How Does the Church Function Together When We Don’t Agree?

The call for a vote to lease the church building to a Seventh Day Adventist church (see later

article on the rescheduling of information meetings and rescheduling of the vote because of

the missed ice day) has raised the question of how we function together as the church. The

following is general remark on this.

The church should seek to find unity in the most basic beliefs. The creeds define the most

basic beliefs of the church: In the creeds we see God is Trinity, Jesus is %100 God who be-

came also %100 man, he died for the sins of the world and rose on the third day, and will

come again to judge the world, etc.

When we place our most basic focus on the creeds we find we have unity with many various

kinds of Christian denominations all around the world. We disagree, for instance, on how to

baptize (infant? Adult? Submersion? Sprinkle?) But we all baptize in the Name of the Father

and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Paul tells us that through this baptism we are one. “For we

were all baptized by one Spirit into one body....” ( Corinthians 12:13) Christ’s body is One

with many parts: hands, feet, Lutheran, Baptist, Lutherans in Cedar Hill, Lutherans in Dun-

canville, Baptist in Cedar Hill, Methodists in Duncanville, etc.

Denominations are Christians who are made God’s own people through faith, (a faith

confessed in the creeds) and who then live out this faith with a particular scriptural em-

phasis. [Methodists historically emphasized holiness, Pentecostals emphasize the Holy Spirit,

Episcopalians their worship under the Book of Common Prayer, Roman Catholic their seven

sacraments, Baptists a decision to accept Christ, Lutherans the grace of God. None of these

emphases are in their essence mutually exclusive.]

By keeping the main thing the main thing we hold up the unity of the church while exercising

the freedom to be ourselves. It is a wonderful unity and freedom we possess. Let’s celebrate

it and live it!

Rescheduled Information Meeting and Rescheduled Vote

Leasing the Church Building to Seventh Day Adventist Church

The vote to lease the building to the Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist Church has been rescheduled for January 25th

at our normal January semi-annual meeting.

The first scheduled December 15th vote was postponed to January because of the December 8th ice storm which

made it impossible to have our December 8th information meeting.

We are rescheduling our informational meeting to 9:00 AM on January 5th and January 12th. (If need be we can

have a third informational meeting on the 17th. We will play this third meeting by ear according to the conversa-

tion on the first two meetings.)

The vote is now scheduled to take place at our January 25th semi-annual meeting.

Three things to keep in mind:

The Seventh Day Adventist Church is a Christian Denomination which believes the basic teachings of the

church found in the creeds.

Leasing our building does not mean we agree with everything that same church body believes.

Because the Seventh Day Adventists worship on Saturdays we will have relatively few scheduling conflicts

while we will benefit from nearly $8,000 of annual rent.

Come to the informational meeting to discuss your thoughts and ask your questions. Then come and vote on Janu-

ary 25th.

Psalm 23:

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He

makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me be-

side quiet waters, 3 he restores my soul. He guides me

along the path of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of death, I will

fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your

staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head

with oil; my cup overflows. 6Surely goodness and love

will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell

in the house of the Lord forever.
