to the top of Kooyoora State Park for the 360 degree views of the horizon.

WEDDERBURN KORONG VALE WYCHITELLA

Squatters arrived in Wedderburn in the 1840s, with the trickle of settlers turning to a flood when gold was uncovered. Magnificent buildings remain in the back blocks, with the Coach House Museum exhibiting precious historic pieces such as carriages, hardware and a blacksmith's store. The historic General Store with stock still on the shelves is little changed from the days of the goldrush.

On the edge of town is the native bushland of Hard Hill Reserve, a camping and RV friendly site. In amongst the trees is a gem – an old eucy still manned by volunteers, who harvest and distil the local leaves to produce the elixir. Slightly further afield are the Beggary Hills (Note: known locally as the prospector’s dream … just saying!).

Also in the region is the picturesque and seemingly forgotten Victorian railway town of Korong Vale. A photographer’s fantasy, this town boasts the beautiful two storey historic Scully Hotel that sits quietly on this former busy thoroughfare.

Nature lovers are spoilt for choice at the Wychitella conservation reserve that bursts to life after rain, with rare and threatened species abounding in its hills. Those feeling more adventurous can make their way up to Mt Korong, a haven for bird watchers and bushwalkers.

When departing Loddon Valley and travelling the Calder Highway to Mildura, a must-do is to stop at Sea Lake and visit Lake Tyrrell. This is the largest salt lake in Victoria.

Inglewood Aged Beef is produced by hanging the whole carcase for 21 to 28 days; during this time the juices are absorbed into the beef, enhancing the flavour and tenderising the meat, a crust forms on the outside of the carcase which is later trimmed away. On the way to or from the Loddon Valley, we suggest you stop by Laanecoorie. This long body of water lined with red gums has quiet spots for camping, canoeing, fishing, walking and cycling, with open spaces for boating and skiing. The large historic Janevale Bridge designed by Sir John Monash is the largest bridge of its kind built in Victoria prior to World War 1. Laanecoorie Lakeside Park a quiet spot to camp, park your van or stay in the cabins beside the river.

Another stop on these historic backroads is Eddington, a key river crossing and supply town during the goldrush. Once boasting five hotels, a chemist, butter and cheese factory, saddlery, bank and station agent, the population gradually fell away, leaving this quaint town standing as testament to these extraordinary times. By the river you can dream an afternoon away, and then finish it off with a coffee and homemade beignets at Septembre Vintage, a café

and vintage store owned by the French-born Virginie and Dominic.

Logan is a gem on this ribbon of historic road to discover. We suggest stopping at the Avoca Forest Hotel to find out from the locals about other hidden spots in this region.

Travel information

BY CAR – This region is very accessible by car only 2.5 hours from Melbourne Airport or Melbourne City via the Calder Highway connecting at Bridgewater.

BY RAIL – Loddon Valley can be accessed daily from Southern Cross Station, travelling by train to Swan Hill and stopping at Dingee and Pyramid Hill.

Other areas in Loddon Valley can be accessed by trains departing Southern Cross Station to Bendigo, then catching a V/Line Bus into the region. Buses connect daily but it’s important to check timetables as they can alter.
