APR. BOARD MEETING SUMMARY BY BILL BLOODWORTH

SYNOPSIS: There are 354 total members, 315 full

members and 39 associates. The ending March

balance is $22,069.03 which reflects revenue of

$1,813.00 and expenses of $129.77. The VKA

account has officially been moved to Chase Bank.

Squeegee Tees of North Carolina was selected as the t-shirt vendor.

Regarding tires, CST is not a new company, just a new logo for

Cheng Shin Tire. Dean Kossaras submitted a Yamaha engine with

three different carburetors to Comet for testing. The results will be

published later. At the Barnesville event, Walker Porter was

awarded the “People’s Choice” prize. Mike Lotz was presented

with a “Director’s Choice” prize due to the historic nature of the kart

which Mike was showing. Pictures of the show winners were not

usable due to improper exposure. The show had to move under a

canopy to avoid rain. Mention of the tragic deaths of Kyle and Tony

Adkins will be added to the upcoming issue of the VKA magazine.

Karl Ginter will request quotes for various quantities of a multi-

color 11.5” x 3” foldable bumper sticker design which emphasizes

the VKA website URL. Karl had originally initiated the design

effort for use in the Northeast region.

CIRCLEVILLE RESULTS BY SCOTT KLINGLER

The mantra of the track owner is, “It never rains at

Circleville.” Well, “never” is a long time, but as it

turned out, he was right … almost.

Ten-days out, the weather looked “really good.” Five-days out …

not so much. The day before showed rain for Thursday until

5:00PM, but it looked good for Friday. Saturday was “iffy.”

Then there was REALITY! No rain on Thursday for a full-day of

practice, and “it never rained at Circleville” on Friday (until 6pm).

Earlier, at the drivers’ meeting, EVERYONE voted to run three Heats

on Friday … with “senior breaks” between Heats. (There is

something to be

said for “vintage

wisdom.”) Fifteen

Classes were

combined into eight

Classes to

accommodate the

46 entries!

Gary Wlodarsky, Kart Show Wizard, did his part to make the whole

event work. Given the weather forecast and the busy schedule for

three Heats in one day, Gary announced at the Drivers’ Meeting that

the Kart Show Judges would wander through the pits to evaluate the

“kart art.” This saved precious time all the drivers appreciated.

The first two Heats, with a welcome break in between, came off

without a hitch. Anyone who was watching practice and the first

two Junior Class Heats would have been amazed at the progress of

our newest and youngest “vintage” karter made (Hannah Nagel).

Then there was the third Heat. The weather forecast was for rain in

the late afternoon. Of the eight Classes, no problem for the first 6.

VKA FIRSTURN© -6- Jun/Jul 2017

MMXVII – No. 4

But, during (of all things) the dual engine Class #7, it started to rain.

That was one of several classes I was running, and I can tell you, the

end of the back straight was …. a “challenge.” Breaks and steering

were “options” on my kart at this point. All’s well that ends well.

Nothing bent, nothing broken and we finished the Heat with no

casualties. Can’t say as much for the last Class, #8. It was

cancelled, but I didn’t hear any complaints.

Thanks to Steve Tatman, Track Owner, for providing lunch on

Friday and a great venue for our event. Speaking of Steve, maybe

he should revise his mantra to, “It never rains at Circleville … on

race day.”

SANDY HOOK SUMMARY BY KARL GINTER After several days of sweltering heat in eastern Maryland, the

weather cooled in time to afford the VKA two perfect days of

karting weather at the Sandy Hook, Maryland WKA master track

facility. Dennis and Janet Headley, who run a weekly program of

modern 4-cycle and TAG kart programs hosted the inaugural VKA

vintage 2-cycle extravaganza that netted 43 gridded racers, and

50 participants overall for a challenging and fun-filled weekend.

The 36-entry Kart Show presented the judges with quite a challenge on Sunday

morning, judging from among the best original, restored, and modified historic,

rear, and sidewinder karts on the eastern seaboard. Rochester, New York’s Sam

Polito brought his beautifully-prepared rear engine Grand Prix, which garnered a

well-deserved People’s Choice Award.

Lots of practice and exhibition time characterized the first day, along with some

sore arms, necks, and shoulders for those who weren’t accustomed to the

challenge of a real driver’s track, and an honest to goodness Monza that pulled

some G-forces that many weren’t expecting!

Sandy Hook was the first of four events in the Northeast Promoter’s Cup Series

that culminates at Cuddebackville, NY, on Columbus Day weekend. Two of the

three Heats for the nine scored classes were run on Saturday, with the third Heat

being run Sunday after the Kart Show and final practice session. Sandy Hook was

a great way to start the 2017 Northeast season, and the Promoter’s Cup Series.

We thank Dennis & Janet, his staff and crew for hosting a first-rate event, and

look forward to the next Northeast VKA event at Avon, NY – we’ll see you there!

