1. Introduction

Since advances in information and communication technologies have changed the style of recent

information dissemination impressively, the Internet and other means based on network technology

have become the most popular ones.

In order to make most use of such a rapid development in information dissemination technology

and to disseminate industrial property information as broadly as possible, it is necessary to adopt the

most versatile media and the most convenient way for publication in a flexible manner.

To facilitate JPO's response to such evolution in information dissemination environment,

regulations of publication via the Internet have been established under the Law for Partial Revision

of Patent Law and other Related Laws for Reducing Patent Pendency (Law No. 79, June 4, 2004).

Taking advantage of the new Law, JPO developed the website called the "Official Publication via

the Internet (hereinafter referred to as "this site")" and started to publish Registered Utility Model

Applications via the Internet from January 2006, as it was an urgent issue to reduce the publication

period(period from registration to publication) for utility model application. JPO also started to

publish Registered Design Applications via the Internet from January 2007 and started to publish

Registered Trademark Applications and Unexamined/International Trademark Applications via the

Internet from January 2010.

In addition, JPO also started to publish Unexamined Patent Applications, Registered

Patent/Utility Model Applications, Trial Decision Publications, and Patent Office

gazette from April 2015. And it became possible to select gazettes to download with

search conditions in addition to the whole download of a specified publication,

2-5. Printing of this guide

1. Right-click on a screen of browser

(e.g. Internet Explorer), then click “print”.

2. The Print dialog box appears. Click the “print” button.

3.Printing on paper other than A4 form

Click the “Page Setup …” button on the lower left corner of the Print dialog.

The Page Setup dialog as below appears. Select page size from the drop-down

list, then click the “OK” button to finish the Page Setup dialog.

3. The outline of Publication via the Internet

[Official Publication via the Internet] is a site where users download the official

gazette putted on the Internet by Japan Patent Office.

A downloaded official gazette will bearchived. You can read the gazette, after you

unarchive it.

This Chapter explains kinds of publication and specifications of publication.

This site will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including non-office working

days. However it may be out of service temporarily for equipment maintenance.

The Publication via the Internet shall be stored in the Hosting server in sequential

order.

3-6. Protocol for data transmission

"HTTPS" is used for data transmission.

3-7. Archive format

The downloaded publication except for the Patent Office gazette, is archived to the

following formats

・All download：Zip format・Tar format

・Some download：Zip format

Contents extracted from Zip and Tar files are the same.

※The Zip format is one of the widespread archive formats in computers including

personal computers, Tar format (Tape Archival and Retrieval format) is one of the

widespread archives format in UNIX-like OS.

The Patent Office gazette includes only single PDF file.

3-8. Supplement to the archive file

The archive file includes the file which composes the official gazette and the directory

information.

②The list of the latest publications is displayed , then click the button of the

publication you'd like to download.

(e.g. Published Unexamined Patent Application. In case of Patent Office gazette,

download form is only PDF.)

③ Confirm that the chosen file is displayed and click the "download" button.

※When an error occurred during the download, try again after a while.

④Click the “Save” button.

The appeared pop-up screen will differ by OS and browser you use. Follow the

instructions of the browser to save the downloaded file.

⑤When download is completed, the pop-up screen shows that download was

completed. Then click the "Open folder" button, and confirm that the file was

created.

* When you use other than standard extraction software, the Zip file can’t be extracted

because it has a large volume.

①Please right-click the archive file, and “Extract All…”

Note: When it's double-clicked by mistake, the following screen isdisplayed.

This screen means extraction didn't succeed, and the contents of the archive file

is just displayed.

Please extract with this procedure.

②Check "Show extracted files when complete." , and click "Extract".

③Folders is being extracted, so please wait a moment.

④When the following folders were displayed, the extraction was completed

successfully.

You can get archive extractor from the Internet.

Follow the instructions of software to extract from the tar file.

Note: Depending on archive extractor, some tar files can't be extracted due to their

large volume.

In that case, please use the software which can extract from a large-volume file.

②Select type of publication, and click the “公報一覧表示” button.

(b) Click the [公報一覧表示] button. Then the list of official gazette is displayed.

(c) Select document and click the [表示] button. Then the selected official

gazette is displayed in PDF form.

①Double-click “JPOVIEW.exe” in the “SOFTWARE” folder in the download

folder.(e.g. Published Registered Design Application ” JPD_2014999” )

Note: This document explains only basic procedure. If you want to know the

details of procedures, please see “ENGRES.CHM” in “SOFTWARE” folder.

Note: When an error is occured, there is a possibility that a double-byte

character is included in the path name of the browser.

Please change the preservation place so that a path name may consist of a one-

byte alphanumeric. For example there is a way to start it after you move

"JPD_2014999" to directly under the D drive.

②When the Gazette viewer which displays the Japan Patent Office logo appears,

Click "English" on the lower right of the screen .

Then click the "Search And view" button.

③When the Folder select dialog box appears, Choose a folder of gazette and

click the “OK” button.

④The operation screen of the Gazette Viewer appears.

(a) Select the type of official gazette you'd like to read and click the "Select"

button.

(b) When you click the “Content” button, the contents of the selected official

gazette is displayed.

The amendment gazette and the correction gazette can’t display the contents.

Please choose relevant items by the search field of (c) in this case.

(c) It's possible to select items by using search formula input field. For example,

input "refrigerator" in the search item "Article", and click the "Submit" button.

If there are relevant documents, the list of the search result is displayed. When

you can’t input words well, Click the “Assist” button and select search conditions

from the displayed pop-up screen.

③Click the "OK" button after you choose the official gazette which you'd like to

search.

④The search screen appears, input search condition, and click the "search"

button.

The search items are different depending on the type of publication. Search by

identification number is not possible in "Published Decisions on Appeal/Trial".

Search conditions are “AND condition”, so when you input multiple conditions,

the official gazettes which match all conditions are retrieved.

Note; More than 100 cases can’t be downloaded. Please click the "re-search"

button to return to the previous screen, then input the condition once again.
