    OFFICIAL PROGRAM

  • 3

I am excited that the annual arts festival that the parish of Holy Trinity East Melbourne is providing for the benefit of the local community is in its third year. It has obviously become a significant feature of the life of the area. The festival allows us to enjoy the creativity of many gifted artists. But let us never forget that we are all creative. And we do not find fulfilment in life until we have discovered the ways in which our creativity can be expressed. It may be in making business decisions, kicking goals at the MCG (not many get a chance to do that!), cooking a meal, rearing a family, or in any of the arts media we celebrate in this festival.

I believe creativity is a gift God has placed within each one of us. I also believe that it is God’s holy spirit that animates our creativity and encourages us and enables us to do all the wonderful things human beings can do.

Let us rejoice together as we celebrate these things. Let us give thanks to God for the creative gifts of those who have organised this festival, for those who take part in it and those who will enjoy it.

    FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHT

Intervals between performances will provide the best opportunity for viewing art works

    and discussion with the artists

This year MelbourneEast Arts is delighted to present two exhibitions under the title ‘Different Voices’: two artists expressing through different media what moves them, inspired by family generations and a variety of cultural influences.

    DIFFERENT VOICES

JANINE WALLACE began drawing from a very early age. Janine’s visiting health nurse had grown up with the Boyds, and observed that like her childhood friends, Janine looked and drew. After leaving school, Janine pursued studies in art and multimedia and in 1983 was top of Art and Design at Prahran College of TAFE. Janine exhibits regularly and has many works in private collections. Janine’s paintings will be exhibited in the church and her drawings will be displayed in the adjoining McBean Room.

MARIJA PATTERSON was born in Austria of Lithuanian parents and migrated to Australia with her family. Marija obtained a fine arts degree (Sculpture) with honours at RMIT in 2003 as a mature age student. She has taught art to children with special needs, run workshops, and has established her art practice, dividing her time between her studios in Stanley and in Clifton Hill. Marija exhibits her work several times a year in group shows. Her work can be found in private collections in Australia and overseas. Marija’s works will be on display in the church at the east end.

JANINE WALLACE and MARIJA PATTERSON reflect on their work, their influences and inspirations.

“To draw is to record the observations on the transitory nature of life.

This is a celebration of life.”

    JANINE WALLACE

“My ideas are imbedded in my work ... viewers may like to

consider the materials I use and objects I create to

    generate their own meaning.”

    FLYING LIKE A BIRD2:00PM

BRANDON LEE was born in Malaysia and started learning the koto when he attended Melbourne University. His teachers include Miyama Mcqueen Tokita, Satsuki Odamura in Sydney, and Kazue Sawai in Tokyo. He has acquired both contemporary and classical repertoire for the koto and also plays the bass koto.

From 2010 to 2012, Brandon was a live-in apprentice for the legendary Kazue Sawai in Tokyo. In 2011, he ranked 2nd among all candidates in Japan for the Sawai Koto School’s instructor’s examination; officially obtaining his teaching license.

Since moving back to Australia, Brandon has travelled and performed in Sydney and Broome. He is currently based in Melbourne and has recently graduated with a Masters of Music from Monash University.

Brandon will perform a selection of pieces and talk about the koto and its music.

    PROGRAM

Torino You ni (Flying Like a Bird) TADAO SAWAI (1985)Tori no You Ni is one of Sawai’s best-known works and it demonstrates his talent in creating enchanting melodies which use the koto’s unique characteristics. It combines a wide variety of modern and traditional playing techniques to evoke a sense of flight.

Rokudan (Music for six movements) UNKNOWNThis is one of the oldest recorded koto pieces. The music is made from six columns (Roku - six, dan - columns) and there are exactly fifty-two beats in each column, except for the first row, which has four beats more. Each column first begins slowly, and then gets faster and faster, but slows down to the original tempo at the end. Along with the Midare, it is one of the most popular soukyoku.

A Letter from a Stranger’s Childhood ROBIN WILLIAMSON (1987)This piece was written by the English composer, Robin Williamson. It features the bass koto as a solo instrument. This piece is considered unique, as no picks are used while playing.

Sanka (Song of Praise) TADAO SAWAI (1978)Sanka begins with a lyrical section, which mimics the singing of a song of praise, followed by a highly intricate passage in which both the left and right hands play independent melodies. An expressive slow section in a free tempo provides contrast, and the work ends with a return to a faster tempo. A multitude of playing techniques, from tone bending to glissandos to tapping on the strings are used in unique ways to explore the world of sound. Sanka may emerge in response to the beauty of nature, love of humanity, and depth of art. When the experience of the sublime within oneself overflows, dreams and poems are produced.

    LATIN RHYTHMS5:00PM

ERICA TUCCERI and MATT HOYNE began playing together as students at the Victorian College of the Arts, and have been working as a flute and guitar duo ever since. Having found a beautiful meeting point between instruments and musicians, they play an array of music that acts as a working dialogue of their musical experiences.

Matt and Erica are each in their own right regular performers in Melbourne, and are garnering reputations as young up-and-coming musicians to watch. Between them, they have recorded and performed nationally and internationally, and at well-known local venues such as Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, the Melbourne Recital Centre and Federation Square.

As a duet they take pride in their genuine musical flexibility, with repertoire ranging from fiery Argentinian tunes, laid back Brazilian songs, traditional classical pieces and suites, and a range of jazz and contemporary music.
