Steam Coffin (This information was provided by John Laurence Busch who was the guest

speaker on Steamships, at the Friday night activity during the D/15 Conference held a couple of years ago in Fort Walton Beach.)

I take the liberty of informing you that The Capitol Dome (which is the official magazine of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society) has published my article on the inclusion of a steamship in Emanuel Leutze's famous painting Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way, which is located at the southwestern staircase leading to the gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives. The article: Steam Diplomacy: Sending a Subtle Message in Leutze's Westward Ho!

Leutze (of Washington Crossing the Delaware fame) was contracted to paint this massive work depicting westward migration in the midst of the American Civil War. My research (as a part of my USCHS fellowship) showed that Leutze's two studies of this proposed painting did not depict any steam vessels in the San Francisco Bay panorama at the bottom of the work. But there was a steamship in the final rendering on the House staircase, for all in Washington to see in late 1862 and early 1863, when thousands came to view it.

I then deduced--through a combination of contextual and circumstantial evidence--that the most likely reason this steamship was added to the final painting was due to Leutze's close friendship with U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward. There is, of course, far more to the story.

You can download just my article for free at: http://steamcoffin.com/The-Capitol-Dome-55-2-Busch.pdfor on my website: http://www.steamcoffin.com/sc/Home.html

All the best,John Laurence Busch [email protected]

PS: 2019 is the 200th anniversary of the steamship Savannah's epochal crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.

Middendorf’s Restaurant9th Annual Rendezvous

The rendezvous at Middendorf’s this year will be on Saturday June 1st. We again will be greeting, meeting and eating at the outside pavilion by the piers. If you haven’t been to this rendezvous before its self-service, you order your meals at the outside bar and your name is called when your order is ready. This has worked out great for the last 8 years since you can order when you are ready and everyone doesn’t have to be there at the same time to order. The reservation is for 11:30 AM but you can arrive at your leisure since we will have the tables reserved.

You can come by boat, PWC or automobile. If you come by boat you just need to go at a dead idle going under the bridge and past the pilings. Just to refresh your memory you take exit 15 off of I-55 and do some dead reckoning from there.

All District 15 members and guest are invited. Come out and join us, the food is great and the adult beverages are cold.

Bring your squadron banners and we will display them so the other folks will know who we are. Last year the Baton Rouge Boat Club was also there and if gave us an opportunity to share our message.

No RSVP is required.Looking forward to seeing everyone again and

hopefully meeting some first timers to our D15 rendezvous.

Flotsam and JetsamSpring First-Aid Kit MaintenanceAs you get ready for the new boating season (or

if you’re already out there), don’t forget to check the non-prescription medications in your first-aid kit. Heat and humidity on board can accelerate the breakdown of drugs and could make them useless or even harmful. Check the package expiration dates. If they are past their date, change them out. Even if they are getting close, go ahead and swap them for fresh ones. This includes simple things like aspirin (smells like vinegar if over the hill) and sunblock (loses effectiveness). Consider using those small single-dose packets in the travel section of your drugstore instead of a big bottle. They may cost you a little more money up front, but they are safer and less wasteful in the long run.

Don't Forget Your Tetanus Shot! With debris in the water, fish hook injuries and

lacerations on board, boaters have an increased risk of getting tetanus. Most of these minor injuries seldom require follow-up beyond first aid, which means you may not get a booster tetanus vaccine when needed. Tetanus (lockjaw) is caused by a soil bacterium that enters the body through a contaminated laceration. A toxin produced by the bacterium causes muscle spasms, neck stiffness and difficulty swallowing. Though most victims will eventually recover, there is a 10% fatality rate. Vaccination with tetanus toxoid is virtually 100% effective, but the immunity wanes over time, so you need revaccination every seven to 10 years. Do you know when you had your last tetanus booster? Member Benefits: Autotether — A New Sponsor and Member Benefit

Make safety a priority and protect yourself and your passengers against man-overboard situations! When a boat operator or passenger falls overboard, it often results in a dangerous situation. The unmanned boat can cause significant property damage as well as put anyone in close proximity at risk, too! And worse, for the person

in the water, propeller strikes and being left in open water are too often catastrophic. The Autotether is the best safety solution to address these issues, instantly cutting the engine in overboard situations. In addition to the tremendous

life-saving potential, we also find the following benefits:

* Wireless technology trumps traditional red lanyards with convenience, reliability and expanded safety!

* Operators and passengers wear lightweight, compact remote sensors to activate the system!

* No installation or wiring is required. Sets up in minutes!

*Provides complete freedom of movement onboard! As a new Member Benefit and sponsoring partner

of America’s Boating Club, Autotether is proud to add this product to our benefits portfolio to enhance the value of our membership. For your convenience, you may order this product online.