VINTAGE SPRINT KART TEST/FUN DAY AT CMP

BY DICK CHAREST www.carolinamotorsportspark.com/kart-track.html

Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) is

a very nice racing facility located

just south of Kershaw, SC. It

features a road course that is 2.25

miles in length that we have raced

our vintage enduro karts on as part

of WKA races held there in the past.

It also has a very nice sprint kart

track that is 0.7 miles in length. The

track map, below, shows 16 turns,

but in actuality, Turns 9 and 10 are

taken as one sweeping turn using a

portion of the circular skid pad.

The sprint track is nice and smooth

with plenty of run-off area for those

drivers that exceed the track limits.

The paddock is paved and serves as

the track entrance and track exit.

The track is normally run in a

counter-clockwise direction. It is

entered from the paddock at Turn 15

and the track exit into the paddock

is at Turn 5. The pit area is just

outside the paddock. The track is

usually open for practice from 9am

to 4pm each day, but periodically

they hold club races there so

checking the track schedule on their

website (see above) is always a good

idea.

Occasionally I go to the sprint kart

track at CMP to test a rebuilt engine

or just for a fun day at the track.

Back on April 14th I went to the

track to break-in the pistons in a

couple of engines. That day Sterling

Brundick, his son, and Duke Zink

also came to the track to test

equipment. We all had a good time

and got our testing done.

After a couple weeks of work in the

shop I had two more engines to test.

I sent out an email to some vintage

sprinters saying I was planning on

going to CMP to test on May 17th

and if they wanted to come that day

we could all have a fun day at the

track. May 17th was a Wednesday

so some folks had to work and could

not make it, but going in the middle

of the week is great because we

usually have the entire track to

ourselves.

I got to CMP around 8:45am and

checked-in at track registration. I

then went to the pits and set up my

pit area and my pop-up tent. I

brought two karts to the track. My

Emmick was set-up with a MC-93,

a Max-Torque clutch, and a

Horstman box muffler. My Invader

was set-up with a K-30, B-Bomb, a

34mm Mikuni carb, a Burco clutch,

and an RLV pipe.

VKA FIRSTURN© -14- Jun/Jul 2017

MMXVII – No. 4

The CMP crew were mowing the

grass inside the track and when they

finished, they set-up the beacon and

swept the track.

Scott Ader, his son-in-law Ben

Schwartz, and a mutual friend

Ronald Grubb arrived next from

Lexington, NC. They set up their pit

area and unloaded several

karts. Scott had a couple of

karts with Atlas engines on

them. Ben’s kart had a modified

Honda engine from a CRF450 dirt

bike. That engine was punched out

to over 500cc and had a modified

cam and a 5-speed transmission.

That thing was a torque monster!

Next to arrive was Bill Anderson

who recently moved from

Pooleville, MD to Augusta, GA.

Bill brought a vintage sprint kart

with a Yamaha KT-100P piston port

engine. He has only seen three of

these engines in all his years of

karting and he has all three of them.

It is a different looking Yamaha

since the cylinder and the cylinder

head are round, unlike the Yamaha

KT-100 engines that are rec-

tangular. In addition, the ignition on

the KT-100P is adjustable.

Next to arrive were Bill Johnson

and his wife Treva from Hickory,

NC. Bill had a K-55 on his kart and

a 100cc Mac on Treva’s kart.

Donnie Weaver drove up from the

Charleston area for the track day.

Donnie is in the Air Force and got a

day off to come to the track. He

brought a Margay Concept sprint

kart with a 100cc Mac on it. The last

Weaver

one to arrive was Duke Zink who

drove down from Cornelius, NC.

Duke brought two karts with him,

one with a 4-cycle and the other

with his Yamaha KT-100.

The weather was great all day. We

had bright sunshine and although it

was fairly warm, there was a nice

breeze that kept it comfortable.

There are a number of pine trees in

the pit area that provided some

shade for those without a pop-up

tent.

Ben’s Honda went dead during his

first session and the problem was

traced to a dead battery that powers

the fuel pump. Scott replaced the

battery with a fresh one and Ben was

off and running strong for the rest of

the day. Everybody seemed to run

well and nobody had any major

problems. Bill Johnson had a coil

wire come off, but that was quickly

reconnected. Scott had one engine

that was running hot, but otherwise

everything went well. Bill

Anderson, Donnie Weaver, Duke

Zink and I ran all day without any

problems at all with our equipment.

It makes it so much more enjoyable

when everything runs well at the

track on race day. Our group of

vintage karters were the only ones at

the track so we had the track all to

ourselves and everybody got plenty

of track time. We even managed to

sneak in some “bench racing”

between the on-track sessions. Dick Charest

TRIVIA ANSWER (FROM P. 12)

Jim Donovan owns a 2006 Mini that you may have seen at an event you have

been, whether New York, Iowa, California, or Florida or points in between, Jim

has been to them all. 222,222 is a lot of miles on a 2006, and it may have been

enough to get him to the moon, but he’ll need another 222,222+ to get home!
