UMPIRES CORNE R

INTERPRETATIONS OF SOMECONTENTIOUS LAWS

It should be emphasised that umpiresshould have a common sense outlookon free kicks .Holding Law -

The law dealing with holding theman - holding the ball - providesthat the player who is in possession ofthe ball, must kick or handball theball when firmly held by an opponent .

If he fails to kick or handball theball, a free kick shall be given againsthim for holding the ball .

Note: Firmly held means when theplayer is gripped firmly enough tostop or retard his progress .

Umpires must give the player who isin possession of the ball a reasonablechance to dispose of it, before free-kicking him .

(a) If a player is in the act of kick-ing or handballing and he is swung offbalance and his foot or hand does notconnect with the ball - play on .

(b) If a player is bumped and theball falls from his hands - play on .

(c) When a player has the ball heldto his body by another player - ball-up .

(d) When a player is knocked onthe arm or elbow causing him to dropthe ball - play on .

(e) When a player has his arms pin-ned to his sides, causing him to dropthe ball - play on .

(f) The spirit of the rule is to keepthe ball in motion .

Note : If a player is held by one armwhilst he retains possession of the ballwith the other - holding the ball .

The main thing to bear in mind isthis - if the player shows by hisactions that he is trying to dispose ofthe ball when he is held - let himdo it .

SOCIALWith our golf day not far off, um-

pires are getting some practice withthe little white ball . There could be a"dark horse" in the field when handi-caps are announced.

New comer Bill Paterson has wonhimself a place in the team to con-test the "Judo" championships inSydney this month .
